Reading into Star Trek characters on Memory Alpha, and have realised that people are sponsored when they go to the Academy. We see this with Jim in Star Trek 2009, but this implies that Bones is sponsored too? I'm going with that it's Phillip Boyce

Joyce thinking that she caused Bob's death because he got involved in the upside down to help her

Joyce having to turn the keys that would kill the man she loves because she has to save the kids

Joyce going to Bob and Hopper's funerals but refusing to deal with this new reality because it's too much

Joyce latching to the idea that maybe Hop is alive because they didn't find a body

Joyce knowing what her breakdown when Will went missing did to Jonathan and keeping it together even when she thinks she's right and Hopper is alive because she doesn't have proof of any of this and she has to take care of the kids first, that's what Hopper would have wanted

Joyce having so much difficulty holding all of these different realities together that she ends up not noticing that her kids are suffering from depression and hiding things from her

Joyce crying in her room alone trying to not make the kids hear to not add to their pain

Joyce composing herself and going to check on them before going to sleep because she needs to know that at least they are safe

re: this post and Kirk and Pike and their drinking habits

Kirk doesn’t seem to drink alone. At least we never see him drink alone as a captain. Aboard the ship, it’s always McCoy who brings him or pours him a drink in order to make Kirk relax. He often brings the alcohol as a comfort, as a way to make him talk. It’s almost a ritual that is always initiated by McCoy for Kirk’s own sake. McCoy does it as a friend, but he also does it from his position as Kirk’s doctor.

“Sometimes a man’ll tell his bartender things he’ll never tell his doctor.”

Pike doesn’t have anyone like that. Pike presents himself as everyone’s friend, and he makes sure it’s him who’s there for everyone, and that reflects even on the times when he’s in his own quarters talking to Una or Spock and it’s him who’s being “comforted”. At those times, it’s still Pike who plays a host and offers them a drink. For his own sake because they won’t do it for him. He pretends they’re his bartenders since that role doesn’t belong to anyone, and he needs to pour himself that drink.

Una is almost like Pike’s McCoy but not really. At times, Spock is almost like Pike’s McCoy but not really. He’s like twenty years younger than Pike and inexperienced, among other things. Neither of them have the option to question him and press him in the way that McCoy can with Kirk because neither of them can relieve him of his command. And M’Benga doesn’t seem to want that role.

Mister Spock, the man on top walks a lonely street. The chain of command is often a noose. is as real for Pike as it’s real for Kirk. Pike just has a more open personality and a way to captain the ship that make him seem less lonely on the outside.

McCoy

“Merry Christmas mo ghràdh.”

McCoy stretched a little then opened his eyes to look at his husband above him. Scotty leaned down and McCoy met him for a brief kiss.

“Merry Christmas darlin’,” he said when they broke apart. He laid his head back on the pillow and closed his eyes. He blew out a long breath.

McCoy sat up quickly a moment later and hurried over to the windows. He peeked outside, then threw back the curtains.

“It’s snowing,” he said as he walked quickly back to the bed. “C’mere.” He reached for Scotty as he pulled the covers back up with his other hand.

“How could this be any better?” he asked as he snuggled against Scotty. “Christmas and snow and you!” He tipped his head into Scotty’s hand as the Scotsman’s fingers went through his hair.

“Aye, it’s very nice,” Scotty agreed softly. “But presents and family and breakfast are nice too.”

McCoy let out a laugh. “Let us enjoy this for at least a few minutes.”

“Alright love,” Scotty said. He pressed a kiss to the top of McCoy’s head.

Thirty minutes later found them cleaned and dressed and entering the dining room. Dr. Boyce was alone at the table.

“Good morning, merry Christmas,” he greeted them.

“Merry Christmas to you too,” McCoy smiled back. “Are we late?” He glanced around the empty table. Plates were still set.

Dr. Boyce gave a loud chuckle. “It appears everyone has decided to sleep in today.”

“I knew we should have stayed in bed,” McCoy said to Scotty. His husband laughed and sat down.

“Good morning your highness, sir,” an older woman greeted them as she entered through the kitchen door. “I thought I heard voices. I’ll have something out in just a moment.”

“Thank you,” McCoy called after her.

“I thought yer family let the staff have Christmas off,” Scotty said quietly.

“We do,” McCoy said quickly. “A few of the people who live up here volunteered to stay. They had nowhere else to be this year.”

“Oh.”

“I’m surprised Mr. Scott wasn’t the first person up,” Dr. Boyce said.

“Who said he wasn’t lad?”

Dr. Boyce turned as Granddad walked in.

