thank you so much for reading angels! this season is such a wonderful time of year because of the ideas and ethos surrounding it; one of giving. this winter should be about our loved ones and those in need. whether you do something as simple as donating old clothes to charity or making christmas cards for the homeless, i would encourage everyone (myself included) to make it their mission to give back in at least one way. remember - angels are kind and generous inside and out! as we plan our gifts or think about shopping and the fun things to come let’s all take a moment to reflect on how we can give back.
love, m.
p.s it’s never too early for christmas!

Nina's Style
I made a Pintrest board for Nina so here's a post about her clothes, jewelry, accessories ect.
Nina prefers lights and colors in all her clothes. It's only when she's really upset that she wears darker colors aka mostly Johnny's clothes
She's very feminine in her style day to day. She likes lace, frills, bows, hearts, florals, pastels, dainty things.
Big top, little bottom always.
Loves skirts, she has so many now. Mini skirts are her (and Johnny's) favorites.
Big sweaters over the mini skirts always. She has amassed quite the collection of vintage sweaters. A bunch of plain colored ones, pastoral scenes and a couple funky ones like a handmade shaun the sheep sweater she found at Oxfam. She and Johnny also have matching Scotland flag sweaters his mum gifted.
No skinny jeans ever. She doesn't like the constriction. She likes her wide legged pants and wide legged pants only.
She collects socks. She likes ones with little patterns or designs like fruits or flowers or something weirder like her pair that's just symbols of good luck all over them. Crew socks are her preferred style. Everyone always gets her socks as little gifts and she loves it.
Her two favorite shoes are her plain white tennis shoes that Price bought her when she first arrived in London and a pair of black mary-janes Johnny got her. She has one pair of heels that are for special occasions, they make her the same height as Johnny and she likes when she doesn't have to stretch to kiss him.
When it's a bit chiller she likes doing a t shirt with a spaghetti or thin strapped dress over top.
Her day to day bag is just a big tote bag. She is very meticulous about what goes in it and Johnny complains that it weighs to much. She normally keeps 2-3 books plus her journal in there so he's not wrong.
She gets a lot of inspiration from pintrest and tik tok, her phone is just loaded with screenshots of social media posts.
She likes the style of jelly nails where it's almost translucent. She does pink a lot but will sometimes do a neutral or blue.
Makeup she's pretty simple. She likes lip gloss a lot and blush. She wears lipstick if Johnny is about to leave because she thinks its funny to leave him covered with it (he tries to keep it on as long as possible). She doesn't do anything impressive mostly because she never learned, just some smudged up eyeliner and mascara most days.
Perfume wise she likes florals and gourmand scents. Her favorites are Tocca's Cleopatra, Ellis Brooklyn's Sweet (Johnny's personal favorite) and a vanilla perfume oil she picked up in a boutique.
Big time lingerie girl. She likes to wear matching sets and Johnny will always oblige her when she mentions she finds a set pretty in store or online. (it's a little out of hand but Johnny always takes a set or two with him when on missions)
She doesn't have a lot of jewelry but her favorites are: a vintage gold necklace with a bar of soap charm, a pair of gold hoops, a curb chain bracelet and a 'I promise I'm going to marry you one day' ring Johnny got her for their six month anniversary.

Jelly Bags: The Hottest Fashion Trend You Can't Miss This Summer
Summer is all about embracing the sun, surf, and stylish new trends. This year, the spotlight is on jelly bags, the vibrant and versatile accessory that everyone is raving about. Perfect for any occasion, jelly bags blend fashion with functionality, making them a must-have for your summer wardrobe. Let’s explore why jelly bags from Carmen Sol are the ultimate summer accessory you can’t afford to miss.
Why Jelly Bags Are a Summer Essential
Jelly bags are crafted from eco-friendly, recyclable PVC, making them not only stylish but also sustainable. Their waterproof and lightweight nature makes them ideal for summer activities, from beach days to casual outings. Available in a plethora of colors and designs, jelly bags offer something for everyone, whether you prefer a minimalist look or something more eye-catching.
One of the most appealing aspects of jelly bags is their transparency, which adds a playful yet sophisticated touch to your outfit. Pairing them with colorful bag charms or coordinating them with a chic blue purse can create a cohesive and trendy look that stands out.
Carmen Sol: Redefining the Jelly Bag Trend
Carmen Sol has elevated the jelly bag trend with their unique designs and high-quality craftsmanship. Their collection features an array of styles, from elegant beach tote bags to compact clutches, ensuring there's a perfect jelly bag for every occasion. Here’s why you should consider adding a Carmen Sol jelly bag to your summer collection:
Beach Bags: Carmen Sol's jelly beach bags are perfect for a day by the sea. Their waterproof material keeps your belongings safe and dry, while the vibrant colors add a fun and lively touch to your beach ensemble.
Raffia Bag Alternatives: While raffia bags are popular for their natural look, they can be difficult to clean and maintain. Carmen Sol’s jelly bags offer a modern, easy-to-clean alternative without compromising on style. They bring a contemporary twist to your summer look, making them a practical choice for fashion-forward individuals.
Customization with Bag Charms: Personalization is key in fashion, and Carmen Sol understands this well. Their range of bag charms allows you to customize your jelly bag, adding a unique and personal touch. Whether you opt for initials, playful icons, or tassels, these charms make your bag distinctly yours.
