Getting caught staring
answer to @jilytoberfest prompt: getting caught staring
read on ao3 / ffn
Abigail made her way across the grass under the hot, late-afternoon sunshine, the oppressive heat making the air vibrate as she neared the football field. She smiled at the redhead sprawled out not far away, her school bag laying next to her, but got no response. Puzzled, she followed the direction of her friend's gaze to the field, where a sweaty, bespectacled boy was running, his shirt pulled up by the hem while he wiped at his face. Comprehension immediately dawned on her.
“You should stare harder,” she said, by way of greeting.
Lily started at the interruption, abruptly pulled out of her thoughts. Her face flushed red as she finally registered Abigail’s presence.
“Piss off,” she mumbled, looking much like a child caught with her hand in the cookie jar.
“No, really, you’re being far too subtle. Try panting,” Abigail quipped.
This garnered a simple, “I hate you."
She sat down, pulling her bag onto her lap. "I brought Maltesers."
"I love you very much."
Abigail snorted as she dropped a couple sweets into Lily's outstretched hand.
"So, what's happening?" she asked.
"Good question," Lily said through a mouthful, her gaze homing back in on Potter like a tracking missile. "Stay curious."
"For someone who attends every game and virtually every practice, you're awfully ignorant about the actual game being played."
"I don't attend every practice. I just happen to be getting some fresh air in the vicinity of the field around the same time practices tend to be scheduled."
"You also happen to sound like a psychopath."
"I'm not stalking him or anything."
Abigail snorted. "Why would you feel the need to specify that unless–"
“Here, have a treat,” Lily said, shoving a handful of Maltesers into her friend’s mouth. The brunette had the gall to continue laughing through the mouthful, though she choked slightly on the rapidly melting chocolate, which Lily considered a win, albeit a small one.
A yelled warning drew their attention away from their squabble and to the ball soaring through the air, incidentally flying right at them. In the split second they had to register that it was headed for Abigail's face, the ball suddenly lurched to the side, as though snagged by an invisible hook, and dropped to the grass at Lily's feet, rolling to a gentle stop in front of her.
No one noticed the almost imperceptible flick of Lily's finger as the ball veered off its course, though Abigail didn't need to see it to know what had happened.
They barely had a chance to catch their breaths before Colum came running up to them, taking the ball Lily handed him with a perfunctory thanks and turning to Abigail.
"You alright?" he asked.
"Peachy," she answered.
Colum was looking a little pink. "Wow, that was weird," he added. "The way it just... moved, like that."
"Gust of wind, probably." Abigail rooted through the small red bag for another sweet, not looking up.
"Right. That makes sense." Colum shifted from foot to foot, trying desperately to make eye contact.
"Did you need anything else?"
"Nope, just picking the ball up."
Abigail finally looked up and stated, "Well, make sure to have him home by 9."
This last statement, made with a completely straight face, threw poor Colum completely for a loop. His eyes darted pleadingly to Lily, as though she might explain to him the mysterious depths of women’s minds, or at least Abigail’s.
Lily wasn’t much help as she coughed into her arm, trying to hide the mirth on her face. "She's just kidding," she choked out, reemerging. "Thanks, Colum."
Taking the hint, he nodded and walked away, kicking the ball in front of him. The two girls watched him go, trying their damndest not to dissolve into giggles while he was within earshot.
Feeling someone’s gaze on her, Lily glanced at the field, where James was already looking at her. You ok? he mouthed. She smiled back, nodding. He grinned, miming wiping sweat off his brow.
Crisis averted, the two girls sat quietly, Abigail going through Lily’s bag in search of the English assignment, while the redheaded football aficionado watched the players with ferocious intensity.
"God, I love sports."
Abigail looked up from the notebook she was leafing through and watched as James jogged backwards, making faces at Lily.
"I'm sure 'sports' will be thrilled to hear that,” she said, turning back to her papers.

Jily One Shots - Cinderella? (on Wattpad) https://my.w.tt/yJDk1zY0T9
~COMPLETED~ Even though these are one-shots, they're in order so it's a bit like a story. It starts at the beginning of the seventh year where James has matured and Lily notices. Publishing when I can Somehow was ranked first in Jily for a bit, who knows how The cover/fanart was done by Upthehillart, I don't know them or anything, found this on the internet but I would like to give them credit and it's an amazing artwork! J.K Rowling owns all the characters and settings.

