My top 10 books of the year!
1 ) The Nothing Man - Catherine Ryan Howard -
At the age of twelve, Eve Black was the only member of her family to survive an encounter with serial attacker the Nothing Man. Now an adult, she is obsessed with identifying the man who destroyed her life. Supermarket security guard Jim Doyle has just started reading The Nothing Man--the true-crime memoir Eve has written about her efforts to track down her family's killer. As he turns each page, his rage grows. Because Jim's not just interested in reading about the Nothing Man. He is the Nothing Man. Jim soon beings to realize how dangerously close Eve is getting to the truth. He knows she won't give up until she finds him. He has no choice but to stop her first.
2 ) The Night Ship - Jess Kidd -
1629: A newly orphaned young girl named Mayken is bound for the Dutch East Indies on the Batavia , one of the greatest ships of the Dutch Golden Age. Curious and mischievous, Mayken spends the long journey going on misadventures above and below the deck, searching for a mythical monster. But the true monsters might be closer than she thinks. 1989: A lonely boy named Gil is sent to live off the coast of Western Australia among the seasonal fishing community where his late mother once resided. There, on the tiny reef-shrouded island, he discovers the story of an infamous shipwreck…
3) The Reading List - Sara Nisha Adams -
Widower Mukesh lives a quiet life in the London Borough of Ealing after losing his beloved wife. He shops every Wednesday, goes to Temple, and worries about his granddaughter, Priya, who hides in her room reading while he spends his evenings watching nature documentaries. Aleisha is a bright but anxious teenager working at the local library for the summer when she discovers a crumpled-up piece of paper in the back of To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s a list of novels that she’s never heard of before. Intrigued, and a little bored with her slow job at the checkout desk, she impulsively decides to read every book on the list, one after the other. As each story gives up its magic, the books transport Aleisha from the painful realities she’s facing at home. When Mukesh arrives at the library, desperate to forge a connection with his bookworm granddaughter, Aleisha passes along the reading list… hoping that it will be a lifeline for him too. Slowly, the shared books create a connection between two lonely souls, as fiction helps them escape their grief and everyday troubles and find joy again.
4) Midnight Is The Darkest Hour - Ashley Winstead -
Ruth Collier has always felt like an outsider, even as her father rains fire and brimstone from the church pulpit. In Bottom Springs, his word is as good as law. But there are things the townspeople fear more than God, like the Low Man, a vampiric figure said to kill sinners in their beds on moonless nights. When a skull is found deep in the swamp, a hunt for the Low Man begins. Suspicion turns to Everett – Ruth's oldest friend, with a dark past. As Ruth and Everett grow closer, Ruth begins to unearth the town's secrets, determined to discover the truth. But as the line between good and evil grows ever thin, how far will Ruth go to save the person she loves most?
5) The Appeal - Janice Hallett -
The Fairway Players, a local theatre group, is in the midst of rehearsals when tragedy strikes the family of director Martin Hayward and his wife Helen, the play’s star. Their young granddaughter has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and with an experimental treatment costing a tremendous sum, their castmates rally to raise the money to give her a chance at survival. But not everybody is convinced of the experimental treatment’s efficacy—or of the good intentions of those involved. As tension grows within the community, things come to a shocking head at the explosive dress rehearsal. The next day, a dead body is found, and soon, an arrest is made. In the run-up to the trial, two young lawyers sift through the material—emails, messages, letters—with a growing suspicion that the killer may be hiding in plain sight. The evidence is all there, between the lines, waiting to be uncovered.
6) My Sister, The Serial Killer - Oyinkan Braithwaite -
When Korede's dinner is interrupted one night by a distress call from her sister, Ayoola, she knows what's expected of her: bleach, rubber gloves, nerves of steel and a strong stomach. This'll be the third boyfriend Ayoola's dispatched in, quote, self-defence and the third mess that her lethal little sibling has left Korede to clear away. She should probably go to the police for the good of the menfolk of Nigeria, but she loves her sister and, as they say, family always comes first. Until, that is, Ayoola starts dating the doctor where Korede works as a nurse. Korede's long been in love with him, and isn't prepared to see him wind up with a knife in his back: but to save one would mean sacrificing the other...
