I'm just gonna let out some Adrien salt here that I've been thinking about a lot. Because I've been rewatching Miraculous Ladybug and... Sweet Jesus.

Now, Adrien Agreste is a very sheltered boy who has obviously been groomed by his asshole of a father to never cause trouble, to always be obedient, ect. I don't think he's ever had any real outside interaction, save for Chloé, who herself is a piece of shit, obviously only really cares about him because of how famous he is, ect.

Don't fight me on this, we all know Chloé wouldn't give two shots about Adrien if he wasn't a famous, handsome model and his father wasn't rich.

Adrien is a sheltered boy, but he's too fucking pacifist. Sure, he steps up when he realizes that Lila was actually hurting Marinette with her lies, but he should have stepped up in the fucking first place.

And as Chat Noir, I just get angry. I like the idea of a flirty partner, or being the lovable goofball. But only when that flirting with fucking wanted. How many times has Ladybug said no, acted uncomfortable, had to save his sorry ass? He threw a FUCKING TANTRUM WHILE PARIS WAS FUCKING UNDERWATER, because the poor fucking baby couldn't handle a few things being kept from him. Holy fuck, boi. Or the tantrum when Ladybug stated she already had plans, so she couldn't go on a date with him. And he knows this, but fucking pouts and whines.

I can think of headcanons of where a lot of this 'we're meant to be together' bullshit came from. Of why he won't take no for a fucking answer. Maybe his mother read him a lot of those stories, where the prince or knight saves the princess and they live happily ever after, because they were meant to be. Or maybe she sprouted the notions of soulmates, ect. He probably didn't out Lila because he probably tried to do that before, maybe in his work as a model, and his father came back and punished him for causing all of the trouble that caused.

Now I'm not hating on the Love Square shippers. You guys wrote such wholesome content, it makes me smile.

But, to me, it seems like Chat Noir thinks he's owed Ladybug. And he fucking gaslit Marinette that one time she threw a party because Chloé, the fucking worst person on existence, was leaving. “At Joe Biden’s town hall meeting on Thursday, Cedrick Humphrey, a young Black man from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, asked a question central to some of the most recent misinformation tactics at play in the election.

“Many people believe that the true swing demographic in this election will be Black voters under the age of 30, not because they’ll be voting for Trump, but because they won’t vote at all,” he said, adding that he shared this sentiment. “What do you have to say to young Black voters who see voting for you as further participation in a system that continuously fails to protect them?”

Biden answered by pointing to the importance of voting, and to the need to give Black Americans the means to amass wealth and improve access to education.

The question Humphrey posed to the former vice president and the Democratic presidential nominee is part of a broader trend unfolding in the final days before the election. Among all of the social media disinformation campaigns that have preyed on voters in the run-up to Nov. 3, one domestic-originated tactic has become particularly troubling. Some Black social media influencers as well as Black community groups on Facebook who are more progressive than Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, are targeting Black voters less by deceiving them and more by what experts describe as voter depression.

Voter depression isn’t about giving voters the wrong information that would keep them from making it to the polls, like discrediting mail-in ballots by disparaging the postal service.

Rather, with voter depression, the goal is to make people who would otherwise vote feel that there’s no reason to do so, stoking inaction and apathy.

This approach has been a particular challenge for the Biden campaign, while the same voter depression tactics aren’t being used as much on Republican voters, said Jacquelyn Mason, a senior investigative researcher at First Draft, a nonprofit that provides research and training for journalists.

“The absence of enthusiasm around a candidate can really contribute to interference in the form of voter depression,” Mason said. She added that since many progressive Black voters might not be excited about voting for Biden, it raises questions about what the point is of voting at all.

Memes and Micro-influencers

Earlier this month, an Instagram account with over 19,000 followers posted a video of a young Black man asking a series of questions: “Can we vote out systemic racism? Can we vote out police violence?,” before answering, “The obvious answer is no.”

“Don’t vote,” he concludes.

That video is one of thousands of posts in an increasingly popular genre of social media content aimed at discouraging Black people from casting their ballots this election cycle. One of the most prominent examples of voter depression has been the attacks on Harris and her prosecutorial record during her tenure as the district attorney of San Francisco and later the attorney general of California.

In one meme that went viral this month, a mosaic of people’s faces together formed a portrait of her. The meme received some of its most popular shares from accounts of Black conservative social media influencers. The mosaic claims to be a composite image made up of “all the black men she locked up and kept in prison past their release date for jail labor.” It's been shared over 23,000 times on Facebook with no warning next to it that indicates that the image isn’t actually what it claims to be: A closer look reveals the mosaic actually repeats the same faces over and over again.

These tactics started cropping up before the 2016 election with a clip that went viral of Hiliary Clinton where in a speech she referred to Black youth as “superpredators.” During that election, Russian operatives also ran thousands of fake social media accounts in the run-up targeting Black social media users on Facebook with ads based on their interest in “Martin Luther King Jr.,” “Black is beautiful” and the “African American Civil Rights Movement (1954-68).”

