(For @jilytoberfest’s Prompt 28: “Tell me a story”)
It’s nearly the 28th where I am, but I realise that’s probably not the case for most of you. Sorry!
“Tell me a story,” Harry muttered, so softly that only Mary could hear. The throng of Christmas customers in The Leaky Cauldron half suffocated the sound. “Of them. Tell me a story about them.”
Mary took a deep breath. What could she possibly say? Where could she possibly start? This boy had seen horrors she could scarce imagine. He was put on a pedestal in their world for ridding it of its worst enemy. And yet… he still chose comfort in the arms of his family.
Even if those arms were mere stories built on imperfect memories.
“What would you like to know?” she asked.
What was appropriate to say? He was only nineteen, only a child really.
“Everything…” He took a gulp of butterbeer, looking so much older than James ever got to be. “But I’ll settle for something nice.”
“Something nice?”
“Yeah.”
But that would be doing them a disservice. Lily and James Potter were never nice, nothing even close to nice. In the early days, they were vicious, as awful to each other as two teenagers could be. Cruel and vindictive and spiteful.
But then they were magnificent. Awe-inspiring. Ethereal. As bright as Venus in a clear sky.
Somehow everyone knew the moment she’d led him to that dance floor that they’d walk each other down the aisle. Somehow everyone knew that that baby would be as loved as it was ever possible to be. And somehow, when they passed, everyone knew they’d be cruelly taunted by the Potters and their love for the rest of their lives.
Sirius. Remus. Peter. Mary. The ones left had all searched desperately for a little bit of Lily and James in their own ravenous ways.
How could one ever sum up all that in a way that was nice?
“She used to doodle his name in her Potions book,” Mary replied finally, only half recollecting the fact.
Harry smiled, looking a lot more like her when he did.
“Yeah?” he chuckled.
“Yeah, with little snitches. Strange woman! Practically covered the thing.”
He laughed, a big hearty laugh that Mary suspected carried something he wasn’t willing to share.
“I suppose that’s not exactly a nice thing, though, right?”
Because hadn’t it been obsessive? Childlike? A sign of Lily’s desperate yearning in those moments when the embers had started but the fire hadn’t quite yet roared.
But would there ever truly be words to describe the love that followed?
“No. No, it is. It’s very nice!”
Mary guessed nice was subjective. But for her, it would always be too insignificant of a word to describe Lily and James Potter.

favourite; a jilytober microfic
For @jilytoberfest week 2 microfic prompt: lips.
Read under the cut or on AO3!
Lily rolls on her back, giggling. “How am I meant to answer that?”
“Truthfully,” James suggests, flopping onto the bed beside her. Lily shakes her head.
“I don’t know!”
“How could you not know?” he exclaims, rolling on top of her. She breathes raggedly. “I thought of a dozen things for you!”
“That was cheating,” Lily manages, trying to calm herself. “It’s meant to be your favourite thing, not your top ten.”
“Fine. My answer’s ‘all of you’. What’s yours?” He ruffles his hair, a suggestion. Lily narrows her eyes.
“Fine. Lips.” He raises an eyebrow.
“Lips?”
“Mmhm.”
“Well, then.”

"Is that my jumper?"
"Is that my jumper?" Prompt #4 of @magic-girl-in-a-muggle-world 's prompts for @jilytoberfest
Rated: K+
“All right is that everything?” Lily asked her dormmates, huffing as she began to lug the wicker basket full of winter sweatclothes towards the doorway.
“This has got to be a first right?” Marlene reached for one of the handles of the basket, helping Lily shoulder the load of freshly folded laundry, “I mean, the elves have never mixed up our things before.”
“First time for everything I s’pose,” Lily shrugged as they trudged down the spiral staircase to the Gryffindor common room.
Her jaw dropped when she surveyed the room, “What are you–”
“Oh this hot little number?” Sirius sauntered up in a golden knit at least two sizes too small, striking a pose in front of the girls before turning to walk back down his imaginary runway, “Oh my name’s Lily and I’m so cute and small.” His voice increased in pitch as he teased.
Lily and Marlene let their basket thud to the floor.
“You cannot be-”
“Sirius? Oh come on think it looks better on him than it does on you,” James Potter moved across the common room down the invisible catwalk, “Whaddya think?” Lily’s gray sweater vest fit snugly across the contours of his broad chest and exposed his abdomen, both of which made the fact that he was stretching out her cashmere Christmas gift much more tolerable. “I personally think it’s quite flattering, it really brings out my forearms.”
“Is that… my jumper?”
“Actually I think we’re keeping these ones,” Sirius called back towards them.

"I've never really been a fan of pumpkin"
James entered the empty Charms classroom cautiously, unsure how his presence would be received. Unconsciously, he reached up to muss his hair before he cleared his throat and asked, "Alright, Evans?"
He could see Lily's shoulders heave with a sigh, which wasn’t the reaction he'd been hoping for, but at least she turned around to look at him. "I'm fine, Potter. You didn't have to come find me."
"Of course I did." He took two steps towards her but stopped before she was within arm's reach, his fingers twitching at his side. After that lukewarm greeting, he certainly wasn't going to touch her unless she gave him a clear sign that she wanted him to. "We're partners."
Lily's lips quirked in a self-deprecating smile. "That's part of why I'm so angry." Ouch, James thought, but then she clarified, "With myself, I mean. In my position, I can't afford to sink to their level."
James actually rocked back on his heels. "What? You did nothing wrong!"
Something like a chuckle slipped out of Lily's mouth. "I'm not sure Dumbledore agrees. Less than a week into term and the Head Girl gets into a food fight."

