Just wanna point out how different Jiu looks from Insight 1 (main story and her character story before then) to her form at the end of the main story (Insight 2).

Her Insight 1 outfit is the clothing she got from her guardian Ms Xu. It’s not only a symbol of her humanity but her ties to the world as well, and something a Xiangrui shouldn’t have. Even down to her embroidered bag with poetry on it about her, it's something she doesn't quite understand despite being a direct part of it. The bag is FOR her and about her, but she can't read it. Being literate is one of the most important things when it comes to interacting with society and a part of education. She wants to know about Xiangrui's, but she already is one. She can't learn about other people like her because she can't read, she has no access to knowledge apart from stories that are retold a hundred times and changed even more. Every connection to her mother and why she fell from the heavens for Jiu are things that she can only learn from other people, but at the same time she doesn't know what she's looking for because her world view isn't big enough to know where to look. Much like the way she memorizes the poems on her bag without directly being able to read them, she's going with the motions in an attempt to understand humans in the way she has from the start.

"A Xiangrui is not supposed to have any personal feelings. She fell because of you, because of the personal feeling. Remember that."

Then her Insight 2 outfit is very clearly an arcanist in all senses of the word. Even by the standards of Pei City which accepts arcanists as simply another kind of person, Jiu then appears clearly nonhuman in the same way Getian does. Her character story CG shows the way no one looks to her as a Xiangrui as she looks to the narration (player/camera). Jiu has let go of her personal feelings and attachment to acting as a normal arcanist in her last attempt to fulfill her duties as a Xiangrui and reverse the curse, but in return she's lost the things that made her happy with humans. Things that she already had as a Xiangrui who granted the wishes of the people in town. One of the cruelest parts yet is that Xiangrui's are likely like Meimengs where they can't grant wishes but simply have the knowledge and strength to help others.

Reverse 1999 Lore: Translator

Vertin uses an object with an arcane skill that let's her speak the language of her guest and the guest can also speak her's. This explains why she can understand her team when they speak in their native tongue (e.g. An An Lee).

In other words, she could very well be speaking Russian, German, Chinese etc. to her allies due to the skill but to her (as in the players) she's still speaking English.

i really quite like the relationship between vertin & argus

it's nice seeing vertin interact with someone who she doesn't feel the need to be the timekeeper for or knew when she was younger, and it's nice seeing how argus slowly goes from bossing her around to following her command thru trust

i love the parental relationships vertin has with many of adults but it is nice seeing one where it doesn't have that type of dependency

On THAT NOTE it was so interesting in the half anniversary event how there’s so many parallels between Jiu Niangzi and Getian despite being extremely different characters

Jiu is young and new to the world she was basically out there without any guidance before Ms. Xu then after she was even more alone. She was pretty old all things considered she was already past toddler age when she had to be taught how to be a person and the only instruction she was given by the one person who knew what she was and the circumstances behind birth was to help others and it’ll tell her why her mother had her.

Then Getian is considerably old as a Miemeng but he grew up under the care of the other people of his tribe after they migrated to the mountains around Pei City. He was cared for growing up and sheltered but he held a lot of apathy and disinterest in other people like his kin. One of the scenes when he’s reminiscing is with him talking with one of if not the only person left on the mountain saying he may be the only one left to gather all their kin. Getian fundamentally just didn’t want or care about giving people advice or helping others like how Jiu did. After all of his kin were gone he had learnt all of the skills they kept with them and brought with them through life and past death.

Jiu’s storyline is struggling between being a human and a Xiangrui because with Ms. Xu she found the reasons behind her mother leaving her realm to be with humans without realizing it. Even her notable items include tokens from other people of Pei City. She values items and artifacts from the people around her and worldly things and even after the story when she’s with the Timekeeper her lines talk about how she doesn’t realize when she became a human she also became the Xiangrui she sought to be.

Also side note on that it’s SO fun that she gets along with Jessica cause she’s a horse and Jessica is a fawn. Jiu also had a similar childhood to her where she had to be taught by others on how to be with others. But it’s a really fun dynamic between them with how they both sought to be someone or something they didn’t realize they already were. Jiu has always been a Xiangrui and Jessica has always been someone interesting and fun to be around.

The thing I love about them both is that though they’re pretty humanoid all of their actions and words reveal that they’re far from it. Sure there’s a ton of kinds of people besides arcanists, like Ezra’s our first human, Spathodea is a reincarnator, we have awakeneds ands spirits, even a dog. But Getian and Jiu really radiate an otherworldly vibe to them from a mix of the culture shown in R99’s Eastern Regions and their upbringing being very detached from others with Getian being physically away from others and Jiu always having it in the back of her mind that she CANT be human but it really mixes together to make a very interesting and different vibe to them. In UTTU during both of their interviews they each have different insights on it and how they express it but like a lot of people in Pei City they simply don’t see arcanists and humans as any different from each other. They’re both people with different skill sets but nonetheless we all breathe the same air. It was such a fun event cause it really showed something new we haven’t gotten much of at all in the game so far and that’s Reverse 1999’s OWN culture. They show so many cultures so well around the world and so wonderfully but the only events I can really think of that dive into how their world works is Jessica’s [The Old One Flew Over The House] for how arcanists get registered in perpetual 1999 or 2007, Notes from Shuori, and the Uluru Games with how sports culture works.
