AU where Taako's actually a shitty cook. He can't taste his food because it everything tastes like lime gogurt

- As a kid, back when Taako was first learning magic, he did a spell that would make food taste like lime gogurt. It was a goof, and Lup egged him on, and it was hilarious in the moment. Also, when food isn’t always that tasty, having it taste like lime gogurt can be a nice reprieve. What isn’t so nice is the fact that instead of being a simple goof that would be done with in a day, at most a week, he got stuck with the citrus pudding tongue permanently. A pretty strong spell for a kid, and he would have been proud if it didn’t mean that he couldn’t really taste anything again.

- Taako and Lup became a fantastic team, with Taako boosting up the showmanship and ingredients, while Lup brought the pyrotechnics and actual taste-testing. Taako got pretty good at guesstimating how things should look or taste, and for the most part he had Lup there to say if there was not enough salt or too much garlic. They worked great together, and even though Taako couldn’t really taste anything other than lime gogurt, it was fine. They worked well together, and it wasn’t like he needed to be able to tell salt from sugar to get in the IPRE mission. Besides, he had his nose, and that was good enough for the most part.

- In Tesseralia, that dish that Taako ate was the first thing that he had actually been able to taste in years, and even though he couldn’t tell the full scope of what had just happened he knew that it was important. He was used to just getting the textures of things, or the smells, but for this he actually got those flavors, and all the subtleties and spices, and it was incredible. Even though he couldn’t get that to happen again (with all of the magic that they had learned, neither him nor Lup had figured out how to reverse the gogurt curse), it rekindled his interest in cooking. He’d actually tasted something for the first time since he was a tween elf, and he was going to try to catch that feeling again.

- After the voidfishing he got set up with Sizzle it Up, because he was a showman and deserved to be seen by the world, but anyone watching the show would know that something was missing. He would hold out a spoon to thin air, or toss an onion into the air and when it fell back into his hand look like he expected it to be diced, or leave a sentence to be finished by a nonexistent partner. You would expect it to be better when Sazed got there, but he could never find the right balance, and Sazed got squeezed back out of the spotlight after a few failed shows. 

- Sizzle it Up worked great as a cooking show because Taako knew how to work a crowd, and he knew how to make something a performance even if the actual food wasn’t perfect, and while he might have missed out on some gold because of wonky seasoning he still survived. It was rough living, but that wasn’t anything he wasn’t used to. He knew not to taste his food because he knew that nothing would come of it, and so when his audience doubled over in pain after eating his chicken there was a sickening feeling that something had gone wrong. If only he had actually tried his food, if only he actually could try his food, maybe this wouldn’t’ve happened. But what happened happened, and life went on, as life is wont to do.

- When Angus makes macarons, Taako can’t help but fuck with him. He knows that he can’t taste them, and he knows that they are probably fine, but the kid’s getting a bit big for his britches. He takes a bite – texture’s not too bad, could grind the almonds a bit more but the ganache is pretty good, tastes like key lime gogurt – and goes into a performance about how the salt and sugar must have been mistaken. When Angus asks for help cooking he’s just got to shrug, because his style of cooking isn’t exactly something that can be taught. He doesn’t know how stuff is supposed to taste, that’s a job for- (and he cuts himself off, because there’s a name at the tip of his tongue that he can’t remember).

- In the middle of the apocalypse, two food trucks in two different planes are connected, and their inhabitants make tacos. Taako’s laughing throughout the whole thing because perfect, the most important meal that he’s ever made and it’s not for a crowd, it’s not even for Lup, it’s just for him. He doesn’t sample his ingredients, not at first, because what’s the point, but then Joaquin asks him how his pico de gallo tastes. Taako’s first instinct isn’t to try it, but then something deeper than years of key lime gogurt takes over and he takes a bite. That bond forged so long ago reattaches, and he can taste all the spices, and he feels like he is buzzing the entire time that he’s cooking. He can really enjoy what he is doing without turning it into a performance, and when he takes a bite out of that fateful taco, finally tasting something other than gogurt, he’s filled with magic.

- After the fight he goes back to the same old gogurt curse, because young Taako really was a stinker, and the Taakitz household is a bit of a wreck in the food department. Kravitz didn’t really have to ever eat – and even when he did he was pretty bad at cooking – and Taako can’t taste anything other than lime gogurt. He starts using Kravitz as a taste-tester, though, and it’s domestic and sappy and unnecessary from certain perspectives, but it feels like finding a home.
