Tumblr media
you find shelter somewhere in me, i find real comfort in you
[ID: a digital drawing of xion and naminé from kingdom hearts. the background is mostly transparent, with a purple splatter with straight edges and three white lines on the lower half, which they seem to be sitting on.
they are beside each other in mirrored poses, inner legs slightly behind the other. naminé's eyes are closed and her shoulders are tense. xion's mouth is slightly open and her only visible eye stares down at the middle, where their hands are intertwined. /End ID.]

wanted to thank you for giving me the courage to be way more annoying about my aro headcanons. this character who pursues a new girl every week? he's aro, just thinks flirting and fucking is fun. this character who's in the center of several popular ships? she's aro. these two characters that everyone wants to fall in love? one of them is aro and it's a qpr actually. get fucked. fires my aro beam at all your faves.
YES. YES!!!!! THIS IS THE EFFECT I WISH TO HAVE ON THE WORLD
listen aro headcanons and fanworks are a critical component of any fandom ecosystem and it is a Public Service to be as annoying about them as possible tbh. im THRILLED to hear ive encouraged this. everyone should get more aro headcanons and be WAY more annoying about them. it’s what we and everyone deserves.

been watching dead boy detectives (i only have the last episode left) and i am very curious about your aro crystal thoughts 👀
ok hello welcome to my thoughts !!! i think pre-canon, it is not something that she ever would have thought about. she is having a good time with her flings and has no reason to want anything more, she doesnt Do love and why should she, she is sharp and glittering and untouchable!
and then post canon as shes grappling with her memories she kind of goes wow i never really felt anything for anybody i was with. kinda feels like proof i was a bad person. hey ive got a fun thing going with charles and hes starting to fall for me and i dont feel the same way about him. kinda feels like proof im Still a bad person because if i cant even love sweet and fun charles, who Could i love
she brings this to niko who, while Not Processing her own latent aroaceness, gives some awful advice. you are such a good person crystal i am sure you will find love :] (this does not help with crystal continuing to link inherent goodness to capacity to love.)
crystal gnaws on this for a while, trying to figure it out, getting less than helpful advice from those around her, and eventually talks to charles about how she doesnt think she can love him the way that he wants to be loved. (the way he might want to love her). she likes kissing and what theyve got going on, it is fun and nice, but she doesnt think she is capable of loving him. charles is good about it!
who isnt good about it is edwin when he finds out, and there Is a fight. edwin accuses crystal of leading charles on, crystal says that it isn't her fault she cant love him like edwin does, edwin asks her why she cant just try, and well. things dont go well. its messy!
crystal has got to face the fact that she cant force herself into being in love, no matter how she wishes she could and it feels like it would make things easier. she tells niko, who says that sounds sad. crystal hasnt really processed it until that point but she realizes that it isnt, she still cares about them, and theres this weight off her chest realizing she doesnt have to try and force herself to do it in the 'right' way. niko, with all her dreams of fantastical love that have never felt real or attainable, says huh! and has her own things to process-
overall !!! i think aro crystal is very fun and silly and all the internalized amatonormativity would make it a Real mess to grapple with given all the stuff shes already got going on about being a Bad Person, but ! it makes things click into place ! and she learns to accept and appreciate that without guilt

Well now I want to know about the haunted hotel
Ooh yes soo I worked at this one hotel that was built in the 1920s. Several people died there, of course, over its history. One person fell down an elevator shaft from a high floor after it got stuck and he tried to crawl out. One of my coworkers there would say he was haunting the 4th elevator, but I don’t believe that at all because 1. That elevator just sucks and 2. The dude died in the OTHER building they don’t use anymore. Like did he get lonely and decide to haunt the elevators on the side that gets used instead?? Whatever.
I DO have a photo a guest took up in the ballroom on the top floor that looks like there’s a woman in a blue dress! Just vaguely. They showed it to a security guy who sent it to me. It’s unclear enough to be a possible trick of the lens, and clear enough to possibly be a ghost. Here it is (with an identifying part of the photo cropped out):
Tumblr media
The guest was up there at night all by herself, so idk who this could have been if it wasn’t a person. But it could just be a trick of the light, who knows!
THIRD STORY ABOUT THAT HOTEL. One morning I came into work, and I had two night auditors on that night. They told me that someone kept calling from the 11th floor and asking what day is it, what time is it etc. and they would tell her, but she kept calling. One of them asked her what room she was in, and she said a room number we don’t have. So they called security to see who was up there, but security didn’t find anyone… but while security was up there, literally standing RIGHT BY the phone this person kept calling from, SHE CALLED AGAIN. No one to be seen. SPOOPY

