15 people 15 questions
tagged in this meme a few weeks ago by @isaksbestpillow!! here we go
1. are you named after anyone?
My first name is the name of a specific figure from UK history! someone a lot of uk people have heard of, but it's unusual to actually have this as a name. I get some incredulity and some people who politely ask where i'm from. I have to say i'm not 100% sure what answer they're expecting.
My tumblr url is a B-52s song which seemed somehow relevant back in uhhh 2013 or whenever it was.
2. when was the last time you cried?
I thinkkkk possibly when i was doing my taxes back in january. These days I tend to cry from stress and anger and frustration but it's really bad for me because once I start I find it VERY hard to stop, it makes my emotions spiral, I get more and more upset, so I really have to squash it down. For me crying is not cathartic, it just ruins the day.
3. do you have kids?
No - BUT - I have a lot of much younger cousins - and I babysit them & help with childcare fairly often so I am quite used to kids. Fortunately my cousins think i'm super fun
4. what sports do you play/have you played?
I am extremely noncompetitive! I was terrible at team sports at school and also had terrible hand-eye coordination. I have been at times an OK swimmer and I played a lot of table tennis in my last couple of years of school with the other four or five people who'd been deemed too useless for netball etc. As an adult I do youtube yoga, I periodically do app-based running stuff like Zombies Run or Nike Run Club. Ideally I'd like to go every day on like a 5 mile walk in an interesting location with a reasonable amount of ascent and descent but in a city it's hard to orchestrate that. Also I put my little cousins on my shoulders and get them to direct me where to go so they can learn the difference between left and right
5. do you use sarcasm?
I think I actually don't! Maybe a little bit sometimes. I tend to me more uhhh. pedantic and literal. tend to deconstruct .
6. what’s the first thing you notice about people?
uhhhhh probably skin texture . or haircut . or I look at their clothes. i don't know . sounds creepy. sorry.
7. what’s your eye color??
I think if you average it out it's brownish / greenish . think filippo berio bottle . maybe a bit browner / greyer than that. I tried to take a picture but it only confused me. Also when you look close enough at someone's eyes you might get flecks of like eight different colours.
8. scary movies or happy endings?
I do watch and enjoy scary movies and I have learned that I have a higher tolerance for them than some people BUT if I must pick between the two - I am team happy ending.
9. any talents ?
Little bit doublejointed! Can play a little bit of ukulele. Good memory. Good cook. Can make cocktails .
10. where were you born?
London, UK
11. what are your hobbies?
cooking, language learning, walking. Tumblr . opening new browser tabs . I'm getting some wine qualifications which is partly work related partly hobby.
12. do you have any pets?
no but my sister & her partner just got a dog and I do feel I am now an auntie
13. how tall are you?
167 cm I think? i think that's 5 ft 6? normal amount.
14. favourite subject in school?
probably languages ........... honestly I don't remember. unfortunately I had a thirst for knowledge and enjoyed most subjects.
15. dream job?
What I do now (print media production work, magazine production work) is pretty good for me
I'm going to do what @isaksbestpillow did and tag the last 15 people in my notes, that seems fun. no obligation obviously! @rociopath @fizzbuzzbananagram @magicmarker @autisticmisabel @starburger @the-omnishambles @itsmapes @youvegotaluckyface @misterhaderach @jestershark @lanninglurksnomore @sirquacklesdefoof @tracybaconnnn @321claratin @alien-ally

jestershark replied to your post: whenever i see someone go ‘i’m starting to read...
Do you have a recommended translation??
there’s not a completed alternative, unfortunately, i think partially due to the e** translators throwing a fit about anyone else taking on this work, but i have a few links here that cover pretty much all of the book although you might have to hop between different translators but it’s worth it, especially if you want to read the nsfw chapters with as minimal discomfort as possible (that is to say, the original author is really not blameless in how these scenes play out, but the e** translator bias makes the scenes 10x worse)

2 and 6 for the drop, 5 for the whole drop/fall/Landing?
Cut for spoilers and for length!
2. Which scene was your favorite to write in The Drop?
God, it’s been a long time. I don’t know if I could pick one favorite scene–there are a lot that I enjoyed, and it was so long ago it’s hard to remember which was my favorite at the time. I know I really enjoyed writing both shaving scenes, the one on one match with Tex, and maybe most of all the scene where Sigma lets Maine see the truth about how the fragments were created.
6. Which scenes did you cut, and which were added in The Drop?
Haha oh man, I had to go back to an old pre-scrivener file to find my cuts for The Drop. There’s over 6K in there but not all of it is straight cuts, some of it is stuff I rewrote and just archived the original versions to have them.
There’s one particular scene I cut from early in the fic with Maine and Connie, where they’re talking (well, mostly Connie’s talking) about terraforming and glassing. It was neat and I did like it, but I cut it for several reasons: 1) It pulled in some worldbuilding that is not from Halo but from Robinson’s Mars trilogy (regarding the colonization of Mars) and though I don’t think it’s incompatible with Halo canon, there was really no reason to have it in this fic and it was kind of apropos of nothing; 2) the final bit of dialogue was a little too philosophical for Maine and didn’t really fit the characterization I was building for him overall; and 3) there just wasn’t any good place for that scene, even if I’d fixed 1 and 2, and it didn’t add much to the story.
I also cut a brief bit of dialogue where Carolina and Maine are talking about the Insurrectionists and how it’s odd they think about them more than the Covenant. I cut it because it was a little too on-the-nose and too early in the timeline for Carolina to be voicing that kind of concern about their mission.
I wrote a ton of sexy bits for that fic and just cut the stuff I didn’t need, which was a lot. I cut a lot of bits and pieces I wrote when I was first playing with the idea of the idea of the trilogy and I hadn’t solidified my Maine voice yet.
As for what I added, it’s been so long that I don’t remember much of when I wrote what’s in the final draft. I do know that a few chapters got heavy re-writes, most notably any chapter involving combat.
5. Did you make an outline for the whole trilogy? Did you stick to it?
Oh my god, I would’ve died without outlines. I would’ve have written a single damn chapter without outlines.
That said, my outlines change constantly. If after The Landing is posted in its entirety I showed you my first outline for the trilogy you would laugh. There are things you don’t figure out (at least I don’t) until you’re deep in the story, character insights you have along the way, beats you realize you want to hit, and things change. That’s how it goes. And I’ve learned over the course of this Process that if ever I get stuck writing, I probably need to go back and re-outline.

