"If you didn't do anything that wasn't good for you it would be a very dull life. What are you gonna do? Everything that is pleasant in life is dangerous. Have you noticed that? I'd like to find the bastard that thought that one up." ¿Qué vas a hacer?  Todo lo que es agradable en la vida es peligroso.  ¿Lo has notado?  Me gustaría encontrar al bastardo que pensó eso." - Lemmy Kilmister #riplemmy #heavymetal #rocknroll #borntobewild #motorhead #rocktilidie #tiltheyburyme #100yearsofstimulatingads #100jahrestimulierendewerbung #100ansdepublicitesstimulantes #jimheimann #stevenheller #allisonsilver #dontforgivemeformysins #imfine #laborday2020 #tripwithmydad  (at Millennium Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE3EfyQgsSO/?igshid=1w69jz5qp4r3r

California Crazy “In college I majored in graphic design and had a minor in history, so I learned how to write and do research. I know a lot about a lot of things, and over 30 years have cultivated an ongoing interest in art, illustration, architecture, history, design and popular culture. This resulted in my publishing about 10 books prior to being hired by Benedikt, who early on saw I had a wide range of interests similar to his own. My collecting of paper ephemera and my interest in the visual history of illustration and graphic design made it easy to work up a whole series of titles that dovetailed perfectly with the Taschen program.” - Jim Heimann, Executive Editor for Taschen America, Los Angeles publishing arm. In 1920s America, at the dawn of the automobile age, diners and souvenir shops sought new, creative ways to lure drivers into their roadside establishments. The result was eccentric structures all along America’s Sunbelt, designed to be spotted from miles away. The roster includes owls, dinosaurs, coffee-pots, and even a Mexican giant standing on a roof serving nachos and beer. At the time, the architectural establishment dismissed these structures as “monstrosities”, but they flourished nevertheless, and now they’re even celebrated. ‘California Crazy: American Pop Architecture’ is a collection of images of some of the best, compiled by Taschen’s executive editor Jim Heimann. The book also includes David Gebhard’s definitive essay ‘Roadside Vernacular Architecture’ and traces the influences and attitudes that fostered the movement. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #taschen #book #californiacrazy #architecture #novelty #popculture #westcoast #roadsidearchitecture #innovative #kitsch #jimheimann (at California)

For Ryan Mungia's second book release on Boyo Press, he ventured back to America circa WWII, documenting the threat of VDs, via propaganda posters produced by our government during war time. In Protect Yourself: Venereal Disease Posters of World War II, Mungia, with the help of Jim Heimann's seemingly never-ending collection of graphic ephemera, has produced the first definitive look at (to quote Heimann in his accompanying essay) "how to present explicit sexual information," which at the time was, he says, "a challenge for the government." The results are stunning and (at times) comical, too. Sadly, most of the artists at the time went uncredited. Some have comic book-like qualities; in fact, Stan Lee, of Marvel fame, produced one while he was in the U.S. Signal Corp. These posters were, of course, a dying breed, as advancements in medicine (most notably penicillin) reduced the rates of syphilis and gonorrhea, two of the biggest STD offenders. "[These posters] represent," writes Heimann, "perhaps the last period when the poster could elicit a response from a mass audience on a widespread basis." Mungia's Protect Yourself is a time capsule of that era, beautifully produced in a limited edition of 250 copies.

California Crazy “It's interesting, the range of books Taschen publishes —from $9.99 to $12,500—and clearly they are visual books. But that's because Benedikt prints what he likes. His interest stems from a comic book store he had in Cologne when he was 18, and being mentored by a group of young Cologne gallery owners in the '80s who gave him a first -class introduction to the art world. Art and architecture are his real loves and the rest of Taschen's titles spin off from there. He wanted to make art available to the masses because he couldn't afford art books when he was younger.” - Jim Heimann, Executive Editor for Taschen America, Los Angeles publishing arm. Starting in the 1920s, inventive entrepreneurs began creating attention-grabbing buildings to appeal to passing drivers and while they were initially dismissed as monstrous, their appeal has endured. In Jim Heimann’s new book, California Crazy, a collection of essays accompanies images of the wildest examples. Owls, dinosaurs, coffee-pots, and even a Mexican giant serving nachos and beer - American pop architecture reached its peak on the West Coast and is now celebrated in a book named ‘California Crazy’. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #taschen #book #californiacrazy #architecture #novelty #popculture #westcoast #roadsidearchitecture #innovative #kitsch #jimheimann (at California)

I had my art talk today at Art Center College of Design with Jim Heimann's class. Jim knows more about the city of Los Angeles than anyone I know. He also has a great visual art vocabulary. Check out his book: Los Angeles, Portrait of a City via Taschen Books #art #JimHeimann #losangeles #patrickmartinez #accd
