YA Horror anthology round up for October 😁👍
All These Sunken Souls: A Black Horror Anthology - 10 stories, each of which pulls inspiration from tropes across the horror genre (demon possession to serial killers to the zombie apocalypse). Big names include Kalynn Bayron, Ryan Douglass, Liselle Sambury, and Joelle Wellington.
Our Shadows Have Claws - 15 stories, all inspired by mythologies from across Latin America. A majority of the stories make use of Spanglish, which can be great for bilingual readers. Big names include Julia Alvarez, Yamile Saied Méndez, Claribel A. Ortega, and Jenny Torres Sanchez.
Man Made Monsters - 18 stories, all written by Andrea Rogers. While each story is a standalone that pulls from across the horror genre, the collection chronologically follows several generations of the same Cherokee family.
His Hideous Heart - 13 retellings of Edgar Allen Poe classics. Each story includes the original alongside the retelling, which makes it especially useful in schools. Big names include Kendare Blake, Rin Chupeco, Tessa Graton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Amanda Lovelace, Marieke Nijkamp, and Emily Lloyd-Jones.
Through the Woods - 5 horror comics by Emily Carroll, leaning into the kind of stories you may normally associate with old school fairy tales. This one is an oldie (2014) but a goodie, especially if you want to offer some great art to struggling readers.
Other notable collections: Night of the Living Queers, The Black Girl Survives in This One, and It Came From The Closet (this one is entirely essays reflecting on horror stories, includes Carmen Maria Machado)

Book Review - Our Shadows Have Claws
Trying to catch up on some older Netgalley reviews!
This is a compilation of Latin American monster stories by YA authors - many known names as well as new writers. I’m a little late as it’s past Halloween but this is a great anthology for any season. Note that it isn’t billed as horror stories - while some of them are a bit creepy depending on your tolerance, others are tales involving folkloric creatures and legends, so exactly that: Latin American monster stories.
The stories vary in length and at 15 total, this a great volume to pick up and read a story every once in a while. From Haitian lougarou to Columbian la patasola to completely original creatures, this anthology is a rich bundle of creativity and culture.
My favorite, while not at all creepy, was probably Blood Kin by Ari Tison, a captivating tale of family, heritage, and eco-exploitation where the real monsters are the evil oil companies.
Other favorites were the opening tale, The Nightingale and the Lark by Chantel Acevedo, a Romeo and Juliet forbidden romance in Cuba with a monster-hunting twist; Dismembered by Ann Davila Cardinal, a horrifying but touching tale set in Puerto Rico; Beware the Empty Subway Car by Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite, an emotional and lovely-written take on the lougarou legend; Leave No Tracks by Julia Alvarez, a feminist-focused story of finding magical heritage.
The Other Side of the Mountain by Claribel A. Ortega is unique for being the only male protagonist in the collection, otherwise the stories exclusively feature Latina teens. ¿Dónde Está el Duende? by Jenny Torres Sanchez is arguably the creepiest of the stories, next to Dismembered.
Altogether this was a very high-quality collection of spooky stories, also made interesting by being spread across a wide variety of locales in both Latin America and the United States. Each story also has its own illustration, which were a nice touch and added to the atmosphere.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 5 stars

I like to read books. And I read quite a lot of books, I think. In the Past year, I read a total of 123 full length books, and so I decided to pick my top 10 and write them down, in case anyone wants recommendations. I would do at least some research on all of these before reading, because most of them contain topics that could be very triggering.
The Girl In The Castle by James Patterson.
This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
We Are Not From Here by Jenny Torres Sanchez
Loveless by Alice Oseman
We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia
Kaleidoscope by Brian Selznick
One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus
Odd One Out by Nic Stone
Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron
I also read a few graphic novels and my favorite was Long Way Down: The Graphic Novel by Jason Reynolds, Illustrated by Danica Novgorodoff(I would also recommend the novel, but I couldn't put it on the list as I did not read it in 2023).
My favorite poetry book I read was The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba’s Struggle for Freedom by Margarita Engle.

