The Time I Almost Died At A Concert
It was Nov. 14, 1987, and I was at the Oakland Coliseum to see The Bodeans, The Pretenders, and, yes, U-freakin’-2. Great, everyone loves a good, no, a great concert, but here’s the key point: I ALMOST DIED AT THIS SHOW. My goal was to get to the front of the stage by the time U2 started their set. It was a slow crawl to the front. During the Prentenders’ set, the crowd on the grass got tighter, sweatier, hotter. It was just uncomfortable, unbearable. Near the end of the Pretenders’ set I was within feet of the stage but the crowd was so packed, it was like floating in a sea of people. Literally, I wasn’t really standing but swaying along to the whims of the crowd’s movement from left to right to left. I felt like I was going to “drown” in this human ocean, so much so that I panicked. I quickly tried to save myself by exiting to the side. Took a while but I escaped the crowd. I think that if I had fallen, I would’ve been stomped to death. I enjoyed U2’s set from the back of the crowd. I lived. After that, I enjoyed a wealth of shows. Here’s a quick list of those shows, my lengthy resume as a nonprofessional concertgoer:

Must kolmnurk & must barett
2015. aastal oli tabelis 5 soolokitarristi, kelle muusika läks otse veeni – Lady Lamb, Courtney Barnett, Laura Marling, Noveller, Colleen Green. Sel aastal – Lindsey Troy (Deap Vally), PJ Harvey, Vanessa de Michelis (Post), Mitski, Helen Money, kes mängib tšellot nagu elektrikitarri + bassimängija Esperanza Spalding. Trummaritest on lemmikud Julie Edwards (Deap Vally), Jiulian Gonçalves (Post), Sayaka Himeno (Nisennenmondai), Fay Milton (Savages), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Nyasi Matingou (The Ghost Ease). Duosid oli 2015. aastal tabelis 3 – Pale Honey, Pega Monstro ja Deradoorian. Seekord on üks lemmikuid Deap Vally ja Brasiiliast pärit instrumentaalne bänd Post, kes ise nimetavad oma žanrit ‘let’s talk about gender’. Triosid on 4 – Skinny Girl Diet, Nisennenmondai, The Ghost Ease, The Coathangers.
Nii Kathleen Hanna (The Julie Ruin), Solange, Jehnny Beth (Savages front-woman) kui Rio favelas kasvanud Elza Soares laulavad oma isiklikke lugusid, klassiprivileegist (Solange, Soares, Esperanza Spalding, PJ Harvey, Kate Tempest), kuidas üüri maksta (Mitski), inimõigustest, et sul oleks koht laua ääres (Solange, PJ Harvey). Soares, Mitski, Beyoncé, Kamaiyah, Lady Leshurr, Xenia Rubinos, Alicia Keys, Solange räägivad oma identiteedist, kes nad on oma juurtelt. Pärast ahistamisjuhtumit Kraftwergi kontserdil, kirjutas Solange essee “And Do You Belong? I Do”. Xenia Rubinos räpib – “You know where to put the brown girl when she’s fuckin’ it up. Where you gonna put the brown girl now she’s tearin’ it up?”, viidates Abbey Lincolni esseele “Who Will Revere The Black Woman?” (1966).
I Am Not Attending the Academy Awards”. Heliga tegelevad – Klara Lewis (field recordings), Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith (modulaarsüntesaatorid), Anna Meredith (akustiline & elektrooniline). Ja kui teile meeldib bändi Lunachicks albumid “Luxury Problem” (1999) või “Sushi Ala Mode”(1993, sealt näiteks lugu “More than a feeling”), siis tõenäoliselt meeldib ka Skinny Girl Diet’i “Heavy Flow”. Lisaks, jumaldan minimalistlikku ‘less is more’ setup’i, ilma barokse ludistamiseta (Post, The Ghost Ease, Deap Vally, Nisennenmondai).
Näiteks peale Brexitit, kui PJ Harvey pani oma laivi Glastonburyl seisma ja luges John Donne’i “No Man is an Island”; peale USA presidendivalimisi, peale Kesha võitlust ja kohtuprotsessi ahistava produtsendiga. Seksismist muusikatööstuses on korduvalt rääkinud näiteks Grimes, Post, Kathleen Hanna, Lauren Mayberry, Jenny Hval, Janelle Monae, Björk, Solange, Warpaint, Shirley Manson, Madonna.
Tsteerides Judith Butlerit “with Trump, everyone is free to hate”. Butler küsib, kui paljud hääletasid valimistel Facebooki poliitika järgi – klikkides “like” või mitte.
Oluline oli singer-songwriter Laura Marlingu muusikasaade “Reversal Of The Muse” (season 1).
