The all-new Jeep Commander – a three-row version of the Jeep Compass rumoured to be named the Jeep Meridian for the Indian market – has been revealed inside and out, with Jeep publishing a few images of its new three-row SUV that will take on the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. The new SUV will go on sale in South America first, with the India launch expected in 2022, and a couple of near production-ready test mules of the Jeep Meridian were also recently spotted in India. Now, though, we have our clearest look yet at the Jeep Meridian SUV.
The Jeep Meridian’s face derives clear influence from Jeep's newest offerings such as the new-gen Grand Cherokee and the top-of-the-line Grand Wagoneer. It has the same square-jawed look with the flush seven-slot grille and angular LED headlights making for an imposing front end. The Meridian has a more upright shape compared to the Compass in order to accommodate the longer wheelbase and also has an extended rear overhang. Do note the tail section is completely new, and incorporates the slender LED tail-lights like seen on the Grand Wagoneer.
The Jeep Meridian carries forward the same interior layout as the facelifted Compass. However, the materials and themes used are different. The pictures show the leather inserts on the dash being replaced by a brown suede finish in the Meridian, while the brushed chrome finish seen on the Compass’ dash has been replaced by a copper finish. Also seen are brown leather seats featuring a quilted pattern, as well as open-pore wood trim on the dash and door panels.
While Jeep is yet to confirm the final specifications and features for the Meridian, some feature expected include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), a panoramic sunroof as well as multi-zone automatic climate control. The test mules spotted in India had a six-seater captain configuration with second-row captain chairs, which are expected to also be power-adjustable.
Other features carried over from the 2021 Jeep Compass include the UConnect 5 infotainment system along with the 10.25-inch digital instruments display, auto headlights and wipers, electronic parking brake, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, eight-way adjustable front seats, an Alpine audio system, a powered tailgate, 360-degree cameras and more.
The seven-seat Jeep Meridian is expected to get the same engine options as the Compass – a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is expected to be offered in a significantly higher state of tune in the Meridian. Manual and automatic gearbox options will be available with both engine options, and all-wheel-drive will be on offer as well.
The Jeep Meridian is expected to arrive in India early in 2022 and is expected to be priced at a Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh premium over equivalent Compass variants. The new SUV, codenamed the H6, will be the third of four models Jeep has planned for India.

If you are looking for the best SUV under 15 Lakhs, read on while we help you figure out what suits you best.
We present to you a comprehensive list of the best SUVs under Rs. 20 lakhs and Rs. 10 Lakhs.

The Seltos is Kia’s first model in India commissioned with the uphill task of establishing the Korean auto giant in the Indian market. It unsurprisingly did not disappoint. The car had all the right ingredients for the job. Attractively designed, keenly priced and available with a wide range of engine and gearbox options. All versions of the Seltos are BS6 compliant with the manufacturer keeping a check on the latest norms.
Mahindra Thar
The Mahindra Thar is the true off-roader. The all-terrain monster can negotiate the beaten track like no other. The car is surprisingly capable as an everyday vehicle with creature comforts like AC, climate control, and telescopic steering. The all new Thar is an embodiment of the original Jeep with its boxy looks and well shaped front and rear bumpers. The Thar is available with diesel and petrol engine options and there are three roof options as well.
MG Hector
The Hector is Chinese-owned British carmaker Morris Garages’ initiation to the Indian market. At first glance, it sure has some interesting ingredients to offer. An eye catching design, massive proportions and new-age tech make it a well-rounded package that should definitely be on the radar of prospective mid-size SUV owners. The car’s engine choices include a petrol-manual, a petrol-automatic and a diesel-manual. There is also the option of mild-hybrid technology on the petrol-manual powertrain. A major talking point is the industry first 5 year/unlimited km warranty that the car offers.
Hyundai Creta
The Hyundai Creta has been without doubt one of the most successful vehicles that has come from the Hyundai stables. The car got an all new 2020 facelift with a host of cosmetic and mechanical upgrades. One of the prominent features of the new Creta is a bold front grille with an updated set of tail lamps. The interior remains disguised, but it is likely to have the same layout as the current model. When it comes to the engine options, the new car gets a 115PS 1.5-litre diesel and 140PS 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine with a 6-speed manual, automatic and a 7-speed DCT gearbox options.