okay that atla snippet KILLED me. want to share bits from any of your other atla wips? dealer's choice!
We'll go with something from Care & Keeping, which is an AU 5+1 fic (aka five times Zuko got Sokka to talk about Feelings like a functioning human person and one time Sokka didn't make Zuko talk about his) (aka the care and keeping of your emotionally stunted friend when you’re not used to having friends while learning how to run a country (is Zuko or Sokka the stunted one? (The answer is yes!!!!))) where Sokka stays in the Fire Nation after the war to be an advisor/bodyguard/catch-all trusted person while Zuko establishes his rule after the war.
I actually got pretty far in this one, but I don't anticipate finishing it. Regardless! This little snippet is from the first entry, when the Southern Water Tribe, Aang, and Katara are getting ready to leave. Picture the docks with all the people loading ships with stuff. The night before, Sokka told his dad about his plans to stay, which Hakoda (who was really looking forward to, y'know, being home with both his kids) doesn't take great. And scene:
Sokka opens his mouth like he might say something, but stops. Someone calls for Hakoda. Hakoda hesitates, and then walks away. Sokka sags, shoulders slumping, to lean heavily on his crutch.
Zuko frowns and elbows Aang. “What’s going on with them?” he asks.
“Sokka and his dad got into a fight last night,” Aang says, quietly, so only Zuko can hear. “It was really bad. Hakoda yelled. I didn’t think that Hakoda ever yelled.”
There is a barbed, hard thing that lives in Zuko’s chest, and it sharpens every time one of his friends clashes with a parent. It wakes when Toph’s face goes blank as she’s read a letter from the Beifongs, or when Mai’s mother tells her she could be so pretty if only she smiled, or, like right now, when Aang says that Hakoda yelled. And Zuko knows, he knows, that not all fathers are like his father. He knows that Hakoda is as far from Ozai as a man can reasonably get.
But Sokka stands on the dock, stiff-backed and uncertain among his own people, and Hakoda very deliberately coils a rope into a loop without turning to look at his son.
Aang smiles thinly and says, “Guess Katara’s temper doesn’t come from her mom,” and the thing in Zuko’s chest bares it’s teeth and snarls.

hello i am hawkeye fan by which i mean "a fan of what hawkeye could be but seldom is" and i've read all of the fraction/aja run but haven't really read many other hawkeye comics!! what do you think are the best ones that showcase him? especially if there are others that have characterization in line with the fraction ones 👀
most ppl who love the fraction characterization end up loving Thompson and Rosenburg runs so I'm gonna start there and add some personal recommendations at the end
•Tales of Suspense #100-104 (Rosenburg, 2017) Clint and Bucky team up!! Very fun, weird but fun
•West Coast Avengers (Thompson, 2018) Clint leading the West Coast Avengers, another fun comic
•Hawkeye Freefall #1-6 (Rosenberg 2020) first Clint solo in years, extremely well received, much more serious and a good character study for current clint imo
•Black Widow #1-15 (Thompson, 2021) has Clint in it post-freefall up to like issue 10 I believe? Not my personal favorite but im not gonna get into that
Additional recs:
•Secret Avengers vol 1&2 (I haven't read this yet bc collecting it is a pain since multiple volumes with the same name but if you use marvel unlimited it's easier, but I've heard it's good, it has Deadpool and I've seen the screenshots and there is a huge Clint secret spy focus, but very heavy, set after fractions run)
•Hawkeye vs Deadpool (2014) my first and personal favorite Clint comic even if he's a grumpy boy the whole time
•Thunderbolts (2022) careful w this bc Clint has led two thunderbolts teams at this point but since it's recent it should be easier to find. Better follow up to freefall than Black Widow was, but it's a team centric comic more than a Clint centric comic but nice to know how the guy is doing after freefall tbh
Anyways I'm gonna stop there bc there are very many Clint comics but these are the ones that fraction fans tend to generally like from what I've seen?? Honestly you don't have to read all of them, just picking one and jumping in is probably fine, most writers lately don't need a lot of context to get the general gist of what's going on
Hope you enjoy!!!