dating Young James Potter headcanons
- you cuddling by the fire laying on top of him in the early hours of the morning fiddling with each other's fingers and talking about anything and everything.
- falling asleep in this position and waking up to see the marauders crowded around you. Sirius smirking, Remus hurrying around looking for an extra blanket and a small smile on Peter's face as he watched you guys silently.
- sneaking out of balls together and running through the halls hand in hand with giggles erupting out of your mouths every second, jumping through the columns and proceeded to lay on the grass and stare at the stars.
- him writing and singing you songs he intentionally wrote badly and jokingly singing them to you every single time you pass each other in the hall, but late at night he plays you the real ones about how he really feels.
- you're on the y/h/n quidditch teamevery single time you play a game versing each other or playing another house together, when he passes you, he always manages to sing-speak 'the greeeeatest chaser, the greeeatest boyfriend'.
- hazy disposable camera pictures of slightly glazed eyes, intertwined hands and half smiles caught by surprise.
- him rubbing your shoulders and kissing your neck softly when you’re stressed about exams.
- him carrying you through the halls during your study break to head to the kitchens and grab you some food because 'you're tired and hungry and working way too hard so the least I could do is distract you and give you sustenance.'
- he barely ever gets stressed, but when he does it's bad. Playing with his hair and rubbing circles on his scalp when he's stressed, and he leans back into you and you say 'it'll be alright love'. and he mumbles an incoherent reply, enjoying how gentle you are with him. That's all he's ever secretly wanted, gentle.

Lily’s Thoughts
“Hey Evans!” This was almost always how it started. He would ask me out, I would either say no and walk away or say no and start yelling at him. It depended on the situation. For example, I learned a long time ago to never start yelling during a lesson and to instead whisper “no” forcefully and send a death glare at him.
—————Flashback—————
It was the middle of our third year of Hogwarts during a Potions lesson. Professor Slughorn decided our partners for the potion we made that day (a simple Swelling Solution, nothing important) and, as luck would have it, I got stuck with James Potter. The most egotistical of all the Marauders and the one who had made it his mission in life to annoy me as much as possible in various ways such as pranking me and recently, asking me to Hogsmeade.
As soon as he came over to the station we would be sharing I informed him that “There will be no funny business Potter. Despite the fact that some may not care about their grades, I do and I will not have my grade ruined by you of all people.”
“Chill Evans, I would never want to hurt your grades” he said sarcastically.
“Good to know. Now, I need you to first –“
We began working and to my surprise he actually helped out and knew how to make the potion. While it was stewing I told him “Wow Potter, I’m surprised you were able to make this potion considering you don’t do any schoolwork.”
“Well I don’t need to do the schoolwork. I already understand it and I’m just going to play professional Quidditch anyway. Besides, we both know you only want me for my body” he said with a wink.
“Never in a million years will I want you Potter. Now how about you sit down, shut up, and listen to what I say for once. I. DON’T. LIKE. YO- Uh-oh.” The Swelling Solution picked that exact time to boil over and Professor Slughorn had just come over to stop us fighting, so all three of us got Swelling Solution all over ourselves.
“I’m so sorry Professor, Potter just-“ I started to apologize when he cut in.
“It wasn’t me Professor, Evans was-“ What? I hadn’t done a thing!
“It was all him, he-“ I tried to explain.
“It’s not my fault that-“ Just as I was about to explain that, yes, it was his fault Professor Slughorn spoke up.
“Stop. Both of you, detention, tonight, 7:00, here in the dungeons. And I expect this kind of behavior out of you Mr. Potter, but you Miss Evans? This is quite a change from the brilliant girl I’ve come to know.”
—————End Flashback—————
The moral of that story was that yelling in class got me detention (the first one of my Hogwarts career) and covered in half-brewed Swelling Solution, causing me to go to the Hospital Wing for the first time since I had fallen off my broom during our flying classes in first year. All because James Potter had to make me mad at him.
The whole school knows about his “love” for me. Merlin knows there have been many occasions when he has proclaimed it in front of everybody. There’ve been multiple serenades at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, banners hung on the wall in the Great Hall, and many more “declarations.” I don’t believe one word of it. If he does love me as much as he says he does he wouldn’t confess it in front of everyone. He would say it to me in private after a romantic, candlelit date after which – no, I won’t go there. This leads me to believe that he can’t love me, he just loves the idea of the chase and saying yes will just end up breaking my heart. Although I wish- no, it can never be.

This is the first fanfiction I ever wrote over a year ago. Finally got around to putting it up here

The Fourth Crimson Sky
The Fourth Crimson Sky
I started a Jily fanfiction!
Summary: James was vaguely aware that the sky outside his window produced a bright crimson. He could have thought of blood. He could have thought of the fate right before him. His last thought, at the end, was of Lily’s smile.

im a little high off of my last update, so here, have a snippet of the next chapter of royal invasion:
She levels a hostile glare at James, whose shoulders seem to curve inwards with what she hopes is shame. "Say something, damn it!"
At her outburst, James flinches slightly, colour rising in his cheeks.
"I have an explanation... but you're not going to like it," he says at last.
"That's for me to decide," she replies coolly, crossing her arms over her chest.

