Käärijä songs personified (pt.2)
Some more Kä songs with made up character traits :3 Maybe I should do the same for JO songs these are fun
Huhhahhei: -a hopeless romantic, pulls out roses from thin air -he always wears the leather coat and a Captain's hat -self proclaimed captain of his love boat (no one knows what boat he is referring to) -his date ideas include fishing, going to amusement parks and having sex -looks intimidating but he's actually very sweet and always in a good mood
Kiertävä Sirkus: -uses self deprecating humor to cope -will not flex about his money because he's broke as hell -there's a lot going on inside but he struggles to put his feelings into words so he'll resort to making monkey noises if he's feeling flustered -has very colorful makeup and clothes on, he'll always stand out -has a love/hate relationship with performing but you can rip that microphone from his cold dead hands
Paidaton Riehuja: -very body positive, he encourages anyone to take off their shirts like the shirtless guru he is -often seen walking around with a yellow plastic guitar, a weapon or an instrument? No one knows -I actually rlly like the idea of Paidaton!Käärijä specifically being trans, so he's transmasc with top surgery scars :3 -has tried taking up going to the gym several times but always ends up giving up -a bit of a himbo but he's got the spirit
Fantastista: -he looks like the Fantastista album cover (yes, he's literally black&white) -he's the youngest of the Kä's, even younger than Mic Mac Käärijä -very stubborn and determined to get his way, ends most demands with "It's a threat👺" -as bratty as he is, he's also quite thoughtful and always makes sure to keep things quiet for the neighbors past 22:00 -quite reckless, constantly has to be dragged out of mosh pits and fights
Menestynyt yksilö: -very bitter about the past, he gets caught up on all the time he's lost -he may be a bit depressing but conversations with him are real as fuck and he gives excellent life advice -has a big soft spot for dogs and would like to get one some day -very pessimistic about the future, especially once he's had a few drinks in him -honestly just needs a hug
Auto Jää: -absolutely insufferable, do not pair him with Urheilujätkä!Käärijä or you have two over energetic men that will cause chaos -always wears the black/pink ski jacket -he's quite childish but also very responsible, will fuck you up if you even consider drunk driving -give this man a bottle of champagne and everything will be flooded within seconds -just happy to be here
Viulunkieli: -one of the few Kä's that isn't completely broke, gets a reasonable paycheck -he's quite sensitive to people's moods and gets nervous when he picks up on tension -very close with Välikuolema!Käärijä, they get along well -his plans to have a fun night out usually don't go so well 😅 -keeps talking about this mysterious figure called Kari, no one has seen the man before
Rock Rock: -very self confident, is always talking abt how much he loves his mom -has some kind of fascination with construction cranes -very bouncy and is often hopping all over the place -he exagarates his own success but, well, as long as he's happy.... -prone to babbling and talking really fast
Online: -is very openly anti social media -however the reason he's so vocal about not being in online spaces is because he can get addicted very easily so he tries to keep himself from falling back into internet addiction by talking smack about it -communicates mostly through written letters and maybe if you're lucky you can have the number to his landline phone -is the least pale of the Käärijä's, actually goes on proper vacations -he uses a Polaroid camera if he wants to take pictures somewhere
Nou Roblem: -bro has sunglasses on at all times to disguise the European gay porn sadness in his eyes -"I don't have a problem haha" (guy who has a lot of problems) -rides a moped around -is often hungry, pls feed the man -consequences always come back to bite him in the ass no matter how much he tries to play it cool

MARCH 2020 BC ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULES & REVIEW
Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of April 7 KST:
A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly limit).
A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on the monthly schedule.
Threads and solos do not have to take place directly during an important date listed on the schedule, but must be related to what the muse is mentioned to be doing in the paragraph explaining their schedule/the company’s schedule for the month and/or their thoughts on the mentioned activities or lack thereof.
These schedules may be updated throughout the month if new information needs to be added.
Reminder: February schedule posts are due by the end of March 7 KST.
Overall Company
Word is passed down by management that Kim Byungchul has expressed his personal thanks for all of BC’s idols for performing at his wedding. The couple are on an extended honeymoon overseas, so they won’t be seen much these days, but that doesn’t mean anyone else at the company gets a break this month. As the end of the first quarter, the company is set on starting the year strong and believe there’s no better time than now to do so.
Important dates:
N/A
BC Soloist 1
“Roller Coaster” has only risen up the charts, so BC is eager to go forward with their plans for a summer comeback. She won’t get any real rest time before beginning comeback preparations for her next album, but she’ll will be filming a reality show about her “free month”. It’s her first reality show since debut. The first episode will film her going about her daily routine at home. If she’d like a (female) industry friend to make an appearance visiting her home during the first episode, she will be encouraged to do so. For the show, throughout the month, she’s also go kart racing, go to an arcade, visit Tokyo, Japan [2] [3], and get her fortune read.
Important dates:
March 20-22: Trip to Tokyo, Japan.
March 30: Performance at Seoul Spring Festival Day Concert (see event).
Decipher
They’ve been informed they’ll begin preparing for their next Korean comeback next month, but for now, their schedules are more on the calm side. They’ve landed a new brand deal with casual clothing brand TBJ for their S/S collection this year, so they have a CF to shoot for that with a fun and laidback concept and a fan sign with the brand at the end of the month. Their Japanese single album releases mid-month to much positive reception in Japan and they’re able to top both the daily and weekly Japanese single album charts with it.
Important dates:
March 11: TBJ S/S 2020 CF shoot.
March 18: Release of “L.U.V” and L.U.V Japanese single album.
March 27: TBJ fan sign in Gangnam, Seoul.
              ↳ Decipher R & V
No schedules for the month.
Important dates:
N/A.
              ↳ CHAMPION
Throughout the beginning of the month, the members will continue to meet up at the BC Entertainment building to rehearse choreography so that by the 20th, they’re prepared to leave on a short trip to Dubai to film parts of the music video for their sub-unit debut title track. In the days following their return, they’ll be busy with more promotional content filming. Fans are sure to notice that the same group of idols that was seen at the BC building is now taking the same flight out of the airport, but BC and Dimensions continue to not confirm anything to keep fans talking.
Important dates:
March 20-22: Trip to Dubai for “Jopping” MV filming.
March 23: CHAMPION focus trailer video filming.
March 24: CHAMPION group trailer video filming.
March 25: Additional “Jopping” MV filming.
March 26: Album photoshoot.
BEE
It’s comeback time and as has been the case since they renewed their contracts, this comeback is a successful one, especially in the digitals departments. They might not need the promotion, but BC will be sending them out on both Knowing Bros and Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook during their promotions to connect with the general public more, since they’ve always been their biggest audience.
Important dates:
March 10: Release of “I Like That” & Insane Love showcase, promotions continue until April 10.
March 11: Filming of Knowing Bros episode (to be aired March 21).
March 13: Filming of Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook episode (performing: I Like That, Touch My Body, and Say I Love You, to be aired March 20).
March 30: Performance at Seoul Spring Festival Day Concert (see event).
              ↳ 2BEE
As the group is promoting this month, the two unit members will not have much work for debut prep. Instead, they’ll be asked to continue perfecting the performance of the choreography they learned last month in order to be ready for the music video filming next month.
Important dates:
N/A
Knight
It’s been a while since Knight held any concerts in the US, but this month they have three stops in the country as well as a concert in Indonesia shortly following. BC has opted not to have Knight do the normal round of English press idols tend to do while in the States as they’d prefer to pull out their connections for CHAMPION since the sub-unit will be much more targeted toward the market than Knight has been. The members will leave Korea on the 4th to stay in Chicago on the 5th and 6th, Newark on the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th, and Los Angeles on the 11th, 12th, and 13th before leaving to Jakarta on the morning of the 14th. While in Los Angeles, they’ll do a shoot with 1st Look magazine.
Important dates:
March 6: UNLIMITED tour concert at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, IL, USA.
March 8: UNLIMITED tour concert at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, USA.
