SEOUL LANTERN FESTIVAL
And the Samurai Invasion of Korea
Behind the colorful festival lies a history about the Samurai invasion of Korea in the 1590s, by Toyomoti Hideyoshi whose grand ambitions were to not only capture Korea but China as well.
The 1592 invasion of Korea was the first step in his audacious strategy but it did not go according to plan. They retreated in 1594 after their failed attempt but Hideyoshi ordered a second assault in 1597. It’s only when Hideyoshi died in 1598 that the invasion ended as the Samurais retreated back to the homeland.
During these invasions, the Koreans stringed up lantern along the rivers leading to the cities and towns to illuminate the waterways to detect any Samurai movements under the cover of darkness.
This creative strategy was particularly successful at Jinju’s Jinjuseong Fortress. At the lantern festival in Jinju, people write wishes on paper, fold it up in a lantern and then set that lantern free down the city’s Namgang River.
There is also a ceremonial lighting of lanterns next to the fortress to commemorate the fallen Korean soldies during the infamous battle of 1593. It was one of the inspirations for both the Seoul Lantern Festival and the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Lantern Festival which takes place in early October.
There’s another lantern festival in late April, coinciding with the birth date of the Buddha, called “Lotus Lantern Festival” which involves lantern displays along Cheonggyecheon stream.
The lanterns include the life sized lanterns of Joseon Dynasty leaders, depictions of Korean mythological creatures such as dragons and wing horses, called Chollima. And also Buddhist monks, ancient warriors and farmers.