“Forgive me,” Dr. Boyce smiled.

Granddad nodded. “Aye, I’ve been up. I just don’t feel like moving fast today.”

“Merry Christmas Granddad,” Scotty said across the table.

“And merry Christmas to ye lads,” Alasdair replied looking at the three others.

The kitchen door opened and the older woman came back with dishes she set in front of them.

Breakfast was lively. The king and queen had been the last to the table. Leah looked to be glowing and her eyes were filled with stars whenever she looked at Robbie. The younger Scott looked quite pleased as well.

“I suppose you children can’t wait any longer,” Eleanor teased as they all finished eating. “Come on then.” She stood up and taking David’s arm led the way to the living room with the Christmas tree.

“Go on then,” she laughed and gestured to the tree and the presents below it.

Scotty

"Oh wow! Look at this!"

"Ooo! That's so cool!"

"I always wanted to read this book."

Several voices echoed through the living room as everyone unpacked their presents. There were so many boxes for all of them and it was easy to tell just how happy the old and the young were with what they found under the Christmas tree.

"I bet Jimbo will be so jealous when he sees those warm socks mum knitted for us," Scotty said with a grin, holding up a pair of red socks. Robbie had recieved black, Leonard blue and Leah purple ones.

"What makes ye think that Jim and Spock didn't get the same present? I ken that it's warm on Vulcan, but when they come back they'll need something to warm their feet too," Francine said, before taking a sip of her tea, and everyone looked at her.

"You sent Christmas presents to Vulcan?" Leonard asked, before he glanced at the others. A grin formed on his face. "I bet Spock and the rest of his Vulcan family won't ever stop talking about how illogical that is."

"Ach, that doesn't matter! All of my lads deserve to get their presents, illogical or not," Francine returned.

That made everyone laugh.

"Well then... as soon as Jim gets that present, I'm sure he'll call."

And Robbie was right.

It wasn't too much later when Scotty's PADD rang. A knowing smile formed on the Scotsman's face and when he saw the ID on the screen he instantly handed the device over to his mother.

"That call is for ye anyway," he said and Francine smiled too, answering the call.

"Merry Christmas," she greeted the calling person cheerfully and slowly but surely everyone gathered around Francine to get a good look at the screen.

"Francine! Everyone! Merry Christmas!" Jim was grinning from ear to ear as he waved his hand excitedly. Next to him, in a way calmer manner, sat Spock.

"I too wish all of you a merry Christmas. Even though I consider it illogical to celebrate this festivity, I thank you for your present, Ms. Scott."

"Will you look at those socks! They are just awesome, aren't they?" Jim held up his pair of golden socks and waved them through the air. "Spock's got green ones."

Francine couldn't help but chuckle. She seemed to be quite happy about that reaction.

"Oh, I'm so glad ye lads like my presents. How are ye doing?"

They talked a while about Jim and Spock's vacation. Amanda and Sarek joined in too after a while and it was really nice to get to spend some time together like this.

"I suppose we'll see you on Georgiares soon?" Leonard asked curiously and Sarek gave him a nod.

"We will be traveling back in two days, your highness."

"I can't wait to see y'all," Jim exclaimed, but it was quite obvious that he was mostly looking forward to see Francine.

"We'll try and save you some cookies, but we can't promise anything" Leah said teasingly with a grin on her face, before she shoved a cookie into her mouth.

"Ha! Just eat them all up! Francine and I will bake new ones anyway!" Jim shot back and they all laughed.

"We surely will, Jim. Take care of ye. All of ye."

"We will."

"Enjoy the day."

There is even a owl in Joyce's room after Bob dies because the owls are a symbol of Vecna's victims since season 1 (we see them in Will's room, for Barb when they show her pictures at her parents house etc etc Max with the owl sticker at the counsellor), plus they have lover's lake framed behind because it's a lovers scene between Joyce and Hopper that are supporting each other

Also interesting that Jim is framed directly under the owl, it could be foreshadowing for his fake death the next season

Also this Officer’s Manual...

let’s ignore their dates because they’re off from what’s common now, for example Kirk being born in 2229 (still in March, but on the 26th) and the 5ym being finished in 2265 (when Kirk was promoted to an admiral at the ripe age of 36 - I wanted to laugh at this, then I realized that it was 37 in canon, so................)

let’s also ignore the factual mistakes (like the manual is like Kirk was the only one of two witnesses on Tarsus IV, and like that obviously isn’t true. So I’m just gonna handpick a few stuff that fit my personal interpretation) and there’s a lot of them, and the fat phobia

but, the manual also assumes that Kirk did the survey on Tyree’s planet under Garrovick. Which like thanks. After Farragut they have him serve on USS Alexander (which I guess I could use as a name since I’m bad with naming things) - where he was the XO, the captain was killed and he assumed command, and at the age of 30 he became the captain of the Enterprise - which funnily enough actually does fit, more or less, even though I prefer 31 (in my personal timeline)

BUT the manual says his father is deceased (the profile says Kirk is 36, so in the manual it would be after the 5ym ended, but I’m gonna assume it’s been a while, and thanks. Good to know that when only TOS was around Kirk’s father was supposed to be dead because that’s my hc and reading.)

