Reading into Star Trek characters on Memory Alpha, and have realised that people are sponsored when they go to the Academy. We see this with Jim in Star Trek 2009, but this implies that Bones is sponsored too? I'm going with that it's Phillip Boyce

Joyce having to turn the keys that would kill the man she loves because she has to save the kids

Joyce going to Bob and Hopper's funerals but refusing to deal with this new reality because it's too much

Joyce latching to the idea that maybe Hop is alive because they didn't find a body

Joyce knowing what her breakdown when Will went missing did to Jonathan and keeping it together even when she thinks she's right and Hopper is alive because she doesn't have proof of any of this and she has to take care of the kids first, that's what Hopper would have wanted

Joyce having so much difficulty holding all of these different realities together that she ends up not noticing that her kids are suffering from depression and hiding things from her

Joyce crying in her room alone trying to not make the kids hear to not add to their pain

Joyce composing herself and going to check on them before going to sleep because she needs to know that at least they are safe

re: this post and Kirk and Pike and their drinking habits

Kirk doesn’t seem to drink alone. At least we never see him drink alone as a captain. Aboard the ship, it’s always McCoy who brings him or pours him a drink in order to make Kirk relax. He often brings the alcohol as a comfort, as a way to make him talk. It’s almost a ritual that is always initiated by McCoy for Kirk’s own sake. McCoy does it as a friend, but he also does it from his position as Kirk’s doctor.

“Sometimes a man’ll tell his bartender things he’ll never tell his doctor.”

Pike doesn’t have anyone like that. Pike presents himself as everyone’s friend, and he makes sure it’s him who’s there for everyone, and that reflects even on the times when he’s in his own quarters talking to Una or Spock and it’s him who’s being “comforted”. At those times, it’s still Pike who plays a host and offers them a drink. For his own sake because they won’t do it for him. He pretends they’re his bartenders since that role doesn’t belong to anyone, and he needs to pour himself that drink.

Una is almost like Pike’s McCoy but not really. At times, Spock is almost like Pike’s McCoy but not really. He’s like twenty years younger than Pike and inexperienced, among other things. Neither of them have the option to question him and press him in the way that McCoy can with Kirk because neither of them can relieve him of his command. And M’Benga doesn’t seem to want that role.

Mister Spock, the man on top walks a lonely street. The chain of command is often a noose. is as real for Pike as it’s real for Kirk. Pike just has a more open personality and a way to captain the ship that make him seem less lonely on the outside.

Part 419

McCoy

McCoy sat holding Scotty’s hand for a long while before he decided his husband was truly asleep. He eased his fingers back, then stood and stretched. Scotty had been placed in a decent room, a private room he was happy to think. He’d ask for a cot to be brought in if possible. He wasn’t planning on going anywhere.

A door led to a bathroom and McCoy quietly entered it. As he washed his hands, he looked hard at himself in the mirror. His face still reflected the fear of finding out Scotty had died on the operating table. A shudder went through the prince and he gripped the sink hard for a moment.

Finally he collected himself and exited the bathroom. A quick glance at Scotty showed he hadn’t moved. He moved to the door of the room and gently opened it. Spock stood to the side engaged with a PADD.

“Just Leonard!”

McCoy looked across the hallway to a small waiting area. Jaylah had jumped to her feet, and Christine and Aporal were following suit.

Jaylah was around him a moment later.

“Can we—”

McCoy shook his head. “He’s resting.”

He realized Aporal was staring hard at him. McCoy looked over to meet the gaze. Aporal took a sharp breath, but said nothing.

“Where’s Jim?”

“He went to your room,” Spock answered.

“Right.” McCoy remembered Spock saying something about sending Jim to get clothes for them. Another memory hit the prince. “What happened to our stuff? Our bags?”

“Scotty’s is in the room sir,” Spock said with a nod of his head towards the closed door.

“Yours is here,” said Jaylah. She went back to the chairs and grabbed it. “You dropped it when you caught Montgomery Scotty.”

“Thank you,” McCoy’s voice cracked and his eyes gave a familiar prick. “And for staying all this time.”

“We aren’t going anywhere until your security team shows up,” Christine said with a fierce look in her eyes.

McCoy smiled gratefully as he glanced at Spock.