Travel to JINJU 慧秀晉州行 (ENG SUB/中文) Jinju is located at the South of Korea in Gyeongnam. And along with its river, Jinju is one of the most beautiful and iconic cities in Korea. It has a breathtaking scenic view with many tourist attractions such as Jinjuseong Fortress, Chokseongnu Pavilion, The Jinju National Museum and of course, the Jinyang lake among many others. Today, Hyesoo traveled to the city of Jinju to meet with the Mayor of Jinju and see what the city has to offer… In 1593 when Japan invaded for the second time we call that ‘Bloody battle in Jinju’ that 70 thousand civilian soldier were killed, there was a patriotic civil general named Gyeong heo Choi. Nongae was his concubine. After Jinju was surrendered by Japan, Nongae drown herself with Japanese general at Wae Rock below here. The general was dead and that's why she became famous and in some kind of meaning she could be named as the most honorable woman and first woman to offer one’s life in our 5000 years of history. Day 9, Gyeongju 20th Sept
Another day with an early start. The weather was very pleasant today which was a relief. This is my very interesting travelling group. We have Jo, our Korean guide, who was born in 1961 so has a wealth of stories to tell us about the past and how Korea has changed. He studied law then went into the military for three years then did his Masters in Law at Georgia, USA. When he returned he became a teacher. Our two Lithuanian girls work in the corporate world in Kaunas which is the second largest city in Lithuanian. Funnily enough they met through their love of BTS and this is their second visit to Korea. We can share a lot of common interest about BTS but we have had some interesting conversations about Russia and their part of the world. Our US couple come from Chicago and Rhode Island but now live in LA as they work in the film and TV world creating programs for Netflix etc. Iris is a Korean American but was only a baby when her parents migrated to the US. David is from NZ and is a walker in his spare time having competed in many of the world’s main marathons. He is on his way to Iceland to see his daughter and then heading to Chicago to compete in their marathon. Then you have me with not much of an interesting story to tell.
Tumblr media
Our first stop was Jinjuseong Fortress. The fortress is well known as a sacred place of patriotism and loyalty due to the part it played in the battle of 1592 against the Japanese. General Kim Si-min fought against 20,000 Japanese invaders with only 3,800 soldiers and citizens, achieving a great victory. This was a monument to him.
Tumblr media
Everything is very clean in Korea, including the rivers. There were people dragging weed out of the river down below.
Tumblr media
The Chokseongnu Pavilion is one of the most beautiful pavilions in the region. It has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. It was a command post during war and a place where poets, calligraphers and painters enjoyed the arts during peacetime.
Tumblr media
It is very beautifully decorated.
Tumblr media
There is a black and white photograph showing Australians visiting the pavilion in 1960 among a few photos they have displayed. The fortress had a great view of the river.
Tumblr media
There is a rock called Uiam Rock down below the pavilion and it’s a historic site. The story goes that after the fall of the fortress in 1593 when 70,000 people including civilians, government officials and soldiers died fighting against the Japanese a second time a woman, called Nongae, cast herself from the rock along with the Japanese general embraced tightly within her arms into the Namgang River, drowning them both. He was very drunk at the time and she had lulled him there. In the Japanese military once a general dies the soldiers stop fighting so Nongae was the hero.
Tumblr media
The fortress grounds are parklike and all around were colourful models of how people would have lived during this time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A parade of the elite.
Tumblr media
Within the fortress grounds is also the Jinju National Museum. Again everything was very well presented with videos and explanations in English. Leather was used as armour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weapons used. One of the reasons given why Japan fought the Koreans was they wanted their land and riches obviously but also very simply there were a lot of well trained Samurai in Japan and they needed something to do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always find the written scrolls and journals fascinating to think they have survived all these years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the museum there were some ladies doing tea ceremonies. They insisted we join them as visitors to their country. It was provided by the Mayor. It was a bit rushed as we were on a schedule, which was a pity, but the lady took some photos to show the Mayor. Our legs are all a bit to long to sit comfortably. The man also sang a song sung during victory ceremonies.
Tumblr media
On the road again heading to Busan. Cities are full of high rise as there is so little flat land to build on. Busan is the second largest city in Korea.
Tumblr media
It was quite amazing driving through looking at the buildings and these photos don’t go close to what the city looks like.
Tumblr media
There are five bridges and they are all amazing. This one had a huge circle to get onto it.
Tumblr media
Busan also has the largest container terminal in the world.
Tumblr media
Some of the apartment blocks are so tall. The city is spread out confined by the mountains behind.
Tumblr media
We all had a ‘Wow’ moment when we came around a corner to go over a bridge and with the sun in the right place the surrounding buildings on the water were just stunning. I don’t think I have even seen a more spectacular city view. Impossible to capture in a photo as the bridge was two level and we were on the bottom.
Tumblr media
Busan is vying for the 2030 World Expo, BTS are the Ambassadors. The city is very unique and in another 8 years will be more so. I was blown away by what we saw and I have been to a lot of cities. Obviously it’s all very new but so impressive in parts.
Tumblr media
We only spent a few hours in Busan but I’m coming back later so it was good just to get a feel for the city. I didn’t remember this but in 2005 the APEC meetings were held in Busan. This building was especially built for the meetings on the edge of a cliff in a beautiful park land location.
Tumblr media
This was the meeting room. You can see the Australian place name.
Tumblr media
I do remember vaguely being aware of this photo. The leaders don the traditional dress of whatever country the meetings are held in. John Howard was Prime Minister in 2005. He is in blue hanbok on the end.
Tumblr media
This mural is made of lacquer work inlaid with mother of pearl and was created by a Korean master craftsman. Everything in the work is symbolic. The artwork was in the entrance of the building.
Tumblr media
The area was absolutely gorgeous. This is looking towards Haeundae Beach a popular part of Busan. The three green towers in the background were not supposed to be built so high as this area is protected. However, the Prime Minister at the time and the local Mayor were involved in the development and allowed it to be built. Both are in gaol now.
Tumblr media
A group photo is always a must for school kids. I’m really looking forward to coming back to Busan after getting a taste of what is here.

