“THE FALL OF THE TEN SUNS”

A Chinese legend tells of ten suns that rose and scorched the fields of Earth. A mythological archer, Hou Yi, shot down nine of the suns, breaking them apart and forming the stars, and leaving one sun to nourish the land. In 2013 New Mexico formed the DowntownABQ MainStreet Initiative to support economic, social, and creative vitality in downtown Albuquerque, and three years later selected Colombian-born artist Jessica Angel to create this 2nd St SW installation on The Imperial Building. Now based in New York City, Angel explores evidence that information lies at the core of everything we perceive and creates work that connects the real and virtual—making her an interesting choice to connect myth and a rapidly burgeoning technology hub in “The Land of Enchantment.”  @cryptoartsy/  @downtown.mainstreet/

From Jessica:

I am currently working on a series of drawings and paintings inspired by Paul Virilio and Pierre Levy's writing. I am exploring the infinite world that occurs on the micro-level of computers and the relationship between urban structures and integrated circuits. Both, paintings and drawings, are done using different cutout processes that allow my work to have a clean cut finish that expresses the idea that the breach between traditional media and digital matters is not as wide as it seems.

Artists' studios will be open on September 8–9, 2012, from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.
