A small rambling about Jess & animals: Almost any time one is referred to her eyes immediately light up. I know that it was mentioned that she likes animals, but i'm going to go off that and say she loves them. Whenever a bird flies by, her eyes instantly go to it. Watching the squirrels scurry across the street. Any chance she gets to go to the zoo, she is taking it. Jess has rescued animals here and there. Not that many people know that about her, it's something she keeps to herself.

Dean comes to pick Rory up from an event at her grandparents. She comes out dressed in a beautiful gown. She looks absolutely stunning. She's surrounded by boys in fancy suits. All of high social standing. He sees her there, and that is when it hits him: That will never be him. Dean does not have a bunch of money. He does not like to wear suits and we know this after the Debutante ball episode where he says "All I can think about is getting home and out of this suit." So while he stands there, looking at his beautiful girlfriend he can hear the words of Richard Gilmore in his head from the night he came over for dinner. About Rory being a special girl. That she deserves someone just as special as she is. That they have certain standards to be upheld. He sees here that he does not meet those standards. That this will never be the life he will have. He sees he wouldn't fit. He doesn't belong. And because he loves her so dearly, after so many years of fighting for her love and going after her even when he shouldn't, that he needs to let her go. That the only thing he can offer her is setting her free so that she can find the one that can give her the finer things in life. So he asks her if he belongs here. Her hesitation is all the answer that he needs in that moment. Dean isn't breaking up with her here to be spiteful. He's breaking up with her out of love. Setting the one he loves free. Because it's the right thing to do. He doesn't yell. He doesn't raise his voice. He tells her "you look good." before he goes because he wants her to know that she does. So much more he wants to say but then he might change his mind. Getting into that truck is the hardest thing he has ever done, and his heart shatters as he looks back at her one last time, knowing this will be the LAST time that he looks at the love of his life. And though he moves on, he knows in his heart that if things would have been different that Rory would be his one. So that is an act of true love. I will go down with this. Thank you for listening. Okay so this may be confusing to explain, but i'll try my best. My friend Austin has this strange computer that can... connect to the future internet? Ok well to you guys it's not the future. For reference, i am from the year 2006, and yet whenever Austin over here accesses the internet, it's 2023??? Wowzas! Neil did say he wouldn't do a story that goes from enemies to friends concerning Ellie and Abby. Concerning the Abby being gay, I haven't seen anything from the writers that strictly says Abby is straight, but at the same time going from what I have seen in my respective playthroughs leads me to currently believe she isn't. If you do end up attempting to write them as a pairing, to stay true to both characters, sparing Joel and Jesse, etc and not go from canon would help with that because knowing Ellie, if Abby kills Joel especially in front of her and then they start dating, it would go against Ellie's character and it wouldn't be an accurate depiction of her. Then on another level it could easily delve into a toxic relationship if canon events transpire and they get together. I agree with the posts I have seen recently about toxic relationships shouldn't be glorified. I escaped a toxic relationship and when I see those stories I scroll away from them and they aren't appealing at all in more ways than one.

a lukewarm defense of ellie x abby/enemies to lovers as a whole

so to clarify what i was saying in the other post, i'm not disagreeing that abby could be straight/that you have good reason to believe that she's straight in canon. what i was saying in response to this was that if you're totally convinced that abby is straight, then that's great, i'm just not really sold on the idea that portraying her as queer betrays her characterization, since her sexuality + romantic life aren't a focal point of the games. (please note that i'm writing this under the assumption that your point is that writing a queer abby is synonymous to an ooc abby, which i really heavily disagree with. if this is just you saying that your personal characterization of abby is that she's straight and that you can't bring yourself to imagine her in a relationship with another woman, then that's a totally different thing and imo totally valid!)

this is my own personal take on fanwork and fanfiction, but i don't really take this as an indicator that the pairing shouldn't be written for. i personally wouldn't want to see ellie x abby in the next part, because to be executed well it would require the bulk of the plot.

when toxic pairings are glorified

first things first, i'm sorry you also had a bad experience! i've had my share of toxic relationships too and i'm glad we're on the same page about glorifying toxic relationships.

