Fellow Peter Pan fans, if you haven’t yet heard the Ballarat National Theater’s dramatized audiobook version, I highly recommend checking it out! It’s available for free on Apple Podcasts or in the Audible app (and probably other places as well). I’ll include a link below. It sticks pretty closely to the novel in most places but departs from it in a few ways that I think, for the most part, actually really add to the story rather than taking away from it. (Note: If you don’t want any spoilers about how the audio version differs from the actual novel, stop reading now and go directly to the link. If you want all the details, keep reading below the cut.)

A few things I noticed and found particularly interesting that the audio drama changed or added to the novel include the following:

- We get an actual voice actress for Tink and even someone doing the “voice” of Nana’s thoughts rather than just having the narrator read them.

- There is at least one bonus pirate and one bonus lost boy because??? The bonus lost boy is named Pockets (assuming after the character in Hook). The bonus pirate is called Chameleon.

- Skylights breaks the 4th wall and tells the narrator he doesn’t want to die as a demonstration and the narrator basically comes back with, “Sorry, that’s too bad, but this isn’t your story so….”

- Hook has a middle name and it’s the one Disney uses in Jake-verse (Bartholomew).

- Tiger Lily’s people are called “The Neverlanders” and are generally treated much more respectfully than in the novel and most other retellings in general. Their tribe is said to speak a language that is a precursor to Latin.

- The fairies crossing over Peter are on their way home from a “fairy ball.” I cackled because, man, that’s one of those, “If you know, you know,” things that most probably wouldn’t pick up on but I found hilarious. (It was definitely a ball and not an orgy… 😂)

- More 4th wall breaking by Tiger Lily, telling the narrator she was perfectly capable of escaping from the pirates herself.

- There are a couple of short breaks with these extra scenes. In one, the Lost Boys are griping about how the narrator is taking forever to get back to the story and reading over reviews from listeners.

- During a fight scene when Mr. Smee pulls out “Johnny Corkscrew,” we get a “Heeeeeere’s Johnny!” 😂 Definitely not a reference I was expecting!

- In another very cute short interruption, Mr: Smee is making soup and claims it has a bunch of disgusting stuff in it but Wendy is sure he’s joking and says it’s actually alright but missing something. The boys all start helpfully adding things they’ve found or brought with them—some of which are questionable—and then they ask Smee to try it. He acts like it has poisoned him and they’re all very concerned before he pops up with a, “Boo!” and they all laugh.

- Also, it’s hinted at one point that Mr. Smee may be a “Mrs.” in disguise. This may simply be a joke about the fact that the voice actor for Smee in this version is a woman or it might be something else. I suppose it’s left up to the listener.

- Peter has a few interesting parallels with Hook. Near the part where he is flying away out of the nursery window to leave the children, he has a quote that is very similar if not the exact same as one that Hook gives during his soliloquy.

- I’m just gonna say it straight out… I LOVE what they did with Hook in this version. They kept the dual casting of Mr. Darling and Hook and he’s the perfect actor for it. He has the sort of “growl” and the way of rolling his R’s that reminds me in some ways of Hans’ performance. They also do some great but subtle parallels between George and Hook. And during some of Hook’s rambling/soliloquy moments, we get most of what is in the book but it’s interspersed with a few things references to Shakespeare and Pilkington (a character in The Little White Bird who was based on a real-life teacher and who was sort of an early inspiration for/iteration of Hook). The ending for Hook is painful but incredibly well done. This Hook reacts to the crocodile much like “my” Hook does… When he is thinking, “The crocodile is about to board the ship” and when he asks the men to hide him, he starts just…repeating himself over and over in an increasingly desperate tone… Then, later, he has this almost…sigh of relief when Peter kicks before, “Bad form,” which is said less as an exclamation and more like…he’s releasing this weight off his shoulders. After the narrator says, “He went content to the crocodile,” we hear Hook humming something which I believe is the same tune we later hear Mary Darling playing in the nursery on the piano as the kids are coming home (“Home Sweet Home”). There is a quiet splash and a growl from the crocodile…and he’s gone. It’s perhaps the gentlest and most poignant ending I’ve seen done for Hook, and I really loved it. Mr. Darling is later heard singing a snatch of a sea shanty (“The Maid of Amsterdam”) and it’s like this little piece of Hook lives on. It’s just…super lovely.

So yeah. Love this version. LOVE this Hook. Go give it a listen!

I don't think this Talk about tae queerbating comes from him beeing supportive. It comes from some people not liking how he mentioned/ talked about JK in chapter 2.