7) Outlawed - Anna North -
The day of her wedding, 17 year old Ada's life looks good; she loves her husband, and she loves working as an apprentice to her mother, a respected midwife. But after a year of marriage and no pregnancy, in a town where barren women are routinely hanged as witches, her survival depends on leaving behind everything she knows. She joins up with the notorious Hole in the Wall Gang, a band of outlaws led by a preacher-turned-robber known to all as the Kid. Charismatic, grandiose, and mercurial, the Kid is determined to create a safe haven for outcast women. But to make this dream a reality, the Gang hatches a treacherous plan that may get them all killed. And Ada must decide whether she's willing to risk her life for the possibility of a new kind of future for them all.
8) Madhouse At The End Of The Earth - Julian Sancton -
The harrowing true survival story of an early polar expedition that went terribly awry--with the ship frozen in ice and the crew trapped inside for the entire sunless, Antarctic winter. Drawing on firsthand accounts of the Belgica's voyage and exclusive access to the ship's logbook, Sancton tells the tale of its long, isolated imprisonment on the ice--a story that NASA studies today in its research on isolation for missions to Mars. In vivid, hair-raising prose, Sancton recounts the myriad forces that drove these men right up to and over the brink of madness.
9) Morbidly Yours - Ivy Fairbanks -
Callum Flannelly would rather dive into an open grave than take a stranger to dinner and a movie. But he can only inherit the family undertaking business and carry on their legacy under one condition: He must marry before his 35th birthday. So it’s out of the mortuary and into the dating scene. Lark Thompson would rather get crushed by a falling anvil than stay next to a funeral home during her stay in Galway, Ireland. The vivacious American cartoon creator and animator came here to embrace life, not be reminded of losing her husband. When Lark learns of Callum’s dilemma and aversion to marrying out of necessity rather than love, she agrees to help the introverted mortician. Although sworn off love herself, she is optimistic that Callum can find The One and secure his inheritance. But as the dating project progresses and their friendship grows, so does a mutual attraction. The more time she spends with serious, sarcastic Callum, the more she dreads finding him a match. And the more disastrous dates he endures, the more he dreads Lark’s imminent return to the states. If they think it’s possible to ignore their connection, they’re dead wrong.
10) Bunny - Mona Awad -
Samantha Heather Mackey couldn't be more of an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at New England's Warren University. A scholarship student who prefers the company of her dark imagination to that of most people, she is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort--a clique of unbearably twee rich girls who call each other Bunny, and seem to move and speak as one. But everything changes when Samantha receives an invitation to the Bunnies' fabled Smut Salon, and finds herself inexplicably drawn to their front door--ditching her only friend, Ava, in the process. As Samantha plunges deeper and deeper into the Bunnies' sinister yet saccharine world, beginning to take part in the ritualistic off-campus Workshop where they conjure their monstrous creations, the edges of reality begin to blur. Soon, her friendships with Ava and the Bunnies will be brought into deadly collision.

obviously (more than anything) I want to see Stede and Ed reunited and fuckery to ensue. I don’t much care how they play it (happy, sad, angry, silly) I just want more of them onscreen together. Rhys and Taika have such great chemistry. But I also want to see backgrounds for more of the crew (how they became the men they are). Particularly Izzy Hands. What made him like that? what made him worship Blackbeard so much? I also want to see a good sword fight between Izzy and Jim. (and more Jim backstory in general.) from the actual history of pirates of that time, I’d love it if we met Benjamin Hornigold (Ed’s former captain) and Samuel Bellamy (aka Black Sam aka “the Prince of Pirates” or the “Robin Hood” of pirates. He was known for his mercy and generosity to those he captured on raids. I think he’d get along well with Stede! Black Sam also had a mysterious relationship with a “witch” from Cape Cod named Goody Hallett. I’d love to meet them in season two! also the lesbian pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read! (I’d love it if we found Anne and Mary were behind the mutiny aboard Calico Jack’s ship. And they are now co-captaining it happily. Out on the open sea! Being gay and doing crimes!) I hope we deal thematically in season two with toxic masculinity and intergenerational trauma. And forgiveness. and lord I hope it’s totally bizarre and super funny. imma be pissed if they lose any of the humor in season two and go too sappy. There’s so much potential! fingers crossed?