Last flash fiction prompt for the evening! @jesperr-fahey requested something with Frenchie and Jim being pals. I absolutely adore the two of them, so thank you so much for this prompt!! This was also inspired by @strawberrypirates ‘ art of Jim and Frenchie being sneaky, which is my absolute favourite and has lived in my brain rent free since I saw it, you should all go look at it here.
Tw for alcohol and a tiny bit of angst.
--
“This is a terrible plan,” Jim breathed, hiding behind a crate and scanning the dark deck. “We’re so going to get caught.”
“It’s a great plan,” Frenchie whispered, crouching right behind them. “And what’s the worst that they’ll do if they catch us?”
“Flog us,” Jim muttered. “Keelhaul us. Izzy’s been threatening to hang someone up by their toes –“
“Right. Which is exactly why we need to do this in the first place. We need a break, or the next time Jizzy Izzy threatens someone you’ll try stabbing him. Again.”
Jim exhaled. He wasn’t wrong. They were wound tight, and they needed a break. And really – it wasn’t the worst plan. And it was already half done, wasn’t it? They’d already snuck into the hold and stolen a bottle of rum, which was tucked deep in one of Frenchie’s pockets. Now they just had to make their way up to the crow’s nest, and they’d be golden.
“Dios. Fine. C’mon.”
They slipped across the deck, ducking behind the mast just as Ivan started to turn their way. Reached behind them, tangled their hand in Frenchie’s coat, and dragged him along with them. He pressed in beside them, freezing, listening for any sound that Ivan had seen them –
Nothing. Total quiet.
Good. Jim breathed. They let go of Frenchie’s coat, then slowly poked their head out around the mast, squinting to see where Ivan was in the darkness. A hand landed on their shoulder, Frenchie leaning over them to do the same.
“Tall bastard,” Jim muttered under their breath.
“Don’t be jealous, babe,” Frenchie whispered back, grin audible in his voice, “someday you’ll grow tall too –“
Jim elbowed him in the side. The wheeze he tried to smother was totally worth the risk.
Across the deck, Ivan turned his back on them, and started walking away. They tracked him across the deck, into the corridor leading to the captain’s quarters –
“¡Ve! Ve! Ve!” Jim whispered, waving their hand in the universal motion for ‘go’. “He’s gone, go –“
Frenchie slipped around them, stealthily running for the nearest rigging. Jim was right behind, holding it steady as he started to climb, then scampering up after him. They were both good at this, light and quick and so very fast. There was no wind tonight, and it was easy, clambering up and up and up until they could haul themself into the crow’s nest, collapse beside Frenchie and try and hold in their laughter.
It felt good, sneaking, hiding, getting away with shit. Fuck, this was fun.
Frenchie’s grin was bright in the moonlight, feet stretching across the crow’s nest to press against the wooden boards at Jim’s side. Jim did the same, pressing their spine into the wood behind them, letting themself stretch and slouch into something that felt so safe and secure that they never wanted to leave. They were so high above the ship, so high above the world, just the stars and the moon and their friend to keep them company. No one could find them up here, no one could curse them out or remind them of their missing friends or how much they had failed them –
Frenchie nudged their ribs with one foot. Jim’s gaze snapped to him, only then realizing the way their breathing was quickening, the way their hands clenched into fists. They exhaled. Forced their hands to unclench. Took the bottle when he held it out.
The rum burned going down, a cleansing fire, centering them back to this moment. To the wind, the stars, and Frenchie. This had been fun. This was fun. They could let it be fun, couldn’t they?
“Cheers, m’dear,” he said with a soft smile, toasting them once the bottle was back in his hand. “May we have better days and better nights.”
They breathed in the salt of the air, let the calm lapping of the waves far below wash over them. This was good. This moment, right here, was good. And wasn’t that enough for now?
“Sí,” they whispered back, letting the wings of their shoulder blades dig into the wood behind them, pressing into Frenchie’s foot at their side. “Better days.”

