Entry 2 - Your preparedness for an internship: your skills (and skills gap), and the importance of a resume and cover letter with respect to the current status of your own documents.
505 words
Throughout my years volunteering at sporting event through Melbourne United and Basketball Victoria, I have been able to create and grow connections, be open-minded and be flexible when it comes to different professional situations. I have also learnt how to be a leader and work on my decision-making skills from my time doing my diploma course. I have worked in casual retail sales jobs for the past 2 years, which has helped with my customer service, communication and problem-solving skills and my patience towards customers, peers and when doing my assessments. During my time already completing an internship at Basketball Victoria, I have learnt to work on my personal demeanour, what I wear, how I approach certain situations and my communication, organisation and confidence have also improved whilst working within the participation department at Basketball Victoria. I have also been able to work on my time management, dedication, reliability and teamwork when juggling my three main commitments in work, study and my current internship.
When it comes to applying for jobs and internships, a resume is an important element that goes into the process. The information that goes into resumes assist the recruiters with their assessment and reviews on applicants (Su et al. 2015). This means that everything that you put in whether it’s experiences, education, volunteer work, skills, interests, contact details or references needs to be accurate and relevant. When it comes to resumes, I have made plenty in the past but none of them were at a high standard. I had never included all of my experiences whether it was work or volunteering and the information that goes with each. This is something that I had lacked and never really added what was needed. As shown below (Laurenson, 2023), I haven’t included my volunteer work, which consists of 7 years of volunteering, there are no references listed and there is a have a photo of me on it. These are all things I need to add and subtract from my resume to start applying for jobs and internships.

When it comes to cover letters, I haven’t had the motivation to make a cover letter, as I have always gotten a job that didn’t require me to add one. This reduced the amount of jobs I was applying for and securing, as I wasn’t putting in a bit more effort to address my interest in the job. This mindset has obviously now changed, as all the jobs and internships that I will be applying for may be future career opportunities and not just casual retail jobs that I needed to have to gain some extra money. According to Mathews (2018), sometimes cover letters can be more interesting than resumes, as they are new information pieces that an applicant uses to introduce their experiences and how those experiences relate to the job their applying for. Which is why I need to start practicing and creating cover letters for each and every job or internship I apply for and this subject should help me do so.

Entry 2: Your Preparedness for an Internship
Tumblr media
Throughout my experience at university and at work I have gained an immense amount of skills and knowledge in a range of areas. I have gained a lot of skills from my multiple jobs and used these to my benefit in assignments and in real world use. This includes copywriting for social media content and article posting, visual content creation and editing with Photoshop and Premiere Pro as well as Canva. I have also crafted live broadcasting content with online television programs and live sporting events, through live streaming softwares like StreamLabs, OBS & LiveU. Furthermore, I have worked for News Corp Australia in an editing role for their Logue Down Basketball Podcast with Matt Logue and Chris Anstey. One area of improvement in skills that I would like to learn is working in high pressure situations and also presenting to a group of people or being in front of a camera. Due to my anxiety, when I get placed in front of a camera or a group of people I tend to stutter and not think through my words correctly, but when I am able to plan accordingly going into it and can expect things to happen (usually through practice and experience), I can excel and make great decisions through that pressure. I am good at multitasking and learning on the job, so when it comes down to it, I am easily able to make split decisions that can help with any problems and can communicate with ease to accommodate any person in the team.
A cover letter can sometimes become more important than a resume to an employer. “It's a blank canvas for the candidate to showcase themselves. They can talk about their wider experiences.” (Mathew, 2018). A cover letter allows you to showcase how your unique skills can relate to the role that you are applying for and gives you the opportunity to elaborate on your work experience before an interview. For instance, with my cover letter, I am able to explain the importance of some of the roles I have undertaken and how important the volunteer work is on my resume. In the current status of my resume, I had to link the different experiences and skills from my jobs to the current role I was applying for. Creating a cover letter allowed me to exemplify the skills in these jobs and how I can translate these into the new role.

Importance of being Internship Ready
I feel I am confident for my internship and feel well prepared, whilst also being aware of things I need to improve on such as being over confident. I have a basic level resume that I am seeking to improve upon with this subject, as well as learn how to best write a cover letter to include key words that the employer wants to read.
With my work experience I have had, naturally I have had multiple job interviews in the past and am confident going into each one. I have built a base level resume but believe that the subject ‘Transition to Professional Practice’ can help me better display my skills across my resume, cover letters and also how to become a more confident speaker when speaking about myself.
Although I feel I am naturally a confident and bubbly person, a gap in my skills could be that sometimes my confidence could be seen as arrogance. Balancing my confidence out would be beneficial and help me to use my confidence as a positive instead of it hindering circumstances such as in job interviews.
I believe my ability to construct a well detailed cover letter is sound, but can always seek improvement. Both a cover letter and resume are important, with a cover letter however lead optometrist, Jewlsy Matthews says, “I’m often more interested in the cover letter than the CV. It’s a blank canvas for the candidate to showcase themselves. They can talk about their wider experiences,” (Matthews, 2018).
With my resume during week one, I have brief personal information with a career objective. I also have high school education, as well as information about my Bachelor of Sports Media degree and the subjects/skills I have learnt from the two years so far including the subjects I have completed.
