Happy to see the article I co-authored “Reading English-language haiku: An eye-movement study of the ‘cut effect’” is now available in JEMR (Journal of Eye Movement Research).
The current study, set within the larger enterprise of Neuro-Cognitive Poetics, was designed to examine how readers deal with the ‘cut’ – a more or less sharp semantic-conceptual break – in normative, three-line…

Quote
Prior to the Civil War, black and white Christians commonly worshiped together in the same congregations. As Charles F. Irons wrote in The Origins of Proslavery Christianity, 'Sunday morning only became the most segregated time of the week after the Civil War. Before emancipation, black and white evangelicals typically prayed, sang, and worshiped together.' Yet this interracial interaction did not come from the egalitarian aspirations of white Christians; rather, interracial congregations were n expression of paternalism and a means of controlling slave beliefs and preventing slave insurrection.

BENCHMARK ESSAY
post-production planning during the pre-production phase
By Maria Coumleli
Being the editor of our movie ‘Benchmark’, I had set out to achieve a certain set of goals. Although the following one was most important to me: Successfully incorporate editing techniques in order to retell the story in a compelling way, that enables an emotional response from our viewers. During the pre-production process I realized that one of my other goals was even more essential and that this was the goal I needed to achieve first if I wanted to reach my other goal of creating a compelling piece at all: Work and communicate successfully in a team. While opposing creative decisions within different departments are normal and should be embraced, they can also create challenges. This is one reason it’s so important to make sure to contribute to different parts of production, even if it’s not your main role, in order to ensure the outcome represents the entire team’s creative vision. For example, I knew my main role was going to happen during the post-production phase of the film, but I was also aware that the work I undertake during the pre-production process will dictate the entire outcome of the final product after post-production. Editors have the power to completely manipulate the viewer’s response to the story and as I have stated in my previous essay (Coumleli, 2021), they have to be precise with the planning of which tools they wish to use to exercise this power. Going hand in hand with the editor’s role of producing a captivating outcome is making sure you’re on the same page as the director when it comes to the vision. In the book First Cut: Conversations With Film Editors Oldham (2012) mentions how practically all editors feel it is a part of their role to fulfill the director’s vision. In order to achieve that, I started by analyzing the director’s stylistic inspirations for the movie, which was the work of director and editor Jean-Marc Valee, specifically his accomplishment in the shows Big Little Lies (2017) and Sharp Objects (2018). As he’s also an editor and always involved in his show’s post-production process, it helped me get inspired and I eventually decided to use some of his editing techniques for our own film. Additionally, I learned how important it is to think of post-production during pre-production if you want to create a smooth and coherent piece of work. In my first research essay (Coumleli, 2021) I have explained in more detail how I was very much intrigued by Vallee’s innovation of ‘thought-cuts’, as Valee (2020) calls them himself. They are short, silent glimpses used to portray what’s going on inside a character’s mind. I think they’re an original way of helping the viewer feel closer to the protagonists by, quite literally, showing them their subconscious. For our own movie, I was planning on using these thought-cuts as an alternative to having typical and cliche flashbacks which are used in most movies. Since our director also stressed the theme of realness and naturalism, I found that thought cuts resemble the way we process flashbacks much more than typical flashback scenes. Thought-cuts are much more realistic looking, while leaving out the usual dramatic tone, but still succeeding in aiding the viewer’s understanding of the character’s current state of mind. Another technique utilized by Valee is the use of match cuts. Match cuts are an inventive way of transitioning between scenes, by connecting them through their similarities, often either through visual or acoustic correlation. As discussed in my previous essay (Coumleli, 2021), Vallee specifically mastered match cutting to characters’ shared emotions between different scenes. This grounds the characters' completely different lives by connecting them to the same emotion. Additionally, it creates a smooth and seamless transition, as match cuts are less likely to be recognized by the audience (Smith and Henderson, 2008). In order to make sure the director was on board with my editing vision, I created a more general and simple post-production plan. Discussing these things and
agreeing on decisions can sometimes be difficult, as each creative is usually passionate about their decision-making and visual concept. This procedure is further explained by Černevičiūtė and Strazdas in their article Team management in Creative Industries (2018) , where it’s mentioned how team creativity may originate with one person’s idea or vision, but is then developed and elaborated by the team. They also mention how many teams have a lead creator, whose ideas are the main root of the project's development, like in our project, that’d be our director Shannon. I’ve realized that being fully open to constructive criticism and perhaps having to completely scratch ideas and reinventing new ones is a key challenge in this procedure. There really is no me in team, and the only way to achieve a creative outcome that satisfies the entire crew is open and direct communication. There is simply no way around that. After eventually gaining his approval and compromising together, I started planning on how to integrate this into the script and therefore help shape the cinematographer’s storyboard, as well as making sure the overall pre-production kept the editing procedure in mind while making creative decisions. While stressing how the editorial process is an integral and important part of film production, Falkenberg (1967) emphasizes that it should be anticipated when writing the script or scenario. I did so by adding my detailed post-production notes onto the script, mentioning where and when to cut, which transitions and so on. I have done this so it could also be used by the cinematographer for creating a storyboard. mentioning where and when to cut, which transitions and so on. My concept for the colour grading process was very welcomed by the production designer, as well as her notes on the clothes, make-up and set design is what further helped me flesh my visual concept out. I am grateful to have been a part of a communicative and supportive team, that also let me be a part of the decision making process considering the locations and casts. It made working together much easier and I am saddened that this film wasn’t able to come to fruition this year.
Considering my extensive editing research, my plan of incorporating the director’s aesthetic vision into the post-production process, as well as creating notes that should be considered and aid in the pre-production development of the movie, and lastly, being an integral part of helping to pick other stylistic elements, such as, locations and outfits, in addition to my team’s amazing overall collaboration, would have inevitably led to creating a successful film, I am certain of that. I am positive that we can resume production as soon as it is safe enough. Bibliography:
