Jeannie Seely Recognized for Unwavering Commitment, Outstanding Leadership with the Prestigious Joe Talbot Award by CMA
56-year Grand Ole Opry member and well-loved air personality on Sirius XM’s Willies Roadhouse, Jeannie Seely, renowned for her unwavering commitment, outstanding leadership and the preservation and advancement contributions to Country music's values and tradition has been awarded the prestigious Joe Talbot Award. The special award was presented by Country Music Association Board of Directors President Kella Farris, who surprised Seely on the Grand Ole Opry stage following her set on Saturday evening. The Joe Talbot Award was created in 2001 and bestowed posthumously to its namesake, Joe Talbot, a lifetime member of the CMA Board of Directors, who passed away in 2000. The award was first presented in 2001 with Jeannie Seely being the 12th person honored since its inception. Prior recipients include Ken Burns, Dayton Duncan, Charlie Monk, Janette Carter, Kitty Moon Emery, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson, George Jones, Louise Scruggs, Marty Stuart and Joe Talbot. “How wonderful to be honored for doing what you love to do and love to share with others! My surprise was obvious since I am rarely at a loss for words, but this caught me totally speechless!” exclaimed Jeannie Seely. “While Country music will always, and must always evolve, we must always remember the Grand Ole Opry is the cornerstone our industry was built on with music that represented the people. I sincerely appreciate CMA and the folks who recognized how much I care, and I’m proud to be in such great company! Read the full article

It continues to succeed because of the efforts of Scott Sexton and the great board along with so many great friends and artists who have performed and given their time to support such a worthy cause. To say we are thankful is an understatement for all who have worked so hard.” – T.G. Sheppard and Kelly Lang “Our deepest appreciation goes to Scott Sexton, T.G. and Kelly Lang, and the entire Country For A Cause team for putting this amazing event together,” said Meredith “Mamie” Shepherd, program manager for Seacrest Studio at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. “Community events like Country For A Cause help advance our mission of compassionate patient care, groundbreaking research, and clinical training. We are so grateful to Country For A Cause for their steadfast support of this vital work.” “In its 9th year, Country For A Cause broke a fundraising record earlier this month as the country music community came together before a sold-out house at 3rd & Lindsley on behalf of fundraising efforts for Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. It takes hundreds of hours and multiple volunteers to make this event happen every year, but all involved with this organization understand the stress and helpless feelings families face when dealing with the illness of a child. If the money we raise helps with children’s medical research or assists with the treatment of a child in need, then every ounce of energy that we pour into this annual concert is worth it. Next year will be our tenth anniversary of our CMA week Country For A Cause concert, and we are setting the fundraising bar even higher!” – Sherri Forrest, President of Country For A Cause About Country For A Cause: Country For A Cause is an annual concert held just before the CMA Music Festival in Nashville. Artists who have performed throughout the years include Crystal Gayle, The Bellamy Brothers, Mark Wills, Ty Herndon, Doug Supernaw, Baillie and the Boys, Collin Raye, Billy Dean, Jeannie Seely, Jan Howard, John Rich, Ashton Shepherd, Leona Williams, Jody Miller, Lulu Roman, and countless others. In 2018, Country For A Cause teamed with Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt as the sole beneficiary of proceeds raised. Jack Greene
youtube
In 1967 the CMA held their first awards ceremony. The star of the night was Jack Greene, who took home honors for Male Vocalist of the Year, Best Single and Best Album. The song that brought all these accolades was "There Goes My Everything." The song was written by Dallas Frazier, who took home the Song of the Year award. Greene had been a member of  Ernest Tubb's band The Texas Troubadors for several years, often taking lead vocals when the group recorded on their own. Soon Tubb was telling Greene to go solo, which led to his fist huge seller "There Goes My Everything." Jack, however, was no one hit wonder. He scored 5 number one hits before 1970, was nominated for 4 Grammy Awards, and would also have hits with duet partner Jeannie Seely. His records were mostly smooth Nashville Sound  affairs, but he was no bland balladeer. His voice was deep and powerful, giving the records an emotional depth that made them compelling. This is most apparent on his 1969 hit "Statue of a Fool", a tour de force vocal and one of the best country records ever made.
youtube
Although Jack would perform and record for many years to come, his biggest hits were over by the mid seventies. Today he is barely mentioned, his classic Decca Records unavailable on major streaming services. The recorded evidence upholds his abilities, even if it's currently hard to come by. Beloved by fans and fellow performers alike, his death in 2013 left a hole in the community he had served so well. Although overlooked by historians, Jack Greene left a legacy that will surely be rediscovered someday. At least we can hope that is the case.