March 12: Photo shoot for 1st Look’s May issue in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
March 13: UNLIMITED tour concert at The Forum in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
March 15: UNLIMITED tour concert at Indonesia Convention Exhibition in Jakarta, Indonesia.
              ↳ White Knight
No schedules for the month.
Important dates:
N/A
March 23: CHAMPION focus trailer video [2] filming.
March 24: CHAMPION group trailer video filming.
March 25: Additional “Jopping” MV filming.
March 26: Album photoshoot [2]
Lipstick
Their Japanese studio album releases this month and although it underperforms by BC’s expectations by only selling a few thousand albums in Japan in the first week, they have a Japanese tour to gear up for to accompany it. Now that they know all the choreography for the tour, they’ll be expected to continue to practice the choreography, though official tour rehearsals have not started yet. They’ll also have fittings for the tour, but it’s a fairly relaxed month and BC has granted them a one-week vacation from March 6 to 12, unless the member has individual schedules during that time.
Important dates:
March 6-12: Vacation.
March 18: Release of Dress To Kill Japanese album.
March 20: Japanese tour fittings.
              ↳ Lip Gloss
Lip Gloss will also be performing their unit songs as a part of Lipstick’s Japanese tour due to the popularity of their earlier songs with the Japanese audience, so they’ll have additional fittings on the tour fitting day and will be expected to refresh themselves on the choreography of “My Copycat” and “Catallena”.
Important dates:
N/A
CHARM
After the end of their music show promotions on the third, there’s only a short time before they take off to Japan, and that time will be filled with rehearsals aimed at perfecting their performances again as they return to touring. Before leaving, they’ll also be in the studio to record the main OST for the second season of A-TEEN. Their unit OST for the first season earned them a Best OST award at MAMA last year, so BC was happy to have them reprise their role as OST singers, this time as a full group, for the second season.
Important dates:
March 3: End of music show promotions.
March 10: Ode To You tour concert at Osaka-Jo Hall in Osaka, Japan.
March 11: Ode To You tour concert at Osaka-Jo Hall in Osaka, Japan.
March 15: Ode To You tour concert at Aichi Sky Expo Hall A in Aichi, Japan.
March 16: Ode To You tour concert at Aichi Sky Expo Hall A in Aichi, Japan.
March 30: Performance at Seoul Spring Festival Day Concert (see event).
              ↳ CHARM U
They continue to perform the song during their Japanese tour to hype the release, but now that their debut is next month, they’ll need to shoot the teaser photos and digital album cover. The news of the unit officially debuting will be announced mid-month, after which the members are allowed to publicly acknowledge that they’ll be releasing and promoting the song.
Important dates:
March 5: Teaser photo shoot.
WISH
To prepare for their comeback at the very end of the month, the members will have photo shoots for the album photo book [2] as well as the promotional teasers before their music video filming mid-month. Their Korean comeback isn’t the only thing they’re working on though, as they need to continue preparing for their next Japanese comeback as well with fittings and learning the title song’s choreography.
Important dates:
March 1: “Feel Special” MV and stage outfit &  “Fake & True” MV outfit fittings.
March 3: Feel Special photo book [2] shoot.
March 13: Teaser photo shoot.
March 15: “Feel Special” MV filming.
March 30: Performance at Seoul Spring Festival Day Concert (see event).
March 30: Release of “Feel Special” & Feel Special showcase, promotions continue until April 30.
March 30: MV Copy and Talking Relay video filming.

round up // FEBRUARY 20
Tumblr media
On Wednesdays we wear pink, and in February, I stay inside and watch Turner Classic Movies because it’s too gosh-darn cold to do anything else. I watched almost as many movies as days in this month, largely thanks to TCM’s 31 Days of Oscar. A few things I learned:
As much as I enjoy a good TV binge, I enjoy the satisfaction of a movie's end more.
Thank goodness TCM shows good movies when the theatres seem barren of them.
If anyone says women’s complaints about their depiction in Hollywood are overblown, I’d challenge them to watch my month’s lineup. Most female characters were basically non-existent or defined as objects of desire no matter what decade the movies were from.
In February, I also watch the Academy Awards. Most of the movies here were nominated for Oscars, but I’m also recommending a few more pop culture picks (including TV, social media, a book, articles, and music) for the month.
February Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
The Imagineering Story (2019)
The Imagineering Story tells the story behind the creation of Disney theme parks, with the greatest highlight of showing you how attractions are designed. Is this shameless Disney marketing on the Disney+ streaming service? Yep, but it’s so well done that for a moment I forgot about their unsettling takeover of the entertainment industry and wanted to quit everything I was doing to go work for them.
Tumblr media
This Knives Out Sequel Twitter Thread
The Internet can be a scary place, but this thread reminds us the fun things that can happen when tons of strangers come together. My recommendation was Knives Out: In 2 the Donut Hole, but that’s mostly because someone beat me to Knives Out 2: Adam Driver Is In It.
Tumblr media
Classic Action Double Feature: The Magnificent Seven (1960) and The Dirty Dozen (1967)
Your girl loves star-studded team-ups, and it’s never better than when an action movie rounds up its squad of special skills. Also a Charles Bronson double feature! (Bonus: I recommend checking out the 2016 Magnificent Seven remake for a reevaluation of some of the elements that haven’t aged well in the original.)
Tumblr media
Classic Comedy Double Feature: Moonstruck (1987) and Road to Morocco (1942)
Moonstruck is like My Big Fat Greek Wedding meets While You Were Sleeping, and Cher’s 1980s hair is a mood. (Arguably, so is Nicolas Cage’s chest hair.) Road to Morocco is like Airplane! meets Aladdin, and the silliness has hardly aged thanks to the talents of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope.
Tumblr media
Joyful by Ingrid Fetell Lee
The science of joy? This non-fiction book is as fun a read as it should be! It’s not providing answers to deep questions of philosophy, but it’s about a philosophy that can bring life changes. I was amazed by stories of how bright colors, circular spaces, and Northern Lights can inspire joy no matter what your circumstances are. The only problem with this book is that you constantly want to Google every beautiful things she is describing—maybe we need a big coffee table book with photos as a second edition?
Tumblr media
'90s Action Double Feature:Tremors (1990) and The Fugitive (1993)
You know a movie's good when you tense up even though you know what's coming. I'd caught bits and pieces of The Fugitive on TV, but this Harrison Ford/Tommy Lee Jones standoff still sucked me in when I watched it start-to-finish. Tremors is not a good movie—this is a movie so bad it’s great. If on some Friday night you need a big, dumb action movie with terrible dialogue, a monster created with dated special effects, and forgettable characters getting picked off one by one and coasts entirely on the charisma of Kevin Bacon and Reba McEntire (???), have I got the movie for you!
February Critic Picks
Tumblr media
These Pieces on the Grammys Controversy
The New York Times and Variety wrote about why the firing of President/CEO Deborah Dugan and her subsequent lawsuit won’t be disappearing even though the Recording Academy is trying hard as heck to do that. As one too invested in how the arts are recognized and celebrated, I’m paying attention to what appears to be a scandal just waiting to be uncovered.
“Can the Grammys Be Trusted?” by Jon Caramanica (The New York Times)
“The Grammys May Be Over, but the Recording Academy Scandal Isn’t” by Jem Aswad (Variety)
Tumblr media
Dark Passage (1947)
An exception to the trend of weak female roles in the films I watched this month. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart re-team for their third film (of four) together in this romantic film noir. Bogart plays a wrongfully accused escaped convict, and Bacall is the woman who helps him keep his cover. The unconventional first-person camera angles at the beginning will catch your attention, but their chemistry will keep you invested till the end.
youtube
The Oscars
The 2020 Oscars ceremony was one of the most bonkers ceremonies in recent memory. Bonkers is preferable to boring, and I love any night celebrating movies, so I have very few complaints about an evening spent with friends eating movie-themed snacks. (Anyone care for an Adam Screw-Driver?) My favorite moments came thanks to Bong Joon Ho, especially his wins for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director.
youtube
The French Dispatch Trailer (2020)
A star-studded team-up about Midwestern journalists from the aesthetically-pleasing mind of Wes Anderson? Take my money!
youtube
Classic War Comedy Double Feature: Life Is Beautiful (1997) and Dr. Strangelove (1964)
They were both nominated for Best Picture, and they both find humor in the darkest of war. In Life Is Beautiful (La Vita è Bella), a father transforms a Nazi concentration camp into a game to save his son’s innocence. In Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, a bunch of incompetent leaders try to prevent nuclear war. Neither sounds funny, but they pull it off with delicate execution. (Bonus: Enjoy Robert Benigni winning an Oscar!)