however, i don't use my fanfiction to moralize. there's a rather big difference between glorification and depiction, and i think it's my reader's responsibility to know where the line is. there's also, imo, a big difference between fanfiction that has some morally grey elements and flawed characters and fanfiction that's self-insert and makes your love interest an abusive asshole while still maintaining a joking/positive tone.

there's also a significant difference between pairings and self-insert, too. self-insert implies a sort of escapism, and it's sort of fucked up when the escapism being sought out includes toxicity. pairings are different people and don't have that same level of reader relation.

this all makes it sound like i'm going to purposefully write a toxic, shitty, unhealthy ellie x abby fic. which is not the case and leads me to my next point...

why i would write ellie x abby after joel's death: a short treatise on why i disrespect canon for sport

i have a lot to say about this one so i'll split this up into subsections

exhibit a: characterizations are sort of flexible

i say this with a caveat, because sometimes it's so clear when you pick up a piece of fic that a writer has no fucking clue what's going on and doesn't know how to write a character. but some of the best fanfictions i've read have taken a pairing i'd never see coming and would ordinarily disagree with and turned it into something insane, because odd pairings and circumstances that seem otherwise impossible require you to dig into what's left of a character after the most obvious character traits. on the surface, of course ellie would never be compatible with abby. but what about below that? that's something that you can only find out by writing it with your own personal interpretation of the characters.

exhibit b: genuine enemies to lovers is by definition a little iffy at first

real enemies to lovers has really gotten watered down lately, and i think that part of the problem is that so much fic is tagged as enemies to lovers when it's really just surface level tension that's resolved 1k words in (i myself am guilty of this, but i think it's important to point out anyway). it's supposed to feel impossible at first! they shouldn't start out with the characters making eyes at each other and by describing how crazy the sexual tension is in the air from the moment they meet, because that makes the payoff so much less rewarding. which leads me to my next point:

exhibit c: stirring the pot is fun

this is the reason why any fic i write for them would be set at least after joel's death and likely after seattle. if those events hadn't happened, it just wouldn't be a very interesting story. the challenge as the writer is to figure out how to get these two characters who have both immeasurably hurt the other person into a situation where, while still honoring their characteristics, they manage to adapt and see each other in a different light. that's why i like this pairing—not because i was picking up on mad chemistry between them and just want them to bang. from what i know about them, i feel like the potential for genuine character exploration/growth is crazy.

tldr: i see what you're saying! but the reasons you don't like the pairing are actually sort of the same reasons why i personally do...which is kind of an odd impasse to be at lol. anyway thank you so much for sending this in!!

Leon, your passion for all of your characters shine through in everything that you do. From your gorgeous writing, to your extensive, creative and complex lore building between your characters (looking at Markus and Jesse here), the love and the care that you put into writing is something truly special. The context to each muse is complex, and you're fantastic at digging deep into the humanity of each character, picking apart the flaws and victories of each of them. These little aspects of lore and world building adds so much depth and creativity that it's an absolutely treat to read.

Plotting with you ooc has routinely left my heart crushed on the ground, so if you count that as a victory, then so be it. It's so clear the development that you have for them shines through in your messages, adding to that lore. You let me ramble, at length, about my girl and then come up with the most heartbreaking ways that the pieces fit together with Markus and I could myself lucky for being able to to plot with you on a lot of this stuff. Your writing is absolutely gorgeous, your characters amazing, and you're a great and valued writer here in the RPC.

{{ ooc: Oh man, I can't properly ramble about those because neither of the new ones belong to me!

I kind of, sort of, slightly, just a little bit helped with the development of @wiralonprimesskits's evolution for Magic! A Galarian Misdreavus that evolved into a more Jester-like creature than your average Mismagius. But I just suggested some design details and offered feedback. It was mostly their idea.

And then the part-dark-type Mismagius is something I've only seen others talking about, I really don't know anything more besides what's in the posts. u.u I really should learn more though! I'll definitely be keeping an eye on the Alola adventure to see if any more info comes out about them.