“Approximately another two hours sir.”

“You really don’t have to…”

“We do,” Aporal said firmly. “And we want to.”

McCoy nodded. He knew there was no changing the minds of their friends.

“Can we at least see him Leo? Just for our peace of mind?” Christine asked.

McCoy nodded again, slowly. He turned to open the door.

“Please don’t wake him,” he said softly. He received reassuring smiles.

McCoy stood at the window of the room with his PADD in his hand. The others had come in then retreated to the waiting area again, giving McCoy space to make a few calls. Evening was coming on. He couldn’t decide who to call first.

Francine and Granddad made more sense; they deserved to know first how Scotty was. But they would also want to speak with him wouldn’t they? McCoy hated to wake him up.

With a sigh he leaned his forehead against the cool pane of glass and hit the button to call the king.

“Leonard!”

“Shh!” McCoy said in a hushed voice. “Not so loud please. Scotty’s resting.”

David nodded on the screen.

“How are you doing?” David’s face was full of his concern for his son and son-in-law.

McCoy’s eyes pricked again and he closed them tight. “I don’t know,” he admitted.

McCoy still stood by the window after he finished talking with the king. The PADD hung in one hand and McCoy covered his face with the other. The talk with David had been good, soothing to hear the calm voice of his father. McCoy’s anxiety was beginning to calm.

“You moved.”

McCoy whipped his hand away and looked over at the bed. Scotty was looking sleepily at him, a small grin on his face.

Part 420

Robbie

Robbie had just come home from his last lecture and put his bag down when there was a knock on his and Leah's bedroom door.

"Aye?"

He was expecting to see his fiancée, so the Scotsman was all the more surprised when the door opened and Dr. Boyce stepped in. There was a serious look on the older man's face.

"Dr. Boyce?"

Robbie's voice trembled. He felt his stomach tighten in anxious anticipation. What was going on? Was something wrong with Leah?

"Would you please come with me, Robert?" The doctor's voice sounded overly cautious and Robbie couldn't exactly say that it reassured him in any way. On the contrary...

"A-aye, of course. What... what's going on?"

Slowly, the Scotsman walked to the door and Dr. Boyce put a hand on his shoulder as they left the room.

"I think the king and the princess would rather tell you."

Robbie nodded understandingly. So Leah seemed to be fine. That... that was good. It was good news.

They entered one of the large meeting rooms and Robbie was surprised to see several ministers all engaged in quiet conversation. It seemed to be a serious matter.

Many pairs of eyes fell on Robbie, but he kept his gaze fixed on Leah, who was sitting to David's right. Her gaze was sad and worried.

"Please sit down, Robert," Dr. Boyce whispered to him and the young man immediately complied. He took the empty seat next to Leah and she immediately grabbed his hand.

"What... happened?" Robbie didn't know if he was allowed to speak just like that, but he just couldn't stop himself.

David stood up from his seat and looked at everyone present.

"Today... a worrying incident has occurred on Earth. A member of Starfleet has attempted to murder my son and son-in-law."

Whispers and gasps went round the room. Robbie's heart stopped for a moment. He swallowed, his eyes wide with fear.

"My son-in-law Montgomery... was badly injured in the process."

Leah's hand squeezed Robbie's even tighter.

"He's in surgery right now and Leonard will let me know as soon as there's any news. We're in close contact with the investigating authorities and–"

Robbie wanted to listen to David. He really wanted to. But he only heard the voice muffled. The words didn't reach his mind.

Scotty was injured. Badly injured. He was in surgery, which meant he might die.

If Robbie hadn't been sitting, he would definitely have collapsed. Only Leah's presence had a comforting effect on him. She was his lifeline. She ensured that he didn't immediately burst into tears.

When the conversation ended and they left the room, Leah immediately wrapped Robbie in her arms and held him tightly.

"I'm so sorry, darling," she whispered, running her fingers through his hair.

At first Robbie tried to be strong, but eventually he could no longer hold back his sobs.

"Shh, it's okay. Scotty's strong. He will be fine."

He wanted to believe it. He really wanted to. And yet it felt like his whole world was falling apart.

It was at night when there was a knock at the door. Neither Leah nor Robbie had even tried to sleep. They had just sat on the couch, holding each other tightly.

