scar re: grian or grian re: scar for the headcanon ask game?? i love how u read the characters

(Did it about their relationship in general, because that seemed easiest! This is specifically for them in HC, though I generally consider 3L/LL as canon to HC for angst purposes.)

Headcanon A:  realistic

They’re both deeply in love with the other, but on the basis they’re both incapable of being emotionally open or direct about their wants with literally anyone, ever, they have no idea. So they just continue to be kind to one another, and bother one another, and poke and prod and joke and flirt and tease and give gifts, in the world’s most elaborate and extended courtship display.

(Which - especially on a server where a lot of very smart, creative people being relatively isolated with their passion projects makes for some very Atypical approaches to relationships - is just fucking wild. Mostly people get crushes, have their brief affairs, and then get over them; or else frienship gradually, naturally morphs into something more. The idea of two people being so deeply interested in each other and then proceeding to do nothing about it for three worlds is just fucking insane by literally everyone else’s standards.)

Literally everyone else on the server beside Scar and Grian is aware of the mutual pining. The rest of the server has popcorn. The rest of the server has a betting pool.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

They have actually been married for A While, now, but they were pining so hard beforehand and were so quiet and casual about it afterwards (because they’re both intensely private people, emotions-wise) that no one has noticed. Grian finds out about this when someone new to the server (Pearl?) very gently suggests that Scar might, perhaps, have a crush on him? And Mumbo hurriedly shushes her because they’ll get to that when they’re ready, Pearl, don’t push them, they need time.

At which point Grian immediately makes his excuses, finds Scar, and goes, “Scar. We have the opportunity to pull off the funniest long con that anyone has ever pulled on the server.” And Scar, without asking for any clarification, immediately goes, “I’m in,” and Grian is reminded of exactly why he married this man in the first place. (Yes, Mumbo is furious when the con is eventually up. Grian is crying with laughter. Grian gets punted off somewhere tall by Mumbo, and is laughing so hard he can’t actually get his wings out before he hits the ground.)

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

3L and LL put a huge wedge between them. They had a... physical relationship during 3L, especially during the last days of it, desperately searching for any kind of comfort they could find; but they never acknowledged it outside the cover of darkness, or put any labels on it, and then all the stuff with the betrayal and the murder happened and- Neither of them wanted to be the one to bring it up back on HC, though both desperately wished the other would. And then LL happened, where they both so carefully and so aggressively kept their distance, Scar especially - and Grian, hair-trigger sensitive to rejection, figured this meant Scar hated him and wanted nothing to do with him and has stayed the hell away from him emotionally speaking now they’re back in HC. And it’s fucking Scar up, because he already struggles with loneliness, and it hurt him so bad to keep away from Grian in LL, but he clearly didn’t want a repeat of 3L and Scar was trying so hard to respect his wishes, and-

It’s a mess. A horrible, ridiculous, stupid, fucked-up mess that would be solved in minutes if they were both just honest with one another. They are not. Easier to stay apart, and pine, and resent, and stare up at the ever-growing moon, and drink themselves to sleep on opposite sides of Boatem.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

Less “unrealistic”, and more “unsupported by canon per se”, but:

They both have very service/gift-oriented love languages. Grian puts blocks of copper in Scar’s chests when he’s not looking; tucks a flower behind his ear “as a joke” before he takes off; just “happens to be around” when Scar’s struggling with a particularly thorny bit of build design. Scar cooks Grian a dinner as “a thank you”, never really saying what for; gives him shiny rocks (though maybe not diamonds, lmao) for his greedy little magpie-hoard; helps Grian with his preening, because “someone’s got to do it, and it’s clearly not going to be you”, ignoring the intimacy of the gesture. Just, lots of small accommodations, and presents, casual gifts, food, check-ins, help. Every one of them meaning I love you; not one of them acknowledged, but always returned in kind.