So... his comment about them reaching Hot100 is perfectly in line with what he was talking about. He's gone solo, everybody else has gone solo, some of them got Hot100 number ones even. Where's the problem here? It completely explains why the congratulations happened at that time. It wasn't a live congratulations, it was a contextual one.

I'm going to probably explain this really badly 😝 but here goes.

I was wondering about your thoughts on how they used sound clips that were not from the footage the viewer is seeing in ep. 3? I'm not sure what you would call this type of editing but a moment I found peculiar was when they were trying on the North Face clothes.

We see the 3 of them going through the items/trying different things on, then we see JK trying a jacket, then Jimin with a jacket on turning around.

The audio doesn't match. You hear JK talk about the clothes. Then Jimin asking how he looks to JK. (not to mention how the messed up subtitle saga continues 🙄)

The second time I noticed the same type of editing happen was at the end of the episode at the go-kart place. After JK did his circling of his go-kart in front of Jimin & Taehyung, we see Jimin do that frog thing lol then we have a wide shot including both scenery and them in the corner chatting, then a drone shot, and the audio is of Jimin & JK talking about the day's activities with added music as well.

This second case felt right to me. It gave a bit of reflection and wrapped up the episode. 

But in the first case, I’m a bit confused. What was the creative choice there?

Not having appropriate footage of them (i.e. 1 person was not decent/not covered up) when they were having that conversation trying on the clothes? Then why use the audio at all? There wasn’t consistency in the use of this type of editing choice so it stuck out to me.

Anyways, just looking for some insight from someone with knowledge such as you.

Hello there! I'm so thrilled you sent this in! I love chatting about this stuff and you helped me notice something with this scene as well.

To your point, yes, there are usually a few reasons why editors will play audio from one scene as a voiceover for another.

It's an extremely useful tool for transitions, helping to build a bridge between two scenes.

In traditional TV and movies it's also most frequently used as a bandaid to cover when they want to change the lines an actor says after they've already been filmed.

It also can be purely stylistic. They did this in this episode at the end of the bit where vmin talk to jk on his bike for their mafia/hitman role play. The final dialogue as a voiceover helped continue the fun and fantastical moment.

For the moment you mentioned when they're changing clothes, I suspect it's edited this way purely as a utility for one reason: The guys aren't wearing their mics so there was no audio that matched up with the moment they decided to show. I'd easily wager there was a brand deal with the North Face to have the members wear some of these clothes as product placement. In that case, brands usually will have requirements about how much screentime specifically highlights their product and my even require approval of the final segment. The guys are obviously used to this so they made sure to record some good dialogue when they did have their mics on but the footage we got is more dynamic than them just complimenting straightforward to a camera. That would be my guess as to why this specific moment was edited like this.

Fun fact though: Tae never put his mic back on after getting out of the pool until after they put these clothes on. And JK only donned his while JM was taking that pic that was only the top of Tae's head. I'd wager they flipped the chronology of when Tae took his scooter ride cuz he and JK both have mics on when he gets back and I highly doubt Tae wouldn't have walked right by him if Jimin was still asleep on the ground when he got back.

Anyway, thanks again for the ask. I may be incorrect about why anything was done this specific way in these episodes but it's fun to chat about the possibilities.

Times Jungkook Debunked Every Other Ship

People love to ship Jungkook with every woman that breathes next to him and well, Tae. Really, they love to ship him with everyone and anyone that has a name that doesn’t start with Jim and end with In. However, Jungkook has time and time again shown us where his affections lie. It’s not like he’s always doing it intentionally or to always prove a point. He, like anyone in a relationship, is exclusive when it comes to his partner. He does things for only Jimin that debunks any theories that involve him being with anyone other than Jimin. Let’s take a look at his “exclusivity.”

Birthday Gifts

Giving Birthday gifts in and of itself doesn’t scream relationship. However, giving a birthday present to only one member out of a 7 person group does raise a few red flags. 

This moment doesn’t necessarily debunk the notion that Jungkook is dating someone outside the group but it 100% debunks the notion that he’s dating Tae or anyone else in BTS.  Because let’s be real...if JK gave Jimin his supposed non boyfriend a gift for his birthday and not Tae, his supposed boyfriend then JK is a crappy boyfriend!

Also, let’s not forget the most romantic birthday gift of all...the all expense paid trip to Tokyo with the complimentary romantic Vlog dedicated to none other than Jimin--GCF Tokyo. 

