All the books I've gotten so far! I might get more once the Mothman Festival actually starts tomorrow, but these are all the ones I've gotten before then.
I saw the "Local Author" tag on these first two books, and spooky books are my forte, so I ABSOLUTELY had to grab Stix and The Hills Know by Breanna Leslie! Hopefully I'll have the energy to read them while I'm at this cabin in the woods,to really sell the vibe!
My mom wanted to know what on earth we were in West Virginia to find, so I got her Monsters of West Virginia by Rosemary Ellen Guiley at the Flatwoods Monster Museum so she could learn for herself.
While in Sutton, I also grabbed Sasquatch by Jeff Meldrum at the West Virginia Bigfoot Museum so I could learn more, since my Bigfoot knowledge is woefully lacking.
Today at the Mothman Museum, I alao grabbed:
Bridging the Tragedy by Bill (phD) and Jacqueline Kousoulas, since I have quite a few Mothman books but not this one (I even accidentally have two copies of The Mothman Prophecies by John Keel, with two separate names for them, lol!)
Cryptids, Creatures and Critters by Rachel Quinney, since I needed the art in person.
And finally, the Crème de la crème, Mothman Baby! by Elias Barks and Zoe Persico, as it was simply too cute to pass up!
(To quote Chris Fleming - "I know it's for babies, but I NEED it!")
Can't wait to dig in to these books, and hopefully I'll find more treasures tomorrow and Sunday at the festival

These are interesting points. You estimated their intelligence somewhere between chimpanzees and gorillas though and I think there's enough sightings out there to suggest that they're much smarter than that. I tend to think of them as a fellow group of people. I feel like it's tempting to underestimate them because of how we tend to "measure" intelligence and because of our own biases.
It takes a lot of time to watch, but there's a youtube channel called Snow White Bigfoot wherein the channel owner documents her interactions with what she claims are a group of sasquatch living near her. I know that sounds pretty unbelievable, but I don't get the vibe that she's a hoaxer. Obviously, as in all things bigfoot related, anything is possible, but the hopeful enthusiast in me believes her. I think it's a good way to learn more indirectly about how intelligent they are if you have the time and are interested. She approaches them quite respectfully and spends a lot of time trying to gather data without making them feel uncomfortable. I think that makes her a good and kind researcher.
In any case, her interactions are not that uncommon among some of the more serious researchers. Some of them engage in habituation, during which time they interact (usually indirectly in this case) with a local group of wildlife, or in this case sasquatches. In my opinion, there is some interesting and I think compelling evidence coming from habituation sites, but they're often buried under the mountain of hoaxes, money-making schemes, and attention seeking videos and stories that exist out there.
If you want do some extra reading, I also recommend Bigfoot in Evolutionary Perspective by T.A. Wilson. I have enormous respect for him because of his approach to the subject and I think he's a good jumping off point if you want lots of data. He has some insights you might find really cool based on what you've said. I also just started reading Jeff Meldrum's Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, but I don't have an opinion on that yet. And if you're looking for plain old data, the BFRO is a great site for that, but you might have already looked into that! Their director is Matt Moneymaker (a very interesting name haha) and he's of Finding Bigfoot fame.
I have more recommendations if you're ever interested! Bigfoot is one of my huge passions and one day I hope I get to the point where I'm capable of collecting sightings and doing field research of my own! Thank you for an interesting post, it's definitely food for thought and it makes me happy to see someone so passionate about the subject as well! Happy digging!
I'm about to go on a rant about Sasquatch.
I'm not sorry.

So.
Sasquatch. Bigfoot. Big hairy thing in the woods. What is it, and why is it so fucking hard to find?
Honestly, the simplest and most effective answer to basically any question asked about it is: "It's an Ape. Duh."
Okay, what is it? It's an Ape. A Great Ape. What specific branch is unknown, but it DEFINITELY ISN'T A GIGANTOPITHECUS DESCENDANT!!! Giganto was an Orangutan relative and Sasquatch is clearly more related to Apes like Gorilla and Chimpanzee. Stop that. Just because it was big doesn't mean that that's the only animal Sasquatch could be related to.
On the point of bigness, first, Giganto is good precedent for Apes being able to get that big, so the argument that Sasquatch couldn't as big as it's reported to be is already dead.
Why would it get so big, though? Well, why did everything else that came across the Bering land bridge get so damn big? Bountiful resources, need to adapt, freedom for experimental forms to arise due to lack of competition. Everything in the Ice Age Species Exchange did 2 things: Got really fucking big and got really fucking weird, so an ape coming over would experience the same lack of competition and adaptive pressures.
So why would we have such a hard time finding them if they've been here the whole time? Well, for starters, we do find them. Often. You just stick your fingers in your ears, close your eyes, and chant "Hoaxes and Bears! Hoaxes and Bears!". So... That's a you problem. Also, let's put ourselves in the mindset of a Sasquatch for a minute here:
You're a Sasquatch.
