JIm Henson: The Idea Man was More Than a Puppet Genius - He Was Family
Baby, the ugly cry was full on as I took a stroll back to my childhood through the artistry and genius of #JimHenson.@disneyplus https://wp.me/p2v8yf-6sf #IdeaMan #documentary #podcast
Little did I know my intro into the art of puppetry began watching The Muppet Show, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock.  As a former  cast member of the hit Broadway shows Avenue Q and The Lion King, I could’ve never imagined being part of  imaginary worlds bringing characters and songs to life with through the felt, rods ana paper maché looking artistry reached whole new levels in entertainment…

Dave Goelz's impression of Jim Henson is exactly the same as his Jimmy Shoe voice, I actually had to pause Idea Man to cry a little bit when I heard it

JIM HENSON IDEA MAN REVIEW!!!!!!!
-wish they talked about fraggle rock more
-wish they talked about the different muppeteers more
-liked the stuff on Jim and Jane’s relationship
-wanted frank oz to get the chance to talk shit about Disney but ofc he did not because it was a Disney documentary but yk
-cried like a baby during rainbow connection
-also cried like a baby at the funeral clips. I literally cannot see anything from that funeral without bursting into tears
-go watch the defunctland documentary series it’s a lot more in depth than this one
-they got some great people to interview! Was so excited to see Rita Moreno
-would recommend 👍

I watched the one on Disney, and thought it was okay/good. I haven't watched the one on defunctland, (or even heard of the channel before), but plan to check it out.

Ok very manly muppets let’s do this
Tumblr media
This documentary was great!!
Stylistically beautiful, I loved that their static set was a cube with things projected onto it, likely a nod to his short films and conceptual nightclub. Little details like that as well as the creative stop-motion graphics make it clear this was a labor of love for the creators.
I think for people who haven’t read the Jim Henson biography by Brian Jay Jones this documentary will teach you new things about his life, for me personally I knew everything they went over already because it was like a simplification of the bio (which is INCREDIBLE if you haven’t read it).
My main gripe is that it felt a bit rushed. My mom suggested it would’ve been easier to flesh things out as a like 6-part miniseries (coincidentally that exists, everyone watch defunctland’s jim Henson series), and I agree with her. They had to skip over a bunch of projects, including fraggle rock, and really glossed over the Disney merger. I don’t think it’s very clear that the deal fell through when Jim died. Jim’s death and funeral were also pretty rushed. I think the first hour of the documentary is really well paced and properly details everything he did, but then they had to really rush through all his accomplishments post-labyrinth.
I also wish they had had more time to go over the other muppet performers/ contributors and Jim’s relationship with them. They focused a decent amount on frank oz but still didn’t really get across just how close the two were, and the other performers were really glossed over. I think they mentioned my boy Richard hunt once, and Jerry juhl got brought up a few times but they never mentioned that his main contribution was writing for the muppets.
Overall I think the documentary is great for people who enjoy any Jim Henson productions and will teach a lot to the casual fan, but it’s noticeable how many small important details and big projects they had to leave out for the purpose of time.
Also terrible picture quality in the photo but MAN SPOTTED

I just watched the new Jim Henson documentary…
Overall it was very good, well paced, great visuals and editing. I learned a lot about Jim Henson and the company that I didn’t before and more behind the scenes that I hadn’t seen/heard which is always a treat!
I cried three times. 🫣👌 I had to fight the primal urge to pause the documentary and point out to my family where and what movie/show/episode every clip was from. This was my “did you know Viggo Mortensen actually broke his toe” scene.
I will say, I do think they very QUICKLY went over the disney merger and didn’t even mention the fallout with Disney after Jim’s death.
———————
The main problem I had was that SOME puppeteers got spot lights, interviews or arrows pointing out the individuals. And while I appreciate that these individuals got some recognition (which they 100% should), I think the documentary should have been consistent and do this with every new important/fundamental puppeteer to the film.
Tumblr media
I alreay have!!! I was able to EASILY point out Karen Prell, Louise Gold, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, Kevin Clash, Steve whitmire, etc. But an average viewer wouldn’t know who is who and what they contributed to the company!
I just think it’s intriguing who they chose to highlight and who they left out.
And I’ve noticed this happen in other muppet documentaries, like “Street Gang,” where they barely glossed over Richard Hunt and Jerry Nelson’s contributions to the show. (I’ve mentioned this problem here before. (Queer erasure during pride month? 🙄))
It would be such an easy problem to fix! Just a quick arrow to point out any new puppeteer or cast member to the Jim Henson Company. Maybe list their job/their characters so a main stream audience could identify them.
I can think of several founding members who are still alive today that were not interviewed. Maybe these people were asked to come in, IDK, but I would have loved to hear from more people you don’t hear from often.
I could definitely tell the documentary was really trying to avoid the “Steve Whitmire” sized elephant in the room, even though he was in SO MANY shots. I can guarantee that if he was still with the company he would have been featured heavily in the documentary.

One last thing…
They interviewed Michael Frith, where was my girl Kathryn Mullen?? (His wife.) She hasn’t done anything in over a decade, are you okay?? Blink if you need help. 👁️👄👁️😐😑😐😑
