We Like, Are Totally Spies

When we think about shows that will appeal to boys. Action is the easiest to relate. Something like; Ben 10, American Dragon Jake Long, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Justice League will be on the list. It has drama, it has fights and it's cool!

However, there has been a movement in that era where specific cartoon shows aim to get girls into action. Kim Possible, Juniper Lee, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and The Winx Club are perfect examples of such shows.

There is an odd case for more girl-centric shows. Something about the need to balance femininity with action. The show needs to feel like an action that happens to have the main characters be girls. This is where today's topic comes in. We're talking about how;

- How's the Mission, Spies? -

< Totally Spies > by Vincent Chalvon-Demersay and David Michel follows three teens; Sam, Clover and Alex from Beverly Hills living a secret life being Super Spies for WOOHP (World Organization Of Human Protection) under their boss; Jerry Lewis.

Their missions involve travelling the world. Fighting mad scientists and twisted outcasts who seek to dominate the world with style and gadgets that conceal themselves as fashionable equipment.

The trio plays specific archetypes. Sam (green) is the brains, Clover (red) is the fashionista/ boy obsessive and Alex (yellow) is the athlete and occasional nerd. Despite their differences, they share several common interests such as their love for shopping and spy skills of agility, hand-to-hand combat and espionage.

Across six seasons, the girls matured from high school to university students. Confronting the daily struggles of homework, social lives and their petty arch-enemy, Mandy.

As a vibe, < Totally Spies > fully leans into the Beverly Hills lifestyle of fabulous fashion and some familiar pop culture names of that era. The show has a mix of the James Bond type of super spy world filled with dull henchmen, high-tech machines and some tacky villains.

- Time to go to Plan B! -

The episodes are condensed into their own episode. Although there have been some arcs that follow specific villains who have a bit of history with the main characters.

Tim Scam is a former agent who went rogue against WOOHP and Terrence Lewis; twin brother to Jerry and a sore thumb to WOOHP. There also reoccurring allies as well. Brittney (cyan) who joined the team as a trainee, Dean from the three-part series < Evil Promotion Much? > and Blaine a freelance agent who dated Clover.

The conflicts, if we can even call them conflicts at all have aged rather strangely. Some of the villains commit petty crimes like kidnapping celebrities due to jealousy or act extreme. Like being anti-consumerist with the solution of destroying malls.

Yet, some are still relatable to this day such as a kid villain who is mad at his father for being busy as a commentary on how parental neglect can cause warped ideas in a child. Whatever, it's a pre-teen show. Let's not look into it too deeply.

The world of Totally Spies is also interconnected with several other shows; [The Amazing Spiez] and [Martin Mystery].

< Martin Mystery > follows Martin, a paranormal investigator for the Center with Martin's step-sister, Diana Lombard and Java the Caveman. Fighting monsters, urban legends and aliens.

According to a special crossover episode. Martin's boss; M.O.M (Mystery Organization Manager) and Jerry know each other. Likewise, in Amazing Spiez; Jerry is also the boss of the Clark siblings. Lee, Marc, Megan and Tony. Sadly, these shows were short-lived and cancelled.

It does raise an interesting point. Why is Totally Spies more popular? As a guess, I think it's because the chemistry between the characters is a lot more interesting and fun.

The three girls are best of friends and while they sometimes bicker over boys, responsibilities and opinions. They will always put their friendship and mission first above all else. It feels more real, in a superficial way.

That an actual girl would have a girlfriend group this tight-knit and if they ever become a part of something bigger than them. They would do it together.

- Here We Go Again! -

Tacky villains, cute super spy girlfriends and awesome gadgets aside. The show has a few good jokes here and there. Its art style borrows a lot from Anime and its colors are groovy to the eyes.

For a show that was meant to attract girls into action. The show has also garnered a large following from boys as well. I think another secret to the success of < Totally Spies > can also be because of its approach to the subject. Like I said in my introduction.

There is an odd case for more girl-centric shows. Something about the need to balance femininity with action. The show needs to feel like an action that happens to have the main characters be girls.

This show is a girl's show. The girls are unapologetic being girly. Doing girl things like shopping, manicure, dating and going on dream vacations but with their secret life as spies. The show balances it out with good action and is still using that girly theme to add to its gadgets.

Heck, some of the gadgets are stuff that I would personally want to have. The Jet Pack backpack, The Wind Tunnel 3000 Tornado Blast Hair Dryer, Lazer lipstick and the Compowder are on my list. Especially with its costume change function.

It's a show that embraces both ends of the spectrum and allows it to show its respective strengths rather than shy away from the themes. With the announcement that this show is going to have a season 7/ soft reboot. It does look promising with several concerns.

