"Bluebird in Green Field" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A bluebird was perched in a beautiful green field in South Valley Park outside of Littleton Colorado. There were many birds enjoying the spring day and singing. The stark contrast of the bluebirds and the green really caught my eye. Seriously, now I can’t stop with the doors. This is part of the barn at Alderfer/ 3 Sisters park in Evergreen. The land was being ranched as far back as 1873 when James T. Hester built the first house and barn, which burned down. Parts of this building, and the adjacent ranch house, were built in 1894 by James Dollison. In 1945, E.J. Alderfer and his wife Arleta moved in to ranch Aberdeen Angus cattle and raise silver fox. The Alderfer family and the Spencer Wyant family eventually donated much of the land that makes up the park today. I finally got a better bug book, and still all I was able to nail down is that this is a fly, not a funny-looking bee. There are just so many species, a field guide can only scratch the surface. At any rate, this unusual-looking fly is hanging out on Dieteria bigelovii, or Bigelow’s Tansyaster. On Tuesday I had to stop twice on my way into work. The winds at the higher altitudes must have been absolute chaos. The whole sky was decorated with cirrus clouds being tugged in different directions, spreading willy nilly, wisps dissipating in some of the most unusual turbulent patterns I remember seeing. This is the season when a lot of what is blooming are what one of my books refer to as DYCs, Damned Yellow Composites. Presumably they are damned because there’s so many different kinds that look awfully similar. It is tricky to nail down a spp. I think I ID’d this one last year as Bahia dissecta or Ragleaf Bahia. And looking through the better books I have this year, I think I have to agree with myself. These are all over the place, and keep reminding me that, though the days are getting dramatically shorter, and winter is definitely coming, we still have some wonderfully nice days left to enjoy. Wasn’t sure I was going to be able to find this guy in the mushroom book, but there he was, towards the back. Fomitopsis pinicola or Red Belt Polyphore. It is perennial and visible in all seasons. You can see the growth rings on the top. Grows mostly on dead coniferous trees, like this stump. Pinicola means pine dweller.
