The way Jerrica Benton from Jem and the Holograms seemingly runs the foster home, the music company, and charity foundation all by herself on top of being Jem, the glamorous lead singer, everyone (including her own family and boyfriend!) keep making comments about her being unfun and like a wet blanket is so nasty 😒

Rewatching jem with a friend of mine has really opened my eyes to how much Jerrica is clearly unwell. Love her. She and Anthy exist in the same space in my brain.

hey man why did they frame it like this when this is ostensibly a song about Jem flirting with Rio (who is her boyfriend) (well he's Jerrica's boyfriend and Jem is Jerrica in disguise but he doesn't know that and she won't tell him for some stupid reason? but she keeps flirting with him and kissing him and implicitly fucking him and everything and getting upset that he's cheating on her. with herself. which like ok I get that the cheating is upsetting. but you started it. and it is still you he's cheating with. I think Jem/Jerrica is a horrible person btw) what I'm getting at is wow I need to do a rewatch of this show and maybe I was not making up the intense lesbian vibes that exist in my head

For Mun: What is your opinion of Rio from “Jem”?

Rio, at least the 80s version, was sorta the guy that a lot of little girls of that time idealized as boyfriend material. He was always thinking about Jerrica (and Jem) and was possessive and defensive of her in both forms without knowing the two were one in the same. Where the possessiveness might seem (and is in many cases) a turn off these days, the show back in the 80s made it seem charming. Especially to little girls dreamed of a hot/cute boyfriend. Personally, I didn't like him too much as a kid or even now. I always liked Riot more, both in personality and ascetics. I also think he paired a bit better with Jerrica (at least as Jem) as they both had musical passions but that's more preference.

That said, Rio does have his good points being a fairly steadfast and mostly loyal friend. He's always willing to help out, but they have that drama angle where he is torn between Jerrica and Jem and feels like he is cheating because he likes both. Something that could have been resolved with Jerrica trusting him with her secret. (Though I recall it was addressed that he is attracted to Jerrica in all her forms just doesn't realize these other forms are the same girl, but something internally tells him they are without telling him.) Then again, Rio has a lot of trust issues himself. Looking back, I find him a bit controlling, and that is something I dislike about the character, but I also understand this as a product of the times and understand what they were going for. He has a temper, sure, but he isn't physically abusive or anything and he seems to be the only one that sees the Jerrica side of her and is instantly attracted to her as Jerrica.

This could also be because he was a childhood friend of Jerrica's before they ended up dating. That's why I give Riot more leeway with him, not really paying much mind to Jerrica. I think that if the writers had allowed for Rory to actually get to know Jerrica, that could have changed, but that just wasn't what the writers wanted. 🤷‍♀️

my costume teacher was talking abt jem and the holograms today and i remembered how much i loved that show as a kid (and honestly still do, it was iconic) and now im like I WANNA MAKE A PIZZAZZ COSPLAY (she was my fav as a kid and in a perfect world would've been enemies to lovers with jerrica) but like where would i even wear it to... a comic con i guess cuz nobody at my usual anime cons would know wtf is going on. would be a fun halloween costume too
