A Kentucky man who killed three students and injured five others in a school shooting a quarter of a century ago is facing parole this week.

In 1997, Michael Carneal was a 14-year-old freshman when he shot a prayer group with a stolen handgun in the common room at Heath High School near Paducah, Kentucky. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 25 years, the maximum sentence then allowed for a person his age. Nobody loved me and nobody cared about me." Carneal then said he was sorry for what he had done and acknowledged that at that point he was only thinking of himself, not the people he was going to hurt and kill. He said there was no easy answer as to why he followed him, but at the time he was suffering from delusions and paranoia. He said the therapy and medication he received in prison stabilized his mental health. "It sounds strange to say, but I'm not really a violent person," he added. Carneal, now 39, did not respond to a recent written request for an interview from the Associated Press. Carneal's parole hearing is expected to begin Monday with testimonies from those injured in the shooting and families of those killed. On Tuesday, Carneal will apply for his release from the Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange. If the council decides against him, they can decide how long Carneal has to wait before he has his next chance to apply for parole.

Nicole Hadley (14), Jessica James (17) and Kayce Steger (15) were killed in the shooting. Among the injured was Missy Jenkins Smith, who was paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. She met Carneal in prison in 2007 and had a lengthy conversation with him. He apologized to her and she said she forgave him. "A lot of people think she absolves him of the consequences, but I don't think so," she said, adding that she opposed his release. He worries that he is unequipped for life outside of prison and that he could still harm others. He also doesn't think it would be right for him to walk free while the people he hurt are still suffering. On September 9, Commonwealth Attorney Daniel Boaz, the chief prosecutor for the territory that includes Paducah, wrote a letter to the Kentucky Parole Board opposing Carneal's release. "I experienced and witnessed the immediate repercussions of Michael Carneal's actions on December 1, 1997 and have been working on the repercussions of his actions ever since," Boaz wrote. The families of the children killed had suffered "a loss too great for words," he wrote. Breaking Up With Jessica James

If you love the movie-theatre experience, then you, like me, probably avoid movie dates like the plague. You just can't help yourself: you'll make any excuse whatsoever to postpone seeing a movie as a romantic activity for as long as possible. What if he texts during the previews? What if she laughs too loudly at all the wrong jokes? What if he, confused by the darkness, tries to make out mid-movie? What if she point-blank refuses to watch foreign films because reading subtitles is just too much of chore? What if she sees you cry as Doctor Strange’s Ancient One stretches her life so she can watch snow fall before she dies? Not that I would know anything about that about that last one.

Well, once she had wrapped her head around the chain of unlikely events that led to us being on a movie date, I like to think actress Jessica Williams would have enjoyed my reaction to her movie The Incredible Jessica James. I didn’t talk during the movie once and laughed at just the right volume.

If you're looking to explore honesty, watch a movie about someone dealing with a breakup, or just laugh, then I would recommend this movie to you.

A ton of the reviews I read in my post-movie research, rightly marked and remarked that Jessica Williams is freakin’ dope!

And she is. 

She drives this character-driven film to a great place through her interpretation of Jessica James. Jessica James is confident and insecure. She is honest and dishonest (in a way). She is simple and complex. She knows what she wants, and she doesn’t have a freakin’ clue. Basically, she is human. The range of Jessica Williams' performance--being open, shy, insecure, confident, driven, curious,  angry, understanding, ... as Jessica James--creates that humanity. 

What I loved most about Jessica James was her honesty. 

It's disarming.

Honest is “the only way to be,” according to James. We see what she means when we see her sharing private information with strangers at a cocktail party, or communicating her steamy expectations to her date in alarming detail, or Jessica introducing herself as someone “not yet broken by life" to her student's parent, and many more examples besides. Having seen this movie, I completely agree. We should be more honest ....especially when it's uncomfortable.

Jessica James' radical honesty proves its worth time and time again by egging other characters towards deeper connections.

Do we need deeper connections with others?

I suppose no, technically, we could live wholly on the shallows, but in our one and only life, deeper interactions taste better, so why not have them.

Walking away from this movie, I'm aspiring to reach Jessica-levels of honesty. 

On that note, I'll say that Jessica James crossed my path just when I needed her: after a breakup. I too had just lost my best friend and it really sucked but watching The Incredible Jessica James made me smile when I didn’t want to, so to Jim Strouse and Jessica Williams, thanks.