Tumblr media
The Slow Rush by Tame Impala
As my brother would say, this album slaps.
youtube
Leap Day Bonus
“What a Man Gotta Do” by the Jonas Brothers
My apologies to the Jo Bros for forgetting to include this in my January Round Up—this movie-inspired music video is a treat.
Also in February…
Yes, I love the Oscars, but considering how much viewership went down, it seems the Academy could do more to draw people in. One of my favorite film podcasts inspired me to brainstorm seven ways the Oscars could make the public care again in a piece for ZekeFilm.
The writers of ZekeFilm counted down our favorite films of 2019, most of which you can find on streaming now.
Kyla and I discussed a rock ‘n’ roll documentary and a camp classic on SO IT’S A SHOW? this month.
If you want to see the full list of movies I watched this month, you can find it on Letterboxd.
Photo credits: Grammys, Tame Impala. Joyful my own. All others IMDb.com.

2020-09-21 - 16:00-18:00 (partial clip show)
This episode was a combination of older clips, and a new segment featuring an interview with the group Osyron and some of their music. I had intended to present an entirely new program with a different set of songs, but life had other plans. This is what what was available under the circumstances. Watch for a new episode next week.

There's a paradox to every roundabout: you can only go so far forward, before you're approaching someplace you've just left behind. The trick knowing when to turn on, when to move on, and when to roll on.
Monday afternoons, listeners have license to take a spin on CKUA's very own Roundabout. Watch our weekly top 30 charts zoom past, as new releases and the latest models make tracks alongside cult classics and motor-vators you might have missed the first time 'round.
Turn on. Tune in. Buckle up. There's a roundabout ahead.

Nick Jonas (HC)
Just a little head canon for my love @cynderros
Requested: Yess
Rating: PG there might be some mild language Idek sorry bbys
Summary: just a lil HC about the one (1) man we all know and love, Nick Jonas
Tumblr media
-I’m sorry but burnin up OR year 3000 would come on in the club and let’s be real you would never deny yourself a chance to dance to those Iconic™ Bops™ -so you and your crew are out on the dance floor jamming to the song when wtf -literally nick Jonas is there a few feet from you out of nowhere -like you start thinking maybe the song summoned him?!?
-so you nervously are stealing glances at him who’s trying not to smile too big at your dancing and lip syncing
-so as the songs ending the two of you make eye contact and you get up the bravery to mouth the lyrics to him but with a huge smile and finger guns and he can’t help but laugh and walk over as the songs ending.
-“so are you a jo-bros fan?” And he’s smiling and probably has a bit of a flush in his cheeks bc let’s be real no matter how long it’s been since nick started drinking it takes him a second to get fully acclimated to alcohol
-you just laugh and nod and try not to sound at all out of breath from the aggressive singing and dancing and you shoo away your friends prying eyes as best you can without embarrassing yourself
-“yeah, I mean how can you not jam to such a timeless work of art?” You question jokingly and nick laughs but shakes his head
-“the only thing timeless about our discography is how cringe-inducing our album covers were,”
-you can’t help but laugh
-“don’t worry, the early 2000s spared nobody, it was a rough time for all of us,” -“would you like a drink?”
-you’re super caught off guard Bc THE Nick Jonas is offering you a drink
-obviously you say sure

Note
technically, year 3000 is a jo bro cover of a good song.
I know. The jonas brother’s first album was mostly cover songs, I think. I don’t remember and year 3000 is one of them. What jonas brothers fan doesn’t know that? I still think they’re talented but they were also underrated and unappreciated which pissed me off sometimes because all people see was a disney boy band with tight pants and purity rings.

I wrote this profile of record producer extraordinaire and philanthropist Tommy LiPuma for The Plain Dealer, on the occasion of a Tri-C JazzFest salute to him that coincided with the “Modern American Masters: Highlights From the Gill and Tommy LiPuma Collection” exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
The Art of Tommy LiPuma
By John Soeder published April 11, 2004, in The Plain Dealer
NEW YORK – Yes, he produced a chart-topping album for Barbra Streisand.
And yes, he also had a hand in Grammy-winning recordings by George Benson, Natalie Cole and Diana Krall.
Running down the mile-long list of his accomplishments as a record producer and music industry executive, however, it’s easy to overlook one of Tommy LiPuma’s most truly remarkable achievements:
He made a Wham! fan out of Miles Davis.
The late, great jazz trumpeter visited LiPuma at home in the 1980s to discuss working together. LiPuma popped a cassette by the George Michael-fronted pop group of “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” fame into the stereo.
Davis “freaked out,” LiPuma says. “He loved it.”
Who knew?
LiPuma recounts the story over lunch at Sistina, his favorite Italian restaurant. It’s not open for lunch, mind you – unless you’re Tommy LiPuma, in which case you and a guest have the dining room all to yourselves on a snowy March afternoon.
Such are the perks when you’re chairman of the world’s largest jazz record company, Verve Music Group. LiPuma, a former Clevelander, has held the title since 1998.
He’ll be back in his hometown this week for the 25th annual Tri-C JazzFest. Benson, Krall, Dr. John, Joe Lovano, Jimmy Scott and others perform Saturday at Playhouse Square’s Allen Theatre in a salute to LiPuma, 67.
“I’m honored,” he says. “On the other hand, it makes you wonder: Are you coming toward the twilight of your career? Frankly, I feel I’m at the top of my game.”
LiPuma co-produced three albums for Davis, starting with 1986’s “Tutu.” It included a cover of “Perfect Way,” originally done by Scritti Politti, another 1980s pop act that LiPuma brought to the attention of Davis.
“He wasn’t what I call a jazz cop,” LiPuma says. “He loved all kinds of music.”
Ditto LiPuma. He wholeheartedly buys into the old Duke Ellington maxim: There are only two kinds of music – the good kind and the other kind.
LiPuma’s latest productions are albums by Al Jarreau and Krall.
Veteran vocalist Jarreau’s “Accentuate the Positive” is due in stores Tuesday, Aug. 3. LiPuma was behind the mixing board for two previous Jarreau releases, “Glow” (1976) and the live double album “Look to the Rainbow” (1977).
“He’s a brilliant producer,” says Jarreau, who performs Friday at the Allen Theatre as part of the JazzFest’s “Silver on Silver” salute to another LiPuma client, hard-bop pianist Horace Silver.
LiPuma has a knack for “knowing artists, knowing what they do, allowing them to do it and then pushing them where he thinks their strengths are — and beyond those strengths,” Jarreau says.
While working on his new album, Jarreau found himself scatting the melody of “Groovin’ High,” a Charlie Parker-Dizzy Gillespie chestnut: “Duh-dut, duh-dut-dut, bah-doo-bee-ooh-bee-ooh-duh-dut’ll-doo-day.…
LiPuma’s ears pricked up. “Is there a lyric, Al?” he asked.
“Well, I’ve thought about doing a lyric for it,” Jarreau replied.
LiPuma encouraged him to go for it.
Jarreau did. The finished track turned out to be “one of my best efforts,” he says.
Krall’s new album, “The Girl in the Other Room,” comes out Tuesday, April 27. It features six songs co-written by the singer-pianist and her husband, rocker Elvis Costello.
LiPuma co-produced “The Girl in the Other Room” with Krall, whom he refers to as “my baby.” He has overseen seven of her eight albums.
