Steamy Saturday
". . . she found out she had to have special clearance from the White House and the State Department."
"Why was her patient so hush-hush he could be referred to only as Mister X?"
"This was a man who had terrorized the White House, a man even the President was afraid of . . . ."
Nurse Lily and Mister X by Diane Frazer, published in New York by Pocket Books in 1961, has more intrigue than steam, but with its snappy noir dialogue and plot, you almost forget this is a nurse romance novel. There's the brilliant and cantankerous British diplomat and master international negotiator Sir Edgar; the self-confident and stunningly gorgeous nurse Lily Sorenson; and the dashing young newspaper reporter Andrew Carlton who is smitten by Nurse Lily, and she with him, but as a professional journalist doggedly pursues the mystery of the secret patient at the Manhattan hospital -- even if it means compromising his budding relationship with Lily.
Along the way, there is subterfuge and twists. Will Sir Edgar be found out and compromised before he is able to negotiate a major treaty that may affect global politics for generations? Will Andrew nail the scoop of his career? More importantly, can Lily and Andrew's romance survive it all? This novel is such a decent read, that for once we will not reveal the outcome.
Diane Frazer is the pseudonym for Dorothy Fletcher who published numerous nurse romances under her pen name. We couldn't find out much about Fletcher, but we do know that the cover art is by Jerry Allison, the prolific illustrator of pulp novel covers, especially hard-boiled detective novels.

The crickets
Been learning more abt Buddy and his freinds so thought I’d draw the OG cricks.
I think Jerry Allison came out the best. I like the way I stylized him. Especially in the eyes. His overall expression. I think it’s just a good reference pic.
There’s like 0 pics of Niki. 0. None. Well, no good/high res/good for ref pics. It was hard to find for Joe too. Maybe Jerry is just a fan fav.

♫ That'll Be The Day ♫ (Redux)
Tonight I am suffering from well below freezing temperatures and exhaustion, so while I was planning a new song, I think instead I will revert to one I’ve played only once back in August 2020. I have added a video I found that gives some background and history of Buddy Holly and his all-too-short life I thought you might find interesting. I’m pondering doing another week-long artist series…

Books of the Spring (April-May 2024)
I started this back in June but then life got busy again...books of the summer will be out soon, but for now: here's some books I read way back in April and May that I think other people should read too!
Maniac Magee (Jerry Spinelli): I think I read this when I was a kid, but long enough ago that I forgot most of it. Anyway, picked it up at a thrift store to put in the camp bookshelf of free books to borrow/take, and wanted to (re)read it first. It's good! A good book for kids (or adults) to read. Silly and exaggerated in the way good middle grade fiction is, but also about racism and family and having a home. Sweet, and a good way to get you thinking.
The Right Sort of Man (Allison Montclair): Yet another first in a historical mystery series, this one following a pair of women who have started their own business in post-WWII London - a matchmaking agency. Except they also keep getting caught up in solving murder mysteries. I enjoyed it; the dialogue and actions are snappy and funny, but the characters also have and acknowledge real struggles (they go to therapy! unusual in a 1950s-set book but handled realistically). I have now read through the latest published book and look forward to more.
Tomboy (Liz Prince): A graphic novel memoir of the author's gender experiences. Not earth-shattering, but I have long enjoyed a book that makes me feel less alone in my own experience of gender. Obviously I'm not exactly Liz Prince (for one thing, based on the illustrations, she's maybe willing to wear skirts as an adult but wasn't as a kid? And I am the exact opposite) but a lot of what she had to say struck home for me. And it's good for books to exist that showcase a small part of the diverse ways people are.
To Shape a Dragon's Breath (Moniquill Blackgoose): This one has done some of the rounds on tumblr for sure, but I did enjoy it, and posted something about it here. An interesting fantasy world that's obviously this world but with alternate history where the Norse colonized the Americas. (And the dragons, that's different too). I don't usually reach for YA fantasy anymore, but I will be looking for the sequel to this one when it comes out.
#this got even more belated than intended#have some#book recs#books of the month#to shape a dragon's breath#is especially still sticking out to me as a book to rec to others; so a good one to include in a list like this#it's interesting to look back from this many months on#moniquill blackgoose#maniac magee#jerry spinelli#the right sort of man#allison montclair#tomboy#liz prince

📽️ Hairspray (2007)
I’m shocked at myself for never having written about this movie before because I love it! I’ve never seen any stage version of this musical, so this to me is perfection. The girl that plays Tracy is phenomenal, and John Travolta is pretty perfect in his part. Honestly, everyone in this movie was amazing. I could watch it over and over.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (many sexual innuendoes but many if not all will go over kids’ heads)
Language: 2/10 (not bad at all in the language department)
Violence: 1/10 (anything remotely construed as violence is slapstick comedy)
Overall rating: 9/10

the clock ... even everyday, the constant ticking countdown to aziraphale and crowley's relationship, because it's inevitable - their relationship is unsustainable
because their ideologies are so different - crowley wants to run and preserve their relationship, create their own eden on alpha centuri. aziraphale wants to fix the world because he believes it can be saved - just remove those few bad apples (just like the Fall. Which - Crowley fell, and nothing was fixed by this, it's not the angels that are the problem, it's the system, and he doesn't believe it can be fixed). their beliefs are in direct conflict with each other
and they have in common their love of humanity, and the world, and of course - their love for each other
but simply loving each other is not enough.
they need to reconcile their beliefs, accept that the system is the problem, that you can't just keep running forever
because until then, it'd always be a countdown until the next Thing, where they need to choose, and they've shown again that they won't choose each other (at first. clocks run full circle; records run full circle. they will choose each other again)
#apparently that ticking in everyday is jerry allison slapping his knees? but it sounds a LOT like a clock/countdown to me#good omens#gos2#good omens 2#good omens spoilers#ineffable husbands#aziraphale#crowley#good omens meta#more thoughts really but anyway#meta#go meta#late.txt

Mark O'Connor violin, Tony Rice guitar, Jerry Douglas dobro, Sam Bush mandolin, Mark Schatz bass and Bela Fleck banjo performing “Freeborn Man“. Merlefest early 1990's. ________________________ Freeborn Man Songwriters: Keith Allison and Mark Lindsay
I was born in the Southland
Some twenty odd years ago
I ran away for the first time When I was only four years old
I'm a freeborn man My home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
I got a lady in Cincinnati
A woman in San Antone
And I always love the girl next door But any place is home
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
And I got me a worn out guitar
I carry an old tone sack
And I hocked it about two hundred times But I always get it back
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
Well, you may not like my appearance
You may not like my song
You may not like the way I talk But you sure like the way I'm gone
I'm a freeborn man Home is on my back I know every inch of highway Every foot of back road Every mile of railroad track
I was born in the Southland