The door opened and Robbie drew in a sharp breath as David entered the room.

For a long moment they just stared at each other, but eventually David nodded with a relieved smile on his lips.

Scotty was okay. He was alive. And Robbie couldn't help but cry once more. This time, however, because a huge load was lifted from his heart.

Leonard McCoy's Past -Fanfic Premise

Here's the plot of a new Leonard McCoy fanfic I've started to write. If anyone has any questions/further curiosities please feel free to send an ask or reply! I love this AU but struggle to find motivation when I have time, but I love to talk about it! Maybe sharing it online will encourage me to force myself to write about it more often lol. Enjoy!

Leonard and his father, David, are living on Earth, (Leonard is about 15), when Dr. David McCoy is tasked to heal a Vulcan who is really sick. Unfortunately, the Vulcan passes away, and the Vulcan's mate becomes enraged, tossing away all emotional restraint, and seeks revenge on David for being unable to save his mate. He kidnaps Leonard, and, in an effort to break the boy as well as his father, commits many forced mind melds on a helpless Leonard.

Leonard is found months later, having endured too many forced mind melds, leading him to have a fractured mind. He's unresponsive to any words, any comforting touch, and gives no sign of having any part of him left. Emotionless. Traumatized. Broken. Yet, he hasn't succumbed to complete madness, like many say should've happened after only a few mind melds, and David finds hope in it.

David contacts all of the doctors he knows who might be able to help, including Dr. Boyce, and eventually the leaders of Vulcan are made aware of the situation.

Leonard is taken to Vulcan, and goes through a long recovery process. With healing comes pain, and he soon begins to feel emotions again, yet also experiences hallucinations, nightmares, and an insanity that scares him. His mind doesn't feel like his own.

No one gives up on him, and Leonard finds himself growing close to the people who help him. He becomes close to Amanda, finding comfort in her motherly kindness, and respects Sarek, who has also decided to do whatever he can to heal the young human. Amanda introduces Leonard to common Vulcan games, like Kal-Toh, and often tells him stories of her son, even when Leonard didn't seem to listen. Sarek guides the healers, and even conducts his own healing mind melds, spending much time struggling to heal what was broken.

And David stays with his son every day, promising him that things will get better. He comforts Leonard when he begins to display signs of insanity, and holds him as Leonard screams from a nightmare. He watches his son grow up under the care of Vulcans, and becomes so proud at how his son is hanging on, yet still terrified that it wouldn't be enough. Would his son eventually be able to live in a society again? Would he live on Vulcan his whole life, or eventually continue a life on Earth?

Leonard slowly edges closer to the person he was before, piecing together the parts of his mind that were broken, regaining the memories that were ripped from him. Yet he still struggles. He still hears the evil Vulcan in his head, telling him what to do, that he can't trust anyone. It's a constant battle, and it takes him years until he can live a semi-normal life.

Eventually, he gets better. He's able to attend school, he's able to live a normal life without a totally fractured mind. Yet it's always felt weak, and nightmares often plagued him. He often has to visit Vulcan for occasional healing mind melds, to keep his mind from breaking apart once more.

Leonard becomes a doctor, like his father. He defies the pain and trauma that defined him as a child, and continues to heal others, controlling his mind when it tried to break, and uses emotions to cover up the fear that he would lose his mind again.

He meets Jim, but chooses to keep the information of his past to himself, too afraid to appear weak. He meets Spock, and is fearful at first, because all Vulcans scare him before he gets to know them. Yet, after the destruction of Vulcan, Leonard soon finds friendship with Spock, as both mourn the planet, and those on it. It's through Amanda's gift of a Kal-Toh set that Spock hears Leonard's history of mind-melds, and the two learn to trust each other like brothers.

Jim will learn of the forced mind melds eventually, but that reveal will be a lot messier.

This got a lot longer than I planned...but those are a lot of the plot points I want to for sure touch on. I love talking about this AU, so if anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask them! Thanks for reading my ideas/rant!