“Tommy is my ears — he can hear things I can’t hear,” Krall said in a 2001 interview with The Plain Dealer. “He loves music, art, beauty and all the meaningful things in life, including really good wine.”
At Sistina, LiPuma orders a bowl of pasta. It arrives perfectly al dente and prepared, per his specifications, with cherry tomatoes. A seafood dish follows in short order.
“This is the branzino,” LiPuma says, digging into the Italian-style sea bass. “Delicious!”
Between sips of espresso in the afterglow of the meal, he’ll gladly tell you about working with ultradiva Streisand on “The Way We Were,” her 1974 No. 1 album: “She knows exactly what she wants.”
Or the truth behind “Weekend in L.A.,” singer-guitarist Benson’s 1977 live album: “It wasn’t really as live as it sounded…. We had to redo the vocals.”
Or the emotional experience of recording the title track of Cole’s 1991 “Unforgettable” album, a virtual duet between the singer and her late father, Nat “King” Cole: “When we did it, it stopped all of us in our tracks.”
Lawyers, accountants running the show
LiPuma lights up when he talks about music. But his mood turns somber when the conversation turns to the music business.
“The sooner corporate America gets out of it, the happier I’m going to be,” he says.
Verve Music Group is the parent company of four record labels: Verve, Impulse!, GRP (which LiPuma ran in the 1990s) and Blue Thumb (where LiPuma worked in the late ’60s and early ’70s with such acts as Dan Hicks and Dave Mason).
In addition to a catalog rich with jazz greats (Ellington, Count Basie, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, among others), the company’s current artist roster includes the likes of Krall, Jarreau, Benson, violinist Regina Carter and keyboardist Herbie Hancock.
Verve Music Group is a subsidiary of the world’s leading music company, Universal Music Group, which had revenues of $6 billion in 2003. Universal (itself a division of multinational media conglomerate Vivendi Universal) does not release specific financial data for its subsidiaries.
“The record business used to be basically a group of entrepreneurs … who made gut decisions and ran their own ships,” LiPuma says. “They didn’t have to worry about making their quarter or if Wall Street was going to give them its blessing. They were music people.
"Today, with a few exceptions, you have lawyers and accountants running the show. It’s very unfortunate.”
LiPuma has delegated the day-to-day responsibilities (read: headaches) of running Verve Music Group to his second-in-command, President and CEO Ron Goldstein.
“I handle the creative aspects,” LiPuma says. “When you make records, all you want is the right performance…. As a producer, everything is about waiting for the moment when the artist drops a magic take. One of the most important parts of my job is knowing when the moment happens.”
Magic has struck in the studio time and again for LiPuma, who has made more than 20 gold, platinum or multiplatinum records. He also has won three Grammy Awards: Record of the Year in 1976 for Benson’s smash “This Masquerade,” Album of the Year in 1991 for Cole’s “Unforgettable” and Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2002 for Krall’s “Live in Paris.”
The way he was: Cleveland roots
Born in Cleveland to Italian immigrants, LiPuma was the youngest of five children. His brothers, Joe and Henry, and sister Therese still live in the area; another sister, Josephine, died in 1984.
LiPuma’s family moved often when he was young, from Cleveland’s Kinsman neighborhood to University Heights to Warrensville Heights to Beachwood.
“The radio was always on in our house,” LiPuma says. “In those days, it was Bing Crosby, the Andrews Sisters, Jo Stafford.
"Some way or another, I ended up where I ended up. But I’m a pop junkie. I love great pop music.
"By the time I was 18, I loved bebop — Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, all those guys. But it didn’t take away from my love for pop music.”
When he was 9, LiPuma developed osteomyelitis, a debilitating bone infection. He spent nearly three years laid up in bed.
“The radio became my friend,” he says. “I discovered the R&B station in those days, WJMO, and I started hearing Charles Brown, Louis Jordan, Nat Cole and Ruth Brown. I was a complete R&B nut by the time I was 12.
"Then I started playing saxophone…. I’ll never forget: The music teacher at Shaker Heights Junior High School gave me an F in music because I didn’t show up for a concert.”
LiPuma dropped out of school when he was 18, although he only made it through 10th grade. His illness had left him two grades behind his friends. “I felt out of place,” he says.
By then, he was earning $25 a night playing sax in local clubs.
His father, a barber, sent LiPuma to barber college and gave him a loan to buy a barbershop in the Keith Building on Euclid Avenue in Cleveland. Among his customers were various radio disc jockeys, including future “American Top 40” host Casey Kasem, who used to work at the old WJW AM/850.
But LiPuma’s heart wasn’t into cutting hair. He leased the shop, packed his sax and hit the road for a year with a jazz combo.
Upon his return to Cleveland in 1960, LiPuma got a job as a record promoter with M.S. Distributors.
The following year, he was hired to do promotion for Liberty Records. He later transferred to the company’s music publishing division. LiPuma primarily was based in Los Angeles, although he briefly lived in New York in 1962 and relocated there permanently in 1984.
The first album he produced was “Comin’ Through,” the 1965 debut by an R&B group from Canton — the O’Jays.
Making hits, taking hits
He scored his first gold record one year later with the Sandpipers. The easy-listening trio’s Top 10 single “Guantanamera” was produced by LiPuma, who also recited the spoken-word bit in the middle of the tune: “I am a truthful man from the land of the palm trees… .”
He went on to work as a producer and A&R (artists and repertoire) executive for several other record companies, including A&M, Warner Bros. and Elektra. Along the way, LiPuma collaborated with a range of artists, from Dr. John to Michael Franks to Joe Sample.
Somebody once asked LiPuma how it felt to be the father of smooth jazz. He was mortified.
“I detest — de-test! — smooth jazz,” he says. “Shall I call it the height of mediocrity? Everything has become so predictable.
"The jazz community can blame itself for what ultimately ended up happening with jazz. Basically, it has gone nowhere.”
Some jazz purists blame LiPuma for his pop-savvy meddling — at least to hear him tell it.
“Critics like Gary Giddins hate my [expletive] guts,” LiPuma says. “They think I’m the Antichrist. [Giddins] referred to me as a hack.”
Giddins, former jazz critic for The Village Voice and the author of biographies of Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby and Charlie Parker, is widely regarded as a top jazz authority. (Even LiPuma says Giddins is “erudite.”)
Giddins gave his side of the story via e-mail last week.
“I don’t hate Tommy LiPuma’s ‘[expletive] guts,’ ” he wrote. “It is possible that I once referred to him as a hack, but I can’t recall the occasion and a global search of everything on my hard drive, dating back 20 years, turns up only one mention of his name.”
In a review of the 1997 JVC Jazz Festival, Giddins made a passing reference to LiPuma as “the record industry menace who specializes in convincing good musicians to play bad music.”
‘A rare breed’ and ‘a beautiful cat’
Tommy LiPuma — a “menace”? Jarreau scoffs at the notion.
LiPuma is “a rare breed,” Jarreau says. “Maybe a guy like Tommy is too nice for this industry.”
Sax player David Sanborn, on the bill for the JazzFest’s Silver tribute, has cut a couple of albums with LiPuma.
“You can always tell a Tommy LiPuma production,” Sanborn says. “He makes high-class, high-quality records…. He has the ability to make records with broad appeal, too.
"I don’t think there’s anything intrinsically wrong with a lot of people liking your music. If you’re doing something you don’t believe in, that’s another story. But I don’t think Tommy has ever done that. . . . He has a real passion for the music.”
LiPuma is “a beautiful cat,” says another music legend from Cleveland, jazz singer Jimmy Scott. His 1992 comeback album, “All the Way,” was produced by LiPuma.
“He knows his stuff,” Scott says. “If you have an idea and you talk it over with him, he’ll make it happen. He doesn’t limit his thoughts about the music.”
LiPuma doesn’t limit his interests to music, either.
