Innovation helps Pangasinan’s MSMEs survive
#PHnews: Innovation helps Pangasinan’s MSMEs survive
DAGUPAN CITY – Most micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Pangasinan have introduced product innovations to adapt to the new normal and survive the challenges caused by the pandemic.
Millennial entrepreneur Raymond Iglesias Rusell of Denmark Candles said Thursday he introduced new designs to his candles since the celebration of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day this year would be different.
Rusell made his candles more appealing so they could be used as a house décor or more than their sole intended purpose.
“During (the) lockdown, I switched from selling candles to selling different products, such as face masks, face shields, and even as a delivery guy,” he said in an interview.
Rusell noted that the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) provincial office has been “very helpful” as it buys products from him.
“I also watched webinars of DTI. These are very helpful during this time,” he said.
Janice Gonzales of Jensmith Bag Shop said her company has shifted from making school bags to face masks since there are no face-to-face classes this year.
Gonzales said the provincial government and the local government unit of Bugallon town where she resides have commissioned her company to produce cloth face masks during the lockdown.
“Our project with them was already done but the DTI has commissioned us to make face masks again as part of the national government’s project to provide cloth face masks to the poor people. For that, I am very thankful,” she said.
Joy Perez of Crafters Joy CornHusk Products said her company modified its cornhusk products into baskets and planters as these are the demands of the market these days.
“From handbags, we are now making more planters and baskets,” Perez said, acknowledging that the pandemic has affected her business drastically that she had to lay off some of her employees.
“It was hard because I need to fetch them from their houses daily and we have lost the source of our marketing, such as the trade fair. There were no buses to deliver our products and most of our clients are in Manila,” she added.
Perez, however, said she could not give up and close her business because more than a hundred families depend on it, prompting them to innovate their products.
“Right now, some are working from their homes while some are in the factory,” she said.
Meanwhile, Patricia Morente of Sopresa Products added pastries to her business to boost sales during the pandemic.
“I started selling different varieties of bread in our neighborhood on top of our pineapple tart and vegetable chips products and it was a hit. It helps us with our needs during this challenging time,” Morente said.
Small Medium Enterprise Development Council - Pangasinan president Howard Chua-Cham urged his fellow entrepreneurs to have “hope, be resilient, and persevere over challenges.”
The DTI launched on Thursday the Gawa’d Pangasinan trade fair and exhibit to help the province’s MSMEs in the province and honor their resiliency.
“Innovate products and marketing so that products can reach consumers,” DTI-Pangasinan Director Natalia Dalaten told MSMEs.
Dalaten added that the DTI is “so proud of the MSMEs for not giving up.” (PNA)

Studio Project #3: Collaborative Gift
Our third project for the semester is a collaborative project which you are working on in groups to create and present a custom made object to a particular person. The process of making, and presenting the gifted object is archived and we will view documentation of your projects for our critique later this week, on Thursday November 17th. This custom made object should incorporate the natural dye process we are exploring during class in some way.
Your collaborative teams are:
Willy, Lia, Kylie and Marco
Liz, Marlene, Jerry Bridgett, and Garrett
Brianna, Kompheak, Angelica, and Amanda
Erika, Fara, Guillermo, Lisette and Kaclica
Looking forward to seeing what you come up!

The Collaborative gift project was largely inspired by a book I’m currently reading about Gift Economies. The book has long inspired artists and is of interest to me as I’m thinking about how to create meaningful artworks that might exist outside of the traditional exchange of the art market. The book is called The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in Modern World by Lewis Hyde.
Another inspiration of this project came from looking at A Stitch in Time, a project by artist David Medalla, revisited this past summer at Venus over Manhattan.
more project inspiration: A Pot for a Latch, a project by artist Pia Camil that showed recently at the New Museum. This project is currently on view closer to us, at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis through February 19th, 2017. Check it out here.
Finally, this project was also inspired by a recent Los Angeles exhibition by artist Jen Smith called The Body is Free at Commonweath & Council.

DTI launches ‘Gawa’d’ Pangasinan trade fair
#PHnews: DTI launches ‘Gawa’d’ Pangasinan trade fair
DAGUPAN CITY – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Pangasinan provincial office has launched the Gawa’d Pangasinan trade fair and exhibit to support and honor the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) amid the pandemic.
“Gawa’d (a Pangasinan term) means made in Pangasinan as the exhibitors are from the province and their products are all made from the province as well. It can also mean Gawad (Filipino word) as in honoring the MSMEs for their resilience as they continue with their business despite the trying times,” said DTI provincial director Natalia Dalaten in an interview on Thursday.
Balaten said this was the first trade fair initiated by the agency since the pandemic to help the MSMEs in the province showcase their different products.
There are 66 MSMEs exhibitors; 40 of them are members of the Pangasinan Entrepreneurs Association Inc. while the 26 are members of the Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. in Region 1 (Ilocos).
“The area where they display and sell their products was provided for free by the SM Center Dagupan. They did not pay any fee, it is for free from Oct.1 to 30,” Dalaten said.
The trade fair showcases Pangasinan MSME products ranging from handicrafts, woodcrafts, bamboo crafts, candles, native and processed foods made from known products of the province such as milkfish, fish paste, and mango, among others.
Gawa'd Pangasinan trade fair showcases handicrafts and other products that are produced in the province.
Pangasinan delicacies are also available at the trade fair.
“We also asked the MSMEs to even the price since they did not pay any fee for this trade fair,” she said.
Raymond Iglesias Rusell of Denmark Candle in Bayambang town thanked the DTI and SM Center Dagupan for initiating the trade fair.
“This is a very good event for us. DTI always finds ways to help us (MSMEs) even during lockdown. They conduct webinars to keep us updated and they also help us as they buy products from us to keep us afloat,” he said.
Janice Gonzales of Jensmith Bag Shop of Bugallon town shared the same sentiment.
“The trade fair is very helpful to us especially for businesses like ours who are most affected since there is no face to face classes. We are hoping that since we are at a mall, there will be people who will buy our products even if it is not their necessity but just because they like it,” she said.
Joy Perez of Joy Crafters Cornhusk Products said the exhibit will help them sell their products and test the market on how they could innovate their existing products and to determine the direction of their businesses.
“We thank the DTI, ma’am Natalia Dalaten for fighting for us during this time,” she said. (PNA)