Functional and Fashionable: Carmen Sol’s jelly bags are designed with both style and practicality in mind. Whether you need a spacious beach tote bag for your summer adventures or a chic blue purse for a night out, Carmen Sol has you covered. Their bags are roomy enough to hold all your essentials while maintaining a sleek and fashionable look.
How to Style Your Jelly Bag
Styling a jelly bag is a breeze due to its versatile nature. For a day at the beach, pair a bright jelly beach tote bag with your favorite swimsuit, a sun hat, and flip-flops. Add a few bag charms to inject some personality into your look. For a casual day out, a smaller jelly bag or blue purse can be paired with denim shorts, a breezy blouse, and sandals.
For evening outings, choose a sleek, monochrome jelly bag and pair it with a stylish summer dress and wedges. The transparency of the jelly bag can be used to showcase a coordinated makeup pouch or wallet, adding a sophisticated edge to your ensemble.
Jelly bags are undoubtedly the hottest fashion trend this summer, combining style, sustainability, and functionality. Carmen Sol’s collection of jelly bags stands out for its innovative designs and quality, making them the perfect addition to your summer wardrobe. Whether you’re headed to the beach, a casual day out, or an evening event, a Carmen Sol jelly bag is the accessory you need to make a statement this season.
Embrace the trend and let your style shine with Carmen Sol’s jelly bags – the ultimate summer accessory you can’t miss!

01 : what’s in her bag.
wc: 507.
sohyun exudes an air of wealth and luxury, unlike sooyeon, which is funny, because she makes more in a month than what sohyun does in a year. you’ve gotta love family money, right?
she has a collection of designer bags that she like to match with her outfits, but the bag she’s currently using is the senreve voya tote. it’s a matching bag with her mom that she bought for her mom’s 49th birthday (with.... her mom’s.......... money...................)
it contains (all in their own little compartments/pouches.):
keys: in its little pouch, so it won’t scratch any of her belongings up.
her bullet journal: a black moleskine notebook, with dotted paper. she also carries a pencil case with multiple coloured muji pens and mildliner highlighters. it’s mostly a mood tracker, and for personal and not work use.
wallet: a long, black saint laurent wallet. her banknotes are all arranged in order of monetary value, and her cards are arranged according to... colour. has a frozen yoghurt gift card she needs to use soon. has a total of 70000₩ in it, as well as $52, since she’s in the us.
makeup, stored in a cosmetics case from anya hindmarch:
has an extensive collection of skincare and makeup, and often switches the products she’s using out if she finds a brand that works better for her.
skincare: sunscreen, makeup wipes, toner pads, moisturiser cream and body lotion.
makeup: cushion foundation, powder, eyebrow pencil & powder, a liquid eyeliner, 3 tints and 4 lipsticks.
oil blotting paper, because her t-zone gets oily after a long day.
vaseline, because... vaseline. do-all salve.
3 black hair-ties.
a spray pen of daisy by marc jacobs. it’s the scent she’s used since she was a trainee at gold star. also puts on deodorant at home because who doesn’t?
her toothbrush and a small toothpaste, along with her retainer.
electronics:
her phone, a black iphone 11, on 75%. she uses an unexpectedly cute case that yujin gave her for valentine’s day, and there’s a charm that corey gave her for christmas tied to the case. does it ruin her cool, all-black, sleek aesthetic she has going? yes. does she care? no. will she glare at you if you mention that? yes.
a portable charger in its own velvet case. fully charged.
an ipad pro, and an apple pencil, which she uses to keep track of her schedules and appointments.
earbuds, also, no surprise, in their own case. she uses wired headphones because she just doesn’t like airpods, and with all the travelling element does, it’s wiser to use normal headphones.
miscellaneous:
a bottle of multi-vitamins for her hair and skin. has an alarm that reminds her to take them.
birth control pills. same alarm. thinks that men should be responsible for protection.
a hot water bottle.
snacks: 2 small bags of almonds, konjac jelly, 3 packets of green tea, and mints. it’s hard work being hot.
a foldable windbreaker. she gets cold easily.
tampies and pads, as well as disposable underwear.
hand sanitiser, and disinfectant wipes.

Test Drives: Morphe, Rimmel, and IBY Beauty
Happy New Year you guys! I know that we’re technically two weeks past the official start of the new year, but it’s my first beauty article of the year. I have a lot of stuff that’s come in over the last two months so I’ll be busy creating Test Drives for quite a while. Anywho, I’m kicking off the 2020 Test Drives with a range of products from Morphe, Rimmel, and IBY Beauty. As usual, I’ll let you know what was gifted by the brand versus something I purchased.
Morphe Fluidity Foundation in F4.80 (purchased)
Even though I have way more foundation than I could ever use, I ended up picking up this and the other Morphe item I’m reviewing in today’s article when I was at the Newport Mall a few days ago. I opted to have my color matched by one of the associates in the store and she did a great job. The F4.80 hue is labeled as “Rich with golden undertones” which is perfect for me because I have warm golden undertones.
What I like:
Even though this is a full coverage foundation, it’s not heavy or cakey. It blends in with my skin so well, and is very lightweight. Plus, it matches my paler winter skin tone perfectly. It’s fragrance free as well.
What could be better:
Nothing, I liked this product and had no issues with it!
Morphe Fluidity Concealer in C4.35 (purchased)
I’m normally not terribly impressed by concealers because I have serious under eye bags. Like I’m not even kidding. I’ve had visible under eye bags since I was in high school. And unless I want to have cosmetic treatments done to banish them, they’re just a fact of my life. The Morphe Fluidity Concealer is designed to create full coverage and last for 24 hours.