Paintings by American Modernists usually fill his Park Avenue apartment, although for the time being, the walls are dotted with empty hooks. “Modern American Masters: Highlights From the Gill and Tommy LiPuma Collection” is on view through Sunday, July 18, at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The exhibition features works by some of LiPuma’s favorite artists (not of the recording variety), including Alfred Maurer, Marsden Hartley and Arnold Friedman.
Gill is LiPuma’s wife of 35 years. They have two grown daughters.
“I love art…. You’ve got structure, form, textures — the same things you have in music,” says LiPuma, recently elected a trustee of the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art.
“I’d like to be a private [art] dealer,” he says. “I also still enjoy making records. I don’t want to stop…. At this point, the last thing I’m thinking about is retirement.”

For me, it doesn’t get any better than telling stories about people with a passion for the arts. I wrote this profile of record producer extraordinaire and philanthropist Tommy LiPuma for The Plain Dealer, on the occasion of a Tri-C JazzFest salute to him that coincided with the "Modern American Masters: Highlights From the Gill and Tommy LiPuma Collection" exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

"I detest — de-test! — smooth jazz," he says. "Shall I call it the height of mediocrity? Everything has become so predictable.
"The jazz community can blame itself for what ultimately ended up happening with jazz. Basically, it has gone nowhere."
Some jazz purists blame LiPuma for his pop-savvy meddling — at least to hear him tell it.
"Critics like Gary Giddins hate my [expletive] guts," LiPuma says. "They think I’m the Antichrist. [Giddins] referred to me as a hack."
Giddins, former jazz critic for The Village Voice and the author of biographies of Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby and Charlie Parker, is widely regarded as a top jazz authority. (Even LiPuma says Giddins is "erudite.")
Giddins gave his side of the story via e-mail last week.
"I don’t hate Tommy LiPuma’s ‘[expletive] guts,’ " he wrote. "It is possible that I once referred to him as a hack, but I can’t recall the occasion and a global search of everything on my hard drive, dating back 20 years, turns up only one mention of his name."
In a review of the 1997 JVC Jazz Festival, Giddins made a passing reference to LiPuma as "the record industry menace who specializes in convincing good musicians to play bad music."
‘A rare breed’ and ‘a beautiful cat’
Tommy LiPuma — a "menace"? Jarreau scoffs at the notion.
LiPuma is "a rare breed," Jarreau says. "Maybe a guy like Tommy is too nice for this industry."
Sax player David Sanborn, on the bill for the JazzFest’s Silver tribute, has cut a couple of albums with LiPuma.
"You can always tell a Tommy LiPuma production," Sanborn says. "He makes high-class, high-quality records. . . . He has the ability to make records with broad appeal, too.
"I don’t think there’s anything intrinsically wrong with a lot of people liking your music. If you’re doing something you don’t believe in, that’s another story. But I don’t think Tommy has ever done that. . . . He has a real passion for the music."
LiPuma is "a beautiful cat," says another music legend from Cleveland, jazz singer Jimmy Scott. His 1992 comeback album, "All the Way," was produced by LiPuma.
"He knows his stuff," Scott says. "If you have an idea and you talk it over with him, he’ll make it happen. He doesn’t limit his thoughts about the music."
LiPuma doesn’t limit his interests to music, either.
Paintings by American Modernists usually fill his Park Avenue apartment, although for the time being, the walls are dotted with empty hooks. "Modern American Masters: Highlights From the Gill and Tommy LiPuma Collection" is on view through Sunday, July 18, at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The exhibition features works by some of LiPuma’s favorite artists (not of the recording variety), including Alfred Maurer, Marsden Hartley and Arnold Friedman.
Gill is LiPuma’s wife of 35 years. They have two grown daughters.
"I love art. . . . You’ve got structure, form, textures — the same things you have in music," says LiPuma, recently elected a trustee of the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art.
"I’d like to be a private [art] dealer," he says. "I also still enjoy making records. I don’t want to stop. . . . At this point, the last thing I’m thinking about is retirement."

“Just Because You Can” Part 3 of 7, Chapters 9-11
[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7 FIN]
The Pines triplets, Mabel, Dipper, and Jolene, have always been best friends. But lately, there’s been some distance growing between the Mystery Kids, due in part to the forbidden feelings with which they are each struggling. How will they manage to see eye to eye, when torn between wanting each other and craving adventure?
(This is a new AU that I’ve been calling Jolene AU, devised by myself and @handleonthescandal after one of us asked the question “What if Mabel and Dipper were triplets but with another sister?”. Although this AU is similar, it is not connected to Double Dippin’ AU, and Jolene is in no way connected to Tyrone.)
Shoutout to @sirwaddlesesquire for being the trustiest squire and an insightful, helpful, and supportive beta.
Mostly SFW, mostly angst with some action/adventure and a little bit of fluff, tw incest
Fic under the cut, enjoy!
Chapter 9: Operation Tessie
Friday had felt like it would never end, so great was Dipper’s anticipation for Operation Tessie. But finally, as he knew it would, the day had come. He and Jo had risen early, eaten breakfast, grabbed the packs they had prepared the night before, and backed the Chariot out of the driveway before the sun (or the rest of their family) had stirred from their rest. Dipper had lost the race to the car, as usual, because despite his significantly longer legs, Jolene had the advantage of being a cheater. That meant he had been the one sitting behind the wheel as the sky lightened to a milky hue.
In contrast to their daily drive to school, they hadn’t played any music on the drive. There was something sacred about the pale quiet morning that neither of them wanted to disturb. Jo had sat in the passenger seat, turning the waterproof camera they’d pooled cash for last year absentmindedly in her lap. They had spoken little, both silently prepping for the adventure ahead.
The sun was high in the sky now, shining bright and hot on the woods. Dipper was grateful for the shade of the trees, but still found sweat wetting the back and underarms of his tee shirt. They’d parked the station wagon on the little gravel lot by the trailhead for Cave Rock. Cave Rock was a large natural rock formation on the southeastern shore of Lake Tahoe. The hike to the top was short, easy, and popular. The trips had done it with dad once years ago, and in a photo album somewhere, was a picture of the three of them grinning wide photo-ready smiles with the tableau of the lake behind them. Dipper smiled inwardly to himself thinking of it. He’d stood in the middle of his two sisters, as he customarily did for pictures, wearing the electric blue Monstermon tee shirt that had been brand new and treasured at the time. He still had it in the back of his tee shirt drawer, though it was much to small and worn thin, the decal faded and cracked, in some places peeled off completely. Mabel had been on his right, an explosion of gleeful little girliness. She’d insisted on wearing a cotton candy pink tutu over her jeans, and their parents had allowed it, already knowing better than to stand between Mabel and her overzealous fashion choices. Her hair was pulled into pigtails on either side of her head and she was smiling that signature huge Mabel smile, showing off her uneven pre-braces teeth, eyes directed mischievously at the bunny ears she held poised over Dipper’s head. Jo had stood to Dipper’s left, her shorts revealing scabby knees and bandaids on her shins, battle scars from climbing the knotted branches of the Dogwood tree in their backyard. Her auburn hair, worn longer then than it was now, was fluffing out of a single french braid Mabel had done for her in the car. Jolene wasn’t looking at the camera, though. Although she had a smile obediently plastered on her face, her head was turned so that the photo captured her profile. Her right arm was looped loosely around her brother’s waist, but her left hand shielded her eyes from the glare of the sun, casting a shadow over her face as she looked out of the picture’s borders into the distance, impatient to go back to exploring.
They weren’t doing the hike to the summit of Cave Rock today, though. They had come in the entrance of that trail, but instead of following the white blazes that marked the ascent to the top, they had broken away to make their way toward the water. It was tough going some of the way, when game trails petered off and they had to bushwhack their way through underbrush and tread carefully on uneven ground. They had worn their swimsuits underneath their clothes, in case the need to go in the water should arise, and as the day got hotter and hotter the prospect of swimming was sounding more and more appealing to Dipper. It’s early enough in the season that the water will be really cold, Dipper noted, Cold sounds pretty damn good right now.