The polaroid
(For @jilytoberfest, prompt #1, smile!)
The camera had been a gift Sirius had bought himself in a Muggle store to supposedly celebrate the end of the term, but so far James hadn’t seen Sirius take one photo from himself. Rather, Sirius was motioning people, arranging them in funny poses, having the time of his life.
"Sirius looks like a director," said an amused voice next to James; Lily had just thrown herself on the couch next to him.
James tried to ignore the way his heart raced.
"Director?"
"Movie director," she explained, watching him with the same amusement. "You know, those Muggle animated photos I told you about?"
"Oh, sure. Cinema."
Lily smiled; her smile was brighter than the flashes of the camera as far as James was concerned.
"Everyone seems to love it."
James blinked. "What?"
She moved her hand, showing around. "The Polaroid." Lily chuckled. "It’s funny how wizards have moving photos and yet a Polaroid is making everyone crazy to take a picture."
"Well," started James. Lily was looking at him and that made something as normal as thinking more difficult in his brain. "Wizarding pictures take time to develop. There is something even more magical in seeing your picture right after it's taken."
"I guess--and at least you know sooner if you looked horrible in the photo."
Her tone was teasing, an open invitation to join him in her joke and yet James found himself saying: "I don’t think you could look horrible in any photo, Evans."
There was a moment of silence; Lily’s eyes glinted under another flash, and then it hit James what he had just said.
"I mean," he started hurriedly before she could say anything, "Sirius is a great director, have you seen the photo he took from Remus and Sir Nicholas? It looks as if Remus is a ghost, it was the perfect timing, the head was almost falling--"
His voice died, painfully aware he was just babbling; luckily, after a long second, Lily just let out a laugh.
"Yeah, it was a funny photo," she agreed.
James breathed again. "As you said, Sirius is a director. He should do a movie."
She bit her lower lip; that was very distracting.
"Have you ever seen one?"
"What?"
"A movie."
"No--we almost went during the winter break, but then we missed it."
"Oh, that’s fine." She breathed deeply, then looked around almost distractedly. "The best movies are out in the summer anyway. We should see one."
James wished he could answer that, but he had definitely lost his ability to speak. Was this... Evans couldn't... had she...
It seemed a lot like she had just proposed they went out in a date this summer, and James needed to ask her about this, he couldn’t keep wondering...
But the moment he turned at her, there was a distraction in the shape of Sirius.
"Smile!" He cried, and there was just time enough for Lily to put her arms around James' shoulder before the flash of light blinded James.
He blinked, trying to see through the dark spots in his eyes, but by the time his vision returned, Lily had already stood up, taking the camera from Sirius' hand.
Her face was flushed as she fanned herself with the developing photo.
James braced himself again to ask her what he must, but once more he was interrupted.
"Here," said Lily, giving him the picture. "We don’t look so terrible together."
And with a wink, she departed.
James looked at the photo. They were both smiling, though his smile looked dizzy, as if he had just been hit by a bludger; and Lily -- she wasn’t staring at the photographer, but rather at him. With her arm around his shoulder and the way she was smiling, a bit nervous but also certain, it almost looked as if they were a couple...
James had to agree with her. They didn’t look terrible together at all.

Chapter 22
He’s tempted to kiss her there and then but he stops himself. He has to really glue his feet to the floor but his brain is screaming at him to not screw this up.
She looks so cosy and comfy, her hair falling down her chest naturally this time, with no fake curls in sight, it looks fluffy and almost slept on. She’s wearing leggings and a crop top, her pink fluffy slippers make him smile. She looks like home.
She squeezes his hand back to life, making him zero in on her eyes once again.

Chapter 18
He’s pulling into the car park at the stadium when he sees her again. Shock reverberates through his body, an ominous chill travels down his spine. He pulls into his spot, and climbs out, lugging his training bag over his shoulder.
It’s the day of the friendly match, against a local team so they’re playing at the other team's stadium. It’s smaller and less obnoxious, he prefers it to their stadium - in which he would definitely not have been able to bump into Lily at.

Chapter 16
He asks to meet at the coffee shop that Remus’ manages. It’s small enough that they won’t be interrupted by his fans, and with Remus behind the counter - he can always throw a look his mate’s way if he’s stuck.
He looks down at the two coffees in front of him, the cocoa dusted across Lily’s looks more appetising than his black coffee.
“Hey,” her voice interrupts him from his wigging out. She says it softly enough that it doesn’t surprise him; instead, her voice warms his insides. She’s wearing a green woolen coat, a familiar-looking red scarf is wrapped around her neck. Her hair is in a stylish knot, strands of red hair fall out, making James want to pull them and twist them around his finger.

We'll be a fine line update
I haven't edited chapter 16 yet and I'm not sure if I'll have time but please bear with me! I think I'm already a day behind, but I figured it could pose as a period of catching up on your reading anyway.
Thank you for reading it and loving it so far! It's been really fun to write and reading your comments gives me something little to look forward to every day.