Unless you mean the "breeds" I mentioned having headcanons of, but those aren't so much "new" as they are just, slightly different shapes and features. Contest breeds having more flowing and sleeker lines, wild ones being more scruffy and compact, different shades and markings and proportions for visual appeal breeds, Jess's first Mismagius is more round because she evolved very early, Nana's Mismagius is very lithe and flowy, etc.

(Maybe I should draw those out someday... I really enjoy drawing Mismagius and it's frankly a CRIME that I haven't done it in years!)

The other new Mismagius aren't my inventions though, unfortunately!

is it tough for anyone else to really rank the ud characters like??? let me ramble for a second

separating player base and fandom. i know the players have very BASIC rankings. ie, mike is usually #1, and emily is lowest. like that's a let's players ranking of the characters. i think it's very shallow and boring but. they're like a player. not really a fandom person.

with that out of the way, i don't understand the fandom's rankings of the characters. because for me personally, i like all of them. for every bad thing i have to say about them, i have a positive thing to say. for every action of theirs i criticize, i can also defend them. so i can't really rank them based on bad shit they do

in my eyes, i don't understand hating ashley but liking josh. that doesn't compute to me. or hating jess but liking emily, vice versa. because they're all equally shitty or can do horrible things. and before you say sam, she can like kill everyone in the lodge fire. so yeah. (but a post about sam's character is another post for another late night)

i find every ranking of the characters really boring. like every tier list, every numbered list or anything like that is usually just predictable. you know either emily, jess or ashley is gonna be at the bottom (which is a shame bc those three are in my personal top 4) and you know chris is gonna be high, mike or matt is either high or middle, sam is usually high and josh is high sometimes as well. or really low. it's kind of a toss up.

there's a lot to be said about the low rankings of the female ud characters. i think it's boring when someone ranks emily low, to me that's just bad taste. and like sheep behavior in a way. the game wants you to hate her so... you hate her. that's something the playerbase does, except for maybe a few let's players who enjoyed emily. but majority of them dislike her because she was like. written to be disliked.

not entirely though? she has her redeemable moments but even then people still hate her. like being mean is a death sentence for emily and i find that strange. because the people who say that about her, in the same breath, like michael, who quite literally harassed a girl in the prologue (and emily, jess, ash and matt were also participants so this is what i mean by they're all equally shitty in their own ways)

so that's why i personally can't rank them because... they're all equal in my eyes. and yeah i have 4 that i geek about, and josh is one that i publicly geek about (i know nobody is gonna believe my top 4 but it's: emily, josh, jess and ashley) but i love all them like on the same level. like i have so much to say about all of them. except josh is like. the one i have been thinking of making content for like stories and art, etc, so that's why he dominates a lot of my ud posts bc he's just in my headspace

and also. once you stop thinking about the morality of the characters, ranking them doesn't fucking matter!!!! because they're all put into this horrible situation but not necessarily horrible people. like there's sympathetic moments that i feel like are just glossed over for the sake of saying you dislike them.

this happens for ashley. she's a sweet girl, she's kinda just silly when it comes to humor, and she's jumpy and not a fan of scary things. but god forbid she freaks out and suddenly she's a whiny bitch who's useless compared to chris (that's just misogyny not even gonna hold you) and she does horrible things that people ALSO hold above her head and then forget how she STARTED at the beginning of the game.

i've already said how i feel about the whole "ashley killing chris" thing. you should know that that is an out of character choice for chris who spent the entire basement sequence saying "ashley i won't let you die" only to shoot her? is that not an OOC choice for him? ofc you're gonna get punished for doing that. the game straight up tells you in a TIP: sometimes doing nothing is the best thing to do. which is something you can do in those trigger control-like options.

hell, even josh is like: "mike knows how to treat a lady. hint: it's not to shoot her in the face!" to chris if he shoots ashley (also kinda foreshadowing ? to mike potentially shooting emily) so like. it's not even ashley's fault that YOU chose an out of character option for chris and got punished.

and to conclude this, yes she can kill him but DID U KNOW??? she can also open the door and Save him ??? she doesn't Just kill him no matter what you do. that's absurd.

anyways. i got carried away. in conclusion, ranking the characters in fandom is pretty much useless. i'll end it off with this