“Are we theeeeere yet?” Jo whined sarcastically, although Dip could hear a tinge of very real impatience in her voice.
“If my estimate’s correct, we oughta get down to water level in the next ten minutes or so,” Dipper replied. He squinted through the trees at the unmistakable glint of the sun on the water’s surface.
“Sir, yes, sir,” Jo said with a stiff salute, “If that’s what your calculations deduced I daresay that hypothesis is sound.”
“Ya know, if you didn’t want an answer, you could have tried not asking me every three minutes,” Dipper pointed out.
“But Bro-tective,” Jo said with a falsely sweet smile, “Your hypotheses are always so exciting.”
Dipper rolled his eyes but smiled. Jo was totally in her element. She never shone as brilliantly as when she was in her hiking boots, traipsing through the woods, hot on the trail of one mystery or other. Like a plant, she wilted indoors but flourished and brightened in the presence of sun and fresh air. She was moving at a brisk pace, taking in her surroundings happily, her focus never wavering from Tessie awaiting them somewhere ahead. She walked ahead of Dipper and the life jacket attached to her pack swung a little from side to side with each step, in unison with her short, springy ponytail. It was all Dipper could do to train his eyes on the orange life jacket and try to keep them from gravitating down to her round bottom.
Jo asked how long it would be twice more before they reached the rocky shoreline. It was common lore that Tessie lived in a subterranean cave beneath Cave Rock and they’d agreed to start their search with that. The leaves and soil gave way to pebbles and flat fragmented stretches of stone underfoot.
“Fiiiinally!” Jo exclaimed, spreading her arms and giving one grateful spin before picking up the pace and rushing ahead.
“Wait, Jo-jo!” Dipper called, speeding up to follow her, “Let’s review the plan.”
Jolene gave a prolonged groan, but stopped and turned to face him. She crossed her arms impatiently and pinned him with an unrelenting green gaze. God, her eyes are amazing out here, the sight of them always struck Dipper when they were out amongst the trees like this, “Fine, fine,” she said, “Tell me the plan again.”
“I don’t like your tone, young lady,” Dipper said, in his spot-on impersonation of dad.
“Ew, no,” Jo said, covering her ears, “Uncle! Uncle!  I’ll listen to the plan. Just please don’t do the dad voice, it’s so skeevyyy!”
Dipper grinned at her dismay and retrieved the typed out plan from the pocket of his swim trunks. He unfolded it and said, “Let’s see… m’kay, we already completed steps 1A through 3C,” he nibbled his lip in lieu of a pen, “Whiiiich brings us to 4A.”
“...which is?” Jo prompted in a bored tone.
“ ‘Upon reaching the shoreline,’ ” Dipper read, “ ‘Assess the presence of any cave openings or irregularities at the base of Cave Rock.’ ”
“No, duh,” Jo grumbled, turning on her heel to do just that.
“It goes on to state the following,” Dipper continued, “ ‘4B1, In the case of no openings or irregularities apparent, fan out in either direction to assess the nearby shore.’ or ‘4B2, In the case of apparent openings and/or irregularities, screen for evidence of preternatural presence (i.e. shed scales, ectoplasm, tracks, or other byproducts of the extra-ordinary).’ ”
“Cool beans, boss,” Jo said, shooting Dip finger-guns, “Or, in layman’s terms, look around for weird stuff.”
Dipper gave a long-suffering sigh, “Yes. Look around for weird stuff.” A companionable silence fell between the two of them as they moved forward, taking in their surroundings carefully in search of ‘weird stuff’.
Chapter 10: Operation Tessie, Cont’d
Jolene’s body thrummed with the purpose of adventure. She could practically smell Tessie nearby. The banks near the base of Cave Rock were stony and precarious, so, though her mind pushed her to leap into action, she had to proceed with care. Dipper moved along the base of the rock face in one direction while Jo took the other. The anticipation and promise of something, anything, hung too heavy in the air to leave room for errant conversation. She moved along, keeping her eyes peeled for any ‘opening and/or irregularity’.
“Jo-jo! Over here!” Dipper called behind her. He was about twenty feet away but she was beside him in an instant. Before she could ask or he could explain, she saw what he’d seen. There was a small inlet of the lake, no more than six feet across. It looked unremarkable enough, but it was worth further investigation. Jo dropped her pack on the ground and set about unlacing her boots. Dipper stared at her, “What are you doing?”
“What does it look like I’m doing, brainiac?” she asked, without looking up, peeling off a sock and stuffing it into her shoe, “I’m going swimming.”
“4B2, Jo, we’re looking for evidence of the preternatural,” Dipper reminded her, sounding miffed.
To hell with 4B2, I ain’t gettin’ any younger here, the voice of adventure complained in Jo’s head, “Yeah, that’s what I’m doin’, Dip-man,” she said, trying to appease him, as she shucked the sock from her other foot and stood in her bare feet on the pebbles, cool in the shade of Cave Rock.
“C’mon, Jo,” Dipper said, his voice taking on some of its old squeakiness as Jolene undid her fly and wiggled out of her jeans, “Can’t you just follow the plan we agreed on?”
“Dipper, Jesus, I already told you I am!” Jo said as she pulled her sweaty tee shirt off over her head. The muscles in her brother’s jaw were tight, his gaze darkening now that she stood in front of him in just her teal one-piece bathing suit, “I’m looking for ‘evidence of the preternatural’ down there, in the ‘opening or irregularity’!” I love him, but I’m not letting his reticent bullshit stand between me and Tessie, Jo thought fiercely, as she nudged Dipper out of her way, and jumped unceremoniously into the water.
“Jo!” Dipper called uselessly as his sister’s head disappeared under the water with a splash, “...your life jacket.” He said, effectively to himself, for all the good it did.
Jo kept her eyes open, true to her word that she was looking for evidence. The water was cold, but no colder than she’d expected. She was pleasantly surprised that the water was deeper in the inlet that it had appeared. It had only looked about seven feet deep, but it was never easy to tell with naturally occurring bodies of water like this one. In fact, it was much deeper than that, at least fifteen feet. And beautiful. It was another world. The rocky basin of the lake was worn smooth from thousands of years of gentle currents, and slick and lush everywhere with dark green aquatic vegetation. The muffling effect of water pressure was a welcome otherworldly silence in her ears. The sunlight penetrated the surface and filtered through the lazy waves in slowly-rippling lines of green-blue.
Jo propelled herself forward with one smooth breaststroke and had to resist the instinct to gasp at the sight before her. There was a roughly round opening in the bedrock in front of her. The top of the opening was mere inches below the surface of the water. Desperate to see more before her breath ran out, Jo kicked her legs and pushed herself forward with her arms until she was at the mouth of the opening. It was just under four feet across at its widest part and dark within. Jolene’s heart was racing, wishing with all her heart she could breathe underwater, not wanting to waste time surfacing, knowing Dipper would waste more of her time with his stupid plan. But she could hold her breath no longer.
In the time Jolene had been submerged, Dipper had irritably stripped off his clothes and was securing his life jacket on. Jo’s head broke the surface, gulping deep breaths of air. Before Dipper could get a word in, Jo’s eyes found his. Oh no, he thought, seeing the familiar light of chaotic zeal in her eyes. It was the look his sister got whenever she was on the brink of adventure, when she was feeling alive in the face of danger. She gave him a slightly crazed grin, and said simply, “Cave!”
“Jo, you need your life jack--”
“Did you hear me, Dip-man?!” Jo cut him off, “I found a cave!”
“Okay, but--”
“No, Dip!” She snapped, scrambling out of the water and unfastening her pack, “Fuck the life jacket! I need a flashlight and the camera!”