Mahindra Scorpio
The Scorpio SUV is undoubtedly Mahindra’s biggest hit. Its tough build makes it well-suited to rough usage and to many, the upright shape gives it the right image too. The whole range was given a facelift in early 2021, which remained mechanically unchanged but brought significant improvements to the interior. The new model Compass has taken things to proper luxury car levels in terms of quality, appointments and equipment.
Tata Safari
The lord of the SUVs, the Tata Safari is back in an all new avatar. Tata has brought the Safari name back, a seven-seat cousin of the Harrier. Unlike previous Safaris, which used ladder-frame chassis and traditional, rear-biased 4x4, the new one borrows the Harrier’s (actually Land Rover) D8 platform and is front-wheel-drive only. It's powered by a 170hp FCA-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine, which can be had with either a six-speed manual or six-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.
Tata Harrier
The Harrier is a premium SUV from the Indian automobile manufacturer Tata. The car was first introduced in 2019 and has seen one upgrade including a facelift in 2020. The new Harrier gets more power, new features and a long-overdue automatic transmission. One of the defining features of the Harrier is the Land Rover platform that the SUV has been built on. This makes the Harrier a force to reckon with. This platform is powered by the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel. The engine also happens to power the Jeep Compass, which is a 170hp power-house of a motor.
Final Thoughts
Rugged looks, big tyres and a go-getter attitude make the modern SUVs in India a sophisticated piece of engineering. Skoda Rapid 1.0-litre BS6 petrol
The Skoda Rapid will see a serious powertrain vary revision within the months to return. By April 1, 2020 there can be no Rapid diesel on sale, with the discontinuation of the 1.5-litre TDI turbo-diesel engine. Of the petrols, the dated 1.6 MPI engine will make approach for a brand new 1.0-litre, turbo-petrol unit. The new motor’s 115hp energy and 200Nm torque will mark a major leap over the outgoing naturally-aspirated unit’s 105hp and 153Nm of torque figures. The Rapid with the up to date engine will go on sale by April 2020. Expect delicate styling adjustments on the mannequin too. However, should you plan to carry out for the Rapid’s alternative, you’ll have to wait till late-2021 when the brand new mannequin goes on sale.
Skoda Karoq
Skoda has toyed with the concept of bringing the Karoq SUV to India for lengthy. The excellent news is that the mannequin is now confirmed for launch in April 2020. The not-so-good information? It can be imported into India as a totally constructed unit (CBU) and can be topic to the complete bevy of duties and taxes, which might imply premium pricing for the Jeep Compass rival. The Karoq for India will include a 150hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, and it’s anticipated to be paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. There can be no diesel engined variations of the SUV.
Skoda Octavia RS 245
Enthusiasts rejoice! The Skoda Octavia RS is set to make a comeback to India. We will get the Octavia RS 245 that’s powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with 245hp and 370Nm of torque on name. It can be introduced in totally loaded and with none modifications for India. The promise is of an uncorrupted RS expertise, although the Euro-spec car’s comparatively low floor clearance could possibly be one thing of a fear in India. Pricing could possibly be a kicker, nonetheless. The RS 245 will are available in as a full import and costs are more likely to be within the area of Rs 40 lakh. However, the pricing doesn’t appear to have saved patrons at bay, with the RS 245’s 200-unit allocation for India inviting big curiosity lengthy earlier than bookings open.
Skoda Superb facelift
Skoda will launch the updated Superb in India in May 2020. The sedan will get a light facelift and refined adjustments to the inside. What’s larger information is the discontinuation of the two.0-litre TDI diesel engine. The sole engine on supply on the Superb can be Skoda’s new 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that can come rather than the prevailing 1.8-litre unit. Power will see a 10hp leap to 190hp too.
Skoda Kodiaq petrol
The Skoda Kodiaq SUV can even see some developments in 2020. The current 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine can be withdrawn by April 1, 2020, and can be changed by a 2.0-litre petrol engine. India will doubtless get the engine in its 190hp state of tune, mated to a dual-clutch auto. All-wheel drive can be commonplace and you may count on Skoda to take care of the identical excessive ranges of kit as the present model.
In addition to the above fashions, Skoda is working to launch the all-new Octavia in India within 2020 as properly. Come 2021, the primary of the Skoda fashions – a mid-sized SUV – below the VW Group’s India 2.0 Project will go on sale. The mannequin can be shown in concept form as the Vision IN at Auto Expo 2020.
