Turn of the century correspondence

I regularly send cards with handwritten messages to friends and family, so I couldn't resist a piece of correspondence that depicts... correspondence. I'm struck by how modern the design of this postcard looks. The artist Henri Meunier was a Belgian illustrator and printmaker who worked in the Art Nouveau style popular during the turn of the 20th century. The bold lines and quiet subject of the postcard remind me a lot of the work of the papercut artist Nikki McClure, whose calendars, posters, and children's books seem to be in just about every bookstore. -- Jessica Grzegorski, Head of Cataloging

Early this morning, the Lord woke me up. He placed on my heart to look up articles about Jessica McClure, or "Baby Jessica," as she is famously known. I was 7 years old when on October 14, 1987, she caught the attention of America when at 18 months, she fell down a 22 ft water well while playing in her aunt's backyard. She was there, in the dark, surrounded by hard rock for 58 hours as many planned her rescue. From the well, she could be heard singing, Winnie the Pooh. From the well, she was heard crying. From the well, she slept as miners dug 30 ft deeper than her fall and wider next to where she was trapped. A paramedic inched his way down the dug hole and across to wrestle her free. Miraculously, she survived and I never forgot it.

The Lord wants you to know today that when you fall, He has already planned your rescue. People may not go that deep in their love for you, but that's okay. God's great love goes deeper than your pit and stretches wider. He finds you no matter where you are and sets you free by His power. No matter how long it takes for Him to deliver you from the situation you've fallen into, He's got you, and He's going to come through for you. It's going to be okay. From the well, sing to Him. From the well, cry out to Him. From the well, hear the truth of His word digging all around you and let it bring to a rest in Him.

Prayer: Thank you, Father, that your love is deeper than my pit. Your love is wider. I forgive anyone who felt they couldn't go that deep with me. They're not you. Thank you for never leaving me or forsaking me. You are my faithful deliver. Deliver me, Father. Let the power of your word go to work for me until I'm standing strong in you on a firm foundation. In Jesus' name, Amen.

I think at the younger end of UK screen drama we do have the problem that you mostly have to be slim and pretty to get in (the only young-young fat actresses I can think of who get mainstream attention are Nicola Coughlan and Sharon Rooney), but this is misguided. It's misguided because what British TV really, really likes – with the substantial exceptions of the extremely beautiful Suranne Jones, Vicki McClure, Keeley Hawes, and Jodie Whittaker, is a middle-aged/older woman who is either not obviously traditionally attractive, or who can be but who also can look absolutely rough as, with a variety of body types (including very skinny -- but not accompanied by a Romola Garai/Keeley Hawes sort of face). See Siobhan Finneran, Anna Maxwell-Martin, Lesley Sharp, Anne Reid, Imelda Staunton, Monica Dolan, Juliet Stevenson, Brenda Blethyn, Jessica Hynes, Sheila Hancock, Lucy Briers, Fay Ripley, Katherine Kelly. Again, a lot of those women aren't fat, though some are/have been, but even when they're skinny, they're not an American casting call line-up in facial appearance. They're not Carey Mulligan or similar! Boff makes the excellent point re: Coronation Street & Doctors, and I've basically excluded soap actresses here, although Sarah Lancashire started on Corrie, as did Katherine Kelly. And even people like Rebecca Front and Gemma Whelan are probably Too Plain For America.

like idk in terms of diverse casting the body diversity on our flag means death is like nothing i've personally seen. they truly have all shapes and sizes. they have fat actors (plural) on there and they literally just get to exist as fat people without it being A Thing. fucking phenomenal

Shout out to Berena, Otalia (no way was Jessica Leccia 40 in 2009 but neither were we), Saffi, Vanity and Silvacre. And I love what I've seen of Eve/Suki.

