Saw a hot take yesterday that said people needed to 'get over' their Inquisitors and that no one wanted to play them anymore or hear about them and here's me caring about my Inquisitor SO MUCH this is his 4th playthrough.
Show me your Inquisitors! Tell me about them!

Just thinking about the scene with Solas and Lavellan where she tells him he doesn’t have to go alone, and he replies where he is going is terrible.
Yes, it’s a warning. But it is also disbelief she could want to follow him somewhere terrible. That she would still want to be with him, despite where he must go. Why would she choose freely to go somewhere terrible? For him? The concept is foreign to him.
The last time he loved someone, Mythal, he asked her to leave everything she knew behind to join him, and she refused. He did that very thing for her, but she would not do the same for him. He made her a place for her to be comfortable, and she never saw it.
Solas has nothing to offer Lavellan. No castle to gift her, no place for her to be comfortable. He is at his lowest. He is going somewhere terrible. He only has empty, bloody hands to give.
I’m reminded of that scene from Little Women (1994) when Professor Bhaer tells Jo, “But I have nothing to give you. My hands are empty.” Jo takes his hands in hers and says, “Not empty now.”
Lavellan does much the same. She reaches for his hands, bloody as they are. She tells him it won’t be terrible if he is with her. They make this journey together, always. She doesn’t need anything else. He is enough. Their love is enough. There is no fate but the love they share.
Why would she choose freely to go somewhere terrible? Because she loves him. It’s True Love. The kind that only can exist in stories. Good thing we’re in one.

I was spending my Friday evening ruminating over the beauty that is the Solavellan reunion and there was this one song that kept playing in my head as I read through the tens of hundreds of tweets/tumblr posts on those two beautiful souls!
And I wanted to share that with the world.
This might interest the one other Indian Solavellan fan out there but, I think it is the perfect song that would depict what Solas must have felt when Lavellan chooses to go with him. This is how I imagine he feels about her in general, but this fits the ending even more!
I also think it is a beautiful thing that we can have songs in other (more obscure) languages describe this pairing. I guess it goes out to show just how universal feelings and emotions are!
Here's the song I was thinking about.
youtube
The Lyrics and their meaning under the cut
(Meaning in Purple)
Koi nahi mera jarurat teri You have no need of me but, Lage na jiya dekhu na jo surat teri My life loses its purpose when I don't see your face Tu hai toh dil dhadakta hai With you by my side, My heart can beat Tu hai toh saans aati hai With you by my side, I can breathe Tu na toh ghar ghar nahi lagta Without you, I feel nowhere at home Tu hai toh dar nahi lagta With you by my side, I have no fear. Tu hai toh gham na aate hai With you by my side, you drive away my sadness Tu hai toh muskurate hai With you by my side, I can smile from the heart Ke tere bin so nahi sakte Without you, I cannot sleep in peace Kisi ke ho nahi sakte I cannot be whole...
That's just the first few lines... the song goes on about how he sees his future in her... how she completes him... how even death would have to wait until they can go into its embrace together... I'm a puddle of emotions, y'all!
Also, I think I'll do more of these song recommendations for the pairing with the exact scenario I have in mind... In proper Indian movie fashion! Also, if you're someone who is interested in Indian culture and Dragon Age, please hit me up! It would be nice to know I'm not the only one out there!

ALSO additional thoughts about my extensive personal canon based on revelations that come up when you examine the murals in the Lighthouse (if you've not had a quest to view the murals/memories and don't want spoilers don't look)
So ancient elves having been spirits who chose to became physical isn't that huge of a stretch, it's been bandied about in fandom for years now, specifically there's been all those theories about Solas having been a wisdom spirit
And it's just got me thinking about how he views the Thedas in my canon, where he meets a Spirit of Justice who chose to become mortal after initially merging with a human mage, because the spirit fell in love with a mortal woman (Elissa Cousland and Justice)
And where there's a mortal organisation that appears to have been founded on the scraps and remnants of his rebellion, and have been unknowingly working hard for centuries to maintain the prison in his absence even if they didn't necessarily know that's what they were doing (Jo Hawke and the Veiled Brotherhood)
And where the mortal human woman who interrupted his ritual the first time around is, on close inspection when he offers to heal her at the onset of Inquisition, not a mortal woman at all but another spirit BUT she doesn't KNOW she's a spirit
And he has to wonder just how much spirits - who are supposed to be static and unchanging lest they turn into demons - might actually be capable of evolution and that perhaps things are not as black and white as they were in his time, when he regrets becoming whole and he regrets the horror of physical form and yet here there are spirits who have nothing but abundant joy in their mortal selves, and who resolutely embrace the pain and frustrations of mortality because it means they get to experience life
When he met Therese Lavellan who joined the Inquisition under Corinne and bluntly told him "just because they share a name does not mean the people you speak of are my gods" and he thought she was just in denial about the truth and didn't stop to consider that stories evolve, faith evolves, and the facts of what happened ten thousand years ago do not necessarily make a difference to faith in the present
Wisdom can be stubborn. It can be resistant. It can lead to pride, if the desire to dig in and remain adamant overrules common sense
Maybe he needed time to absorb the fact that Thedas had changed. That people had changed. Spirits had changed. Faith had changed
Maybe he needed time to consider whether he too is capable of change