Many of those tactics have extended to the current election season. Just this month, Twitter banned a network of more than two dozen accounts of users pretending to be Black Trump supporters, but were in reality profiles created using stock images of Black people or images of Black people lifted from news stories and recycled to give a veneer of authenticity behind the fake accounts proclaiming allegiance to Trump. These accounts amassed hundreds of thousands of retweets and followers before Twitter removed them. While these examples aren’t explicitly voter depression tactics, they are part of a larger disinformation ecosystem that has focused on using Black identity as a way of manipulating the election.

But this election, many of the voter depression memes and posts circulating on social media aimed at dissuading Black people from voting in 2020 are not based on entirely false information.

What makes voter depression narratives so appealing and difficult to dislodge is that there can be “a grain of truth to them,” Mason said.

Voter depression targeting Black communities online are picking up momentum because, according to researchers, they’re coming from accounts people already have relationships with and appear to be authentic.

“Some of the tactics we worry a lot about and are seeing more of are from micro-influencers, like on Instagram Live,” said Jiore Craig, a vice president at GQR, a Democratic research firm, who advises campaigns on disinformation.

Micro-influencers engaged in voter depression may have as low as 10 to 30,000 followers and often speak to them directly to the camera, denigrating the value of voting.

“They are speaking to issues that present pathways to take what either candidate is saying about the voting process and saying instead, ‘Isn’t this just kind of BS?’ Planting the question is a part of the strategy,” Craig said.

“It’s a communication strategy, chipping away at what appears to be a preconceived belief. The name of the game in so many ways is about erosion of trust,” Craig said.

The end goal is to get their audience to then pose questions about the value of voting to their family or friend group––turning their audience into messengers and making the concept more legitimate.

Rebuilding Trust

Some Black advocacy groups are working to undo voter depression efforts with similar tactics, focusing on sharing relatable information from individuals voters trust.

One group leading this work is the political action committee run by the online racial justice organization Color of Change, which has for years conducted advocacy campaigns aimed at large social media platforms, like Facebook, where disinformation and hate speech flourish. This year the group is also working to engage Black voters who are most likely to be targeted by voter depression efforts, in part through a grassroots volunteer program where members are reaching out to friends and family to encourage them to plan their vote.

One of the ways the group is creating a narrative about the importance of voting is by talking about more local races in person and on social media, like district attorney seats, which are also on the ballot in many communities across the country.

“While many, especially irregular Black voters or voters who might be prone to not turn out to vote, might not see the importance of electing a president and the impact on their lives, we are having a conversation with them about the daily decisions that prosecutors make that are causing harm in black communities,” said Arisha Hatch, the vice president and chief of campaigns at Color of Change. “And when we engage in that conversation their mentality begins to shift.”

Greater accountability

In the past six months, Color of Change has been in multiple closed-door meetings with social media companies, like Facebook, Google and Twitter, to talk about what the companies need to do to ensure that their platforms aren’t being used to disenfranchise Black voters ahead of the 2020 election.

While those conversations have been useful––Facebook has promised to expand the definition of content it prohibits because it engages in voter suppression––Color of Change is calling for the company to enforce its policy changes consistently and transparently. NBC News reported in August that Facebook has given special exception to its rules against misinformation on conservative pages.

“The tech companies have a real responsibility in correcting some of the shifts we’re seeing about how information moves,” Hatch said. “That is not only influencing public policy but influencing a more polarized culture that just leads to more gridlock and more working-class people being left out of the American dream.”

9. Kakumeike Valvrave

“Jiro for the love of all things good if you roll a nat twenty on this-” Ryou, from behind his hologram screen, glared at the doofy white haired clone he called a younger brother.

“You’re gonna jinx it.” Shiro smirked as they saw the youngest of roll his dice.

Leaning over, all three saw the results of the random chance.

“What about a natural nineteen?” Jiro asked innocently.

“YOU-!” Ryou pointed a finger at the youngest with a comical expression of anger. “You get off the hook this time.” He sunk down behind the screen again and fiddled around with things. “Well I’ll be damned a natural one.”

“Yes!” Jiro fist bumped as Shiro laughed.

The door opened and in walked a tired Hunk.

“You guys are still playing Monsters and Mana?” He asked, a cup of steaming hot something in his hand. “It’s like three in the morning.”

“Oh, witching hour.” Ryou wiggled his fingers around and made a sound effect for them. “Explains all your high rolls tonight.”

“We’re gonna get creamed in combat,” Shiro shook his head.

“Well I’m going back to bed, you guys good?” Hunk asked, his eyes nearly closed.

“Hup hup.” Ryou raised a hand.

“I can watch them.” Shiro smiled, though he saw a look on Jiro’s face.

“Jiro?” Hunk asked again.

“I’m fine. I got my two bros here right?” Jiro had a crooked and tense smile.

Hunk definitely noticed and blinked. “Have fun.” And he walked back out.

As soon as the door closed again, Ryou and Shiro huddled around the youngest of the three.

“You okay lil’ bro?” Ryou asked softly.

“Need anything? A hug? Some quiet time?” Shiro also asked.

“N-no.” Jiro shook his head. “I’m fine.I’m okay. Just-” Jiro wiped his hands down his face. “Witch.”