What I like:
I’m AMAZED because this really hid my under eye bags. And I’ve tried A LOT of different brands from Tarte’s Shape Tape to even IT Cosmetics’ Bye Bye Undereye, and neither of these cult fave’s have covered my under eyes like Morphe’s did. And I didn’t have to cover half my face in concealer to achieve this result.
What could be better: Nothing! This really works!
Rimmel London Stay Glossy in Date Night (gifted via Amazon Vine)
So this was an item that was given to me through the Amazon Vine influencer program. This is a straightforward gloss from Rimmel London that promises to moisturize and last for at least six hours of wear.
What I like:
Date night is an amazing color that for my skin tone can be a great neutral. While it’s pinkish, it’s not obnoxiously bubble gum pink.
What could be better:
There’s a strong mineral or petroleum oil smell coming from this lip gloss. Honestly, the best way to describe it would be to say that it smelled like Luster’s Pink Oil Moisturizer back in the 90s (because I haven’t used it in decades and for all I know they fixed the stench).
IBY Beauty Carry On Face Palette (gifted)
A travel-friendly collection of highlight, blush, and eyeshadows that helps to declutter your travel makeup tote and gives you everything you need to create day to night looks. One side of the palette features three highlights and one blush while the other side of the palette comes with 9 shadows — two of which are matte and the remaining seven are shimmer hues.
What I like:
In terms of travel friendly, you can’t go wrong with an “all-in-one” style palette. The slim palette can slip into your purse, carryon or checked bag if you’re daring enough to check your makeup. Plus, the large pans means that you’re getting a significant amount of product. Pigments are rich and you don’t need a lot of product to get the color to pay off, even on darker skin tones.
https://www.ibybeauty.com/collections/face/products/carry-on-eyeshadow-blush-and-highlight-palette
Specifically for the eyeshadow side, it’s very shimmer heavy. There are only two of the nine pans that are matte. So, people who aren’t as experienced with creating beauty looks might be intimidated by the shimmer-focused slant.
The Verdict
There was something to love in everything that I tried today, but hands down the breakout “game changer” was the Morphe Fluidity concealer. As someone used to not getting total coverage in their concealer, having my under eye bags completely hidden with Morphe’s concealer was a new experience for me. As usual, full makeup details are below. And check out more of my Test Drive posts here.
Full Makeup Look

Happy Birthday @shesgotalionsheart!
In honor of your birthday Logan decided to share this story about bringing home baby (ghostwriters: @susanmichelin a/k/a CMackenzie and @cheshirecatstrut). We hope you enjoy both your story and your day! Have a very happy birthday!
It Won’t Be Like This For Long
One day soon we'll look back laughin’ At the week we brought her home This phase is gonna fly by So baby just hold on ‘Cause it won’t be like this for long... Darius Rucker
Hospital. Car seat. Hospital.
Logan’s gaze moves from the sliding glass doors of Neptune Memorial to the backseat of the Audi where Veronica’s adjusting the five-point safety harness around the baby. “Do you think she’ll sleep for the entire ride home?” she asks, backing from the car and straightening. “Maybe I should sit-- what’s wrong?” A slight frown puckers her brow.
“I keep waiting for someone to stop us,” he admits, rubbing the back of his neck. “To realize they’ve made a mistake and there’s no way Logan Echolls and Veronica Mars should be allowed to leave with a baby.”
“Well, she IS ours.”
“Yeah, but…” He looks over Veronica’s shoulder at the sleeping baby. She’s so tiny and helpless and… completely terrifying. “Aren’t there child welfare laws to protect them from the clueless?”
Veronica’s frown morphs into a smirk. “Is the fearless fighter pilot afraid of a wee little baby?” His gulped yes makes her grin. “It’ll be fine.” She carefully shuts the car door, leans against it to make sure it’s closed tight, and peers through the window, confirming an undisturbed baby. “She’s only going to sleep, eat, and poop, just like last night.”
Her calm is not reassuring. “If you say so.”
“I’ve read the parenting books and we’ve got the internet and, if we get desperate, we can call my dad.” She curls her fingers under the handle of the passenger door, pulls it open, and asks, “What could go wrong?”
Everything - is his answer, but since she obviously means the question to be rhetorical, he keeps it to himself.
They make the twenty-five minute drive from hospital to house in quiet. Veronica doesn’t even mock him for driving too slow, or for his constant checks of the rearview mirror. He knows she’s in pain, and—if the heavy eyelids and yawning are any indication—she’s also exhausted.
He pulls the car into the driveway and turns off the engine. “Do you want me to--” His question’s cut-off by the deafening wail from the backseat. “I guess she’s hungry.”
Fully-alert now, Veronica snaps off her seatbelt, and scrambles from the car. “But she just ate before we left the hospital.”
Logan shrugs. “Diaper?”
Veronica shoots him a look as she tries to disengage all the belts and buckles strapped across the baby. It all looks more complicated than the inside of a cockpit, but she manages to free the now-screaming Wyatt from her car seat. “Get her stuff and meet me inside.”
“Yes, ma--” At her glare, he chokes down the rest of the word ma’am.
Standing silent, he watches until they disappear into the house, and then unloads Wyatt’s ‘stuff’ i.e. all the hospital freebies Veronica jammed into an oversized tote bag. He wraps the nursing pillow around his neck yoke-like, balances two jumbo boxes of impossibly small diapers in his free hand, and closes the trunk with his elbow. Heading inside, he follows the crying to their bedroom.
Veronica has wasted no time; she’s stripped off the baby’s pajamas and is busy putting on a new diaper. “I’m going to try feeding her again. Give me that boppy-thing.” She waves at the u-shaped pillow around his neck. “And find me one of her t-shirts.”
He upends the tote bag on the bed, weeding through the assortment of nursing pads, pacifiers, wipes, blankets, and clothes to find a clean, pink onesie. Logan hands the shirt to Veronica. “Maybe she’s not getting enough food?”
“Well, it’s not like I have ounce measurements on my boobs.” She finishes fastening the multitude of snaps on the onesie and tugs the mitten cuffs over Wyatt’s hands. Logan frowns. Tie the arms in back and it could be a baby straight-jacket.
“Do you want to try giving her a bottle?”
Veronica doesn’t even bother with a response. Picking up the baby, she cuddles her close, rocking and patting Wyatt’s back until the screaming mutes to crying, and then subsides into tiny whimpers, and finally silence. “Can you take her while I change?”
They make the transfer without any fussing. “Hey there, jellybean.” Logan continues the patting and rocking, mimicking Veronica’s rhythm. “You know you’re not supposed to give your mother a hard time until your like sixteen and arguing over boys and makeup, right?”
Wide, unblinking blue eyes stare at him.
Logan lifts her foot and kisses her tiny toes. “I’m sure you’ll give her a run for her money, but be warned, her size is deceptive.” He glances at Veronica, smirks. “She’s like a tenacious little pitbull.”
Veronica rolls her eyes. Leaving her pajama top unbuttoned, she climbs into bed, and props pillows against the headboard. She repositions, adjusts and plumps the pillows in search of comfort. When she’s finally satisfied, she holds out her arms for Wyatt.
After giving her the baby, Logan clears the bed, and covers Veronica’s legs with the blankets. He kisses her forehead. “Need anything?”
Yawning, she shakes her head.
Liar. Logan can run through an entire list of things she needs and won’t ask for. At the top is probably her pain pills and a nap. He clicks on the bedside lamp and turns off the bright overhead.
“Are you trying to make me fall asleep?”
That’s the plan. “No, I’m trying to make WYATT fall asleep.”
“Well, it’s working,” she says with another yawn.
Skeptical, Logan looks at the baby. Her eyes are closed, but there’s no slowing to the sucking and swallowing, and her little fist kneads Veronica’s breast like she’s ravenous. “Eats like her mother.”
The lack of sarcastic comeback tells Logan what he needs to know. He watches them for a few more seconds and then returns to the car for Veronica’s suitcase. After securing the bottle of Vicodin, he stops in the kitchen to make her a sandwich. Midway through spreading peanut butter on bread, the crying resumes. Louder and angrier than before.
Foregoing the jelly, he slaps another slice of bread on top, grabs a glass of milk and the pills, and rushes down the hall. Veronica’s leaning over the co-sleeper trying to give Wyatt a pacifier. He sets the food on the nightstand. “What happened?”
“I don’t know!” Agitated, Veronica tosses the unwanted binky on the bed. “She fell asleep so I put her down and she started to scream.”
He eyes the bawling infant. “Do you think there’s something wrong?”
“How should I know? All her cries SOUND THE SAME.” Frowning, she bites the corner of her mouth, and chews her bottom lip. She surveys their dresser and the items from the hospital as if searching for an answer. Marching over, she snatches up a blue-and-pink striped receiving blanket and spreads it on the bed. “Can you get me my laptop?”
Dutifully, Logan bounds from the room and double-times it to her office for the computer. When he returns, Veronica is unsuccessfully trying to make snug folds around the wriggling, crying baby. “Here, you take this, and I’ll finish,” he offers.
Veronica relinquishes the swaddling to boot up her laptop, but she doesn’t cede control. “You fold up the bottom next, and don’t try to straighten her legs.”
Even if he was supposed to, straightening Wyatt’s kicking legs would be impossible. He holds her arm down to her side and pulls the bottom up, folding it over her shoulder.
“It needs to be tight.” No longer content to issue stage directions, Veronica abandons the computer to help him finish rolling and tucking and folding Wyatt into a cotton cocoon.
Logan scoops her off the bed, and cradles her head in his palm, starts to gently bounce. “Is this what they mean by snug as a bug in a rug?” He makes soft shushing noises until her warbling cries fade.
Veronica sits on the bed, pulls the discarded pacifier out from beneath her leg, and tosses it on the nightstand next to her sandwich. “Thanks for my snack.” Scooching back on the mattress, she reclaims her comfortable spot, and takes a bite of the peanut butter sans jelly. She lifts a corner of the bread, wrinkles her nose. “It’s crunchy.”
“That’s all we have. Do you want an omelet instead?” Her head tilts like she’s considering, and Logan tries to sell it. “With cheese and bacon?” Anticipating what is bound to be a yes, he returns Wyatt to the co-sleeper. The crying is instant. Loud and insistent like an ignored car alarm.
Dropping her sandwich on the plate, Veronica leans forward to peer over the edge of the bassinet. “Swaddling is supposed to work. Think we did it wrong?”
Logan doesn’t see how - it’s not that complicated. “Maybe she doesn’t like it?”
Veronica huffs in frustration, grabs the computer and Googles--how to swaddle your newborn--clicks the video link. The man totes the ‘happiest baby on the block’ method of swaddling and generously refers to the bawling infant as “a little fussy.” Veronica watches the two minute video twice.