Anyone else's actual characters in game NOTHING like the character you've created in your head or is that just me?
Like in DAI, its like this for all my characters. For example, my in game Lavellan is ur average elven jo schmo but my ACTUAL Lavellan is a half-human elf, in his fifties, has full grown children, a wife, and is banned in multiple regions in Thedas due to his past atrocities
I could start a whole book trilogy on my single-mom Adaar who's ex husband is an actual power hungry degenerate, and a teenage son who wants to kill him (their beef goes harder than Kendrick and Drakes)
Edit: I've changed my Adaar's ex-husband A LOT so now there's a tragic romance arc where he gets sick and starts to change and become a good man, they fall in love again, and he builds a relationship with their son only to die in the end bc I just love tragedy

fantasy or sci-fi? I was once a fantasy head but I read near exclusively hard sci-fi for like a year now so who even knows tbh
do you have three or four favourite quotes, if so what are they? “Can a magician kill a man by magic?” Lord Wellington asked Strange./Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. “I suppose a magician might,” he admitted, “but a gentleman never could.” Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell “This is life, and I will not lie by saying every day will be sunshine. But there will be sunshine again, and that is a very different thing to say. That is truth.” Rhyth of War “Every concert pianist knows that the surest way to ruin a performance is to be aware of what the fingers are doing. Every dancer and acrobat knows enough to let the mind go, let the body run itself. Every driver of a manual vehicle arrives at destinations with no recollection of the stops and turns and roads traveled in getting there. You are all sleepwalkers, whether climbing creative peaks or slogging through some mundane routine for the thousandth time. You are all sleepwalkers.” Blindsight (READ BLINDSIGHT) I guess. what are some of your favorite song lyrics? "Lately I've taken to vacantly making repetitive movements/Mistakenly seen as improvements/Nearing perfection but wisely electing/To shun my reflection preferring instead shoe inspection/Cheese and chalk do not talk/But their eyes synchronize with a secret rhythm/Which is a way one could say that I love you for psychological reasons"

by feathermage
An ex-slave who hates mages and a mage who despises him for it—it was a much easier tale to spin for a Seeker of Truth. The reality was more complicated. There was fear and mistrust, bitterness and anger. But there was also gradual acceptance, tentative friendship, and hard-won love that took seven years to flourish.
Anders said a lot of things about love over those years—promises to drown the city in blood to keep the one he loved safe, rules he would cherish breaking, and his one bright light in Kirkwall.
Except that he didn't say any of this to Hawke. He said it to Fenris.

