The Parade - She Sleeps Alone (1968)
Flamenco tinged sunshine pop, maybe. The Parade had one of first sunshine pop hits with Sunshine Girl in 1967. The Parade were songwriter/producer Jerry Riopelle and three actors (including Stuart Margolin, who played “Angel” in The Rockford Files)

"Wouldn't it be wonderful... if it turned out you're not an S.S. man at all?"
I liked the part with the lard.
An intriguingly complex espionage story, that got much darker than I had expected. Incredible performances by Marlon Brando, Yul Brynner, and Janet Margolin, as well as believably written dialogue, brought an amazing depth to the characters. The story went to some emotionally affecting places, especially with Janet Margolin's character, which was truly heart-rending.
The cramped, claustrophobic interior of the ship was shot beautifully in black and white, and gave a palpable sense of dread to tense moments. Jerry Goldsmith's score was used sparingly, but fit the tone of the movie very well. That harpsichord melody in the main theme was particularly nice, and by the time it was reprised for the final shot it had taken on a great melancholic quality.
An excellent movie all round. I'm genuinely shocked I'd never heard of it before. Strongly recommended.

“Crosseyed Cat"
From 1977′s Hard Again.
After spending most of his career at Chess Records, Muddy Waters signed with the Columbia imprint Blue Sky. He recorded three excellent records with Texas guitar slinger Johnny Winter producing as well as providing them hot licks. This is the first and, arguably, the best of the three and won him a Grammy.
Chess was sold in 1975 and became an all-reissue label, so Muddy had nowhere to go. In came Winter to cut the record, using the bulk of Muddy’s live band. That was Pinetop Perkins on piano, Bob Margolin on guitar, Charles Calmese on bass, and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith on drums. Longtime partner James Cotton came back to play harp on the record.
Muddy said during the recording that playing the songs “made his little pee-pee hard again.” That’s where your title comes from. When it came to making records, Muddy never made a bad one. However, very few had the fire and vitality of the Blue Sky records. Front to back, This album is smokin’ hot stuff. The band is firing on all cylinders and Muddy hasn’t sounded this powerful - and joyous - since maybe the Live At Newport album.
He cut a follow-up in 1978 that brought guitarist Jimmy Rogers and harpists Big Walter Horton and Jerry Portnoy back into the fold called I’m Ready. It doesn’t thump as heavy as Hard Again but does contain a definitive version of the seminal Sonny Boy Williamson number “Good Morning Little School Girl.” From the tours came two live albums, 1979′s Muddy “Mississippi” Waters Live and Breakin’ It Up, Breakin’ Down which didn’t see release until 2007. Both are okay and an expander version of the 1979 album came out in 2003 with 11 more songs. Again, it’s okay. Not as mean and nasty as Live At Newport, but you can’t hold that against anyone.
His final record, King Bee, came out in 1981. Most of it was recorded a year previously but a money dispute between the band and Muddy’s manager put a halt to the sessions. The album was filled out with outtakes from Hard Again. One of the highlights of the record was the stoner ode Champagne & Reefer, which became a blues band staple in short order. The album - and Muddy’s recording career, as ill-health slowed him down until he died in 1983 - ends with another stone classic, “No Escape From The Blues.”
Friends and neighbors, that’s how you top off a career.

A Study in Sherlock: Stories Inspired by the Holmes Canon by Laurie R. King
What would happen if you asked eighteen top writers who don't normally write about Sherlock Holmes to write about Sherlock Holmes? What if you wrote to them, saying: In 19th century England, a new kind of hero--a consulting detective--blossomed in the mind of an underemployed doctor and ignited the world's imagination. In the thirteen decades since A Study in Scarlet first appeared, countless variations on that theme have been played, from Mary Russell to Greg House, from 'Basil of Baker Street' to the new BBC Holmes-in-the-internet-age. We suspect that you have in the back of your mind a story that plays a variation on the Holmes theme... And what if these great writers read that proposal and decided that yes, they did have that kind of tale in the back of their minds? The result is A Study in Sherlock, Stories Inspired by the Sherlock Holmes Canon, with stories by Alan Bradley, Tony Broadbent, Jan Burke, Lionel Chetwynd, Lee Child, Colin Cotterill, Neil Gaiman, Laura Lippman, Gayle Lynds and John Sheldon, Phillip and Jerry Margolin, Margaret Maron, Thomas Perry, S.J. Rozan, Dana Stabenow, Charles Todd, and Jacqueline Winspear.