you've mentioned having other POVs coming up for wriggle up on dry land- would love to see any dani or sam pov snippets, if you've got em :eyes:
YES, i have some of a scene with sam i was working on earlier that i really love. i'll put most of it under a cut bc it's pretty long but i had a great time writing this and wanted to include like. the whole Section it was from.
Sam never used to be a morning person. It was always difficult to get himself out of bed, especially when he was small. His father had made up a song about it that he would sing when rousing Sam for the day. Ola would walk into his son’s room already singing it, quiet at first and then louder and louder the longer Sam insisted on burying his face in his pillow and refusing to acknowledge being awake. He’d always gotten up at the end, usually with a groaned insistence that his father stop embarrassing him because he’s up, he’s up, and there had been less complaining involved the older he got. It was easier to go along with once Sam understood the necessity of making use of what time the day afforded to him, especially with football and school and other things leaving him increasingly feeling like every moment of the day must be preciously guarded and budgeted appropriately.
Lately, though, his perspective on the earliest hours of the day has shifted significantly. Now, mornings are the one part of the day that belong only to Sam. He doesn’t struggle to greet them now, no matter how startling it is for his alarm to go off and how heavy his body feels as he lays in bed in the moments before rising. The resentment he had once felt with the relentlessness of the arrival of the new day and the necessity of getting up to participate in it is replaced with gratitude. When he first wakes, there are a few moments of listening to his alarm go off where Sam can almost hear the sound of Ola’s voice, singing the song he’d made up so many years ago. Mornings make him miss home, and his father in particular, with a fierceness that makes his chest ache, but he appreciates them for that. The homesickness hurts, the longing for the life he had loved so much and left behind to be here throbbing like his lungs are bruised, but the pain is a reminder of what is important to him and why. Not a day goes by that Sam doesn’t think of the things that are the most important to him, and he wouldn’t want to forget even if he could. The schedule of a Premier League footballer also makes praying on time complicated and difficult at points. This is especially the case when travelling for away matches against clubs whose facilities do not have a dedicated prayer room. Mornings though, the earliest parts of the morning before the sunrise, are Sam’s no matter what, and he holds them precious, going through the well-worn steps of Fajr alone in his house or a hotel room, always on time. He has developed an ever-growing fondness for the cold blue of the watery light that seeps across the horizon just before the sun rises, and for the way his mother always sends him a text when she had finished with her own prayers, every day without fail. There is no time difference between Lagos and London half of the year, and only one hour between them the other half. Although the exact time of the sun’s rising isn’t the same, it’s been a comfort to Sam never the less to think of his family and friends at home going about their lives in tandem with his, despite the difference separating them. When he kneels and presses his forehead to the fabric of the prayer mat the imam of his childhood mosque had presented him before he left, a gift from the community and a token of their pride in him, he imagines his mother and father alongside him doing the same. For those moments, it’s possible to believe that he never left.

thank you so much for answering all these questions haha!! you reblogged my character sheet and made a comment about major/minor levels that i want to clarify- my assumption was that since you start at 1 major level, you gain 5 minor levels for every major level AFTER 1, so at 2 major levels you'd have 5 minor levels, etc etc. or when you start with 1 major level do you also have 5 minor levels, giving you 10 minor levels at 2 major levels?
it was intended to be that you start out with a single major level as in, you start out at level five! I'll go through and clarify that tonight or tomorrow morning.