Woah okay lots to unpack here!!! I gotta say; I agree with pretty much everything you just said OP!!! Very well put!!!
I keep going back and fourth about how I want The Reunion between Ed and Stede to go down; whether it should be super romantic, or angsty, or a full-on sword fight, or if they should make it more comedic and lighthearted and tbh any route they decide to go with would be fine by me! I just wanna see them together again because i really do believe that one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) strengths of this show is Taika and Rhys together.
I would LOVE some more background on Izzy, but tbh I'm really interested in Stede's crew too!! I was wondering about this earlier actually so it's funny you bring it up lol, but i wonder how/why they agreed to be a part of Stede's crew? Like, maybe it was because he was offering to pay actual wages? Or maybe it was because they needed to hide somewhere (well, we know that is probably true for Jim and Olu, but what about everyone else..?) I would also be interested in Blackbeard and Calico Jack's past, and their experiences on Hornigold's ship
I definitely want to see more female pirates in season 2 as well!! As I mentioned in a previous ask, I'm not totally sure how they'd work it into the show yet considering the cast of characters is already pretty large and spread-out just in the first season, but it would lowkey feel like a missed opportunity if they didn't at least lightly feature Anne Bonny and Mary Read at some point
I definitely think we're gonna get more storylines about gender and toxic masculity in season 2, just judging from where episode 10 left us off. Like, idk if this is me just projecting my nonbinary-ness onto another one of my comfort characters lol but I just feel as though Ed taking on this "Kraken" persona at the end of ep 10 feels a lot like.. a transition? A changing of identity? And most of it is rooted in toxic masculinity and pressure placed on him to present/act a certain way (enforced by Izzy in ep 10 but probably taught to him when he was a child) because in the very beginning of episode 10, i think Ed was really beginning to embrace a more conventionally "feminine" side of himself (the pink nail polish, the floral robe, being very open and vulnerable emotionally with the other men on the ship and encouraging them to do the same, ect.) and I think a lot of season 2 is going to see Ed sorta struggling between these two identities a lot..
woww that was long lol thank you for all the suggestions OP!!
Tell me what you're most excited to see in season 2!!

silas sanford – six characters
i. george wallace (as portrayed in the film selma) “Now I can't make a move against that backwoods, white trash Sheriff Clark 'cause it'll be seen as I'm helping King. But someone got to get Jim Clark under control. Election year’s coming up and this black voting business won’t abide.” • SIlas doesn’t necessarily agree with conservative views that he preaches, but he has a good understanding of his base of voters and what will continue to get him elected. Even if it means acting contrary to progressive views, he will do it for the sake of his political career. ii. hans landa (from inglourious basterds) “So, gentlemen, let's discuss the prospect of ending the war tonight.“ • Hans Landa is emblematic of opportunism and having no conception of loyalty to his political party (and country). Silas is certainly willing to fuck over his Republican colleagues for his own again and if it came to it, he would likely even sell out his own country for his ambition. iii. petyr baelish (from game of thrones) “Chaos isn't a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but they refuse. They cling to the realm or the gods or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.” • Silas resents people who have been into wealthy and privileged families who have been given every opportunity in life and who squander it, while he has needed to work very hard to get to where he is in life. iv. gordon gekko (from wall street) “Greed is good.” • Silas is not ashamed of his greed or ambition. He doesn’t think that there is anything shameful in aspiring to greatness. It is through men who strive their hardest to get what they want that in fact, comes significant advances in humanity. It is people who are willing to pour everything into their goals who manage to do great things. And that one should be justly rewarded for those achievements. v. p.t. barnum (from the greatest showman) BARNUM: “Mr. Hallet, I know how I look to you, but you have my word, I will take care of your daughter. And one day, I’ll buy her a house like this one --” MR. HALLETT: “With what?! You have no education, no prospects... No common sense!” • What Silas has hated more than anything is being looked down upon because he wasn’t born into a wealthy, important family. That despite working how hard that he has to get to where he has and the fact that he is intelligent and capable, he has been passed over for position by others who might be better connected to him, but in fact who are less deserving than him. vi. lucius malfoy (from harry potter) "I hope my son will amount to more than a thief or a plunderer, Borgin... Though if his school marks don't pick up, that may indeed be all he is fit for—" • Silas is exceptionally tough on his son, Henry, and expects a lot from him. He wants his son to succeed, for his own sake, and for the the family name. Though he expects a lot from his son and dishes out a lot of tough love, he still does ultimately love Henry.