You're probably somewhere between Gorilla and Chimpanzee levels of intelligence.
You're hanging out, doing your thing, walking through the woods, and you enter a clearing.
The clearing is full of dead shit, fires and screaming, hairless murderous cryptids that can kill basically anything it wants.
You recognize that this thing is a threat.
You also recognize that they usually stay in or near the plains.
You also recognize that they usually don't come out at night.
You also recognize that if they can see it, they can kill it.
You make the easy connection that the best method for not being killed by these things is to go where they don't (Deep forests and inaccessible mountains) and do your thing when they're inactive (Night).
Now, practice this habit for an absolute bare minimum of the last 10,000 years (the last time the Bering land bridge was accessible, but they likely would have came over on one of the earlier openings, which was up to several million years ago) and you have an animal that is very well adapted to seeing Humans as an existential threat and keeping well the fuck away from them.
Alright, well, if they're real, why haven't we found fossils? ... My guy, do you have any idea how ludicrously difficult it is to find ANY Primate fossils? We have functionally 0 Chimpanzee fossils. We have a handful of teeth for Gorillas. Orangutans, also mostly just a couple dozen teeth. Gigantopithecus, the guy that everyone points to (erroneously) as an ancestor of Sasquatch, is only known from a partial jaw bone. Most of it's anatomy is just speculation.
For all practical purposes, there may as well not be any Primate fossils.
So now tell me why you would expect to find any Sasquatch fossils?
Well, why are primate fossils so hard to find? Forests. For a fossil to be preserved, the animal needs to either be buried swiftly after death in mostly light sediment, like sand and silt, or have their bones picked clean and, still, buried in some form of sediment quickly (like burial in a grave).
Forests rarely ever have such conditions. Most bodies are left in open air, humid, bioactive, scavenger filled conditions with very few chances to be buried (unless they end up falling in a river).
Oh, and North American forests are possibly the worst possible forests for fossil preservation, if for no other reason than fucking porcupines. Little bastards actively EAT BONES. So, yeah, finding fossils in NA forests is nigh impossible for an already nigh impossible animal to expect a fossil from.
Alright, but that doesn't explain why we can't find them. Well, for starters, we do, you guys just call all the witnesses liars, drunks or idiots. And expecting that kind of reaction tends to dampen one's enthusiasm to tell people what you've seen...
... So that's your fault, when you really think about it.
Also, who's gonna fund a multiple years expedition into the most remote reaches of the continent, with people the scientific (ha, ironic) community has made a habit of condemning as quacks and hoaxers, with military grade search and reconnaissance equipment, trying to build an entirely new field of study from scratch, to find an animal that is deliberately, consciously, trying to not be found.
Oh, so you just conveniently just can't find any evidence, but it totally exists? We have hair, which is call hoaxes. We have foot, hand and full body prints, which you call hoaxes. We have dermal ridges (the stuff that makes your fingerprint, but they exist on your hands and feet), which you call hoaxes. We have photos, which you call hoaxes. We have videos, which you call hoaxes. We have audio recordings, which you call hoaxes. We have basically everything short of a physical specimen.
Well then get a physical specimen!
A) Again, they are actively trying to stay away from humans. They likely don't visit the same places twice when they see humans around.
B) Sightings are rare, brief and probably deliberate on the Sasquatch's part as a way to scare you off. You're not going to be running around the forest on your normal hike with a tranquilizer gun to quick-draw at a moment's notice and that animal is definitely not going to let itself be seen for very long.
C) Hunters usually have a habit of NOT shooting the upright, human-shaped things in the woods. Even if it very obviously looks like a Sasquatch, most people would likely hold their fire in case it's an asshole in a suit.
D) Even if you manage to shoot one, do you have a chopper to haul it out? No? Well good luck dragging a 6-10 foot tall, 400-700 pound behemoth out of the woods with nothing but your bare hands.
And finally E) I'd like to at least hope that most people would be hesitant to kill something that looks so much like a human. If you saw a mother and young, could you really bring yourself to killing them?
Any debate is welcome, just be civil.

Sasquatch of the Sierra Nevada
Tumblr media
The Shoshone tell of a Jarbidge, or hairy devil; a large hairy, man-eating beast that was thought to prey on those who wandered away from the tribe. Large foot prints have shown up in Shoshone petroglyphs along side deer and other wildlife tracks on rocks along the Sierra Nevada range.