Royal Invasion – Chapter IX: Well Suited
Long-overdue—but here’s the next chapter of Royal Invasion!!
I have this entire story planned in my head from beginning to end, but taking the time to write it is so hard. Either way, it’s all worth it when I see all your comments and kudos :)
See below the cut for a sneak peek into start of this chapter!
Lily sleeps beautifully.
A calming, dreamless slumber that allows her to get some well-needed rest.
She wakes to the sunlight dancing on her face, which is new. She finds that she loves it. With a soundless yawn, she cracks open her eyes... and frowns.
Why am I on the floor?
She traces the gold-studded patterns on her ceiling with her eyes, following them to the trim on the curtains and then down the length of the large wall of windows. Her hands grip the plush carpet, her fingers sifting the fibres.
She turns to the side and almost lets out an unladylike yelp. This cannot be happening.
But of course, there is James—a couple of metres away, as would be proper—but there, nevertheless. His folded hands cradle his head, resting on top of the pillow. The blankets are bunched up closer to his legs, tangled in his long limbs. His face looks quiet—that was the only word to describe it. The lack of energy jars her. The James she knows always has something to say—a laugh crinkling at the edge of his eyes or even a worried crease forming between his brows. But now, bereft of consciousness, he looks foreign and unknown.

Royal Invasion - Chapter VII: Kingdom Before Self
FINALLY updated the next chapter of Royal Invasion just prior to the end of Jilytober. I was going to wait until tomorrow, but October 31st is too sad, so here’s the chapter one day early!
Let me know your thoughts and Happy Jilytober! (Snippet below the cut):
Lily's fork clangs back to her plate. There's a slight buzzing in her ears as she stares open-mouthed at Petunia. She swings her gaze between her sister and Vernon, hoping and praying that this is some kind of joke. That someone is playing a joke on her. Maybe James will pop out from behind Vernon's chair and yell, "Suprise!"
James. Oh god, he knew. He knew, and he came to her room to tell her. And she'd completely dismissed him. And if he didn't know, how could she possibly tell him?
Vernon clears his throat, and she realises that she's gone completely silent.
"You can't possibly be serious," she chokes out, her grip tightening on the tablecloth.
"Of course we're serious," Vernon tells her. "It's about time you got married."

“Lily,” He whined, “I hate horror movies, can’t I just stay here. I came because you asked! I’m here can’t that just be enough?”
She tried not to focus on the drop in her stomach. She should have expected he’d refuse, so she shouldn’t dwell on the disappointment.
“Fine,” Lily stood back and pushed off the car. “Stay there, and have a shit time by yourself when you could be cuddling with me. Honestly, just suit your bloody self.” She turned to Sirius and indicated back over her shoulder James, “You deal with him.”
Sirius watched Lily walk around to the back of the car, where she stopped to chat with Marlene and Dorcas who were curled up together in a love seat bean bag. She was gesturing back toward the car in a way that made James sure she was talking about him.
“Smooth mate,” Sirius brought James’ attention back to him. “Way to show her your manly side.”
“She’s seen me duel Death Eaters, win Quidditch matches. I open jars for her. How much manlier can one get?”
Sirius gave him a flat look, “Enjoy your snacks, Prongs. I’ll go cuddle your girlfriend for you in the scary bits.”
Just sharing a favourite moment from Friday Night Frights.
Excited to write more of Part 2 with @midnightelite tomorrow 😍😍😍

Cliche
Chapter 10:  With a little help from my friends
Read it on AO3: The Cliche? James' friends help get things back on track
Preview:
After his exit, the boys just sat and looked at each other for a minute.
“Shall we?” Sirius asked, eyebrows raised.
“After you,” Peter nodded.
“I’ll get the map,” Remus offered.
A quick check revealed their target had just finished dinner, and as per her custom of late, was headed to the library, alone. The boys worked quickly and decamped to the first floor, popping out of a passageway behind the Head Girl.

when's the next update of it was meant to be? love love love the story!
Hi, thank you so much! I’m so glad you’re enjoying it haha
As for the next update, I’m not particularly sure. I’ve been working on the next chapter a lot but I still have 3-4 more scenes to write AND edit. I don’t like giving an exact date for updates because I don’t want to disappoint; I hope it’s soon though!