#challenge#cbcchallenge#this might as well just be a list of all the most terrible characters i know

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indy Fuel, ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks and the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs announced that Doug Christiansen has been named the third head coach and general manager of the team.
Christiansen, 41, continues his coaching career in the ECHL after finishing up his first season as head coach with the Manchester Monarchs. He compiled a 39-29-4 record while also boasting a strong playoff run during his first season as a head coach which ended in the North Division Finals, where the Monarchs fell in six games to the eventual Kelly Cup champion Newfoundland Growlers
“We are very excited to have Doug join the Fuel organization,” Fuel owner Jim Hallett said. “We were overwhelmed by the number of applicants during our extensive search for the next head coach. The top qualities we looked at were leadership, experience and the ability to recruit top talent. With Doug’s experience both as a winning coach in Manchester and his ability to build relationships with players while serving as Director of Recruitment for the USHL we are confident he will build a victorious tradition in Indy and serve as a pillar in the community.”

"Coed Murders Detailed by Chang"
(October 23rd, 1973)
An air of tragedy and grief pervaded the courtroom as parents of three slain coeds took the witness stand to testify in the murder trial of Edmund Emil Kemper III this morning in Santa Cruz.
It was the first time for each of them, the reality of seeing the man who, by his own admission, killed, sexually assaulted and dismembered their daughters. The hearing opened this morning with a brief low-key opening statement by Prosecutor Peter Chang. Chang told the jurors, "None of this will be pleasant.
"He said the case will be presented on three basic points. It will be necessary to establish the corpus delecti (that a crime has been committed) in the murders of two girls, Anita Luchessa, 18-year-old Fresno State College coed, and Aiko Koo, 15, of Berkeley, "because all of their bodies were never really found," Chang said.
Another section of the trial will be devoted to the statements made to investigators by Kemper after his arrest in April. Kemper made lengthy and detailed statements relating to all of the killings and taped and transcripts of these statements have been submitted into evidence in a prior hearing by Judge Harry F. Brauer. Chang said also that three psychiatrists will testify and "for once," he said with emphasis, "they will all agree unanimously that the defendant is legally sane, able to premeditate and deliberate, and maturely and meaningfully reflect on the gravity and enormity of his acts."
Then Chang began to detail the murders involved in the case, saying they began In May 7, 1972, and ended in April, 1973. At one point he paused, his voice choking; he turned to the jurors and said, "excuse me, it's hard for me to make an opening statement in this case."
He related how Kemper picked up Anita Luchessa and Mary Ann Pesce in Berkeley in May of last year and drove them to the hills back of Hayward, "attempting to have sex with them and killed them."
After stabbing them to death Chang said Kemper took their bodies to his apartment in Alameda where the next day he dismembered them and disposed of them in Santa Cruz County.
Of Miss Koo, Chang said Kemper picked her up in Berkeley, drove her to the Bonny Doon area, handcuffed her, tied her wrists, then taped her mouth and pinched her nose until she suffocated."
After that, he had intercourse with her body and then took it to his Alameda apartment where he kept it for a day or two before dismembering it and disposing of parts of her body in several places."
On Jan, 8, Chang said, Kemper picked up Cynthia Schall, 19, as she was hitchhiking to Cabrillo College and drove her out to the Corralitos - Freedom area where he talked her into getting into the trunk of his car, telling her he was going to take her to his house to talk, and then shot her in the head with a .22 caliber pistol he had purchased that day.