Happy friday! For some Hawke/Lavellan this week, “It’s… different. With them, I spent most of my time longing for something that wasn’t even accessible. With you, I simply feel alive.” (from the Moth to the Flame prompts)
Ty for the prompt!! I got so many amazing ones last week I'm going to work through! Some incredibly indulgent Hawkevellan this evening for @dadrunkwriting !
for folks who are reading my fic Vertigo, this is Vertigo Hawke!
Tumblr media
Herald’s Rest had been Hawke’s choice tonight, and the longer the evening went on, the better an idea it had become.
No one had expected the cloaked, hooded elf that had appeared at dusk the evening before, greatsword strapped to his back, bearing a message for no one but Hawke and the Inquisitor. Anders was at Vigil’s Keep, had information about the possibility of a cure for the Warden taint, and needed two things. A blood mage, and someone with enough power to protect him.
Fenris was infamous, his attempts at a clandestine meeting lasting only as long as it took Josephine to start planning a formal dinner. Hawke was the sort of man who made deals in dark alleys, but the Inquisitor negotiated everything over three courses and free-flowing wine.
Fenris had seen enough of court functions and catered meals with aristocrats for a lifetime. Hawke missed the Hanged Man.
The evening could have been worse. There was plenty of alcohol of all kinds flowing freely, stories about Kirkwall, and a delightful—if heated—debate between Iron Bull and Fenris that had finally carried out of the tavern and into the courtyard. If Jos hadn’t been glaring at the door they’d just left through like he wanted to set it on fire, Hawke might have followed them.
Instead, he leaned casually against Jos, all but flattening him into the corner of the booth, finally earning his attention with a disgruntled huff.
“You know,” Hawke said, picking up his tankard of ale and taking a drink. “It’s peak irony that the most unhappy person in this bar is the one it’s named after.”
He felt Jos’s eyes on him. “What makes you think I’m unhappy?” he snapped.
Hawke chuckled. “You spent half the night looking at Fenris like you want to drink his blood with your morning meal.”
“Mmm,” Jos hummed, affecting a sharp smile and sipping his red wine. “Lovely image.”
Hawke shifted, draping his arm around Jos’s shoulders. The Inquisitor was far slighter than him, but not shaped so differently from Fenris. He had the same dusky bronze skin, dark brows, vivid green eyes, tattoos.
“You do realize that we appear related,” Jos said darkly, essentially reading Hawke’s mind.
“Because you’re both elves?” Hawke pretended to have never considered it, taking a drink of his beer to keep the smile off his lips.
“So amusing,” Jos sniped, squeezing his leg under the table and curling his fingernails in. “Tell me—am I a fitting replacement?”
Outside, snow had started to fall, the windows frosted, and he could no longer see Fenris and Bull. “The two of you are nothing alike,” he told Jos.
“You described him to me not long after we met,” Jos recalled, setting his wine on the table and dragging a fingertip around the rim slowly like a cat deciding whether to shove it off the edge. “Brilliant. Witty. Resourceful. Deadly. Beautiful. I am not these things?”
Hawke opened his mouth to reply, and then shut it. He drank some more beer.
Jos allowed the silence, but Hawke could feel him simmering. Someone entered the tavern, letting in a gust of wet, cold air that felt good on his face.
“It’s…different,” Hawke said after a moment. “With him…I spent most of my time longing for something that wasn’t even accessible. It never was.”
“What do they call this in Orlais…” Jos mused, picking up his wine glass again. “A prix de consolation.”
Hawke laughed. “You are not a consolation prize, you big baby.”
“I can show you how deadly I can be if you like.”
“I’m aware. Yes. I have a thing for mean magic elves. But I only want one.”
Jos sipped his wine. “If you loved him, why did you not fight for him?”
Hawke sighed, turning to glance at the bar and catch the eye of the tavernkeeper. He got a nod in return and saw the man start to fill another tankard. When he glanced at Jos again, he found the Inquisitor watching him and tried not to think about how similar to Fenris he looked with that line between his black eyebrows.
“There was no part of who I am that he wanted,” he finally told Jos, fidgeting with a napkin on the table. “Not the mage, and especially not the magic I practice. Not the aristocrat. Not the man.”
Again, there was silence, and Hawke could sense Jos biting his tongue. The answer wasn’t enough, so Hawke went on.
“With him, I felt inadequate. Incomplete. Flawed. With you…I simply feel alive.”
Another moment passed and then Jos made a small sound—a low hum that Hawke had learned meant approval. Gradually, by the time Hawke’s new beer had arrived, Jos relaxed against him, the hand on Hawke’s thigh sliding just a bit higher.