The Collectors
The Collectors: Stories ed. by A.S. King
this book won the Printz this year (the first anthology to win that award, i think?) and i've always liked King's work, so i thought i'd give it a go! turned out to be hit or miss for me, but with more hits and partial hits than misses, so overall a quick and quirky read.
all of the stories center around collecting and collections, mostly in intriguing and creative ways. there's a solid range of styles and approaches, some contemporary, some surreal, some more fantastical; it's a mix that i think gives it a wider appeal, though it also means maybe the stories are hit or miss for more people than just me. it won the award though, so some folks really liked it all around!
the particular standouts for me were "Play House" by Anna-Marie McLemore, "Ring of Fire" by Jenny Torres Sanchez, "La Concha" by e.E. Charlton-Trujillo, "We Are Looking for Home" by A.S. King, "A recording for Carole Before It All Goes" by Jason Reynolds, and "Sweet Everlasting" by M. T. Anderson. some familiar names to me, some i'll be seeking out more from because their stories were so great!!
the deets
how i read it: an ebook on Libby, read in about 2.5 hours! gotta say, the more time i spend mixing ebooks and egalleys and physical books, the more i like the variety and flexibility.
try this if you: dig surreality in your contemporary fiction, have ever had a weird collection, or just want a fast and pleasantly experimental read.
a bit i really liked: from "Play House," my favorite of the stories!!
At the kitchen sink, the men assumed they were talking of nothing but dishwashing liquid and scouring pads. "If you give them things," Miranda said, "they'll stay." "They're our neighbors," her mother said. "We have to be polite." She tried to give Miranda the kind of soft smile she gave everyone. But a tendon in her neck stood out, taut as the gusset on the refrigerator.

The Morning RSS - Thursday Edition (8.31.23)
August wraps today, folks. Let's send it out with a few newsy items from around the interwebs.
First. THIS. HAS. GOT. TO. STOP. Please support your libraries and librarians. No one should be afraid to go to work. via @bookriot
Now some things to lift our spirits ...
Over at Brightly, author Jenny Torres Sanchez shares the story behind her new book With Lots of Love and a family recipe, too.
Audrey at @richincolor has three books she wants to make sure you don't miss! So if you need a weekend read, check 'em out.
Last, we have a booklist of our own. I went back into the CYBILS archives (aka the database) and rounded up a collection of stories that have school front and center: friendships, first-day-jitters, new school, the whole she-bang.

Our Shadows Have Claws - Yamile Saied Méndez (Editor), Amparo Ortiz (Editor)
Chantel Acevedo, Ricardo López Ortiz (Illustrations), Courtney Alameda, David Bowles, Ann Dávila Cardinal, Mia Garcia, Gabriela Martins, Racquel Marie, Tehlor Kay Mejia, Maika Moulite, Maritza Moulite, Claribel A. Ortega, Lilliam Rivera, Jenny Torres Sanchez, Alexandra Villasante, Ari Tison
From zombies to cannibals to death incarnate, this cross-genre anthology offers something for every monster lover. In Our Shadows Have Claws, bloodthirsty vampires are hunted by a quick-witted slayer; children are stolen from their beds by “el viejo de la bolsa” while a military dictatorship steals their parents; and anyone you love, absolutely anyone, might be a shapeshifter waiting to hunt. The worlds of these stories are dark but also magical ones, where a ghost-witch can make your cheating boyfriend pay, bullies are brought to their knees by vicious wolf-gods, a jar of fireflies can protect you from the reality-warping magic of a bruja—and maybe you’ll even live long enough to tell the tale. Set across Latin America and its diaspora, this collection offers bold, imaginative stories of oppression, grief, sisterhood, first love, and empowerment.

book review | We Are Not From Here
Author: Jenny Torres Sanchez
Genre: YA
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I have no words for this book, only pain and sorrow for the millions who've left their homes and braved La Bestia and the journey north. This book will give you chills--I had to put it down a few times because the beautiful, yet heartbreaking details and prose were too much to handle. This novel will check your privilege, it will help you to understand, and it will stay with you long after the last page.
Thank you Jenny Torres Sanchez for telling this story.
(I know this is a rather short review, but I honestly have no criticisms for this novel. There is a lot to unpack and I do not feel that I can convey my feelings here. Simply know that there is plenty to be gained from reading this book and nothing to lose.)

Has anyone else read “We Are Not From Here” by Jenny Torres Sanchez?
If you have, can we not only discuss how beautiful the author’s writing style is, but also the story itself? How heavy and real it is, even though the author stated how she wrote off of stories and tales from people she’s talked to and research she did?
Can we talk about how much you cried, when you cried, and why? Because I don’t cry, but I cried four times reading this stunning book.
Page after page I hungered for more, needed to know what was going to happen. Needed to know if they were going to make it. i NEEDED to KNOW.
It was a very good book, which sounds like a lackluster review, but I truthfully cannot formulate a strong enough sentence to sum up how great of a read this book was.
If you haven’t read it yet then please please please do! At the end of the book is a list of information pages and sites on immigration and questions about the story itself. It’s a heavy topic to read, so I suggest being in an okay mental space before you read so you can go crashing back down right after. it’s an unfathomable story for most of us, but a painstaking and even hopeful reality for countless others.