Where to Go Korea: Autumn Edition, Lantern Festival
Korea has a lot of festivals. Flower festivals, mud festivals, mask festivals, crab festivals and one that cannot be forgotten is Jinju’s Annual Lantern Festival. One of my Korean friends told me that they have so many festivals because Korea is so small and they all like to party. Hey, I’m not complaining!
For the longest time, I really wanted to go to a Lantern Festival, regardless of if it was in America or Korea. I remember before I left to South Korea a Lantern Festival conveniently came to Colorado right on time to celebrate my 20th birthday. I finally got the chance to cross something off my own personal bucket list, but alas the Lantern festival was postponed due to weather conditions and they weren't able to return until after I had left. However, when I arrived in South Korea, I got wind of the most magnificent lantern festival that would be held in the well kept Jinjuseong Fortress.
Tumblr media
The Jinju Namgang Yudeung Lantern Festival is a 10-day festival that happens every October in the South Gyeongsang Province of South Korea. The festival can be traced back to 1592, during the Jinjuseong battle, where lanterns were used as a military signal to prevent Japanese troops from crossing the Namgang river. The floating lanterns were also used for family members to communicate outside of the Fortress. The tradition of floating lanterns down the Namgang river continued as a tribute to the 70,000 lives of civilians and soldiers lost during the battle and as such, it has transformed into the Jinju Festival we know today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I knew I couldn’t pass this festival up, I convinced my Korean friend to go with me right away (my birthday wish) over our Chuseok holiday before classes would begin. Boy, was I so glad we went! We left Seoul in the afternoon and were in the long-haul for a 3-and-a-half hour long drive down (bless her for willing to drive there and back) to the southern part of Korea.
Tumblr media
When we arrived, it was just starting to get dark around 5pm. As evening fell and the lanterns became more visible and an incredible view panned in front of us for miles. The banks of the river were filled with thousands of unique lanterns of all shapes. Some were animals, some traditional Korean stories where you walked along and it told you of the myths, etc. Everywhere there were women and men dressed in traditional Hanbok and people beating traditional Korean drums and singing in Pansori, a traditional singing style.
Tumblr media
We went to a tent where you could get your own little paper lantern with a candle in it, and write wishes on pieces of paper, and then put the lantern in the river and watch it float downstream. Hundreds of people did this: families, couples, friends, it was scenic to see a river that resembled the night sky as hundreds of tiny lanterns floated away. After we scoped out the fortress and river we were starving and supposedly Jinju is known for its Galbi Jim ( 갈비찜 ). Galbi Jim is braised beef short ribs in a spicy sauce with lots of veggies. The place we went to had the best food, and the staff was amazingly sweet to foreigners. It was a very tiny place with floor seating, which of course as much as I like the idea, my legs are too long and fall asleep too quickly to spend a meal on the ground.
Tumblr media
The grandma working the store was so amazed we came in to eat she flattered us with compliments left and right, and even brought out extra food as “service” a Korean gesture of gratitude so I could know, “the feeling of Jinju”. She made sure to show me how to peel the meat off the bones and if it was too spicy she was on guard with a bottle of peach juice that stops your mouth from burning. If you visit Jinju YOU HAVE TO EAT GALBI JIM! It was so good, the meat was so tender and buttery it was unreal.
The night continued and I was finally able to cross off my bucket list and was left with amazing memories. If you’re in South Korea during October, go to this festival! It's a great way to see how locals celebrate the holiday and be a part of cultural activities. Tickets to the festival are only 3000won or $3.00 and you can drive, take the KTX (bullet train), or a tour bus when booking with external tour packaging sites like Trazy. Trazy’s trip is $66 on the site and the cost of a KTX will probably run you $50. I would say if you don’t book with an English speaking tour package group, do not worry! These festivals have information in English and it’s no hassle to order if you can’t speak Korean.
Tumblr media
So, where will you travel?

'Jinx's Lover' premieres on the 15th
Tumblr media
Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, announced on the 2nd that the drama 'Jinx's Lover', which was filmed in all locations with Jinju as the background, will be broadcast for the first time on the 15th. The drama started in August last year and was filmed for five months, with Jinju Nongae Market as the main stage.
In addition to Jinju Nongae Market, I took pictures of every corner of Jinju City including Jinjuseong Fortress, Munsan Cathedral, Namgaram Park, and Jinju National Museum.
During the filming period, about 80 people including actors used the market and nearby restaurants, and props needed for filming also used local businesses, thereby contributing to the local economy during difficult times due to COVID-19.
It also became a place of opportunity for local actors and aspiring actors, with actors from Jinju and assistant actors residing in Jinju City appearing.
The city plans to provide information about the filming location of the drama to Jinju citizens as well as tourists visiting Jinju by installing banners to guide the drama filming locations in various places where the drama was filmed.
The KBS 2TV drama 'Jinx's Lover', which is organized into 16 episodes, is scheduled to air for 8 weeks, starting with the first broadcast at 9:50 pm on the 15th.
Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, Jinx's Lover is a fantasy romance drama about a human man who lives in obedience to his unhappy life and a goddess who jumps out of the unknown to break the curse.

