Jerry LOVED Boxing. He loved watching it, he loved meeting people involved, he loved intelligence and strategy. One of the great joys in his life was his brother (in-law), Young Dick Tiger (King Charles Nwokolo from Nigeria). Tiger was a contender in the Olympics, winner in the Commonwealth Games and a very successful professional boxer who now focuses on working with up and coming talent and people who have a passion to box as their fitness routines at his Tiger Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, California. Tiger an inspiring example of one who suffered adversity in his early years and turned it into LOVE. Love of his profession, love of his family, love of his friends, kindness towards everyone. He makes you smile and lifts your heart. Tiger is pure joy. Maestro-Composer Bramwell Tovey is conducting the LA Phil tonight (Aug 13, 2019). In tribute to Jerry I have another story... I had a wonderful time working with Bramwell Tovey. He has an incredibly great sense of humor. At the start of each concert, he would address the audience with related stories about each piece we were to play, in a humorous manner, and it was quite enjoyable. During one visit to the Bowl after I retired, he came back to visit me told me what a good time he had with me and I related the same thing back to him. I wish all conductors could have the same charisma and sense of humor that he did. note: Jerry always enjoyed when he conducted the orchestra. I have quite a collection of moments captured of them schmoozing before concerts or during rehearsal breaks. Did you know Bramwell Tovey also played Tuba? I bet you didn't know Jerry also played French Horn! Maestro Kurt Sanderling conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. On numerous occasions, LA Phil worked very closely with Maestro Kurt Sanderling. He was old school, very serious, not much of a sense of humor but he knew his music, interpretations and phrasing and would explain it in explicit detail as we would rehearse. During one rehearsal, he stopped and asked "which one of you was Larry Sanderling?" I think they were related so he had Larry come to his office is a room at the break to talk. During one week of concerts, we played Dimitri Shostakovich‘s fifth Symphony. Maestro Sanderling told us a story I found kind of frightening. He said that the fifth Symphony was written to ridicule Stalin. Numerous composers got together in secret to talk about this because if Stalin found out that he was actually being ridiculed they would all of been killed. Stalin always thought that it was about his great leadership with the soldiers. For instance, the third movement depicted Stalin as a buffoon. In the last movement, the last page is all just G chords played over and over and over again saying "me me me me me" which meant "I matter, I am something, I am not a puppet of this dictator”. It continued with a lot of little hidden hidden agendas in the piece that not only ridiculed Stalin but stated no matter what Stalin did, the little people mattered and that’s apparent in a lot of the chords he wrote. Kurt and Dimitri was very close and their political views were identical. Kurt was Jewish and very much affected by Stalins hatred for the Jews which inspired Kurt to perform this piece as much as possible. I admired their bravery, conviction and passion.