There is even a owl in Joyce's room after Bob dies because the owls are a symbol of Vecna's victims since season 1 (we see them in Will's room, for Barb when they show her pictures at her parents house etc etc Max with the owl sticker at the counsellor), plus they have lover's lake framed behind because it's a lovers scene between Joyce and Hopper that are supporting each other

Also interesting that Jim is framed directly under the owl, it could be foreshadowing for his fake death the next season

With Max Edie (Lizard) on vocals and Jim Dickson on guitar, this is Epic's cover of the Monkees  Boyce & Hart penned "I Wanna Be Free".It was pencilled in to appear on issue 7 of What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen back in 1987 under the band name The Lizards. Also this Officer’s Manual...

let’s ignore their dates because they’re off from what’s common now, for example Kirk being born in 2229 (still in March, but on the 26th) and the 5ym being finished in 2265 (when Kirk was promoted to an admiral at the ripe age of 36 - I wanted to laugh at this, then I realized that it was 37 in canon, so................)

let’s also ignore the factual mistakes (like the manual is like Kirk was the only one of two witnesses on Tarsus IV, and like that obviously isn’t true. So I’m just gonna handpick a few stuff that fit my personal interpretation) and there’s a lot of them, and the fat phobia

but, the manual also assumes that Kirk did the survey on Tyree’s planet under Garrovick. Which like thanks. After Farragut they have him serve on USS Alexander (which I guess I could use as a name since I’m bad with naming things) - where he was the XO, the captain was killed and he assumed command, and at the age of 30 he became the captain of the Enterprise - which funnily enough actually does fit, more or less, even though I prefer 31 (in my personal timeline)

BUT the manual says his father is deceased (the profile says Kirk is 36, so in the manual it would be after the 5ym ended, but I’m gonna assume it’s been a while, and thanks. Good to know that when only TOS was around Kirk’s father was supposed to be dead because that’s my hc and reading.)

“His chief psychological problem is the expression of normal human emotions, which he finds almost impossible due to the barrier that he has constructed between himself and his crew.” - Like, while I wouldn’t necessarily word it exactly this way, yes. I did say in the past that the reason why I think Spock understands Kirk is because Kirk like Spock fights “two halves” of himself - sometimes to an unhealthy degree.

he’s 40 (at the end of 5ym), which means 4 years older than Kirk, and I like this age gap (I kind of feel that when people don’t use the AOS years of births, they only have two years between them, and I personally am not a fan of just two years). Funnily enough that also fits with what’s established today (his age at the end of 5ym). But I hate when it used to be common to give Kirk and Spock the same birthday just because the actors were born on the same day. I’m glad current canon took care of that. It doesn’t even make sense because of TWOK, I wanted to say, but TWOK was two years after this manual kasdhsjdfhjsdhfj (I mean it’s fun to see what was a thing before something else changed it on screen)

Sarek, retired Ambassador and physicist, age 105. Love the physicist thing. But “retired” is fun.

“After eight months as the director of The Vulcan Science Academy, Spock elected to become a candidate for the kolinahr.” oooooooh, this is cool, and literally could be employed in fics without messing with canon.

The manual says that Xtmprszntwlfd has 6 syllables (how) He also apparently has a patronymic “Sareku” okay

the manual is like McCoy applied to Starfleet at the age of 27 (hello AOS, it’s 28 there though) and spent two years at the Academy studying space medicine. 

What they write about McCoy is similar to what I hc, he served on a ship (USS Hood), got into an argument with CMO, transferred to surgeon’s general office, did “cultural observations” on several planets, then he asked for a ship duty, got assigned to the Enterprise after Boyce died, as a replacement surgeon, and after a few years he took over Piper. Which also means that my hc that McCoy was actually on board during the first pilot is not weird lol 

Both parents are deceased, no siblings.

......... also apparently whoever wrote the manual thought that McCoy would get together with the woman from Mudd’s Passion he told about how he saved everyone’s lives on the Enterprise while under an influence (that woman didn’t even have a name on screen ffs)......... I wish this manual didn’t introduce me to the existence of this episode.

Probably gonna pick the “important” stuff (for me) and make a normal post, connecting them to my headcanon and fitting it within my personal timeline that follows modern dates. 

In any case, I think this officer’s manual is a fan thing, but it’s still fun imho because it’s a nice look into the past. And tbh I had more fun reading these profiles than I did with anything “official”. But mostly because a lot of the info is quite similar to my own inner universe. I’m just like 40 years too late...
