✨ Astrology books I use ✨

⭐️ The Compleat Astrologer, by Derek Parker & Julia Parker, was the first astrology book I read when I was a kid, though I didn't understand a single shit (obvsly). I thought the illustrations were beautiful (and they are!!) and was obsessed with them. With this book, when I grew up, I learned how to properly calculate a birth chart.

⭐️ Dictionnaire Pratique d'Astrologie, by Catherine Aubier, is the book I carry literally everywhere, EVERYWHERE, everywhere, EVERYWHERE! I'm always reading it and meditating about it. It is probably my favorite book, because it's the one that is part of my daily life, really.

PS: There’s also another book by  Marion D. March & Joan McEvers that I use but I can’t find it’s original title anywhere!!! Anyway, in Portuguese it was published as ‘Seu Horóscopo, Seu Destino’ (literally ‘Your Horoscope, Your Destiny’), just in case anyone wants to know.

Hello! I hope you had a lovely holiday, if you celebrate one. Do you have any recommendations for books on astrology? I searched your blog but didn’t find anything so apologies if you’ve answered questions like this before. Thank you for your time!

I deal in Tropical Astrology which is the most popular form in the West and I use the Whole house system. If you know nothing about astrology these things will make no sense to you until you start reading the books. Astrology is really one of those things you need to do to understand. Reading books is okay, but you need to be making birth charts and analysing them alongside the reading- the key to astrology is in the interpretation.

The best beginners practical book in my opinion is "The Only Way to Learn Astrology Volume 1" by Marion D. March and Joan McEvers. This will get you making your natal chart step by step and showing you how to interpret and it is beginner friendly.

One of the classic 'bibles' of Astrology is "Parkers' Astrology" by Julia Parker and Derek Parker its a big book filled with a lot of info and one of the best introductions to Tropical astrology and a justification for still using it. It's been re-released lots of times, I got my copy in a charity shop for about £3.00. Whilst the book has been re-released the bulk of astrology has not changed! Don't be afraid of getting an earlier edition!

I also like "General Principles of Astrology" by Aleister Crowley (ghostwriting as Evangeline Adams). This book is a little harder to find and a little on the expensive side now. If you have the other two I wouldn't bother getting this one if you can't afford it. But I think Crowley was a good astrologer and also very good at judging characters and analysing people all this plays in to his Astrological knowledge and if I remember correctly there are many birth charts in the appendix of famous figures from history.

These will be enough to get you started, there are others, but these are the ones I think helped me the most. Particularly the first one. I haven't looked at any of the following volumes of The only way to learn astrology, but if they are as good as the first they are probably worth having too.

MERCURY STATIONS RETROGRADE IN SCORPIO

Mercury will station retrograde on the 13thOctober at 11°40’ Scorpio (antiscion 18°20’ Aquarius).The retrograde period will end on the 3rdNovember at 25°53’ Libra (antiscion 4°07’ Pisces)

Mercury is in opposition to retrograde Uranus in Taurus so we could expect some upsets as these two fixed signs are occupied by two of the most unpredictable and excitable planets. There will be three passes of this aspect, all at 9° Scorpio-Taurus so anyone with planets or angles between 7-12° of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) will be involved in this aspect.

What might we expect? Freedom of thought that may however not be expressed as freely as one might wish causing brooding and pent up energy which could be released in the most unpredictable ways, secrets coming out? Mercury is not only thought, it’s also movement so be careful, you may not be as flexible or sinuous as you think!Gemini and Virgo, both ruled by Mercury, may respond differently to the signs their ruling planet moves through on its journey backwards. Virgo, being an Earth sign, can easily contain Water signs (Scorpio) and they add empathy to this practical, somewhat seemingly inhibited sign, the Air signs (Libra) come across as too scattered and fairness isn’t a good match for Virgo criticism. Gemini, an Air sign, finds the Water signs rather draining, too emotionally intense for their logical, future-oriented way of thinking whilst the Air signs (Libra) are easy to get along with. Of course, the retrograde movement alters the way Mercury is expressed and makes it more an internal, inward journey rather than an expansive outward thrust.As always, the usual suggestions apply to the Mercury retrograde: great for putting “re” in front of everything, planning, but waiting for the direct station, before acting.

Expecting possible delays in transport of all kinds, upheavals in the planning of appointments, electronic equipment going haywire etc. Avoiding signing contracts (where possible, but again contracts are between people so it’s a retrograde season for everyone and if its “bad” for one it may be “good” for the other party).

The Sabian symbol for 12° Scorpio: “An official embassy ball.” Indicating group-consciousness as it flowers at the highest level in cultural interchanges between representatives of the elite of the ruling class.The antiscion at 19° Aquarius: “A forest fire is being subdued by the use of water, chemicals and sheer muscular energy.” Indicating the skill and courage necessary to bring under control the destructive potential of carelessness of karmic visitations.

Hello mrs m! I wanted to ask you, what does it mean to have a planet in detriment and how can I spot it in my chart? Thank you 🙏

Having a planet in detriment is having a planet in a sign which is opposite the sign it rules. Here’s a list of detriments:

Sun - AquariusMoon - CapricornMercury - Sagittarius and PiscesVenus - Aries and ScorpioMars - Taurus and LibraLady Asteroids (if you’re me) - PiscesJupiter - Gemini and VirgoSaturn - Cancer and LeoCentaurs (e.g. Chiron) (if you’re me) - AriesUranus - LeoNeptune - VirgoPluto (and the other TNOs, if you’re me) - Taurus

IIRC, Marion March and Joan McEvers likened a planet in detriment to “the planet is staying in somebody else’s home and has to follow their rules.” The Sun can’t really shine in Aquarius, which insists that everybody has an equal right to shine; Mars in Taurus or Libra finds it impossible to have any “get up and go” to work with.

On the other hand, there are lessons to be learned, right? The Sun needs to learn that it isn’t more important than anybody else; Mars needs to learn a little tact and perseverance. Thanks for the ask! XOXOXO
