Highlights of the 2021/2022 season - JGP Courchevel I and II
Skate America is next week. We’re past the first quarter of the season (yes the season starts with JGP, yall who think otherwise are wrong), and I thought I’d do a brief recap of the various highlights of this period. Good and bad. Amazing performances and dubious music choices, WTF costumes and sometimes everything together.
Hanna Lim/Ye Quan’s RD to Gangnam Style
youtube
So far watching Junior Rhythm dances has been more rewarding then watching Seniors. It doesn’t feel nearly as cringy, some truly original choices. The Junior Korean pair are a pretty good exemple, with their banger of a RD to… Gangnam Style. And it works! It’s great and entertaining and just what I needed to start the season.
Maya Benkiewics and Nicolas Heinault’s costumes for their FD
Sorry for the low quality screenshot. A very young pair, a bit messy still but endearing, but that’s not the point. The point is, WTF are they wearing? Why those costumes? They are skating to a strange mix of Polovtsian Dances and Russian Sailor Song. I mean I get the blue stripes with the whole sailor thing but why is the boy wearing only half a sailor costume, and half a black jacket? And why did the choreographer feel the need to include Polovtsian Dances into this mess?
Regina Garcia de Leon Saab’s Amélie FS
youtube
A junior skater to watch out for. I don’t think she has all her triples yet (jumped 2F and 2Lz iirc), but she has good skating skills for her age. Is fast going into the jumps, and has very decent lines and musicality.
Seojeon Ji paying tribute to both Mao Asada and Yuna Kim by skating to Dance Macabre in the short, and Rach n°2 in the free
Ahsun Yun’s stunning dress for her FS to the Mummy
Kaiya Ruiter’s serene presence on the ice. Arms and upper body still need work, but the way she glides across the ice, her footwork is a joy to watch. Her Opportunities SP suits her very well and showcases her best qualities.
youtube
Arlet Levandi making history and earning Estonia’s first ever JGP medal, and skating to the best Carmen version there is which is of course, Stromae’s
youtube
Casper Johansson’s wonderful FS to Narnia. I have no idea why it is not popular among juniors because the Narnia OSTs are absolute bangers.
youtube
Muse’s I Belong To You proving to be the winning music choice as both Welsey Chiu and the Brown siblings skated to it and won.

Thoughts on Courchevel 1
The first JGP event was a hot mess, as usual. Especially the junior men. The women actually did pretty well, for the most part. Ahsun Yun and Seoyeon Ji both won the costume competition. They were both so well-dressed. I really liked Ahsun’s FS to The Mummy. It was a good but unique choice, and she had a fantastic skate after a rough short. Kaiya Ruiter surprised me. She’s quite juniorish, but in a good way. She’s a solid performer and held up really well under pressure, so hopefully she can lead Canadian women’s skating over the next few years. Clare Seo and Lindsay Thorngren are so different: Clare’s very artistic with solid skating skills, while Linday’s more technically minded. But they both did really well here. Clare got nailed with a few URs, and Lindsay really delivered with her jumps to get the gold medal. But they’re both really talented and I’m excited to see where they go.
The men were... pretty much a disaster, as I feared. The last two skates in the free were particularly rough. It’s probably because Courchevel is like a zillion miles above sea level and everyone was exhausted. Ilia Malinin had a fantastic short (although that cover of Billie Jean needs to die) and a spectacular morning practice, landing 4 different types of quads. His free was not nearly as solid: a fall on a quad sal, a popped quad toe, and a popped triple loop off of a triple lutz. He looked so tired. Corey Circelli started off well in the short, but his free skate was hard to watch. Lots of falls. I am happy for Francois Pitot and Lucas Broussard. Both of them don’t have the huge tech content of a lot of the Russian and Japanese men, so they managed to rise to the occasion here with solid skates to take JGP medals.
Also, shoutout to Katarina Wolfkostin and Jeffrey Chen, who dominated ice dance

When will we know who is competing at each JGP event? Also have the schedules/locations for each of those events been released yet or is that later?
Thanks for asking!
JGPs are a different kettle of fish from the Senior GPs, in that they’re not assigned the same way. Generally, we only find out who is at what Junior GP when the entries close for each event. So we find out in a very staggered fashion, usually about three weeks before each JGP. (This can be quite fun!)
To a degree, however, some will be more or less known - there are only four of the seven events, for example, that can take pairs. So all the Junior pairs will be at those events.
We do have the schedule and location for the JGP series!
August 21-27: JGP AUSTRALIA!!! (Brisbane, Australia)
August 28-September 3: JGP Austria (Salzburg, Austria)
September 4-10: JGP Latvia (Riga, Latvia)*
September 18-24: JGP Belarus (Minsk, Belarus)*
September 25-October 1: JGP Croatia (Zagreb, Croatia)*
October 2-8: JGP Poland (Gdansk, Poland)*
October 9-15: JGP Italy (Egna/Bolzano, Italy)
December 7-10: JGP Final (with Senior GP Final, Japan)
The events marked with a * are the pairs events. Curiously, there is also no JGP France (Courchevel) this year, which is unusual as this has been a traditional fixture on the JGP calendar for many years.
For the last two seasons the ISU has live-streamed these events for free on Youtube, and I imagine that will continue this season.