And here's some other older canon pairings I've been varying degrees of obsessed with over the last few years:

Shira/Hannah, Harlan Coben's Shelter, 50s playing 40s, Prime, US - actually a teen mystery thriller with this storyline going on in the background, but it's lovely and worth watching through the teen stuff for the woman returns to her hometown and reunites with her secret ex-girlfriend who stayed and married her ex-boyfriend feel good romance, it was cancelled after the first season but they were left in a good place. Constance Zimmer and Missy Pyle. Bonus Stephanie March.

Leanne/Rosalyn, Shortland Street, 50s/60s, medical soap, New Zealand. Comic but also sweet, they break up but do get back together off screen, with occasional mentions now they've left the show. Ellen/Pam - For All Mankind - 20s-50s - Scifi - AppleTV, USA. This one sneaks in on a technicality because the show moves forward a decade each season, so the actresses are in their 30s, but playing older in the latter two seasons. For All Mankind is an alternate history where the US loses the race to be first to the moon, if you power through the testosterone overload in the first two episodes (a total bait and switch) I very much recommend the whole show, which is ongoing, but their storyline ends in season 3. Bonus: Molly Cobb, Margo Madison.

Nat/Steph - Double Parked, 30s/40s, comedy, NZ - On the cusp for age, since Antonia Prebble is 39 and Madeleine Sami is 43, NZ comedy Double Parked is about a lesbian couple who accidentally get pregnant at the same time. It doesn't always land but the actresses are excellent. No idea where you can watch it sorry.

Kate/Jo, Line of Duty, 30s/40s police drama, British - Also on the cusp (McClure was 38, MacDonald 45) and the story didn't stick the landing, but season 6 of Line of Duty's Kate/Jo storyline had me entranced and there's a lot of excellent fic for it which got me through the second year of Covid. Since the show ended then it's possible to continue it the way we want. You may wish to watch Keeley Hawes chewing the scenery in season 2 and 3 as well, but it is possible to just watch season 6.

Patty/Tammy, Patty/Allison, Kevin Can Fuck Himself, 30s/40s, comedy/drama, USA, AMC. Again cusp, Murphy and Inboden are late 30s and Coke is mid 40s?, Patty/Tammy is the canon relationship, but the unacknowledged Patty/Allison relationship is the centre of the whole show. I loved this so much.

In the still ongoing and dramatic bad things will probably happen category:

Bradley/Laura, The Morning Show, 40s/50s, drama, US, AppleTV - there has been more to this storyline than I initially expected, the show itself is both wonderful and terrible in equal measure and everything about the set up suggests they will not end up together, so cannot recommend it in this context, but I haven't given up hope yet. Bonus amusement value in looking for subtext with Jennifer Aniston's character.

Kira/Eleanor, Orphan Black Echoes - 40s, Sci-fi, AMC/BBC America, Canada. One of them is Keeley Hawes, a sequel but you don't need to have watched the original to watch it, shows their younger romance too, includes sad bits, only season 1 so far so we don't know how it will ultimately turn out yet. I loved it, and it'll be on Northern hemisphere screens soon.

Moraine/Suian - Wheel of Time - 40s - Fantasy, Prime, don't know how it will end yet, but they're in a bad place as of the end of season 2 and I haven't read the books, but the TV show is differing in various ways anyway.

Taissa/Van - Yellowjackets - 40s, Showtime, USA, the teen survival drama is foregrounded, however the 25 years later lesbians are also great. But I would not rely on anyone getting out alive in the long term.

Things to avoid: Beacon 23, despite the Lena Headey playing gay again.

Favourite WLW Love Stories, wherein:

a) both characters are 40+ and/or 50+ (I am including Hospital Central’s Maca & Esther here, because even though they were in their 30s when the relationship started, they were in their 40s when the series finished and they were together)

b) love stories are successful (even if the series ended but they were still together when it did). Honourable mentions available for ones that were almost fully successful, but soaps…so stuff doesn’t last forever.

c) can be from any country (list the country, and directions to YT clips if you can)

d) drama / romance / comedy / police procedural / hospital drama / soap, etc.