November 6th-November 12th, 2019 Reader Favorites Archive
The archive for the Reader Favorites chat that occurred from November 6th, 2019 to November 12th, 2019.  The chat focused on the following question:
From any webcomic, who is your favorite magical girl/magical boy and why?
carcarchu
I'm biased but my favourite magical girl from a webcomic is Charlotte from my friend Kiwi's comic Fuwa fuwa dreamers https://tapas.io/series/-Dreamers I really love the unicorn theme she's got going and the art style she used for it is cuter than her usual style which really suits the aesthetic of the comic! it gives me really nostalgic vibes for the retro magical girls of the past I highly recommend checking it out! I also really like the webcomics Luminous - https://tapas.io/series/Luminous strawberry seafoam - https://www.webtoons.com/en/drama/strawberry-seafoam/list?title_no=1248 and attention magical girls (Its premise is it takes place in a world where men must take part in military service while girls must be magical girls) - https://www.webtoons.com/zh-hant/comedy/mofashaonu/list?title_no=1120&page=10(edited)
RebelVampire
For this, I gotta go with Apricot from Apricot Cookie(s)! https://apricotcookies.net/ I like her specifically because she isn't a magical girl but desperately trying to become one. And the way she does it is a comedic parody jab at every magical girl trope you can think of, making for an endearing and hilarious character.
jestershark
Norah from Agents of the Realm! https://agentsoftherealm.com/comic/semester1-vol1/ she's kind of cranky and awkward, and not exactly the typical archetype of hero, but that's kind of what makes her fun!
Kabocha
I think my favorite Magical boy in webcomics is Lark, from Moonlight Apparition. http://moonlightapparition.smackjeeves.com/ He's kinda snarky, freckled, and a floof. I love him. I'm also really curious about his backstory, so I look forward to seeing it get revealed over time
FeatherNotes
I gotta go with Willow and Aaron from Xii: of magic and muses https://xiicomic.com/ Willow is different in the fact that she is majorly timid and quiet for a main char, and her role is more passive as a healer that makes big decisions! Aaron is another fave because of her sharp and polished personality that makes her the analytical one of the team!
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Vera from SpectraSpell is extremely cute, endearing, and underrated http://spectraspell.smackjeeves.com/ Character profile page: http://spectraspell.smackjeeves.com/comics/2507266/vera-profile/
And I'm really into the experienced, jaded, kinda-depressed but with-a-secret-yearning-to-be-idealists-again heroines of Shattered Starlight https://www.shatteredstarlight.com/ and Phoenix Flair https://phoenixflaircomic.tumblr.com/ (stuck on hiatus )

9. Which fic has been the hardest to write?
The Fall is by far the hardest thing I’ve ever written. There was so much I had to accomplish in that fic, from juggling a large handful of disembodied character voices to covering a very long canon timeframe. I’m not convinced I did it all successfully but it challenged me tremendously and I learned a lot and I am pretty happy with the finished product.
22. Choose a passage from one of your earlier fics and edit it into your current writing style.
I don’t even know how I would do this one to be honest. Like I’m sure I have some kind of style that is identifiable across works but it’s so dependent on the POV character of what I’m writing. So if I were to re-edit something, I guess I’d probably just be shooting for better character voice (or adjusting worldbuilding details I’ve changed my mind on). But hell, let’s grab something and see how I’d edit it now, just for kicks. Here’s a bit from Flying Lessons (nsfw, below the cut):
South tastes tart. Not in some kind of bullshit metaphoric way, she actually tastes like lemons, probably from chugging some of that powdered sports drink shit from the mess before they left. Kissing South’s a contact sport. South’s all teeth and nails and muttered curses. Teeth dragging raw on her lips, fingers in her thick dark curls coming loose from their knot. Nails marking up her spine and making her shiver. South always has the iciest hands, slow to warm against her skin.
South has to stop, drag her hands out of Niner’s already-open flight suit to unbuckle her breastplate. Unsuiting in space. Kind of a thrill to that. The drop ships seal up of course but hey, faulty airlocks, that shit happens. Recycled air cool and dry on exposed skin, reminding you where you are. Floating in a tin can. Nothing but space out there. Cold and empty as shit.
Niner doesn’t give South a chance to get her undersuit down, just drags her back in for another kiss, pressing a hand to her chest—South’s got small square tits, fit nice in a palm—thumbing over her nipple through the smooth synthetic fabric, before reaching around her back to pull down the zipper herself.
Inside of a minute they’re both stripped to the waist except for their sport bras, worst things for it but what are you gonna do. South’s preoccupied anyway, pushing her up against the wall, biting her collarbone—has to stoop to do it, she’s a good few inches taller.
They’re both impatient, hands all over each other, but South gets to her first, snaking wiry hands down her pants to curl between her legs. Niner hisses at the cool fingers parting her lips and South laughs, smug and sharp.
Edited:
