Take Wyatt Earp as a biopic and it is a superb and fair film. Compare it to Tombstone which was more of a Western and it’s lacking the flair. However, it ends abruptly, and it is miscast. Cosner (and i am a fan) doesn’t really make a good Earp. Dennis Quaid who I am also a fan of, doesn’t make a good Doc. This was 1994, in the 80s I might have a dif...

Salt Lake Tribune lays off 38 percent of newsroom staff

FILE – The Salt Lake Tribune Monday announced cuts to over one-third of its newsroom staff. The layoffs included 14 reporters, seven editors, five support staffers, three photographers, two web producers, two columnists and one graphic artist.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Tribune cut more than one-third of its newsroom staff on Monday.

Venerable names like columnists Paul Rolly and Michelle Quist, along with veteran reporters Ellen Fagg Weist, Chris Smart, Mike Gorrell and Bob Mims were among 34 of 90 staff members who were let go or took retirement, according to the newspaper.

The layoffs included 14 reporters, seven editors, five support staffers, three photographers, two web producers, two columnists and one graphic artist.

"After almost 35 years at the Salt Lake Tribune, I got an email this morning telling me my services were no longer needed and my position was being eliminated. … It’s not a shock — we knew things were bad — but I’m still having a hard time wrapping my head around it," Gorell posted on his Facebook page Monday. "I walked into the Green Sheet Newspaper/Murray Eagle right about 44 years ago now and have known since then I was meant to be a newspaperman. It’s been a great career that I’m sad to leave."

The layoffs come six days after Tribune owner and publisher Paul Huntsman told newsroom staff about "impending changes and financial difficulties" facing the paper.

At the time, he told employees that in the two years since he acquired the paper, advertising revenues had fallen 40 percent as daily and weekend print circulation has declined, adding that he had personally covered losses for eight months after investing over $1 million to upgrade the paper’s online and digital production capabilities.

In addition to the newsroom layoffs, the paper plans to eliminate its Utah news sections on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, having already eliminated its Monday version of the local news section, its website states.

“Laying off talented and dedicated colleagues has been flat-out excruciating and represents a tremendous loss not only for this newsroom but also for our entire community,” Editor Jennifer Napier-Pearce wrote in the paper’s website. “With fewer numbers, we simply can’t be all things to all people or do things the way we used to. But losing a trusted news source, a Pulitzer Prize-winning independent voice in Utah, is absolutely not an option. Those of us who remain will continue to provide the high-quality journalism you’ve come to expect from the Tribune.”

Describing the layoffs as “horrible,” she said the "cuts are to the bone” and reiterated those leaving would receive severance and buyouts of unused vacation.

For Mims, besides losing a job he loved, he worries that "without a vibrant, independent press, our Republic is in peril. This is true for Utah, and more generally for our nation."

He also lamented the loss of institutional knowledge of so many veteran journalists but said there is hope for the future.

"It could be a deficit initially, but those who remain are bright, dedicated and motivated people," he said. "They are willing to learn, and they will."

Regarding the impact of the Tribune’s decisions on local news journalism, he was a bit less hopeful.

"As with the Deseret News, Standard-Examiner and other news organizations gutted by a changing industry, it will suffer, but I hope only temporarily," Mims said. "We are in the midst of a revolution in how we are informed; technology has outstripped an institution we took for granted. We will find answers; the alternative is unthinkable."

The Ogden Standard-Examiner announced similar layoffs last week as the newspaper let go 29 employees as it undergoes a transfer to new ownership. The northern Utah newspaper reports that the employees were told Thursday their positions weren’t included in the sale by Sandusky Newspaper Group to West Virginia-based Ogden Newspapers.

Among the terminated employees are five newsroom staff, 10 people from the circulation and customer service team, seven packagers, four salespeople and the publisher. Five other unfilled positions were also eliminated from the advertising and editorial departments.

The departures account for roughly 19 percent of the newspaper’s staff. Ogden Newspapers own publications in at least 16 states. The sale is expected to close Sunday.

The Deseret News reduced its workforce by 43 percent in 2010.

The Democrats Need a New Message

After another demoralizing loss to a monstrous candidate, Democrats need a reboot

The story of Greg Gianforte, a fiend who just wiped out a Democrat in a congressional race about ten minutes after being charged with assaulting a reporter, is déjà vu all over again.

