The modern reader, conditioned by the projection of today’s orthodox Jewish values back on antiquity and particularly on the rabbis, expects ancient rabbis to express sustained outrage and disapproval towards a place where nudity and licentiousness prevailed. It is easy to assume that ancient rabbis would offer detailed and strict decrees, dismissing the baths and prohibiting the crowds from attending. However, such judgments are not to be found. Instead, ancient rabbis enthusiastically patronized the bathhouse and shared its amenities and pleasures, just like all other groups during their era. Rabbinic literature supported by archaeological remains shows that Jews built bathhouses with no hesitation and rabbis frequented them with ease and comfort. Read more from author Yaron Z. Eliav.

Ahuvia’s work centers the body in explorations of Jewish political and cultural lineages and weaving together contemporary dance, traditional Eastern European Ashekanzi vernacular and cantorial singing, and emergent feminist approaches to Jewish mysticism.

This event is FREE and open to the public. Advance registration is required. To RSVP visit https://news.hofstra.edu/event/nefesh-a-new-dance-work-by-hadar-ahuvia/

“Lise Referred the newspaper on the train sit next to her. All week there has been bad news of the war and nothing to do but wait for more.” These words apply today because the bad news of COVID-19 and the misinformation continues to pour in. However, I continue to travel within the pages of a book; this book takes me to France, just after or close to its liberation and chronicles the stories of escape, survival, and human resilience. #currentlyreading This book was a “happy accident. “ I was contemplating what to read next, fiction wise, and this one poked out, and I picked it up and started traveling away. Why did I wait so long to read it? I’ve had for awhile. Book 9 of 25 books to read and I am still reading poems from the “Jane and Bertha in Me.” #rachelhall #jewishstudies #jewishliterature #family #shortstories @bkmk press (at Manatee Bend Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCWfnYkhRMU/?igshid=16hw1sgs3zz87

Alumni Publications: The Salome Ensemble (2016)
Alan Robert Ginsberg, who graduated from the MA program in 2010, is about to publish as a book that started as his MA thesis at Columbia. Syracuse University Press will publish The Salome Ensemble: Rose Pastor Stokes, Anzia Yezierska, Sonya Levien, and Jetta Goudal next month.
The book follows the work of 4 Jewish American women through the early decades of the twentieth century. The centerpiece of the story is the production of an important early film Salome of the Tenements (1925), based on Yezierska’s novel of the same name, adapted for the screen by Levine, and starring Goudal in the title role. Traversing immigration history, literary criticism, film studies, and feminist history, Ginsberg’s work is a model of American Studies scholarship.