“See? You’re supposed to LIKE being swaddled.” Veronica angles the laptop screen so Wyatt can witness the happy, quiet baby in the video. It doesn’t have any effect. Actually, Logan’s pretty sure Wyatt’s cries get LOUDER. Her scrunched face turning red with the effort. Veronica looks ready to cry along with her.
“You should take your pain pills and get some sleep.” Logan leans over the side of the co-sleeper, untucks the burrito-folded blanket, and picks up the baby. Turning her on her side, he holds her to his chest. “Wyatt and I will bond.”
Relief spreads across Veronica’s face—forehead unwrinkling and the pinched lines around her mouth disappearing—and then she bites her bottom lip, anxious. “Are you sure?”
“It’s not my first time being yelled at by a tiny, angry blonde.” And from the way Veronica glares at him, it won’t be his last. “Get some rest,” he amends, kissing her temple. “I can hold down the fort. You’ve done more than your share of the work already.”
She smiles, corner of her mouth quivering in a way that proves even HER endurance has limits, and sinks back on her mountain of pillows with a sigh. He grabs the laptop, which is autoplaying the fourth in a series of apparently-unrealistic swaddling videos, and carts both it and his still ‘fussing’ daughter out of the room.
Halfway down the hall, the cries climb in volume, thin and shrill like the howl of some small exotic animal. He sets the laptop hurriedly on the foyer console so he has both hands free to pat and rock.
“Got her looks and my impulse control, did you?” he asks stroking a palm along her tiny back and marveling that an actual human being can be this small. “Good thing this household will be liquor cabinet and Aston Martin free.”
Wyatt grumbles but subsides, head tilting to rest on his shoulder. “Hey, what about we try out that sling thing, huh? It’s what all the best-dressed dads are wearing, they tell me, and you know how particular I am about clothes. Or rather, you DON’T know yet, because you’re twenty-eight hours old, but if you’re anything like your mother you’ll catch on quick.”
She grunts, opening her mouth over his pec--maybe she’d enjoy a third dinner. Carrying her into the nursery Veronica nested all over like shopping was going out of style, he says, “Sling first, then bottle. Believe me, I’m familiar with the Mars appetite, but I like to do one thing at a time so I can do it well. Blink if you agree.”
A small fist flails, catching him beneath the jaw, and he says, “Okay THAT you got from me. But thumb on the outside and put your weight behind it, or you’re really only hurting yourself, jellybean.”
“So this is your room.” He spins in a slow circle, supporting her head so she can see the soft green walls and classic Winnie-the-Pooh decals. “Every comfort money can buy And I’ll let you in on a secret we with our inherited wealth seldom admit… money can buy a LOT. Anyway, we hope you like it here, because incompetent though we may be, we plan to keep you for the whole eighteen years. Don’t worry about the crib, I promise to put it together well before it’s needed.”
Last-minute packages are spilled across the waiting crib mattress; he locates the sling, still boxed, and grabs the already-assembled bouncy chair for good measure. “Right, diaper bag is… in the kitchen, if my sleep-deprived memory is correct. Afraid you’ll have to settle for formula just this once. The milk factory is enjoying a well-earned nap, and that thousand-dollar breast pump has yet to earn out.”
Wyatt emits a squawk, and he grins. “Elitist already, huh? I like it. Only the finest formula for you m’dear, cross my heart. And the bottles, I promise, are top of the line.”
It’s relatively simple to haul his catch into the living room; the harness on the bouncy chair isn’t nearly as intimidating as the car seat. He straps her in snugly, since her head has a tendency to loll. She watches him with bright, curious eyes as he rips open the sling-box and withdraws what looks like a Lawrence of Arabia cape.
“Fabulous.” He twists yards of soft grey fabric between his hands, trying to picture how they might comfortably cradle an infant. “I can build a lean-to in ten minutes flat, and survive drown-proofing with flair, but this definitely wasn’t covered in survival training.”
Remembering the computer, and the YouTube videos it can access, he books back to the hall. The minute Logan clears the living room door, the screeching resumes...louder, now, as if she’s got a forty-year-old opera singer’s lungs hidden in that six-pound frame.
His mouth shapes the word fuck but he manages not to say it, since begin as you mean to go on. In one move, he swoops up the computer, pivots, and heads back to the world’s smallest drill sergeant before she can wake her exhausted mother.
Wyatt’s gaze locks on him when he reappears, and her screeches seem to GAIN intensity--short, sharp bursts of offended noise like she’s chewing him out, pissed-off-Mars-style. He can’t help but laugh, bends way, way down to kiss her forehead; this decreases the noise level from ‘beyond furious’ to ‘baleful’.
“Cleary this chair is substandard,” he says, bouncing it with one foot as he types, thanking god his Naval-aviation career taught him fine-motor dexterity and multitasking. “I’ll be letting you speak to the manager’s manager about it, since those screams of yours could make anyone do ANYTHING.”
There’s a video from the sling-maker’s website in the list, so he plays that; follows the directions of the world’s most monotone Earth Mother as she expertly drapes the thing around herself and deposits a Betsy Wetsy inside. Wyatt’s chair harness unbuckles, thankfully, with the press of one latch. But when he deposits her in the supposedly-cozy nest he’s fashioned, it closes around her like an Invasion of the Body Snatchers pod, and she disappears from view.
“Shit,” he says, breaking his own rules as he shoves fabric aside, and rescues his daughter from the evil-but-kitten-soft depths. He tucks her against his chest, struggling to remove the strap from around his neck without garroting himself. And just like that, again, she quiets.