But I am hopeful that for a beloved show such as this. The girls will have a proper return and inspire a new generation of girls (and boys) to be < Totally Spies >

Kimberly: she's in the greasers clique, she's drummer in the music band.

Character: She loves herself and loves to manipulate people, she is very self-confident, she is also a sadist and she does not hide it, she loves to solve problems with swearing and violence.

Likes: She loves other people's suffering, she loves mechanics and riding motorcycles, she loves hip-hop, rap and rock, she loves breakdancing, she loves teasing Lefty, she loves making fun of the weak, she loves beating up people, she loves throwing dodgeballs really hard, she loves playing on drums.

Ramona: she's non clique student.

Character: She is very calm and chill only when she smokes drugs or on her medication, when she does not take medication for aggression she begins to destroy everything and beat everyone in her path, she has latent dysphoria, she behaves like a "bitch" and loves to drink and party.

Likes: She loves to tease Max with her behavior and body, she loves to smoke, she loves to drink alcohol, she loves to give wise advice, she loves to predict the future, she loves to talk about dirty things.

Hates: medications.

Blaine: she's in the jocks clique.

Character: She considers herself a commander and the boss, she considers everyone unprofessional, she is strict and sometimes arrogant.

Likes: She loves football and baseball, she loves running and doing sports in general, she loves hip-hop dancing, she loves being a leader, she loves closed clothes.

Hates: her past (her parents beat her), violence against her, being second, failure.

Frederica: she's in the townies clique, she has sister named Cassidy.

Character: She is very cheerful and creative, she is very smiling and friendly, but at the same time she is cheeky.

Likes: She loves to dance, she loves to paint graffiti, she loves Jerry, she loves to make people laugh, she loves to spread funny rumors about her sister, she loves to rap.

Hates: to be insulted, to lose a sister.

Gabriella: she's non clique student, she's in her music band, she's guitarist and singer in her band.

Character: She is depressed and insecure, she gives up very easily, she always feels hopeless, but she really feels good in the circle of the band members, she's color blind.

David Soul, who has died aged 80, stormed to fame in the 1970s as half of the television “buddies” detective duo Starsky and Hutch, who careered across Los Angeles in their red and white Ford Gran Torino, over the roofs and bonnets of other cars, and through piles of cardboard boxes.

“When the Starsky and Hutch series was showing, police on patrol duty were adopting sunglasses and wearing their gloves with the cuffs turned down,” claimed Kenneth Oxford, a British chief constable. “They also started driving like bloody maniacs.” In south London, a council lowered a wall after fans of the tyre-squealing screen action used it as a launchpad to jump on to parked vehicles.

While Paul Michael Glaser played the streetwise, cardigan-wearing, junk food-eating Dave Starsky, Soul’s character, Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson, was the quieter, yoga-loving, healthy-eating one – two cool cops looking after each other as if they were brothers.

Over five series (1975-79), they patrolled a rough area populated by muggers, drug dealers, sex workers and pimps. They also fraternised with Huggy Bear (played by Antonio Fargas), a snazzily dressed, “jive-talking” informant with his own bar.

Soul traded on his newfound stardom to return to his first love, music. He recorded the ballads Don’t Give Up on Us (1976), a No 1 in the US and UK, and Silver Lady (1977), another British chart-topper.

His television career continued, but the starring roles rarely resonated beyond his homeland. An exception was the miniseries World War III (1982), in which he played an American cold war colonel trying to avert a nuclear holocaust. It also chimed with his political and social campaigning, which included supporting the anti-nuclear movement.

He took up the tempting offer to play Rick Blaine in Casablanca (1983), a five-part TV prequel to the film classic, in the role originally played by Humphrey Bogart, but it proved a flop.

Soul found renewed success – particularly on the West End stage – after moving to Britain in the 90s. He even hit the headlines beyond the review pages in the title role of Jerry Springer the Opera (Cambridge theatre, 2004-05), taking over from another American actor, Michael Brandon, as the “shock” talkshow host.

The BBC’s decision to screen Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee’s musical, complete with thousands of swear words, transvestites, tap-dancers dressed as Ku Klux Klan members and a nappy-wearing Jesus, received more than 60,000 complaints from viewers.

Soul simply relished the chance to fulfil his “dream to play in the birthplace of English-speaking theatre” after failing to “cut the mustard” when auditioning on Broadway.

He was born David Solberg in Chicago to June (nee Nelson), a teacher who had also performed as a singer, and Richard Solberg, a Lutheran minister of Norwegian descent. His father’s work as a representative of the Lutheran World Relief organisation during the reconstruction of Germany after the second world war meant the family moved to Berlin in 1949, returning to the US seven years later to live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where David attended Washington high school.

He then acted in plays while studying at Augustana College, before moving to Mexico with his family. Influenced by his father’s work, he initially had plans to join the diplomatic service, and learned Spanish and studied Latin American history. He was also taught to play the guitar by Mexican students.

After a year, he hitchhiked to the US, landed a job singing Mexican folk songs at a coffee shop in Minneapolis and set his sights on a career in music. He also gained some acting experience with the city’s Firehouse theatre company.

While talking with friends about the metaphorical masks people wear, he came up with the idea of wearing a real one while performing so that the music stood on its own merits, and billed himself “David Soul, the Covered Man”. The William Morris Agency signed him up after hearing a demo tape, and he soon had bookings. One was in The Merv Griffin Show on TV between 1966 and 1968, when he eventually dispensed with the mask. More significantly, a talent agent spotted his acting potential.

He had a regular role in Here Come the Brides (1968-70), a comedy western series set after the civil war, as Joshua Bolt, one of the brothers running a logging company in a male-dominated Seattle frontier town and importing marriageable women.

A guest star, Karen Carlson, became Soul’s second wife (1968-77), following the dissolution of his first marriage, to Mirriam “Mim” Russeth, in 1966, three years after their wedding.

Soul was then popping up all over American TV in guest roles himself, and had a short run in 1974 as Ted Warrick, the defence lawyer’s assistant, in Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law, before wider fame came in Starsky and Hutch. By then, he was living in an “open” relationship with another actor, Lynne Marta. When he moved on to his third marriage, to Patti (nee Carnel, 1980-86), former wife of the 60s pop idol Bobby Sherman, he hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

In 1982, having already struck Patti several times, he returned home drunk one night following a day’s filming on Casablanca – which he correctly feared would bomb – and hit her repeatedly. He was arrested on a charge of misdemeanour battery, but a judge spared him jail on condition that he underwent therapy. Soul admitted to having a violent streak and, although he and Patti were reunited, the marriage was soon over.

He kept working, landing starring roles as Roy Champion in the cattle ranch soap-style drama The Yellow Rose (1983-84), the private eye of the title in the TV movie Harry’s Hong Kong (1987), and “Wes” Grayson, leading an FBI forensics team, in Unsub (1989), but his star was on the wane. Another marriage, to Julia Nickson (1987-1993), also failed, before he had a relationship with the actor-singer Alexa Hamilton.

Soul’s career was revived when in 1995 the theatre producer Bill Kenwright was looking for an American to star in the comedy thriller Catch Me If You Can on tour in Britain. He played Corban, a newlywed whose wife goes missing. There were other tours and Soul was in the West End as Hank in The Dead Monkey (Whitehall, now Trafalgar, theatre, 1998), Chandler Tate in Alan Ayckbourn’s Comic Potential (Lyric, 1999-2000) and Mack in Mack & Mabel (Criterion, 2006).

In between, he had one-off roles on British television, including as a locum surgeon in two episodes of Holby City (2001 and 2002), a Boston detective helping to investigate his wife’s murder in Dalziel and Pascoe (2004) and a criminology lecturer in Inspector Lewis (2012). Soul and Glaser had cameos in the 2004 film spoof Starsky & Hutch, alongside Ben Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch. In the same year, Soul was granted British citizenship.

He is survived by his fifth wife, Helen (nee Snell), whom he married in 2010, and five sons and a daughter.

Day 1: Plead

Thanks to @bitbybitwrites for sharing this challenge with me, it's always fun when we do these challenges together! And to @klaineadvent for putting this Klaine fun together.

A day late, but here is Day 1 - plead:

It’d been a long day, and all Kurt wanted to do was put their seven-year-old twins to bed after an eventful day of Christmas shopping (and fighting off the urge to impulse shop for himself), and stuff his face with Ben and Jerry’s until his gorgeous husband arrived home. He then had plans to drag him upstairs to their bedroom, rip off his clothes, and devour him all. Night. Long.

Well, at least until midnight.

1:00 am tops. Their twins still tend to wake up at the crack of dawn.

It had been an hour past when he was due home, Kurt already having gone through a pint and a half of Minter Wonderland drizzled in chocolate syrup and whipped cream, when Blaine walked through the door of their very elaborate Christmas-decorated brownstone.

“I’m in the kitchen,” Kurt called out, having heard Blaine walk through their front door.

Blaine removed his jacket and hung it on the coat rack along with his work satchel, and walked toward the kitchen, undoing his bow tie. He found Kurt sitting on an island stool, in their kitchen, spoon hanging from his mouth, hunched over casually reading the latest holiday edition of Vogue.

“Hey baby, sorry I’m late.” Blaine greeted tiredly, tie undone, unbuttoning the first two clasps of his shirt. He leaned in gracefully to kiss Kurt on his lips, Kurt removing the spoon from his mouth, and meeting Blaine’s mouth on queue.

“Mmm, you taste delicious,” Blaine said flirtatiously, going in for another kiss.

Kurt chuckled as Blaine opened the refrigerator to grab a beer.

“I hadn’t intended on eating a pint and a half of this stuff, but - I was sitting here all alone, with no one to keep me company,” he said teasingly. “So, you know,” he shrugged, “when in Rome!” Kurt raised his dessert in a mock toast and returned to looking at his magazine.

Blaine was casually leaning his hip against the counter. “You’re so dramatic,” he said smiling at Kurt, as he brought the bottle of alcohol to his lips.

They were both feeling the itch, sexual tension now in full effect as their intimate needs had taken a backseat when the holiday season approached.  This was the busiest time of year for them both, juggling home life, work, and kids. Life got busy, and by the time they got home each evening, they didn’t have enough energy to take care of each other the way they loved. The way they always craved. 

“You’d be too if you spent the day fighting off savage Christmas shoppers with two 7-year-olds,” he replied, with mock snark and a flirtatious side-eye. Kurt flipped the page of his magazine as Blaine stood by the counter, seductively drinking his beer. Even though his glance was quick, Blaine could see his pleading eyes. He heard him loud and clear.

“Kids asleep?” Blaine asked taking another long sip.

“Of course,” Kurt replied. “They were exhausted by the time we got home. I made them a quick dinner, they took a bath, and knocked out in record time.” He flipped to another page.

Blaine placed his drink on the counter, proceeding to slowly untuck his shirt from his chinos. He sensuously ran his fingers through his hair, breaking apart those gelled-down curls. Kurt loved it when he did that.

Blaine walked over to Kurt, hugged him from behind, and began peppering his neck and jaw with delicate kisses.

“Have you taken a bath?” He asked in a low sultry voice.

“No. I was hoping we’d get dirty together and then soak in one after.” 

“After all these years, I love that you still feel the need to flirt with me.” Blaine chuckled.  “You know I’m a for sure thing, right?”

“But flirtatious foreplay is so much more fun,” Kurt smirked. “We’ve been so busy the last few weeks, I thought we could do with a little ice cream play. I also bought some chocolate syrup and whipped cream." Kurt winked. 

“Chocolate syrup, huh? You really do mean business,” Blaine teased.

“Mhm,” Kurt nodded, turning his head just enough to catch Blaine’s lips for a more heated kiss.

“Well then, Mr. Hummel-Anderson,” he said with one more lip smack. "Let’s get this ice cream social started.”

Guys! Guys!

I was going through old flash drives searching for a file when I came across the first few paragraphs I wrote for a story I originally called, "FireStarter." I completely forgot about this!

Originally, I had an idea for a story where Blaine has the ability to start fires with his mind when he gets frustrated or upset. This idea eventually turned into APR.

It's not much but I'm putting it here so it can live on my blog.

The first incident happened when Blaine was 8.

He’d been determinedly rubbing his sticks together for over ten minutes, desperately trying to create a spark of fire. His frustration level grew as the other boys around him whooped as meager sparks formed before their eyes. Blaine threw down his sticks and went to fetch two more. Five minutes later he felt a mixture of happiness due to friendship, yet a deeper feeling of failure as his friend Paul gasped in awe as his own sticks produced small flames. Blaine focused on the sticks in front of him and rubbed away, his small fingers starting to hurt from gripping so tightly. He was painfully aware that everyone around him had managed to create their fires. What was wrong with him?

“Jeez. Blaine’s so stupid he can’t even rub sticks together the right way.” Blaine burned with embarrassment as he heard Colin’s smug voice followed by the laughter of the other boys. Paul threw a stick at Colin. “Shut up!”

“Hey! That’s not how Boy Scout’s conduct themselves. Paul, apologize to Colin.”

“Aw, that’s not fair! He was being mean to Blaine.”

“Paul, apologize. Now.”

Paul stood up and reluctantly shook Colin’s hand. “Sorry.” Colin gave him a smug smile.

Blaine felt Scout Master Thomas’s hand on his shoulder. “Blaine, relax your grip some. As a matter of fact why don’t you take a break? This doesn’t have to happen today.”

Blaine shook his head and continued to focus. Yes, this did have to happen today. There was no way he was going to be the only one to not start a fire.