OKAY: every even number from that dragon age protagonist questionnaire
~laughs~ Buckle in, this is going to be long! Thank you, my lovely! That said, 6 & 12 have already been answered here, so it won’t be as long.
2. What would your Hawke generally think of your warden and your Inquisitor?
Jo is in awe of Dermot Cousland. He’s the hero of her homeland, and she even met him briefly at Ostagar. The ideal of him is what she aspires to, without knowing any of the squishy, uncomfortable bits. She’s not wholly sure what to make of Eralen - the Dalish mage does her job, and does it well, but Jo is a little judgy when it comes to the distance she thinks Eralen keeps between herself and her companions.
4. What would they think about each other’s love interests (if they romanced someone of course)
Dermot would, I think, understand Jo and Varric’s relationship better than she does, and, well, Eralen’s in love with his little brother, so that’s all well and good. Jo’s met Zevran - she thinks he’s a harmless flirt; Bryland, on the other hand, strikes her as being a little too gung-ho to be a good match for Eralen. And Eralen loves Zevran almost as much as she loves Dermot, both of them treating her like a little sister, though Zevran definitely prefers to tease her; Varric, she considers one of her closest friends, even if Jo can’t quite see it.
8. What would your inquisitor and warden think of what happened in Kirkwall? Would they have supported Hawke’s decisions?
Wow, that one is complicated for Dermot. He was the one who conscripted Anders, and he made friends with Justice as well. In Jo’s place, he would have worked harder to understand and mitigate his friends’ feelings on the matter, and if necessary, remove Anders/Justice from the city entirely for their own safety. As it stands, he knows Jo did everything she felt was right, and in the end, that is all anyone can do. Eralen falls naturally into a position of support for Jo’s decision to defend the mages, being a mage herself and having a natural terror of Templars; she would definitely have supported Jo, had she been there.
10. Do your protagonists share the same opinions on the Chantry?
Dermot still respects the Chantry, for all its faults and flaws. His faith is a huge part of him, and he finds it difficult to separate his faith from the institution that guided him throughout his childhood and youth. He doesn’t always approve of the higher ups in the Chantry, but he does have a great deal of respect for the priests lower down who minister to their parishes as best they can. Jo despises the Chantry with a passion, because it’s the Chantry’s teachings that have had her on the run for most of her life, first to protect her father and sister, and then to prevent an entire city being made to suffer for her actions. As for Eralen, she’s indifferent. She views the Chantry as a bogeyman that is losing power and respect, a monster under the bed from her childhood, and a looming presence that makes her life a delicate balance between doing what needs to be done and keeping herself safe. She honestly doesn’t care what happens to the Chantry, so long as it doesn’t hurt the people who rely on it.
14. If they’d been in each other’s places would they have made the same or different choices? And who would they have romanced, if anyone?
I think they would have made the same choices as each other, for all that they approach decision making in their own unique ways. Romances, now, that would be an interesting exercise. ~grins~ Let’s see ... Dermot would probably have romanced Merrill, despite his opinions on blood magic, and it’s a toss up between Dorian and Cassandra for him in Inquisition. It would all depend on how big an impression those first meetings made on him. Jo would have tripped and fallen into a romance with Leliana trying not to upset the boys in Origins, and even though he isn’t romanceable again, she would have romanced Varric in Inquisition. Eralen ... Hmmm. I don’t think she would have romanced anyone in Origins, but Fenris would have to work very hard not to be wooed by her in 2.
16. Would your protagonists have the same Hogwarts house?
I had to take a test for this! And the results are kind of fascinating - Dermot came out Hufflepuff, which wasn’t a surprise; Jo is a Gryffindor; and Eralen, to my amazement, revealed herself to be a closet Slytherin!
18. What is the biggest similarity between your protagonists?
Their sense of morality - what is right and what is wrong, and how authority doesn’t always understand the difference between illegal and immoral. They’re very similar in that regard.
20. Who handles responsibility the best? And who handles it the worst?
This should come as a surprise to no one, but Dermot is definitely the best at handling responsibility. He steps up and takes responsibility without being prompted to. And of course Jo is the worst. She’s a Hawke. It’s a wonder she remembers to put her knickers on in the morning without help.
22. Would you ever ship any of them together?
No, I don’t think I would. I mean, I could, but it would feel forced.
24. How do each of your protagonists handle loss?
Dermot tends to absorb it and keep it in his heart, as his motivation to keep going when he has nothing else left. Jo goes numb and then never speaks of the people she’s lost ever again. Eralen reacts with anger, even if it was an expected death. She considers death her enemy.
26. Do any of your protagonists marry and/or have children?
Dermot never gets married to Zevran, but he does have a son with Morrigan, Kieran, who is in the unique position of having one mother and two fathers, because both Dermot and Zevran make a point of being involved in the boy’s upbringing. Jo does eventually marry Varric (if she lives), but they never conceive a child. Instead, they adopt a fair number of orphans in Kirkwall. Eralen does marry Bryland Cousland, and they do have children together. The number and identities of those children have yet to be decided.
28. What is their favorite location within their own game and what would be their favorite in each others?
You know, Dermot really liked the Temple of Ashes. I think, in 2, he would have liked Sundermount, and he would have loved the Storm Coast in Inquisition. Jo’s a townie, so her faves would be Denerim, Lowtown, and Val Royeaux. Eralen would, strangely enough, have loved the Mage Tower in Origins, and probably Hightown in 2. Her heart rests with the Emerald Graves, though.
30. Out of your Warden, Hawke, and Inquisitor, who is your favorite?
Oooh, that’s such a hard question! ~laughs~ I love them all, but I know Dermot best. So, for now, Dermot is my favorite.