Dipper wanted to insist, he wanted to yell at her, to convince her, but his voice died in his throat at the sight of her. Her bathing suit was soaked, and clung to every inch of her body. He could see the small nubs of her nipples, hardening under her suit as the air cooled against her. She bent over to rifle through the contents of her pack, and he was presented with the sight of the wet fabric snug against her rear. He swallowed hard as his gaze followed the cleft of her ass down between her legs, where it became a cleft of an entirely different nature. He could clearly see the shape of her lips and watched, transfixed, as a drop of water gathered and fell from them, distantly aware of his stiffening erection.
Jo had only one thing on her mind and it was getting into that cave. She retrieved the underwater flashlight and the camera in no time and turned back to the water without giving Dipper a second glance. “Oh, fuck it,” she heard him mumble behind her and a splash a second later. She looked over her shoulder to see his head emerging from the water, shaking the water from his hair like a dog. He had ditched his life jacket next to hers.
“Good of you to join me,” she teased, “The cave’s right in front of us, and the mouth is big enough for us to fit through.” She took a deep breath and dove back under without further explanation. Dipper cursed to himself again before following her lead.
She had switched on the flashlight and he instantly saw the cave she had been describing. He swam forward until he was beside her, studying the slippery walls of the cave entrance. His eyes widened at the sight of something by his right shin. He bent fluidly in the water to retrieve it and held it up for Jo to see with him. Sure enough, it was exactly what he’d thought. A scale. It was about an inch or two larger than the palm of his hand, and unmistakable. It was hard to tell the color underwater, but it shone with an indifferent iridescence. He slipped it into the pocket of his suit and Jo smiled at him, keeping her lips shut, and offered a fist bump.
As he reciprocated, a rush of murky-smelling water came from within the cave, and Jolene and Dipper retreated in opposite directions, each laying their back against the stone to either side of the cave. With the suddenness of a train flashing by in a subway station, something large and dark flew out of the hole in the rock. Tessie! Jo and Dipper exchanged a millisecond-long look of disbelief before each kicking off of the stone and swimming to catch up with the object of their search.
With the beam of the flashlight directed at her and her trajectory leading her into the better lit openness of the lake, the creature looked to be about thirty feet in length. Description of her had varied anywhere from snake to seal to dolphin. Dipper had not gotten a good look at her head, but her body was most like that of a salamander. Long, supple, and soft with four webbed feet and a tail. She moved by a combination of wriggling like a snake and paddling like a salamander. She moved at a neat pace, but it was not hard to keep up with her. She was a beautiful black, shining cobalt and green like the plumage of a Grackle.
Dipper had been so taken with the sight of her, that he had stopped watching for Jolene. He looked around now, panic-stricken. In his mind suddenly vivid fears were bursting like flashbulbs, of bubbles streaming from Jo’s drowning mouth, of her soft body dashed against the rocks. A flash of pale skin alerted him to her location and he swore at her loudly in his head. She was just beside Tessie’s head, flashlight tucked between her body and her elbow, holding the camera up and desperately snapping pictures. Instinct to protect his sister overwhelmed instinct to protect himself and Dipper cried out for her, water rushing immediately into his mouth and lungs.
Jo didn’t hear him and didn’t realize at first what happened, but Tessie’s ears, more sensitive than theirs to the vibrations in her waters, whirled around at once, her fleshy tail colliding with Dipper’s side and flinging him through the water.
Jo’s thirst for proof was intoxicating, maddening, clouding her senses. Tessie was right there. But this wasn’t just about Tessie, it was about all the past adventures she had missed, all the future adventures that victory could open the door to. Tessie twisted again in the water and presented Jolene with a perfect composition, revealing her entire form, the details of her face and color of her scales revealed by a shaft of watery light. Jo mashed the button on the camera without ceasing until Tessie had swam swiftly away.
With Tessie’s retreat, sense began to return to Jolene. Her lungs were on fire, screaming for air. And a rush of shameful adrenaline shot through her when her mind landed on Dipper, and she swam as hard as she could in the direction Tessie had thrown him.
Chapter 11: Homeward
Despite the success of their journey, Jo and Dipper did not speak much on the ride home. A shamefaced Jolene had offered to drive and Dipper had shrugged silently and climbed into the passenger seat. It was uncomfortable sitting in their wet bathing suits, but neither of them complained. It didn’t matter.
Dipper fumed quietly as Jo drove. This shit is exactly why we need a plan, he repeated to himself for the hundredth time, we cannot do things that way. They had been lucky this time. When Tessie had struck him, she had pushed him back into the inlet where they’d jumped in. Fortunately, he hadn’t been too out of it to recognize his surroundings and had managed to crawl out of the lake, hacking up the water in his lungs and trying to get his bearings. Jo did not follow for a few minutes, and Dipper had spent those minutes in a complete panic. Before his breathing had even returned to its normal rhythm, an anxiety attack was upon him. He was convinced that Jo was dead, that she’d died on his watch, that he’d led her to a watery grave.
I knew, he had chastised himself, I saw the signs. She was acting crazy, stupid, she was going to get herself killed. A toxic self-loathing bubbled in his chest. When she came out of the water, he should have stopped her. Should have made her see, should have forced her to see reason. But you were too busy checking her out, you sicko. The sight of her wet bathing suit snug against her skin was vivid in his mind and it doused him in shame. You were too busy ogling your sister to protect her. Not fucking cool, man. That is your only and most important job.
When she had popped out of the water, gasping for air and calling his name, his anxiety had transformed instantly into anger. It’s not my fault, he realized, the situation coming clear in his mind, it’s her fault. She put us both in harm’s way! A thought had popped into his head, suddenly, uninvited, of Mabel at home. They’d left that morning while she’d been asleep, hadn’t said goodbye, and with the reckless dangerous bullshit that Jo just pulled, it’s a miracle we’re both going home. Anger and guilt and sadness tore at the inside of his ribs, at the thought of Mabel up all night, worrying why her two best friends hadn’t come home, hadn’t called, hadn’t even hugged her goodbye or said where they were going.
Jo’s impulsiveness had gotten them in trouble plenty of times before. And it was bad enough that Jo had almost gotten him killed, could have gotten herself killed, but she would’ve broken Mabel’s heart, without even caring. That, Dip couldn’t forgive.
You’re such a piece of shit. You’re such a piece of shit. You’re such a piece of shit. The mantra in Jolene’s head had hardly let up since Tessie had swam away. In an oxygen-deprived frenzy, she had scoured the area for her brother’s inert form before admitting she couldn’t help him if she let herself drown. When she’d come up for air, she’d found him sitting on the stony bank with a stormy look on his face. Dipper didn’t anger easily, but when he did, he made no effort to hide it. They’d dressed and hiked back to the car without saying more than ten words to each other, and even less since they’d been on the road.
A sharp, sorry feeling gnawed at Jo’s insides. She had gotten so caught up in Tessie, in the proximity of victory, in the thrill of the chase, she’d practically forgotten Dipper was there. She’d felt so invincible, she’d forgotten that she wasn’t. She’d forgotten that he wasn’t either. You are such an unbelievable piece of shit, she told herself again. Yes, they’d both wanted this, but she had acted like an idiot. I should maybe have paid a little more attention to the plan.
“Learn to follow a plan,” Dipper said, as if he’d read her mind, his voice dangerously quiet, “Learn to follow a plan, or this is the last adventure I go on with you.”
“Okay,” Jo said, her voice whistling out of her pathetically.
“I’m serious,” Dipper said, leaning his head against the headrest and shutting his eyes, “No more ditching a plan the minute you find a clue. No more unnecessary risk.” he sighed, “It seems like I can’t keep you from trying to get yourself killed, but you’re not going to get us both killed.” She saw him grimace out the corner of her eye, “I’m not doing that to Mabes.”
Jolene had thought she felt bad before, but those words hit her like a truck. You’re a reeeeeal piece of shit, Jolene Pines, the voice in her head insisted, You love your sister enough to watch her change and jack off to her, but not enough to consider how much you could be breaking her heart. Way to fucking go. The tears were rolling silently down her cheeks before she even realized they were in her eyes, “I’m sorry, Dipper,” she said softly.