“Blaine…son, let go of the sticks. Stop.”

Blaine kept rubbing the sticks together.

“Blaine, stop.”

Blaine kept rubbing.

“Blaine! Stop right now!”

Blaine stopped but while there were no sparks in the little pile of wood and newspaper in front of him, sparks seemed to ignite within him. He felt a strong burning sensation in his chest. He started shaking just a bit. He stared at the pile in front of him and….

WOOSH!

A flash of flame exploded, rising about a foot in the air. Everyone jumped back except for Blaine who sat staring at the fire in front of him. The Scout Master swore under his breath as he grabbed Blaine’s shirt and pulled him away from the flame. Assistant Scout Master Jerry appeared out of nowhere with a bucket of water he had prepared just in case. He quickly doused the flames as the boys chatted excitedly and stared at Blaine with impressed expressions.

“Are you okay?” asked Paul, his voice filled with awed concern. Blaine nodded despite the fact that he was definitely not okay. He was terrified.

How did he do that?

“That was amazing!” Paul gushed. “Your fire was the best! All that rubbing made it huge.”

Blaine slowly nodded. Yes. Sure. Of course. That’s what happened. He rubbed the sticks together for so long and so hard that it created a really big fire.

Yes.

That’s exactly what happened.

That night Blaine excitedly told his parents about the fire. His father smiled and nodded, his eyes filled with pride.

His mother did not look impressed.

“So, the fire started because you rubbed the sticks together, right?”

Blaine looked thoughtfully at his mother. “Well…yeah. How else would it start?”

Jenna looked at her son and forced a smile. 

“No other way, dear. There’s no other way.”

The parallel of Frederick ripping his sleeves to cover Gwen's wound and then Gwen ripping Maria's blanket to save Leland.

WH. OHHHHHH. OH DAMN OH MAN. YOOOOOOOO. I DID NOT EXPECT THAT. Wait so I'm guessing here that Isolde forged Leland's signature? But when did she send that letter? Was it sent during the war? If yes then the process is really quick! It's just one day.

Honestly I'm so glad Isolde wrote that she's going to take the throne until her sons are ready because they CANNOT rule the whole damn kingdom right now with that mental state. And I honestly love the idea of all of them ruling the kingdom instead of just one of them.

WAIT WAIT WAIT This is what I'm getting but correct me if I'm wrong. I'm guessing Leland signed on the pastry catalogue and gave it back to isolde and that's how Isolde can forge his signature? That's actually really smart.

And she kinda bribed (more like raising their salary, really) the Parliament so they'd accept it right away!! Also by giving them more power! HAH And there's more power for Lavern lmaooo

So I'm guessing he's going to prison then? Fancy words sometimes gets me mixed up.

So, uh...Blaine? Yeah where is he? I'm theorizing that the tent Nell moved will save him but he should still have some injuries. And the chances are he will break at least one bone. I don't think tents are that soft. But I'm willing to hope that he will be perfectly fine....physically.

My female version of Jerry is a bit different from the original male Jerry. She is the head chief of the W.O.O.H.P, the spies' friend/boss, whenever she needs the spies for a mission during her Save The Day alarm drill after class.

For the design I turned from male to female, Jeri as a beautiful, slim, dark brown tan skinned Douglas woman in her mid 30s' with curly/straight dark auburn brown hair in a medium length bob cut, spot narrow dark brown eyebrows, thick eyelashes, hazel brown eyes, brown heart shaped lips and wearing dark red eyeshadows, a red lipstick on her lips, a light gray shirt with a black blazer with 3/4 sleeves and a collar sliver W enmal pin on the left side of her collar, a knee length black skirt, light gray tight and gray high heels. She also wears a golden necklace with a W charm around her neck, golden hoop earrings and a few golden bracelets.

Jeri and the spies of W.O.O.H.P have been spying on Clover, Alexia and Sammie since the girls were children, she knew right away the girls had everything it needs to be a spy. Although she informed her co worker Mr. George Pebbleton while she worked on her papers and she dislike Mandy and the other mean girls' cruel and poorly behaviors and bullying Sammie all of the time for protecting her and her friends. When she was a spy and became chief of the W.O.O.H.P, she is trained highly in martial arts after her father's retirement and she and Cameron are very intelligent in technology.

She was born in England, her father Lawrence Lewis who was a former head chief as his retirement by taking his place in society, her mother and her brothers, her brother Charles Lewis II married her sister in law and her niece Britney who go to school with her friends as freshman year. She dislike her evil brother is being mean to her. She prefer not to talk about Trent.

I started my remake of Totally Spies and continued next.