4. Jinju Lantern Festival
Tumblr media
“The lamps wishing for the world peace and mankind fortune are lit in Jinju Namgang, a river of history. It is called 2017 Jinju Namgang lantern festival. The party of lamp that gathered our minds who live today and the minds of men of merit who died while keeping this land to light with one mind contains the beautiful nature, old history, and human’s good temper. We hope you to enjoy the abundant autumn night with the lantern festival.”                                      - 2017 Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival Chairman
Tumblr media
“The origins of the festival can be traced back to 1592, the Jinjuseong battle, where lanterns were used as a military signal to prevent Japanese troops from wading the Namgang river. During the war floating lanterns were also used as a method for family members to communicate outside of the Jinjuseong Fortress. The tradition of floating lanterns down the Namgang river continued long after the war as a tribute to the 70,000 lives of civilians and soldiers lost during the battle. This tradition, over the decades have transformed and resulted in the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival we know today. “
Tumblr media
We finally set off to 진주 (Jinju) on the last day of the festival, which was held between the 1st and the 15th of October. We took a bus from 사상  (Sasang) station in Busan (the fare is 7.700 ₩) and had a very pleasant and fun 1 and a half hour ride to our destination. The bus station in Jinju is super close to the river, so you have to walk around 3 minutes to get there. As we arrived still in daylight (around 5 p.m.), we decided to take a look at the market on the riverbed, next to the festival. You could find anything there, but we pretty much went for the food, what is more, the boys even tried the 번데기, which are the pretty famous roasted silkworms usually sold from street vendors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(they weren’t very thrilled with it...)
After eating some more common aliments, we headed back to festival, payed the 10.000 ₩ fee and started exploring. The area where the lanterns can be seen is pretty big, so it takes a few hours to actually visit everything.
Tumblr media
As you can (or can’t really because it’s super small) see on the map above, the festival is divided up in different sections, which have different themes.
Tumblr media
Up in the fortress you can mainly see recreated moments from  the Jinjuseong battle (1592 - it’s where the festival originates from)....
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
... and daily life scenes dating back to the Joseon Dynasty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a separate section for Korean fairy tales and legends, which can be extremely funny for a foreigner who doesn’t know them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And my all time favorite one: 도깨비 (The Goblins)
Please take your time, and look at those faces. ONE. BY. ONE.
Tumblr media
Then there is a mythical animal category, which is - again- amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(this was the exact moment when I started to think that 500 hundred years ago everyone was doing very hard drugs in this country)
Fortunately they have something for the more artsy people too: enormous recreations of some of the most known paintings in the world.

Also I feel like the “just weird things” category is a legit category here, but let me show you, and then everyone gets to decide for themselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all we had great fun (even though it rained for like 2 hours, but we were invincible tourists in rain jackets and with photo cameras), and I’m super happy to be able to tick off this experience on my bucket list!
Tumblr media
I know that this textpost was a bit lacking text and contained mostly pictures, but I still hope it was enjoyable for you~
And as I mentioned before, if you have any question or you feel like I could help you with something, please feel free to write me ♡

Jinju's Landmark
Jinju’s Landmark
By Linda Tancs
Originally a mud castle, Jinjuseong Fortressis a memorial to South Korea’s embattled history, beginning with sea marauders in the 1300s, necessitating the structure’s stone reconstruction. Benefiting from a decades-long restoration effort, the fortress is part of a heavily wooded park with temples and shrines. The site also boasts Jinju National Museum, where the area’s war history…

Jinjuseong Fortress