“I get the same feeling walking into the Opry House as I do when I see one of my heroes.”
Tumblr media
Blake Shelton
This morning was our morning to depart Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge and make our way west to Nashville. We were all loaded and on the road by 9:30 with a plan to take a secondary biway for a portion of the trip to see some local sights before connecting with the 40. We stopped for gas in a little town and I asked Syl to grab me a muffin in what might be one of the funnier names establishments that we have seen “Buck’n Donuts”. As no muffins were available he instead brought out the yummiest eclairs which we shared with gusto.
Travel along the highways was uneventful. A group of convicts wearing orange and white striped clothing and cleaning the roadside was about the most exciting thing. We stopped at a rest stop outside Nashville for a stretch and a bathroom break. Syl initially parked in a state trooper spot but we quickly remedied that.
Once in Nashville, we headed straight to our hotel which was all ready for us despite our arrival a bit before regular check in time. The hotel the Home 2 Stay by Hilton and is lovely and clean and quite conveniently located. It has a tiny kitchenette and enough space for us to make our stay in Nashville pleasant.
After we got unpacked, it was time to head to lunch and we found that at Republic Burger in The Gulch. Not knowing very much about Nashville yet, it appears that The Gulch is a trendy place - given away by the large Lululemon, a specialty candle store and a boutique that specialized in bathrobes (if the window display was any indication). Lunch was really super. The burgers were delicious.
I drove on the way back to the hotel and through a combination of Syl directing using a hand drawn tourist map, multiple road closures due to construction and finally the GPS we saw most of Nashville including Broadway St where we rolled down the windows to listen to the music. We traveled on streets named after Rosa Parks, Dr Martin Luther King and John Lewis and 2nd Avenue right through to 11. We were literally EVERYWHERE.
Our tickets to the Grand Ol’ Opry were for the 7 o’clock show and so we went home to spiff up and have a little rest before heading out again.
The Grand Ol’ Opry was an easy drive and the ticket app was slick at getting us to our parking spot right at the bridge to the entrance and into the show itself. The grounds are beautiful.
The countdown to the show built our excitement and when the curtain finally rose and the music began to play it was the quickest two hours of my life. Wow! Blanco Brown, Randall King, LOCASH, Julia Cole, Kassi Ashton (loved her), Brantley Gilbert, Sister Sadie, Jeannie Seely were the acts. Julien’s favourite was LOCASH who brought their little girls out to be with them on the stage and encouraged everyone to get up and dance. There was a surprise visitor - Charles Esten who co-wrote a song with Julia Cole which they performed. He also performed with LOCASH. He is also an actor from the show Nashville and Outerbanks.
After the show we went to the Opry Shop where I indulged in post Opry splurge spending (everyone needs a GOO golf ball right?!). Back to the hotel after a quick stop at the local 7 Eleven (some scary looking dudes were also there), and a late night toast and cereal snack before bed closed our incredible day.

“’80s Lady” K.T. Oslin Dies at 78
K.T. Oslin, whose “80’s Ladies” made her the first female songwriter to win the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year award, died Dec. 21, CMT announced.
Oslin was 78. She had Parkinson’s disease and was recently diagnosed with COVID-19, per Rolling Stone.
“This breaks my heart,” LeAnn Rimes tweeted.
Other Oslin hits included “Do Ya” and “I’ll Always Come Back.” She wrote hit songs for Anne Murray, Dusty Springfield and others before turning to acting in the 1990s.
“Our sympathy and condolences to the family, friends and many fans of singer, songwriter and actress K.T. Oslin who we lost today,” Jeannie Seely wrote on Facebook.
Gretchen Peters recalled Oslin signing on to her Planned Parenthood benefit concert “when no one else would do it.
“She was funny and smart and irreverent as hell,” Peters tweeted.
“K.T. brought an edge and an attitude that was missing in country music in the ’80s and ’90s, especially among female singers,” Terry Lickona, “Austin City Limits” executive producer, said in a statement. “ ... She helped pave the way for the new generation of women in country to come.”
Brandy Clark used the words “larger than life, smart, funny, elegant (and) beautiful” to describe her friend and mentor, while Suzy Bogguss remembered the singer as “such an original and true musical spirit.
“We’re gonna miss your clever wit and surprises, K.T.,” Bogguss wrote on Facebook.