Jungkook has never featured another member in his GCF’s the way in which he did and continued to do for Jimin. Even when it was suggested that he make one with Tae JK refused and kept making and featuring Jimin. With this Birthday gift Jungkook debunked every rumor that he was dating anyone other than Jimin. 

Some people like to play the “friends do this for friends” card and that earns them the biggest eye roll known to man kind because...really? Do friends take friends on vacation? Yes. Do friends create travel vlogs with their friends? Yes! But let’s not pretend that’s all that happened here. JK took Jimin on an all expense paid trip to Tokyo...he legit paid for everything--airfare, lodging, food, shopping and excursions--he later talked about how broke he was after that trip. He then documented that trip but for “some reason” forgot to include himself in that documentation. He made a 4 minute video highlighting just Jimin’s experience, zooming in on his features and made the audio a freaking love song! Don’t play the “it was a friend trip” card because there isn’t a person alive that if gifted with that trip and that vlog wouldn’t see it as romantic. And there isn’t a person alive that wouldn’t break up with/Kill their partner if they did that for their “just friend.” Jungkook debunked every other ship with this gift. Point, blank, period!

Compliments

I want to preface by saying giving people compliments doesn’t in itself mean anything. Friends give and should give each other compliments all the time. However, there is a boundary. Calling your friend “sexy” is a lot different than calling your friend “handsome.” This is especially true when you are in a relationship. Even in a relationship I am allowed to say people are handsome...but if I were to call my “just friend” sexy...that would hold a whole new meaning and I’d be in hot water. Handsome is just a general observation of attractiveness. Sexy implies desire! It’s saying you evoke sensuality and often times make “me” horny! 

Jungkook calls Jimin sexy...A LOT! And he Uwus over how cute Jimin is All the time. Not to mention he does it right in front of everyone’s salad. . . 

With the amount of times JK calls JM sexy and cute in front of members there’s no way he’s dating anyone else in BTS or in the world other than JM. It would be very cruel for JK to be dating Tae but constantly call Jimin Sexy in front of him.

Some might say he’s just being funny when he says it...it’s very clear that many times JK is more than joking...he gets choked up. Also...he is constantly calling Jimin cute. He thinks everything about Jimin is cute...even his toes.

  When JK was asked what his favorite part of members was JK  responded with a picture of Suga’s wrist, Jin’s finger, Tae’s ear, RM’s hand, J-Hope’s eye, and drum roll please. . . . . JM’s entire body. 

Now again this alone doesn’t debunk JK dating someone outside of BTS. I can imagine someone making an argument that this only proves JK is closest with JM. Now while this argument is weak it’s at the very least logical. An illogical argument would be that in light of this, JK is dating Tae (or any other member of BTS that isn’t JM). This is illogical because why would JK say he likes all of Jimin but only a part of his supposed boyfriend Tae? 

With this post JK completely destroyed the notion that taekook is real. He also destroyed the notion that he’s dating anyone other than JM!

Clinginess

There’s a reason satellite Jeon became JK’s honorary name. There’s also a reason why JM constantly jokes that JK is always copying him. When you are with someone all the time you start to adopt their habits...it’s natural and can’t be helped. 

Jungkook is always with Jimin. A Staff member even said “he never saw Jimin and Jungkook separated backstage.” Jimin has said “Jungkookie and I tend to stick together so often.” And JK said, “All the time, it’s just the two of us doing something at night.

I mean they are together so much that even members confuse their rooms.

The first pic Tae thinks JM’s room is JK’s (this in itself should prove Taekook aren’t a couple...the boy doesn’t even know where his apparent boyfriends room is lol). The last two pics you have Vmin choosing to share a room together and Hobi by impulse saying JM and JK will take this room. It was his knee jerk response because it’s what’s common.

Just the sheer amount of time Jikook spend together at odd hours disproves every other ship...because why wouldn’t JK be spending that time with his significant other...why would he choose to spend that time with JM ? What girl friend wouldn’t feel insecure about this?

Skinship

Last but certainly not least...SKINSHIP. I know I know...Jungkook doesn’t only engage in skinship with JM. He does it with Jin, Hobi, and Tae also. The difference is the way in which JK allows JM to touch him and the way in which he only touches JM. 

JK will hug, sit on other members laps, and even somewhat cuddle with other members. I say somewhat because typically he’s on the receiving end or not even aware (I.e. asleep). The only times he has been aware and has actively chosen to cuddle is typically with JM and sometimes Hobi also. All in All...Jungkook consistently debunk Taekook, or any other ship he’s included in. Sometimes (More recently it seems) it’s intentional...most of the time it’s just him engaging with his partner how partners engage...exclusively.

