Even in an age when live-streaming content is so common and widespread, it was still somewhat mind-boggling to read of the early days of webcams, their prevalence on the internet from the 90s onwards, and some of the projects they were utilized for in Joanne McNeil's "Connected by Camera." Influenced by the nature of how many of these projects (by the likes of Jennifer Ringley, Sean Patrick Williams and Ana Voog) capture the every day life of their subject, my mind was drawn to the Jim Carrey classic film, “The Truman Show.”

Of course, the difference here is willingness to be and knowledge of being recorded. Ringley, Williams and Voog all knowingly set up their webcams to “lifecast,” while Carrey’s character in the film is (spoiler alert) unaware that his entire life is set up and being recorded.

That key differentiating point is where the likes of Google Glass and Project Aria come in to the conversation. With these types of devices, as is raised in Mark Hurst’s cautionary article, people who are not users but merely on the other side of the lens oftentimes may not even know if or when they are being recorded (as was the case The Truman Show’s protagonist, before he [spoiler #2] figured it out). As discussed by Hurst, this raises all kinds of ethical dilemmas about the use and potential use of these technologies, and how they could present (among other issues) invasion of privacy, which I think are certainly valid concerns! Similar to current conversations and debates around the growing use of AI in society, this all raises the question of “we CAN do it, and it’s pretty cool, but SHOULD we?”

BOOK 23: Wrong Way by Joanne McNeil

Nothing jobs. New England suburbia. A new driverless car company that has more to it than meets the eye. I wolfed this book down and was left unsettled and distraught. McNeil does an amazing job of writing a book in which not much happens but yet there’s so much going on and so many questions you’re haunted by when the book ends. Who are we, the workers, when technological firms sweep us up in the pursuit of progress, just another cog in the machine? I still don’t think I’m any closer to understanding the ending, but I think that’s the point. Definitely a book I’d recommend, but probably you should wait to read it once you’re firmly outside of the clutches of your family’s home or else risk resonating too much with the stasis the author conjures.

In some ways the book I expected McNeil to write and also something different and better. Free-flowing, moving, and dark, this captures something tangible both about our present moment and also something very specific about Massachusetts.

Is this the world's first AI-generated documentary?

Alan Warburton was commissioned by the ODI's Data as Culture programme to bring us 'The Wizard of AI,' a 20-minute video essay about the cultural impacts of generative AI. It was produced over three weeks at the end of October 2023, one year after the release of the infamous Midjourney v4, which the artist treats as "gamechanger" for visual cultures and creative economies. According to the artist, the video itself is "99% AI" and was produced using generative AI tools like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Runway and Pika. Yet the artist is careful to temper the hype of these new tools, or as he says, to give in to the "wonder-panic" brought about by generative AI. Using creative workflows unthinkable before October 2023, he takes us on a colourful journey behind the curtain of AI - through Oz, pink slime, Kanye's 'Futch' and a deep sea dredge - to explain and critique the legal, aesthetic and ethical problems engendered by AI-automated platforms. Most importantly, he focusses on the real impacts this disruptive wave of technology continues to have on artists and designers around the world.

It can feel like an exercise in futility: If this work was really worth it—if someone other than you believed in its value—wouldn’t you have the time and money and institutional support to do it right? A library would offer to acquire your letters, no? Or, perhaps, with awards, grant money or even profits, you could hire a professional? Beyoncé, for instance, has employed digital archivists since 2011. A GQ profile of the artist in 2013 revealed that inside her office there’s a “temperature-controlled digital-storage facility that contains virtually every existing photograph of her, starting with the very first frames taken of Destiny’s Child, the ’90s girl group she once fronted; every interview she’s ever done; every video of every show she’s ever performed; every diary entry she’s ever recorded while looking into the unblinking eye of her laptop.”