What to make of Republican Greg Gianforte winning despite beating up a reporter on the eve of his election

How low do you have to sink to lose an election in this country? Republicans have been trying to answer that question for years. But they've been unable to find out, because Democrats somehow keep failing to beat them.

There is now a sizable list of election results involving Republican candidates who survived seemingly unsurvivable scandals to win higher office.

The lesson in almost all of these instances seems to be that enormous numbers of voters would rather elect an openly corrupt or mentally deranged Republican than vote for a Democrat. But nobody in the Democratic Party seems terribly worried about this.

Gianforte is a loon with a questionable mustache who body-slammed Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs for asking a question about the Republican health care bill. He's the villain du jour, but far from the worst exemplar of the genre.

New Yorkers might remember a similar congressional race from a few years ago involving a Staten Island nutjob named Michael Grimm. The aptly named Grimm won an election against a heavily funded Democrat despite being under a 20-count federal corruption indictment. Grimm had threatened on camera to throw a TV reporter "off a fucking balcony" and "break [him] in half … like a boy." He still beat the Democrat by 13 points.

The standard-bearer for unelectable candidates who were elected anyway will likely always be Donald Trump. Trump was caught admitting to sexual assault on tape and openly insulted almost every conceivable demographic, from Mexicans to menstruating women to POWs to the disabled; he even pulled out a half-baked open-mic-night version of a Chinese accent. And still won.

Gianforte, Trump and Grimm are not exceptions. They're the rule in modern America, which in recent years has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to vote for just about anybody not currently under indictment for serial murder, so long as that person is not a Democrat.

The list of winners includes Tennessee congressman Scott Desjarlais, a would-be "family values" advocate. Desjarlais, a self-styled pious abortion opponent, was busted sleeping with his patients and even urging a mistress to get an abortion. He still won his last race in Bible country by 30 points.

 The electoral results last November have been repeated enough that most people in politics know them by heart. Republicans now control 68 state legislative chambers, while Democrats only control 31. Republicans flipped three more governors' seats last year and now control an incredible 33 of those offices. Since 2008, when Barack Obama first took office, Republicans have gained somewhere around 900 to 1,000 seats overall.

There are a lot of reasons for this. But there's no way to spin some of these numbers in a way that doesn't speak to the awesome unpopularity of the blue party. A recent series of Gallup polls is the most frightening example.

Unsurprisingly, the disintegrating Trump bears a historically low approval rating. But polls also show that the Democratic Party has lost five percentage points in its own approval rating dating back to November, when it was at 45 percent.

The Democrats are now hovering around 40 percent, just a hair over the Trump-tarnished Republicans, at 39 percent. Similar surveys have shown that despite the near daily barrage of news stories pegging the president as a bumbling incompetent in the employ of a hostile foreign power, Trump, incredibly, would still beat Hillary Clinton in a rematch today, and perhaps even by a larger margin than before.

If you look in the press for explanations for news items like this, you will find a lot of them. Democrats may have some difficulty winning elections, but they've become quite adept at explaining their losses.

According to legend, Democrats lose because of media bias, because of racism, because of gerrymandering, because of James Comey and because of Russia (an amazing 59 percent of Democrats still believe Russians hacked vote totals).

Third-party candidates are said to be another implacable obstacle to Democratic success, as is unhelpful dissension within the Democrats' own ranks. There have even been whispers that last year's presidential loss was Obama's fault, because he didn't campaign hard enough for Clinton.

The early spin on the Gianforte election is that the Democrats never had a chance in Montana because of corporate cash, as outside groups are said to have "drowned" opponent Rob Quist in PAC money. There are corresponding complaints that national Democrats didn't do enough to back Quist.

 A lot of these things are true. America is obviously a deeply racist and paranoid country. Gerrymandering is a serious problem. Unscrupulous, truth-averse right-wing media has indeed spent decades bending the brains of huge pluralities of voters, particularly the elderly. And Republicans have often, but not always, had fundraising advantages in key races.

But the explanations themselves speak to a larger problem. The unspoken subtext of a lot of the Democrats' excuse-making is their growing belief that the situation is hopeless – and not just because of fixable institutional factors like gerrymandering, but because we simply have a bad/irredeemable electorate that can never be reached.

This is why the "basket of deplorables" comment last summer was so devastating. That the line would become a sarcastic rallying cry for Trumpites was inevitable. (Of course it birthed a political merchandising supernova.) To many Democrats, the reaction proved the truth of Clinton's statement. As in: we're not going to get the overwhelming majority of these yeehaw-ing "deplorable" votes anyway, so why not call them by their names?

But the "deplorables" comment didn't just further alienate already lost Republican votes. It spoke to an internal sickness within the Democratic Party, which had surrendered to a negativistic vision of a hopelessly divided country.

Things are so polarized now that, as Georgia State professor Jennifer McCoy put it on NPR this spring, each side views the other not as fellow citizens with whom they happen to disagree, but as a "threatening enemy to be vanquished."

The "deplorables" comment formalized this idea that Democrats had given up on a huge chunk of the population, and now sought only to defeat and subdue their enemies.

Many will want to point out here that the Republicans are far worse on this score. No politician has been more divisive than Trump, who explicitly campaigned on blaming basically everyone but middle American white people for the world's problems.

This is true. But just because the Republicans win using deeply cynical and divisive strategies doesn't mean it's the right or smart thing to do.

Barack Obama, for all his faults, never gave in to that mindset. He continually insisted that the Democrats needed to find a way to reach lost voters. Even in the infamous "guns and religion" episode, this was so. Obama then was talking about the challenge the Democrats faced in finding ways to reconnect with people who felt ignored and had fled to "antipathy toward people who aren't like them" as a consequence.

Even as he himself was the subject of vicious and racist rhetoric, Obama stumped in the reddest of red districts. In his post-mortem on the Trump-Clinton race, he made a point of mentioning this – that in Iowa he had gone to every small town and fish fry and VFW hall, and "there were some counties where I might have lost, but maybe I lost by 20 points instead of 50 points."

Most people took his comments to be a dig at Clinton's strategic shortcomings – she didn't campaign much in many of the key states she lost – but it was actually more profound than that. Obama was trying to point out that people respond when you demonstrate that you don't believe they're unredeemable.

You can't just dismiss people as lost, even bad or misguided people. Unless every great thinker from Christ to Tolstoy to Gandhi to Dr. King is wrong, it's especially those people you have to keep believing in, and trying to reach.

The Democrats have forgotten this. While it may not be the case with Quist, who seems to have run a decent campaign, the Democrats in general have lost the ability (and the inclination) to reach out to the entire population.

They're continuing, if not worsening, last year's mistake of running almost exclusively on Trump/Republican negatives. The Correct the Record types who police the Internet on the party's behalf are relentless on that score, seeming to spend most of their time denouncing people for their wrong opinions or party disloyalty. They don't seem to have anything to say to voters in flyover country, except to point out that they're (at best) dupes for falling for Republican rhetoric.

But "Republicans are bad" isn't a message or a plan, which is why the Democrats have managed the near impossible: losing ground overall during the singular catastrophe of the Trump presidency.

The party doesn't see that the largest group of potential swing voters out there doesn't need to be talked out of voting Republican. It needs to be talked out of not voting at all. The recent polls bear this out, showing that the people who have been turned off to the Democrats in recent months now say that in a do-over, they would vote for third parties or not at all.

People need a reason to be excited by politics, and not just disgusted with the other side. Until the Democrats figure that out, these improbable losses will keep piling up.

House Elections to Test Whether Trump Is Hurting Republicans

(Bloomberg) — Elections over the next month in three Republican-held congressional districts will test voters’ frustration with GOP efforts to repeal Obamacare and whether Democrats can capitalize on President Donald Trump’s sagging approval ratings.

Democrats are focusing on pocketbook issues in special election campaigns in South Carolina, Georgia and Montana — races that will preview the party’s effort to wrest control of the House from Republicans in 2018.

The Democratic candidates are remaining largely silent on the biggest issue in Washington: investigations into possible ties between Trump’s campaign and Russia, as well as the president’s dismissal of FBI Director James Comey. That’s because undecided voters are more interested in the economy than in the investigations, said Doug Usher, a managing partner at Purple Strategies, a bipartisan political consulting firm.

“People are not paying as much attention in the short term to some of these Washington scandals as you would think,” Usher said.

Democrats say their best tactic is focusing on Republican policies, including dismantling the Affordable Care Act. Meanwhile, Republicans in the special elections are standing by the May 4 House vote for health care legislation that would allow insurers to charge more for people over age 50 and for patients with pre-existing conditions and a gap in coverage. The bill also would limit Medicaid coverage for the poor.

‘Wear That Vote’

“We’re going to make sure they wear that vote everywhere that they go,” said Rep. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Health care issues are “bread and butter stuff,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said in an interview Monday. “That keeps people up at night.”

The three elections will fill seats vacated when Trump appointed Republican lawmakers to his administration. They won’t come close to shifting the balance of power in the House, which Republicans control 238-193. Montanans vote on Thursday, while the elections in Georgia and South Carolina will be on June 20.

In Georgia, the contest is for a district previously represented by Tom Price, now the Health and Human Services secretary, while the South Carolina race is for the seat formerly held by Mick Mulvaney, now Trump’s budget director. In Montana, candidates are competing for the seat that was held by Ryan Zinke, now Interior secretary.

Trump won the congressional district in Montana by more than 20 points, South Carolina by 18 percentage points and Georgia by 1.5 percentage points. Democrats have invested more in the Georgia and Montana races than in South Carolina, which they see as less competitive.

Danger for Democrats

Polls show the danger Democrats may face in criticizing Trump in districts dominated by Republican voters. A May 17 Politico/Morning Consult poll found that while Trump’s job approval rating was 43% among registered voters, it was 84% among Trump voters after he fired Comey earlier this month.

The same poll gives Democrats an edge on health care: 45% of all registered voters trust Democrats more on the issue versus 35% who trust Republicans. After the health care vote, the nonpartisan Cook Political Report moved 20 congressional districts in Democrats’ favor.

The Montana race, in an at-large district that covers the entire state, features musician Rob Quist, a Democrat who has made health care a central part of his campaign. His Republican opponent, tech millionaire Greg Gianforte, said through a spokesman early this month that he needed more information before deciding whether he favored the health legislation, while on the same day he praised the bill during a private conference call, according to the New York Times, which said it obtained a recording of the call.

“Greg Gianforte says he’s thankful for the new health care bill — the one that eliminates protections for people with pre-existing conditions and raises premiums on every Montanan that has one,” Quist says in a TV ad released last week.

‘Make Trump Angry’

Democrats also are campaigning on jobs and the economy.

The Democrat running in a district in suburban Atlanta, former congressional staff member Jon Ossoff, began his primary campaign with a pledge to “make Trump angry,” but has since pivoted to focus on the economy in his race against former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel. In one TV ad, Ossoff sits at a kitchen table and lays out his plan to cut spending, reduce the deficit and create technology jobs.

South Carolina Democrat Archie Parnell, a tax lawyer and former senior adviser at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., has been touting his knowledge of economics. “I know enough about our crazy tax code to bore you to tears,” Parnell says in a TV ad aimed at voters in a district that stretches to the state’s northern border. GOP candidate Ralph Norman, a wealthy real-estate developer and former state legislator, won the party nomination in a close race last week, the Associated Press reported.

Republicans running in these three districts are promoting party unity to boost turnout.

During a 2016 gubernatorial campaign, Gianforte distanced himself from Trump and lost against incumbent Democrat Steve Bullock by 4 percentage points. This time around he’s campaigned twice with Donald Trump Jr. and embraced the president’s “make America great again” slogan.

‘Strong Voice’

“We need someone who has a strong voice to go back to Washington and work with President Trump, not with Nancy Pelosi,” Gianforte said during a May 11 rally, referring to the House Democratic leader. “I want to help Donald Trump drain the swamp out there.”

In Georgia, Handel has offered a more lukewarm embrace of the president. She called this month’s House health care vote “the first step in a long process” and said Comey’s firing was “probably overdue.”

On May 15, House Speaker Paul Ryan, architect of the health care bill, campaigned with Handel and said the GOP needed her help to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

While Democrats say the health legislation gives them an advantage in the special elections, they’re seeking to downplay expectations by emphasizing that the districts historically favor Republicans.

If Democrats win in Montana, “It’ll be great, it’ll be absolutely marvelous,” said Senator Jon Tester, who represents the state and has appeared at campaign events with Quist. “If Republicans win this race it’s because they’re supposed to.”
