God, what the hell was she doing?

She fled from the lilac silk dress that was stinging her and Emily's romantic speeches, barely waiting to go back to the dressing room and start a call with Cleo, who didn't stop talking for a second.  Still in her bra and panties, she looked for her lighter to try to light a damn cigarette, but she couldn't find it in the middle of that mess. Fuck, she really needed a smoke.

"Fuck this!" she threw her purse on the couch.

"Kiara, are you listening to me?"  Cleo squeaked and Kiara balanced the phone against her shoulder and her face.

"No, Cleo, I'm kinda busy here."

"Sorry if I'm trying to be a good friend and help you think of some plan to crash your best friend's wedding, since you don't have any," she snapped wryly.

"Don't say 'crash my best friend's wedding', I feel like a movie villain like that."

"Well, I don't see what else to call it, Kie"

Well...

"I'm saving him from a terrible idea" she tried and heard Cleo chuckle on the other end.

"Yes, saving him to be with you" she pointed out.

Ok. Maybe her motives weren't entirely altruistic. But JJ wasn't thinking straight. Clearly. Marrying a kook he'd known for a year?  That didn't sound like him, that didn't sound like her Jayj.  But it was real and it was happening.

"Emily looks like a doll, Cleo! So dreamy and-" A brief knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. Thinking it was the seamstress, Kiara urged her to come in, while she waited for her friend's answer.

"Calm down, girl…"

But it wasn't the seamstress. It was JJ. Clutching a bridesmaid dress in his arms, he seemed more surprised by her startled yell than by her lack of clothes. He chuckled as she tried futilely to cover herself with her arms. "Hi" she said uselessly.

"Do you want me to turn around or something?"  his smile widened as he leaned back in the doorway, his damn dimples showing as he looked way too comfortable with the situation.

Kiara searched for anything she could cover herself with, clumsily clinging to her coat and wrapping it around her body.

"You weren't the person I was expecting..."

He shrugged and twirled the end of the hanger in great amusement.

"I've seen you a lot more naked than that."

Kiara bit her lip, not at all surprised by the insinuation, resisting the urge to flirt. It was hard when he looked the same JJ as ever, who she knew would flirt back.

"Well… things are different now."

He nodded briefly and, for a moment, neither of them knew what to say.  Maybe she killed the moment, reminding him that they weren't as young, passionate, and free as they used to be.  A lot had changed.

"Yeah, I think they are."

He turned the end of the hanger again before placing her dress gently on the chair that stood there.  He looked nervous, the way he did when he tried to hide it, and there was a small satisfaction when Kiara realized that she could still read him well.  He backed to the door, and before leaving he gave her one of those mischievous smiles that told her everything was going to be okay.  JJ looked her up and down, not ashamed to drink in the sight of her half-naked body before leaving:

"You look really good... without your clothes on."

The door had barely closed before Kiara fell unceremoniously onto the couch, her legs too shaky to stand.  The intensity of his gaze, the familiarity with which he changed the energy of the room with a smile, or even his stupid bright blue eyes were too much for her.

A glimmer of hope began to glow deep inside her chest, and Kiara blindly reached for her phone lying on the couch, and by some miracle Cleo was still on the call.

"KIARA!"

"Cleo… I'm back in the game"

I think Jack was cast as a toddler (was he played by twins? I think he was idk) but YES I was just thinking the other day how immaculate the casting was. Especially when he’s like 10/11 years old at the end of his run on cm, MAN. That was well done.

And yeah, the casting for Jack was just *chef's kiss* I was seeing some pictures of Hotch from the Mr. Scratch saga and came across this particular one that made my brain all akskdjjdjd

I was like 'yo, I've seen that face before, where have I seen that face before?' and it was actually JACK!

(kudos to the CM casting director 'cause I imagine it's extremely hard to cast kids with the intention of watching them grow up as the story progresses, our faces change a lot as we get older and there's no way to tell if the kid you cast having certain features yesterday is gonna look the same when you're shooting the next season)

I notice in your translation of Lucile’s diary, on 9th June 92 she says “He's gone! If they would have ripped my soul out, they wouldn't have hurt me any more. What a wound has come to my heart!“ Is she referring to Horace here? I assumed so from the context (unless it was Camille) - and if so is she referring to the baby being taken to the wet nurse? I wondered why she would choose not to breastfeed it herself given the distress. Was it to do with the dangerous situation in Paris or Lucile being unwell (as she mentions?). I know you don’t have definite answers to all this but given you are a wizard I wanted your opinion! (The joys of trying to decipher the girl’s incredible crypticness for a novel .)

Yes, I think it is rather obvious it’s Horace being sent to a wet nurse Lucile is referring to in this diary entry. It’s also confirmed by a letter Camille wrote to his father three days later: ”I named [my son] Horace-Camille Desmoulins. He was immediately sent to a wet nurse in l'Ile-Adam (Seine-et-Oise) with the little Danton.”

As for why Lucile didn’t breastfeed Horace herself, I agree it can come off as a little strange given that mothers breastfeeding their own children was the new hot stuff. We know that both the Brissot, Roland and Lebas couple went through with it (in the latter case, Philippe even seems to have had the topic of breastfeeding your own child be some kind of ”ultimatum” to see if Élisabeth would be a suitable wife for him). We also know that Horace was one of the very first children to have a republican baptism instead of a religious one, a clear indicator his parents were open to other new ideas regarding babies. Camille does however not appear to have been as huge of a Rousseau stan as some other revolutionaries (in number 55 (December 1790) of Révolutions de France et de Brabant, he does for example write that he no longer idolizes Rousseau ”since he became an aristocrat in his old days,” and even tossed Confessions away in rage, ”in order to not hate the philosopher from Geneva”), the philosopher largely being the one who had advertised for mothers breatfeeding their own children. Also, according to Mette Harder’s Life in Revolutionary France (2020) — ”In practise, it seems that only a minority of parents followed this advice, given the prevalence of wet-nursing in France, particulary in larger cities.”

Finally, my only other speculation here is that since Horace, as shown by Camille’s letter, was sent to the same wet nurse as Danton’s youngest son, maybe it was Georges and Gabrielle who told Lucile and Camille: ”our wet nurse is great, you should send your child there too.” Then it’s also true Paris, like you say, wasn’t exactly the safest and healthiest place for an infant (or anyone!) in the summer of 1792, so it would make sense to want your child out of there for a while. But Lucile of course had a country house to run off to (which, as seen through the diary, she actually did shortly after Horace was sent away) and where we might imagiene she could have easily brought her son as well, so I don’t know if that explanation alone is sufficient enough.

See I'm kinda torn about it cuz on one hand I think Emily would be perfectly happy just going down to the court house just the 2 of them and keeping it all very casual and the like but JJ would almost insist on the whole "Big White Wedding" thing because "Damnit Emily we owe it to our family to give them at least one happy memory!"

But anyways they finally compromise and settle on a beach wedding, JJ would be in a Grecian style dress but it would be a pale blue not white, with her hair in soft ringlets down her back. Penelope would 100% be her Person of Honour and Spencer, Alex and Kate would be her Bridespeople (they both insisted on gender neutral terms)

Emily on the other hand would be in a dark blue pants suit, she'd leave her hair down too but only curled at the ends. Tara and Morgan would be her best people. Rossi would stand in as Father of the Bride and walk her down the aisle.

Both of them would walk down the aisle and Emily would definitely cry first! They'd combine last names and become Jareau-Prentiss.

They'd spend a long time debating where to go on their honeymoon but they finally settled on going to Paris as it was where they first realised that they were truly in love with each other and they were determined to make happy memories there.