Light dawns at last in his badly-undercaffeinated brain.
“It’s not about independence at all with you, is it?” he asks, tilting her far enough back to study her face. She blinks at him, mouth twisting, and emits a complacent squawk. “You could care less about swaddling versus freedom--you just want to be HELD.”
He traces a finger along her brow, marveling at how, despite her tininess, he can already see Veronica in her face. Her little hand flails, opening like a starfish. Smacks against his pinkie and closes on it, gripping him tight. And he’s had enough experience falling in forever-love to recognize the emotion washing over him.
“If that’s what you need,” he tells her, serious. “It’s what you’ll always get. I’m here for you, jellybean. In this house, you’ll be treated like the queen you are.”
Wyatt grunts, wiggling closer, and he says, “Yeah, that’s nice to know, huh? And it’s a nice house too, don’t you think? I mean I realize it’s your first, but you’ve already proved you’re discerning.”
“Ah-na-na-na,” she says, and he says, “I completely agree. And it’s just dawned on me that this is MY first real home, too, so I think we must just be...really, really lucky.”
He settles back into the comfortable sofa, making the infant equivalent of an easy chair out of his leg and arm. Wyatt cuddles in, eyes starting to drift closed, and he smiles.
“This parent thing isn’t too difficult - you just need to stay this little,” he tells her, reaching for the remote. Clicks the TV on and hits mute, activating the subtitles with his thumb.
By the time he’s got the search menu up, she’s almost asleep, drowsy gaze still fixed on his face.
Logan flips through the channels. “What should we watch? Easy Rider?” He glances at the baby; with a sigh, her eyes shut at last. “Too soon? Okay, what about The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly?”
The title ‘Parenthood’ stops his channel-surfing. He hits the info button: Steve Martin’s character is driven to be the best father he can be because of his dissatisfaction with his own childhood.
Logan smirks. “Looks like we found the perfect movie,” he tells her, and settles in to watch.

Sephora Holiday Sale Guide
Having spent the past month or so sending out Holiday gift sets to editors and influencers I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the new stuff in Sephora right now, so I thought I would make a little guide of some gift sets to check out during the sale this month!
The 20% off sale runs from Nov 2nd-5th, for Rouge members (which if you are, I mean I’m kinda impressed but also you maybe need help), and later in the month runs for 15% off for everyone else with a Beauty Insider card (which is free!).
So without further ado, here is a list of the top six items I’ve been gazing longingly at at work. Let me know what you guys have had your eye on recently!
Milk Makeup Meet The Fam Milk Bestsellers Set ($39 $33)
Out of the seven items in this set, I’ve seriously thought about buying at least 5 of them in the past (the Kush Mascara, Cooling Water Under-Eye De-Puffer Stick, Blur Stick Matte Primer, Highlighter in Lit, and the Holographic Highlighter Stick in Supernova). Not only are you getting 7 products (even if they are mini) for 33 dollars, you’re getting a holographic glitter Illuminati bag out of it, which to me is almost worth the 33 bucks on its own
Pat McGrath Labs LUST: Mini MatteTrance Trio ($25 $21)
I mean, do I have to explain this one? Pat McGrath is perfect, all of her products look perfect, and I feel like anyone who wears her lipsticks will suddenly become perfect just by association.
Glow Recipe Limited Edition Watermelon Jelly Tote Set ($40 $34)
Once again, this is partly on the list because of the bag. But when Glow Recipe first launched at Sephora their products were out of stock for months so you know its gotta be good. And seriously, you’re getting a K-Beauty sheet mask, moisturizer, sleeping mask, and a cute purse for 34 dollars, just in time for winter to come (and if you’re like me, make your skin so dry it starts to peel off your face in protest) which is a pretty good deal to me.
Drunk Elephant The Big Reveal Kit ($80 $75)
For $5 less than the normal price of Babyfacial you get the full size PLUS a full size Lippe Balm AND samples of the face wash, serum, and face oil. I’ve been wanting to try the Babyfacial for ages and I’m sure some of you guys have been too. Its still crazy expensive, but saving $50 (the retail price of everything in the set is apparently $132) would make me feel a little better about that, plus Drunk Elephant is so classy you know? I feel like people who use their products have their life together.
Holiday Perfume Sampler ($65 $55)
This deal is bonkers. Not only do you get $122 worth of perfume for $55, but then on top of that you can exchange the certificate that comes with the set for a FULL SIZE of any of the perfumes. There’s some great classic options in here like YSL Black Opium and Marc Jacobs Daisy, but my favorite of all of the ones that I’ve smelled before is the Atelier Clementine California.
Dyson Blown-A-OUAI Noir Set ($399 $340)
I’ve saved the most ridiculous for last, but hear me out. Like, I would never waste my money on this but it is objectively a good deal! You save 60 dollars on the blow dryer plus you get four Big samples of Ouai products. All I’m saying is that if you win the lottery or have an eccentric rich relative this is a good one to put on you Christmas or Hanukkah list.

July 27th and 28th, 2018
The 27th was my first full day with my homestay family, after having met and gone home with them the evening prior. My family is smaller than I’d imagined: it’s just my host mother, Yichu (艺楚, yìchǔ), and my host sister Qinghan (清菡, qīnghàn), whom I refer to and address as Meimei (妹妹, mèimei, “little sister”). Qinghan, who was still asleep when I rose for class that morning, shares her surname (刘, liú) with me and her age (10) with my biological sister in America. Yichu had prepared breakfast: a vegetable bun, grapes, eggs, a bowl of milk, and my beloved youtiao. Once we had eaten our fill, we began the walk to my classroom, which takes about twenty to thirty minutes. Apparently, there was a quicker route that connected our neighborhood directly to campus in about five minutes, but that road undergoing some sort of construction meant we were using our detour for the foreseeable future. Some students had already arrived by the time I got to the classroom, so after bidding Yichu farewell I joined my peers in idle chatter about our host families. It was mostly positive; one girl was struggling to explain to her host mother that curly hair couldn’t be blow-dried and she would have to sleep with it wet, which conflicts with the Chinese belief that sleeping with wet hair leads to headaches later in life. Another’s host parents were over-enthusiastic about having a native speaker available to tutor their daughter in English, and she felt as though she wasn’t using her Mandarin enough as a result. My biggest issue had been the lack of readily-available cold water; I was able to address it by dashing to the student store a few minutes before class and purchasing the largest bottle they had in stock.
The three hours of class passed quickly, but they came with a caveat. Today was Yang Laoshi’s last day as our teacher, as she would soon be heading to lead a conference in Shanghai and then, after that, taking a two-year teaching assignment in Thailand. My goodbye present to her was an In n’ Out t-shirt, which I presented with both hands as per local custom. My gift reserves were running low—after Yichu received a UCLA shirt and hat, Qinghan got a UCLA sweater and tank top (both of which were far too large for her), and my partner on our trip to the local community center a few days prior got UCLA and In n’ Out hats, I was resigned to two In n’ Out t-shirts (one of which I had just given to Yang Laoshi) and a UCLA Hawaiian-print shirt, which was intended for my nonexistent host father. I am considering bequeathing the latter upon the teacher who wrote my recommendation for NSLI-Y in the first place.
Lunch passed, along with our lecture period (during which it was announced that I was student of the week!) and our interest groups which, for me, had shifted from folk dance to martial arts. Perhaps by her own design, the Intermediate 2 students finished the homework Yang Laoshi had assigned with about twenty minutes to spare. She then suggested that, as it was our last day together, we all go out to the front of the building and take a group picture. We readily agreed. Several attempts at jumping later, we had gotten a satisfactory shot of us in midair. I returned to the classroom to gather my things, hugged Yang Laoshi, wished her the best, and went out to meet my host mother.
I’m fairly certain Yichu actually works in the same building that my classroom is in, as she was just exiting an office when I greeted her. Together, the two of us exited the campus and made our way to a nearby restaurant. Yichu explained that Qinghan was currently finishing up her weekly flute lesson; we would begin eating dinner and she would make her way over independently. The food was excellent. I had some sort of beef-based broth and noodles. Following dinner, the three of us made our way to Cat Street (猫行, māo xíng) which is directly adjacent to the neighborhood our house is in and exactly what it sounds like: a street with cat-themed stores, cat murals, and live street cats. Qinghan and I visited a cat museum, which was essentially a dozen cats in a cage with a gift shop and café attached. It was there that I found a stuffed cat bearing my name (桃花, táohuā), which I promptly purchased. I’ve yet to find a definitive answer, but through various interactions with native speakers I’ve come to believe that “taohua”, in addition to literally meaning peach blossom, is used to refer to one’s luck in matters of romance and love. Between my taohua cat and my visit to Guandi Temple, I ought to be married by the end of August.
Afterwards, we ate dessert at a roadside stand selling “Four Fruit Soup” (四果汤, sì guǒ tāng), a mishmash of fruits and jelly-looking foods topped with shaved ice. I can’t say I cared much for it, but I’m glad I tried.
The rest of the evening was fairly low-key; I shared some of my art with my host family and let Qinghan use my tablet. Yichu informed me that I should get lots of rest; the 28th was to be the first of our two homestay family activity days, one of the rare instances in the program at Xiamen where we wouldn’t attend Chinese class, and one of the even rarer instances where I could get up later than seven-thirty.
I did, indeed, end up sleeping later than seven-thirty: I woke up around nine, and was greeted again by a Yichu-prepared breakfast. In addition to another helping of youtiao, she gave me an overview of the day’s schedule; I would first accompany her and Qinghan to the hospital so they could receive a type of traditional Chinese medicine that Yichu struggled to explain. She said it was made from ginger, and that they put it on during the hottest day of summer so it could make them healthier in the winter. After that, we would meet a friend of hers and his children, play golf, and finally head to Gulangyu (鼓浪屿, gǔlàngyǔ), Xiamen’s “Piano Island” and tourist hotspot.
Chinese hospitals are a fair bit quicker than American ones. After waiting for just under five minutes, we were shown into a room where Yichu briefly exchanged words with a doctor, who then invited Qinghan to bend over a hospital bed and expose a portion of her back and pressed six or seven patches onto it. Yichu received similar patches on her stomach. The whole affair concluded in about twenty minutes. On our walk to the mall (which was designated as the meeting place for us and Yichu’s friend), Qinghan inquired as to whether we utilized such patches in the States. I told her no, and she unleashed a long string of Chinese, which Yichu interpreted for me as her being jealous that Americans didn’t use them. I asked if they hurt, and Yichu said no, but they were very warm. In a climate like Xiamen’s, I could see how added heat could inspire jealousy in the heart of any 10-year-old.