Chang said Kemper took her body to his mother's house and the next day while his mother was at work brought the body into the house, had intercourse with it and then dismembered It. The next day he disposed of the parts of her body in Monterey County where some were later found, while others washed up on the beach in Santa Cruz.
The other two coeds, Rosalind Thorpe, 20, and Alice Liu, 20, both of UCSC, were picked up the night of Feb. 5 as they were leaving the university campus. En route Kemper stopped at a viewpoint on the campus "to look at the lights," pulled a gun and shot Miss Thorpe in the left side of her head, He then shot Miss Liu several times.
After this, Chang said, Kemper drove to Davenport, where he put the bodies in the car trunk, and then drove home. The next day, Chang continued, he disposed of their bodies in the Eden Canyon area of Alameda County and their heads in San Mateo County in an effort to divert law enforcement attention from Santa Cruz County.
Chang said several weeks later Kemper felt he was suspected by police when they came to his mother's home and confiscated a .44 Magnum revolver he had bought in Santa Cruz. Sheriff's deputies checking out records of gun sales discovered Kemper's murder record as a juvenile.
Kemper surrendered the gun to them but "expected the police to come back," and then on Easter week killed his "mother (Mrs. Clarnell Strandberg) as she slept, with a single hammer blow to the head."
The next day, Chang said Kemper telephoned his mother's best friend, Mrs. Sara Taylor Hallett, saying he wanted to surprise his mother and take her and Mrs. Hallett to dinner that night.
Chang said Kemper made preparations for Mrs. Hallett's murder by distributing weapons around the apartment but that it was "not necessary."
After Mrs. Hallett arrived, Chang said, "He choked her and she died. Later he had intercourse with her."
Defense lawyer Jim Jackson deferred his opening statement until later.
Kemper, who arrived at the courthouse with two guards this morning greeted the barrage of cameramen with a smile but his demeanor became more subdued as he sat in the courtroom when the parents of the murdered girls began to take the stand. He did not look at either of the fathers as they testified.
Gabriel Pesce of Camarillo was the first to testify. A man of medium height but solidly built, Pesce was the picture of controlled agony as he stood before the court clerk to be sworn in.
He was asked by Chang, "Did you have a daughter named Mary Ann Pesce?"
"Yes, I did," said Pesce, and his eyes turned fastened on the giant young defendant seated at the counsel table.
Under questioning from Chang, Pesce said his daughter, though she weighed only about 100 pounds and was about five feet tall, had been an expert skier and aspired to try out for the Olympics. He said she was a good student and had been a trophy winner on her high school debating team. He told of his efforts to file a missing person report after her disappearance saying that in one instance police told him, "There's nothing to worry about. Just wait."
Prior to the hearing this morning Pesce told a reporter that he intended to listen to the testimony in the case because he thought it might help to "finalize" the loss of his daughter. He and his wife remained seated in the spectator's section after he left the witness stand.
The second father, Louis Luchessa of Modesto, also spoke of his efforts to locate his daughter, including hiring a private investigator. Luchessa's voice broke as he spoke and tears came to his eyes. "We tried to do all we could to find her," he said and wept.
Perhaps the most pathetic of the three was Mrs. Skaitrite Rubene, mother of Miss Koo. A tiny, frail woman, she spoke with an accent from her native Latvia. She explained that she used the name Koo "during the time my daughter was alive." But she said her daughter was "illegitimate ... and her father never helped us."
She was asked by Chang to describe her daughter's appearance the last night she saw her alive on September 14 of last year, and Mrs. Rubene lapsed into a kind of revery, her eyes unfocused as she described her only child. Asked by Chang if her daughter had given her any reason to believe that she had run away without telling her, the mother declared, "She would never have done that."
She left the stand with her hand to her forehead, refusing to glance at Kemper as she left the courtroom.

Wikipedia describes Nose art as a decorative painting or design on the fuselage of a military aircraft, usually chalked up on the front fuselage, and is a form of aircraft graffiti.