“Just don’t pull this shit again,” he said simply. They were both quiet for a moment, stewing in their private guilt, before Dipper asked tentatively, “Did you… did you get a good shot?”
Jo shook her head, “I’m not sure. I think so, but I, uh, I haven’t looked.”
Dipper reached into the backseat and fumbled around for the camera. He turned it on and used the preview feature to flip through the photos Jo had taken, “Wow,” he said softly.
“Wow good or wow bad?”
“Wow good, Jo,” Dipper said, a hint of excitement rising in his voice, “Wow very fucking good.”
A few minutes later, Jo pulled the Mystery Machine into their driveway. Her heart twinged with relief at being home, and guilt that she was almost the reason they didn’t make it home. Too exhausted and excited to worry about it, they left their packs in the backseat and went inside with only the camera. No sooner than they opened the door than they were greeted by the smell of food cooking and Mabel’s voice, “Jo-jo? Dip? Is that you guys?”
“Yeah,” Dipper called, with a somewhat bashful smile, “It’s us, c’mere!”
Mabel came tearing into the room from the kitchen, the smell of some feast clinging to her and making their stomachs grumble. As if she wasn’t irresistible enough, Dipper thought, breathing the aroma in deep, such a welcome change from the murky lake smell that clung to himself and Jo. She explained that she was making dinner for all of them. Mom and dad had gone out (something they’d been doing a lot, trying to ‘rekindle the spark’ or something) and she figured they’d have worked up at appetite with all that mystery-hunting. Both Dipper and Jo felt the guilt clamp down a little harder on their hearts, imagining Mabel waiting at home with a full supper getting cold on the table, laid out for siblings that weren’t coming back.
However, they pushed the feeling aside and mustered the appropriate enthusiasm to show her the best photos of Tessie and the scale they’d swiped from the entrance to her cave. Mabel bounced excitedly on the balls of her feet and hugged them and congratulated them, assuring them that they were ‘totes gonna win’. After a few minutes of jubilation, Dipper and Jo excused themselves to get cleaned up before the food was ready.
Mabel walked back into the kitchen and let her excited facade fall. She covered her face with her hands and took deep steadying breaths, trying with all her might not to cry. They match, she told herself brokenly, They come in all sunburned and exhausted and stinky and I’m here like a dumb housewife, putting dinner on the table. But why would they care about that? She sniffled, taking her hands from her face to stir one of the pots on the stove, Why would they want this when they could have someone brave and smart like them? They’d both glowed with the same weary pride as they showed her the proof they’d brought back, and there was only room for two in that pool of light. Whatever it was that had happened to the two of them out there in Tahoe today was just another thing between them of which she could never be a part.

round up // JANUARY 20
Tumblr media
I laughed! I cried! January was an emotional month in the world of pop culture. These were my favorites in a month of travel and hunkering inside away from the cold.
January Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch (2019)
The cast addresses whether or not this is an ironic kids’ special at the top, but I still don’t feel confident labeling it. I laughed start to finish because of songs and sketches about algebra, plain pasta, and Jake Gyllenhaal’s incompetence teaching music. Bonus: Singing this soundtrack at the top of your lungs is a great stress-reliever.
Tumblr media
Fine Line by Harry Styles (2019)
He dresses like Prince and dances like Mick Jagger. “She” feels like a late-era Beatles track, and “Canyon Moon” could have been on a Simon and Garfunkel record. It’s insanely re-listenable and more emotionally and artistically mature than his original solo album.
Tumblr media
A Trip to Stars Hollow
My second Warner Bros. Studio Tour was even more magical than my first thanks to the recreation of the Gilmore Girls set. The best part? I went with one of my best friends, my Gilmore Girls podcast co-host, Kyla. Find out why it was so magical on our podcast.

A Quiet Place: Part II Trailer (2020)
Is this movie an unnecessary sequel? Probably. Am I going see it? Totally.
Tumblr media
Beach Too Sandy, Water Too Wet Podcast (2018 - )
I haven’t laughed this hard because of a podcast in awhile. (Maybe since Gilmore Guys?) A brother-sister team reads some of the pettiest online reviews in a most dramatic fashion, and it’s just as genius an idea as it sounds.
Tumblr media
Newsies (1992)
The journalism student in me felt a kinship to this kid-friendly introduction to the power of the written word accompanied by Kenny Ortega dance moves. Further confirmation that if I’d been older in the ‘90s, Bill Pullman would have been the dreamboat covering the posters on my bedroom wall.
youtube
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist (2020 - )
Not a perfect pilot, but it did succeed in making my cry. You know I love musicals and Lauren Graham, so you know I’ll be back for the second episode.
Tumblr media
SNL with Adam Driver
My favorite actor of the moment (and I suspect for many moments to come) hosted one of the best episodes of the season. Not just anyone can hold an audience captive like he does, and he killed it in his monologue. (See Styles for another rare example). Don’t miss the highlights from this episode, including a very catchy Oscars song from Melissa Villaseñor:
“Chill Monologue”
“Undercover Boss: Where Are They Now”
Sleepover”
“Weekend Update: Melissa Villaseñor on Oscar Snubs”
January Critic Picks
Tumblr media
Late Season Awards Contenders
Okay, some of these were late for me. This month I watched The Two Popes, The Farewell, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, 1917, and Marriage Story, and—spoiler alert!—they all made my Best of 2019 list. See where these 5 and 15 more rank in my top 20.
Tumblr media
Little Women (1933, 1949, 1994)
Wait, wasn’t this movie on my list last month? The 2019 version sure was, but since then, I’ve watched the 1933 and 1949 versions for the first time and refreshed myself on the 1994 classic. They confirmed Greta Gerwig’s new adaptation is my favorite, but there’s not a bad one in the bunch. (Katharine Hepburn as Jo! Elizabeth Taylor as Amy!) Kudos to Turner Classic Movies for interviewing Gerwig to introduce the ’33 and ’49 versions when they aired.
Tumblr media
Stage Door (1937)
Katharine Hepburn? Ginger Rogers? Together? That’s all I needed to hit play on this one. They lead a cast of talented ladies in a funny (and at times, tragic) take on the classic saga of trying to make it as a star. A Best Picture nominee!
Tumblr media
To Be or Not to Be (1942)
If you liked Jojo Rabbit or Inglourious Basterds, you’ll want to check out this contemporary World War II Nazi comedy they both borrow from a lot. The jokes still hold up today.
Tumblr media
The Good Place Finale
A lot of things on this list made me cry, but this was ugliest cry of them all. The Good Place is was one of the greatest modern TV comedies (I’m having trouble accepting the past tense), but the last episode went in deep on the philosophy that set it apart from most shows on television and sent me more than once to prayer.
Also in January...
Oh, did you catch I wrote my Best of 2019 piece? It’s one of my most favorite (and most agonizing) pieces to write every year, so I’m going to just drop the link again right here.
In addition to our magical trip to Stars Hollow, Kyla and I watched birth episodes from the classic sitcoms I Love Lucy and The Dick Van Dyke Show.
The writers at ZekeFilm caught up on classics from the 2010s we never got around to. Me? I finally watched 12 Years a Slave. We’ve also been catching up on Oscar-nominated shorts, and I covered the heartwarming Hair Love.
Now that I’m all caught up on Best Picture nominees (even if not all of them made my Best of 2019 list), my Letterboxd is getting refueled with Turner Classic Movies picks again. (Yay!)

Note
today is the anniversary of my 2013 Jo Bros concert so I plan on wearing my tour shirt all day and being emo about your earlier post about their 1st album they did covers of 2 Busted songs the other one was What I Go To School For (one of my faves) the lyrics in the Busted versions are definitely more sexual though
Aw! It’s okay to be emotional. My 2013 concert anniversary is coming up too. On the 16th. Best day ever! Thinking nothing could go wrong and they prove us wrong, a couple of months later. I plan to do the same as you is to wear my concert shirt and watch many many jobros video so i can cry. So it’s that song…to be honest…not my favorite but I’d listen to the busted version since I’ve never done that.