you are the person who got me to watch the untamed and now I am BEGGING you to tell me what guardian is and where I can watch it.. is there time travel because sometimes I see two gifsets that do not seem like they're from the same show
ooohhhhhhhhohohohohohohohoohohhooo ohhhhhhh boy where do i even start
so uhhhhh Guardian is an on-fire trashcan of a show and also the only thing I've been able to think about for like a month. It's based on the novel of the same name by Priest, which I have not yet read but have heard is very good.
I say "based on" bc I have been given to understand that it is a VERY loose adaptation, bc the novel is pretty much entirely about That Gay Shit™, the undead, reincarnation, and literal gods, all of which IIRC are big no-nos under censorship laws. So the show had to get a little creative, and so now it's about aliens? and time travel? sort of? It's weird, but that's okay, because the show is far more interested in the homoerotic subtext, of which there is OODLES.
So basically our two main characters are:
Zhao Yunlan, who is a regular human dude who is in charge of Special Investigations Department, or SID, which is essentially the department of Supernatural Monster Cops, who are responsible for making sure superpowered underground alien people don't come up to the surface and run roughshod over regular humans, and
Shen Wei, a mild-mannered university professor who is Actually Ten Thousand Years Old, and is also secretly a superpowered underground alien person. He knew a dude 10,000 years ago who looks exactly like Zhao Yunlan for unknown (timey-wimey) reasons, and was very obviously in love with him, so when he meets Zhao Yunlan he is IMMEDIATELY lost in the yearning.
There's also a bunch of other people who work under Zhao Yunlan in the SID, and they are all absolutely delightful and have a whole found-family sort of dynamic going on.
Is this a good show? I think if I'm being totally honest I would have to say no? But is terrible in a bunch of truly delightful ways. The CGI is literally shit-tier. Some of the props could not more obviously be made out of craft foam and paper-mache. The quality of the dubbing work is really uneven, and by the last 15 episodes or so they seem to completely give up and some of the lines are dubbed over by someone who is CLEARLY not the same voice are the person speaking. A lot of the writing choices make NO sense, and the plot starts to go completely off the rails somewhere just past the halfway point. (there's also some stuff that is bad in like, a bad way, but I'll talk about that a bit at the end of the post)
The thing about this show is that it's gay. Like GAY gay. Like The Untamed was pretty gay, but I could conceivably see someone cover their ears and shut their eyes to all the gay subtext in that show and convince themselves there's a heterosexual explanation for everything. Not so with Guardian. Like, I really, legitimately cannot fathom even the most willfully ignorant person not picking up on the vibes between Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei. I simply cannot picture it. There is, in fact, NO heterosexual explanation for them.
The show throws in the most flimsy, half-hearted nods to the idea that Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei are just Good Platonic Buddies, and then in the next scene will just drop in a 5-10 minute sequence of Shen Wei taking a sick Zhao Yunlan home, tucking him into bed, staring at his sleeping face with a face full of tenderness and longing, and then cleaning his apartment and folding his laundry for him. It's fucking unreal.
The show was very clearly trying to push the limits of subtext to see exactly how much they could get away with, and as far as I can tell the answer they got was "not that much", bc I've heard some suggestion that the show was pulled shortly after broadcast for another round of edits.
So it's on Viki, but if you don't want to pay for a streaming service and don't mind sliiiightly sketchier subs, it's also on Youtube! It might be some other places too, but those are the ones I know about.
I'm going to stop now bc this post could seriously be like 5 times longer but please watch Guardian and join me in my daily cries about Shen Wei (Zhao Yunlan can come too I guess, but it's mostly about Shen Wei, bc of the inherent eroticism of loyalty and life debts)
Lastly, bc I would be remiss not to mention it, here's some warnings about the worst things I can remember off the top of my head. I personally still think the show was well worth watching, but there's a few things I sort of wish I had known going into it, beyond the vague warning "the ending sucks". It's gonna be spoilers, so read at your own risk.
There's some talk about suicide in the first arc which isn't really that bad in the grand scheme of things, but can come across as dismissive and/or insensitive. There's an arc somewhere in the mid-20s that leans on some really ableist "split-personality" tropes. I will fully admit that the only thing that kept me watching at that point was the knowledge that this would be over in an episode or two, and the fact that the youtube subtitles translated comments about other character's behavior as "cringe", which I found an extremely funny translation choice.
And lastly, the finale. The finale is bad in a number of ways, but the biggest and easiest to explain is that the show goes full Bury Your Gays and kills off both Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan. ( and then another entity takes control of Zhao Yunlan's body?? so the general public doesn't actually know he's dead?? which I found pretty uncomfortable) But like basically my view of the ending is that if something bad happened, No It Didn't. Which seems to be the general opinion, since apparently Priest went back and wrote an extra epilogue chapter to fix the drama's ending.

do you have any worship music recs? i've been feeling really cynical about worship music lately- it feels like so much of it is just performative, and i know that a lot of "well known" artists aren't affirming, and that makes it hard for me to connect to their music. music is really important to me, though, so i wish i was able to worship in that way, but i don't really know how to right now
I don’t listen to much worship music of the contemporary variety, to be honest. But you may find some stuff in my #music tag!
Anyone else have recs?