Ryou’s eyes widened. “Jiro I’m sorry-I was-I-”

“I know,” Jiro assured him. “You didn’t mean to. I just-” he took a shaking breath. “I just need a minute.”

“Take as long as you need,” Shiro patted the youngest’s shoulder.

Jiro squeezed his eyes shut and took some deep breaths. He opened them and looked at the little figurines on the table. “Why me?”

Shiro and Ryou looked at each other.

“What?” Ryou asked.

“Why me?” Jiro repeated. “Out of all the clones Haggar made and had, why was I the one that made it out? Why me?”

Ryou gave Shiro a look. Shiro returned the look. A silent discussion was quickly made and Shiro finally caved in.

“That’s not exactly easy to answer Jiro,” Shiro sighed. “On one hand, you were just lucky. On the other,” Shiro looked down. “Well, it’s easier to think it was just luck.”

“But we’re were all made to be you,” Jiro ran his hand through his hair. “All of us were made to take your place!”

“Jiro,” Ryou’s voice was soft. “There’s only one of you.”

“And I must admit, besides the whole evil brainwashing thing, you had quite the moves out there on the Black Lion.” Shiro smiled a little, patting Jiro’s back.

That earned a laugh from Jiro. “I guess. I was using your memories after all.”

“And now they’re your memories.” Shiro ruffled Jiro’s hair. “And Haggar can��t hurt you anymore.”

Jiro smiled and let out a relieved sigh. “Thanks.”

They looked back down at the figurines.

“Do you think they felt anything?” Jiro asked as his smile fell, looking at the collection of identical enemy goblins.

“When they fell?” Ryou asked, already knowing what he meant.

“Yeah.” Jiro looked at his figure. “It didn’t look like they were awake.”

“We’ll go check it out,” Shiro suggested. “When you feel up to it.”

Jiro looked back at them, the smile returning, though tired. “Okay.”

Ryou and Shiro both kissed Jiro’s temples.

“So should we finish for tonight?” Jiro asked.

“Depends,” Shiro looked to Ryou. “What does the DM say?”

Ryou put his hands together, tapping his index fingers in thought as he hummed. “I can’t ignore the natural nineteen with that high a modifier. And it would be super funny to see how you play this once you have enough time to prepare for the consequences of this. So let’s finish this scene.” He clapped and smiled.

Shiro scooted back to his seat, and Jiro bounced a little in excitement.

“Alright.” Ryou sighed and leaned back. “I can’t believe I’m going to say this but Jiro the Paladin, through your heroic actions and very convincing speech, and the fact the universe wants to see me suffer right now, you are now crowned the King of the Frog People.”

Jiro smiled. “I promise to be a kind and just leader for my froggy subjects.”

“And Sven the Bard shall sing all your praises,” Shiro flourished his hand.

Ryou sighed and smiled. “And the froggy people are happy to have you. They escort you and Sven to your new palace, setting up an elaborate feast of various insects and snakes.”

“Question,” Jiro raised his hand. “Are these frog people are like actual frogs and do they have a messed up caste system of smaller frogs maintained specifically to be eaten by the bigger ones.”

Ryou grabbed one of the handbooks and gently tapped it to Jiro’s head. “No.”

“Sven will like to sing about King Jiro’s accomplishments and journey thus far,” Shiro added.

“Roll me a performance.” Ryou seemed to accept this was where his story was going and looked over to Jiro. “Does King Jiro have anything to say for the night before Sven makes everyone’s heads explode from his terrible singing?”

Jiro looked both to Shiro and Ryou, smiling.

“No,” he said. “I’d like to just enjoy the moment and process the fact I’m in charge of a whole island civilization now.”

“Internal screaming.” Ryou flashed a joking smile.

“Ahhhhh.” Jiro whispered screamed, laughing.

“Fifteen on my performance, plus my modifier.” Shiro added.

“Well congratulations gentlemen,” Ryou clapped again. “As the night continues, your ballad of King Jiro ends and the frogs rejoice, you are led to your new rooms, accompanied by ribbiting froggy attendants. The beds are giant soft lilypads that rest on small pools of clear shimmering water. There are small glowing mushrooms around the room, providing some nice soft light. Unless you two have anything else to do, you both enjoy a well earned long rest. And that is where we’ll end the session.”

“Woo!” Shiro hooted and stretched, collapsing and leaning back into the couch. “That was intense, Ryou.”

“You just love eldritch abominations don’t you?” Jiro asked.

“Maybe,” Ryou winked. “Three thirty. Wanna just sleep here?”

Shiro yawned. “Yeah.”

“Good.” Ryou leaned onto Shiro’s left shoulder, hugging with one arm. “You’re an awesome pillow.”

Jiro took up the right side of Shiro and laid across his brothers’ laps with a content yawn. “I agree.”

Shiro laughed and yawned again. “Alright alright. G'night guys.”

“Night.” Ryou raised a hand, resting it on Jiro’s head.

“Good night.” Jiro responded, listening to his brothers’ light and easy breaths. He looked at his figurine on the table, smiling at the little crown Ryou fashioned with a little gold wire. “Good night, King Jiro” He spoke softly to it, closing his eyes and letting the warmth around him lull him to sleep.