There was a weird audio edit, in that scene with Jungkook slapping Jimin's rear-end.

In the scene, we see what Jungkook is doing. We see what Jimin is doing. There's a moment where they look to be laying still (background music playing), and then we hear that "slap" sound again. All while JK and JM are not moving.

Seems like the editors kinda messed up. Like they cut out the visual and forgot to edit out that extra "slap" sound.

Makes you wonder..... right?

Over 1,000 radio plays have been returned to the BBC Archives by the Radio Circle, a group of radio enthusiasts and collectors, made up of reels and home recordings sent in by members of the public. BBC Radio 4, 4 Extra and Radio 3 will celebrate their return to the Archive with a season of special broadcasts of the recordings, including Macbeth, which when it was first broadcast in 1971 was the first ever stereo production of the play. The season also includes adaptations of works by Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Edgar Wallace, Kingsley Amis and JM Barrie. Radio 4 will also celebrate the BBC Archives by broadcasting two plays by giants of twentieth-century literature, Harold Pinter and Dennis Potter, which have not been heard on BBC Radio since their original broadcasts in the early 1980s.

The collection of plays has been gathered by the Radio Circle, who have identified and restored recordings belonging to members of the public. Most recordings in the collection are of programmes which were not already held by the BBC Archives, making this a particularly special discovery.

The BBC Archives have evolved significantly over the course of the BBC’s history. In its early days, there were significant obstacles to keeping permanent recordings – including cost, copyright issues, and a culture that saw radio as a ‘live’ medium – but much progress has been made. The BBC now archives all output from its network stations, and the Archive currently spans multiple collections. The focus is now on bringing these collections together into one unified back catalogue, and the discovery of these additional recordings by the Radio Circle is an excellent addition to this resource.

Pinter's writing in The Dumb Waiter combines "the staccato rhythms of music-hall cross-talk and the urban thriller." This production stars Bob Hoskins and Roy Kinnear and is an absolute tour de force.

Followed by a short feature about the Hidden Treasures collection.

Hidden Treasures: Traitor

Western journalists visit Moscow to interview Adrian Harris, a former controller in British Intelligence, who was also a double agent for the Soviets. Harris believes in both Communism and Englishness, believing himself to have betrayed his class, but not his country. The press find these beliefs incompatible and want to find out why he became a ‘traitor’. Harris is plagued by anxieties over both his actions and his childhood history.

Starring Denholm Elliott as Harris and Ian Ogilvy as James. Adapted and directed by Derek Hoddinott.

Written by Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins, adapted by Mollie Hardwick. In 1867 Dickens and Collins collaborated to produce a stage play. Two boys from the Foundling Hospital are given the same name, Walter Wilding, with disastrous consequences. After the death of one in adulthood, executors are commissioned to find a missing heir – leading to danger and treachery.

By Kingsley Amis, dramatised by Frederick Bradnum. A mummy is stolen from a small-town museum along with some Roman coins, and a soaking wet man collapses in fourteen-year-old Peter Furneaux's living room, bleeding from the head. What was a suspected student prank is followed by murder.

What Every Woman Knows

By JM Barrie, adapted for radio by Stewart Conn, with Phyllis Logan and David Hayman. A social satire set in England and Scotland during the early 20th century, What Every Woman Knows centres around plain, spinsterish Maggie Wylie and John Shand, an ambitious young student, who promises to marry Maggie after five years if she agrees and if her family pays for his education. Written before suffrage, the play posits that "every woman knows she is the invisible power responsible for the successes of the men in her life”.

Drama on 3: The Tragedy of Macbeth

20:00 – 22:25 (original TX 1971)

When it was originally broadcast in 1971 on BBC Radio 3, this was the first ever stereo production of Shakespeare’s Scottish play. Radio 3’s predecessor the Third Programme had been the pioneer of stereo on BBC Radio in the early 1960s while other BBC stations did not go stereo till two years after this production in 1973.

Macbeth is played by the TV and film actor Joss Ackland, who died less than four months ago at the end of 2023 aged 96. Lady Macbeth is played by the veteran star of British film and TV Googie Withers, and Robert Hardy, subsequently famous for his role in TV’s All Creatures Great and Small, plays MacDuff.

The production has a specially composed score by Stephen Dodgson and was produced by Raymond Raikes.