October 1985 in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, 19 year old marine, Butch Young was training at the Marine Mountain Warfare Training Center near Mono Lake, California. His squad was sent into the mountains one night for a training exercise. Butch remarks that that night was cold, there was snow on the ground, and they were patrolling at an elevation around 7,000 to 8,000 ft. The full moon illuminated 2 figures in the trees that, at first, was assumed to be the enemy squad. Upon further observation, Young noted that the figures were acting contrary to how a trained marine would act, giving no effort to conceal themselves, nor could he see evidence of a weapon or uniform. Young’s squad continued to watch the figures from a distance of 25-35 yards. Young states that from that distance he could clearly make out individual fingers of the hand of one of the figures in the moonlight. After a quiet stand off, the figures disappeared into the woods. The next morning, the squad reported to the center, only to find out that the aggressor squad was no where in the vicinity of Young’s squad. They were in fact 2 clicks away. Young said in an interview with the Ohio Bigfoot Hunters: “I saw something that haunted me for over 20 years. After doing some research and after talking to Bigfoot Researchers and some soul searching, I could only deduce and come to the conclusion that what I saw were 2 Sasquatches during a Mountain Warfare Training Operation with the USMC.”
Jaime Avalos is a man who has claimed to have tracked a family unit of the same 3 Sasquatch for over 2 years and across 400 miles. His story began in June of 2006 while driving about 30 miles southwest of Mono Lake in California. He claims that a creature that stood about 7 foot tall crossed the road in front of him. Avalos stated that his first thought was “What the heck is a guy in a gorilla suit doing up at this elevation?” The creature continued into the brush line out of sight and Avalos began to pull forward again when the creature doubled back across the road blocking his path once again. Avalos said then that he could see the details of muscle moving underneath the creature’s dark fur. Avalos felt that had the creature wanted to, it could have easily ripped him from his vehicle and Jaime would be helpless to do anything to prevent it from doing so. Since then, Avalos has found tracks consistently measuring 11, 10, and 8 inches on both the east and west side of the Sierras. In an episode of History Channel’s Monster Quest, Dr. Jeff Meldrum, Professor of Anatomy and Anthropology at Idaho State University and Bigfoot Authority, compared his own extensive collection of supposed Sasquatch track castings to those that Avalos had collected over the 2 1/2 years he had been tracking the group. Meldrum noted the much smaller size of Avalos’ prints, as the average Bigfoot track measures around 16 inches and is relatively flat, unlike Avalos’ prints that have a pronounced arch, similar to human foot prints. Despite the arch and smaller proportions, Avalos maintained that these could not be the prints of a human based on the terrain and circumstances they were found. Dr. Meldrum suggested that since there are almost no records of juvenile Sasquatch tracks, that it is very possible that when young, Sasquatch exhibit more human foot features that flatten and broaden as they mature.
October 2005 in Brown Cone, Sierra National Forest, Joe Walls was deer hunting around 8:30am. After hiking for a few hours he stopped to rest before heading back to his camp. At approximately 11:15, he stood up from his resting spot and picked up his rifle. At that time, a large fur-covered creature with red eyes walked out from behind a tree, they had a moment of prolonged eye contact before the creature swiftly disappeared further into the forest. As he watched the creature run off, he caught sight of movement to his left, he turned to see another two creatures, one large and one small, possibly an adult and a juvenile, quickly follow the first creature into the woods. Walls defends the claim that they were not humans dressed in costumes stating that it was hunting season and would be far too dangerous to be dressed like that in the woods at that time.
Mono Lake 1991, a man records his wife and children playing on the lakeside, as he pans across the horizon, something can be seen walking between rock formations on the beach. The figure wasn’t noticed until 17 years later when another family member watched the film. Stutchman Forensics Lab in Napa Valley, California took the film back to Mono Lake, and despite the shoreline rising 7 feet since 1991, managed to match the site of the film to the current horizon. After taking measurements and further analysis of the film, Video Forensics Analysts Steve Buller and Gregg Stutchmen determined the figure to be under the current waterline and measuring at a height of 6-8 feet.
Despite evidence inconsistent with other Bigfoot research across the country, Biologist John Mionczynski, although a skeptic, does state that the environment of the Sierra Nevadas would be able to sustain a large primate due to sufficient sources of protein with lake trout, deer, and pine nuts as well as proper cover and foliage. The smaller size could be explained as a regional difference and the corridors of movement discovered by Jaime Avalos could be evidence of a omnivorous primate following the ripening of pine cones.
Is there a small breeding family unit of Sasquatch in the Sierra Nevada Mountains? People have been seeing something in the mountains bordering California and Nevada for centuries, but definitive evidence to support their claims has yet to be found. Unfortunately eye witness testimony and physical evidence seem to contradict one another. The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization or BFRO continues to record sightings in the Sierras, the most recent being in July of 2020 at Mono Lake. After all of the craziness this year in 2020, there is no telling if 2021 could bring solid evidence of Sasquatch in the Sierras.

Somebody call professor Jeff Meldrum, he's Mormon AF.
"They escaped religious persecution, drove off the Native tribes, and defended their new land from other settlers who were not God's chosen people. Truly THIS place would be their new Promised Land. But there was someone else there, who wasn't about to let them have it, by God...!"
This is my pitch for a movie that is 90 minutes of Sasquatch brutally killing Mormons.
Please give me a million dollars.
We'll call it something generic like "Salt Lake". But print it in a really creepy font.