While begun for practical reasons of identifying friendly units, the practice evolved to express the individuality often constrained by the uniformity of the military, to evoke memories of home and peacetime life, and as a kind of psychological protection against the stresses of war and the probability of death. The appeal, in part, came from nose art not being officially approved, even when the regulations against it were not enforced.
I’ve attached hundreds of unique color photos Huey’s, Chinooks, and more, showing how soldiers decorated their helicopters during the Vietnam War. Most are elaborate, colorful, and often comical art inspired by Sixties and Seventies pop culture, music, cartoons and comics, psychedelia, and politics, as well as sex and booze. The artwork personalizes an aircraft for its crew, because it is the crew members who name the aircraft and create the art, christening it with an identity of its own.
I’d like to offer a special “Thank You” to John Conway for allowing me to share many of these pictures from his Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association (VHPA) Museum – donors of individual pictures are credited below. The museum website is chock full of pictures, stories and other aviation information from the Vietnam War. The museum continues to grow and John welcomes any donations of images, stories or memorabilia for inclusion into the website and live exhibits. Please make it a point to visit the museum in the near future at http://www.vhpamuseum.org
Quite a few pictures in the SLIDE SHOW below are not identified by unit or have additional info about the artwork. If you can identify and provide that information, please get back to me. Also, if anyone wants to contribute personal pictures of their ship’s artwork (Vietnam era) and back-up information, I’d be honored to add them to this article. You can also mention whether or not I can forward copies to John Conway for the museum.
I hope you enjoy the 200+ photos!

Hank Llewellyn Interestingly, the photo, “71 AHC Rattlers – Image courtesy of Jim Adams, 1st Platoon Leader, Dec 68 – Dec 69” is of Medal of Honor recipient Col. Bruce Crandall’s door art. It was painted by CWO Sid Cowen. The doors adorned, then Major Crandall, Huey into the battle of the Ia Drang Valley, Nov 1965. The blue triangle indicates Alpha Company of the 229th AHB. The coiled serpent is formed in the shape of a “6” re: “Serpent 6” Crandall’s call sign. Photo is on display in the Pentagon “Hall of Hero’s”. Bruce returned to VN in1967 but was unable to locate the old doors that were refitted to each Huey he flew.
The 174th Dolphins, the “slicks,” adopted the above nose-art logo in mid-1967 that became a standard for several years. While there were a few individualized drawings used for nose-art on Dolphins, both before and after the ones depicted here, none were known to have been used on more than one aircraft at a time. Photo by Jim McDaniel, 1967.
Warlord 043 donated by Charles H. Hallett Jr. 123rd AVN Bn Co B Aero Scouts – Americal Division. Supported troops in Happy Valley and A Shau Valley.
We used the Griffin call sign for the UH-1’s and the Little Griffin call sign for the LOH’s. I recall, some time before I left in 69, that we had to give up the Griffin call sign because some other unit was using it. One of the nose paintings was “Virgin Eater”. Another was “Cherry Popper.” This was based upon the logic that the mythical griffin only ate virgins – a perfect theme for young male pilots. Pilots’ names in this shot are; left as you face the chopper – CWO Bruce Sutton, and right as you face the chopper – CWO Richard Vonhatten. Image courtesy of Pete Rzeminski, CW2 (8/68 – 12/69), HHC (Avn Det), 1st Brigade, 101st Abn Div.
“The Incredible Hulk” of the 121st AHC – This ship had some reason to be slung back to Soc Trang. On down wind it began to oscillate and the Chinook had to punch him off at about 300 feet. With about 40 guys watching including the AC. I had my camera and for the life of me don’t know why I wasn’t taking pic’s. Dam! makes me sick everytime I think about it. Image courtesy of Lowell L. Eneix.
D 3/5 OH-23 “Raven” featuring nose art of the “Spooks” Scout platoon (circa 1967). The “Spooks” were the predecessors of the Warwagons and possibly the only unit to fly the Raven in combat. Image courtesy of Richard Bench
This piece of Nose art lasted less than a month. This helicopter’s crew chief was the pilot NCOIC for the Aero rilfle plt’s birds. His name was SFC John R Rock. (AT this time the Sgt Rock Comics were hot). D/1/1 had deployed from Fort Hood to join with our parent squadron 1/1 Armored Squadron assigned to the American Div in Chu Lai. Enroute our orders were changed attaching the troop to 2/17 Cav, 101st. This was the period of time when the division went from Airbone, to Airmobile and back to Airborne (Airmoble) in less than 2 months. We had the first Cobras attached to the division and 1st Avn Bde units supporting the 101st were redesignated as 101 units . The Division had become the Army’s second Airmobile Division As soon as the change was “Officially Completed” The word came down from Division Hqs there would be no Nose Art in the division and Sgt Rock disappeared. Image courtesy of Ray Knight
“Strawberry Bitch” of the 121st AHC (Namesake of the B-24 now in the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio – ” I am pretty sure the pilot of that AC was the SON of the pilot who flew the B-24 on display at Wright-Patterson. Our company commander made him change it from “bitch” to “blonde” didn’t want any “nasty words” being displayed. So this just might be the only picture of the original “Strawberry Bitch” of the 121st” – Lowell Eneix Image courtesy of Lowell L. Eneix
Casper Aviation Platoon was the only separate aviation platoon in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Casper was organized with the 173d Airborne Brigade on Okinawa in 1963 and arrived in country with the Brigade on May 5, 1965 becoming the first United States Army ground unit committed to the Vietnam War. Casper Platoon supported the Brigade until they all left Vietnam in August 1971.
“The nose art is basically the standard design of several of our Huey’s but I added the name “Tumbleweed”. That’s what I called my ship. The door art was a take off of a Sunday morning cartoon character. My CE at that point was a Sergeant John Sulfridge. We had to sneak the parts down town and have the art work done. I sent him in while I waited in the jeep. That was a mistake as you see my last name is misspelled. I was with D-Troop 3/5th From Sept ’70 to ’71. We changed our Unit to C 3/17 sometime before I left. I was the “Slick” Platoon Commander “Long Knife 26”. Image courtesy of Mike Rokey

Don't Move, Improve! 2021 shortlist spotlights London's best house renovations
A minimalist charred-wood extension, a garden studio wrapped in green terrazzo and an origami-inspired annexe are in the running to be crowned London's best home improvement of 2021.
A total of 22 projects have been shortlisted for this year's Don't Move, Improve! contest – an annual competition held by New London Architecture (NLA) in celebration of the "diversity and character of homes being redesigned" in the UK capital.
The awards programme is open to any home-improvement project that has completed in the last two years in any of London's 33 boroughs.
Among the other projects recognised in the shortlist are a revamp of a Walter Segal self-build house, a sculptural precast extension by Studio Ben Allen and a mountain-like addition to an Edwardian residence.
Office S&M's colourful remodel of a Georgian townhouse is also in the running, alongside a pink-hued concrete extension it has added to a home in Haringey.
While competing to be the overall winner, shortlisted entries can also win seven "special prizes". These include the Compact Design of the Year, the Environmental Leadership Prize and the Most Unique Character Award.
This year, there is also the WFH Design of the Year award, which will be given to the project that best supports working from home.
The judging panel for 2021 is headed up by NLA's curator-in chief Peter Murray and includes architects Amin Taha of Groupwork and Melissa Dowler of Bell Phillips.
Grand Designs Magazine editor Karen Stylianides is also on the team, alongside Whitby Wood's Sebastian Wood, property journalist Kunle Barker, Tom Foxall of Historic England and managing director of NLA Tamsie Thomson.
The panel said that while this year's shortlisted projects vary in budget and briefs, each design is underpinned by an ambition to provide homeowners with functional and contemporary living spaces.
"We have seen projects that are muted and some with hyper-trendy futuristic colour palettes, in every case though, the top 100, and especially the shortlist have impressed us with the way in which they address the needs of the homeowner, which of course, is the most important function of a home," reflected Thomson.
Winners will be announced later this year at an invite-only exhibition. Previous overall winners include a double-height extension in Lambeth, a residence with a sunken Japanese-style bath and a home built within an abandoned chapel.