“His chief psychological problem is the expression of normal human emotions, which he finds almost impossible due to the barrier that he has constructed between himself and his crew.” - Like, while I wouldn’t necessarily word it exactly this way, yes. I did say in the past that the reason why I think Spock understands Kirk is because Kirk like Spock fights “two halves” of himself - sometimes to an unhealthy degree.

he’s 40 (at the end of 5ym), which means 4 years older than Kirk, and I like this age gap (I kind of feel that when people don’t use the AOS years of births, they only have two years between them, and I personally am not a fan of just two years). Funnily enough that also fits with what’s established today (his age at the end of 5ym). But I hate when it used to be common to give Kirk and Spock the same birthday just because the actors were born on the same day. I’m glad current canon took care of that. It doesn’t even make sense because of TWOK, I wanted to say, but TWOK was two years after this manual kasdhsjdfhjsdhfj (I mean it’s fun to see what was a thing before something else changed it on screen)

Sarek, retired Ambassador and physicist, age 105. Love the physicist thing. But “retired” is fun.

“After eight months as the director of The Vulcan Science Academy, Spock elected to become a candidate for the kolinahr.” oooooooh, this is cool, and literally could be employed in fics without messing with canon.

The manual says that Xtmprszntwlfd has 6 syllables (how) He also apparently has a patronymic “Sareku” okay

Leonard Horatio McCoy

as usual, he’s 11 years older than Jim, and 7 years older than Spock

the manual is like McCoy applied to Starfleet at the age of 27 (hello AOS, it’s 28 there though) and spent two years at the Academy studying space medicine. 

What they write about McCoy is similar to what I hc, he served on a ship (USS Hood), got into an argument with CMO, transferred to surgeon’s general office, did “cultural observations” on several planets, then he asked for a ship duty, got assigned to the Enterprise after Boyce died, as a replacement surgeon, and after a few years he took over Piper. Which also means that my hc that McCoy was actually on board during the first pilot is not weird lol 

Both parents are deceased, no siblings.

Joanna’s mother was killed during food riots on Cerberus. OK

Joanna is 23, married, and has two kids. ok

......... also apparently whoever wrote the manual thought that McCoy would get together with the woman from Mudd’s Passion he told about how he saved everyone’s lives on the Enterprise while under an influence (that woman didn’t even have a name on screen ffs)......... I wish this manual didn’t introduce me to the existence of this episode.

Probably gonna pick the “important” stuff (for me) and make a normal post, connecting them to my headcanon and fitting it within my personal timeline that follows modern dates. 

In any case, I think this officer’s manual is a fan thing, but it’s still fun imho because it’s a nice look into the past. And tbh I had more fun reading these profiles than I did with anything “official”. But mostly because a lot of the info is quite similar to my own inner universe. I’m just like 40 years too late...

I really, really want to write an academy au story where there is, like, a potluck or something for medical and science honors students and teachers, and that's where Bones and Spock officially first meet. And someone insults the pecan pie Bones brings, and he gets all huffy because that's his great granny's recipe! And he just so happens to vent about it to Spock, who just so happens to be seated at his table (because Dr Boyce wanted Bones to maybe make more friends closer to his own age).

Spock'll let him vent about it before bringing up (in his polite way, of course) that the cadet that insulted the pie was asked to only bring napkins and plates. Bones is southern, he'll realize what an insult that is! And he'll decide then and there that Spock's good people, especially after he asks about the recipe. He might not get his name or that he's a professor, at least then, but he won't forget him. That's why, after Jim's trial, he says "I don't know, but I like him."

I like to think that Vulcans who come to understand that Humans just can’t try to process emotions the same way as them, it’s just healthiest to let it out in harmless ways, decide that venting and stuff should be taken just as seriously as Vulcan’s meditation time, and will encourage the Humans around them to complain about what’s upsetting them

People who are used to aloof Vulcans who avoid Humans at all cost running into one comforting a Human