The mall had at least four floors. I was exuberant. Yichu settled herself on a bench near a Starbuck’s and told Qinghan and I we could wander about until her friend arrived. Once I understood that she meant separately (my mom telling me that I didn’t have to take my little sister with me was a novel idea indeed), I visited every clothing or makeup store on the first floor, in the end buying only a wine-colored and berry-tasting lip paint and a canvas tote bag that read (in English) “Made in China”, which I found incredibly hilarious for reasons I struggle to articulate. The two were exactly the same price.
When I returned from my shopping trip, Yichu was sitting where I had left her (Qinghan in tow) and the rest of our party had yet to arrive. We waited about ten minutes more, and Yichu finally received word that they were stuck in traffic and we could go ahead and get seated for lunch without them. On our way to the 3rd floor restaurant, however, Qinghan began having some sort of issue. My Chinese wasn’t at a level where I could make out the specifics, but it seemed as though she had tired and was now electing to just drop and sit down in the middle of the mall. She and Yichu had a very heated conversation, which culminated in the latter simply walking away without Qinghan and beckoning me to follow. Writing off the ethics of leaving a child unattended in a busy shopping mall as a cultural difference, I obliged. Yichu and I put our names in and, with minimal wait, were seated at a table. She did some preliminary ordering and then left me in charge of the table while she went to retrieve Qinghan. All was well for a bit, but when a waitress approached me and began asking questions (assumedly) regarding the order in rapid-fire Mandarin with non-standard pronunciation, I began to panic. Luckily, Yichu and Qinghan arrived and the former was able to give instructions regarding…whatever was being discussed, without any input from me necessary.
Yichu’s friend (whom she knew from high school) and his children (who weren’t actually his children, but rather his nephew and two nieces) arrived shortly thereafter. The man appeared to have an excellent sense of humor, but his thick accent (I believe it to be the Xiamen local accent; among other things, h sounds are completely ignored, turning Zhongwen (the Chinese language) into Zongwen and shide (“yes” or “indeed”) into side) gave me a lot of trouble. One of the nieces (a university student) spoke a fair bit of English, and acted as a translator at times. For the most part, I focused on my kebab.
After the meal, we headed to Furong Lake (芙蓉湖, fúróng hú), a part of the XMU campus that I had previously visited but had no qualms with seeing again. We took a route through the area that was unfamiliar to me, and it eventually led us to a golf course, where I tried my hand at the richest, whitest sport I can think of, second only to polo. I excelled, but likely only because, instead of trying to hit the ball into a hole, the goal was to hit the ball as far as you could. And I could hit real, real hard.
Seven trays of golf balls later, we backtracked away from the course and navigated the rest of Furong Lake, eventually reaching XMU’s main gate, where we rode the public bus to the ferry terminal for Gulangyu.
Upon arriving, we learned that it would be about an hour and a half’s wait before we could board the ferry. I alternated between reading (I’m currently on number three of the four poetry books I brought on the trip with me, and the last chapter of my nonfiction work), letting Qinghan play games on my phone, eating spring rolls Yichu had prepared, and visiting the public toilet. I’m fortunate to say that squatty potties no longer faze me.
The actual time spent crossing the strait is about five minutes, but the time spent going through security and shuffling on and off the vessel doubles that number. It was dusk when we set foot on the island; after an extensive photoshoot for me by the main sign we made our way to a shopping street. I entered a generalized candy store; I was offered a free sample of a drink that tasted exactly like American cherry-flavored liquid medicine, and was ready to leave the store when I tried “milk pinecone”. I’m not sure what it is, but it’s definitely not actually pinecone. I believe it was some sort of white chocolate. In any case, it was delicious, and I bought a box, which I then ate for lunch the day after. I also purchased (from different stores) a necklace, as well as a bracelet to replace an identical one I had bought at Kaiyuan Temple and then proceeded to break a few days after. I visited the Chinese version of America’s Lush, which sold bath bombs and facial soaps aplenty, and saw a genuine, live pig just sitting in a cage on the street and, in a different area, a very large rat.
For whatever reason, people I interacted with made more frequent references to my being hunxue’er (mixed race, as you may remember from a previous post) than I had previously encountered. The highlight was an older woman who stopped me on the street, presumably ready to offer me a free sample of the food at her restaurant or a flyer advertising a sale at her clothing store, looked at me, threw her plans out the window, and asked if I was hunxue’er. When I said I was, she pumped her fist, said, “很棒!” (Hěn bàng; “so awesome!”) and walked away.
A little past nine in the evening, my enthusiasm was beginning to wane a bit as I thought of the full day of school awaiting me on the 29th. Our party’s meander home, however, was interrupted when we passed a seafood restaurant and everyone (author excluded) decided they were ready for round two of dinner. It was more of a snack than a meal, but it was enough—by the time we boarded the ferry back to Xiamen, it was ten o’clock. On the mainland (figuratively speaking, of course: Xiamen is actually an island. Gulangyu is just a smaller island. Like Pluto, if it had a moon.) we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. Yichu took Qinghan and me to the curb, where she was among a herd of people attempting to hail taxis. No luck. We jaywalked across the street to a bus stop, and Yichu examined the timetables. Everything would take us further away. Already heightened by the time delay of the impromptu meal, my stress levels were through the roof. We went through an underground tunnel and reached another bus stop. At this one, we waited for a bus and rode it for four stops or so. We got off, walked about two blocks, and were greeted with the familiar sight of neon-lit ears, tails, and whiskers.
I’ve never been so glad to see a street full of cat paraphernalia in my life.
