Magic Diamond Heist Vertigo

The zoom in on Ginty as he contemplates what to do with his not-sister is as unnerving as Scotty’s face when Judy has completed her transformation. These are shocking, dark, strange moments. This is art looking at us wondering what we are really about. What do we want? What are we made of?

The similarities are important - men remaking a new love object in the image of a dead one; and a death they are implicated in - but maybe the difference becomes even more crucial because of it. Scotty just falls for (what is essentially) a random woman. But then she dies and Scotty is left alone and lonely. Ginty, however, wants to fuck his kid sister. She dies, and now a new woman, identical to her, appears. Hence that look. She is what he wants, and finally free of the inscest taboo. But, maybe that is the problem? Now he can have what he wants, and then, what is it anymore? Is that not the most profound sadness possible we see in his eyes? He can finally have what he wants and now he doesn’t, because of it.

The second difference is that Scotty “recognizes” Judy (again a random encounter) alone, but Ginty doesn’t see the resemblance at all until their mutual stepfather points it out, and “unites” them through a work engagement (a continuation of the work that got her killed). He has to be shown the similarity by an authority; the man who saved them while their parents lay slain by their feet in a moment of trauma. While the sea raged in slowmotion. Their mother slain by (the) water, their father by fire. The first two elements in classic western ceremonial magic: Father/Man/King/Fire, Mother/Woman/Queen/Water. Vertigo is a ghost-sex story. White Fire is a story of magical initiation.

After that zoom the movie becomes (even more) incoherent. What had been a loose story of diamond theft (and incest) becomes completely fractured. The very point of turning Olga into Ingrid so she could help infiltrate (again) the bad guys operation, which is strange in itself since they killed her for it already, is lost completely. What is the point of reintroducing a known mole into an organization? Still, after weeks of teaching Olga to act like Ingrid, and having plastic surgery, they do not use these aspects even once for anything. Never. At all. Instead they just suddenly “storm” (very slowly) the bad guys' operation in broad daylight (in a scene after Ginty literally says they will try to fool X again) with a large group of men they somehow now work with. And ruin everything. Getting no reward. No diamonds, maybe killing all the bad guys, I think? And what does Fred Williamson want? He’s a cop, supposedly. Doesn’t seem to be (or really does). Why is he searching for Olga? Why does he accept (the bribe of) a few diamonds instead? Who even was Olga?

Nothing makes any sense after that zoom. Hence: A magical reading of the movie.

The Prince and the Princess have to unite in an alchemical wedding of a fairytale of Initiation, to become King and Queen. And the (utterly nonsensical) explosion of the White Fire diamond seals the union. And Princess and Prince are united in the end.

The 1984 French exploitation film is written and directed by Jean-Marie Pallardy (Emmanuelle Goes to Cannes). Robert Ginty, Fred Williamson, Gordon Mitchell, and Jess Hahn star.

J’ai découvert le Nanar lors de la projection de The Room au Grand Rex en février. Et lors de la toute dernière projo de la saison Panic X Chroma, on nous avait présenté La Nuit Nanarland. Alors j’y suis allé faire un tour !

Quoi ?  Chaque année, depuis 13 ans (à la Cinémathèque et depuis 3 ans au Grand Rex) une nuit entière est dédiée aux films et à la culture nanar. Des films qui sont tellement mauvais, que ça en devient drôle !

Alors ? J’étais bien content d’avoir pu goûter à cette ambiance lors de The Room et j’étais bien content de la retrouver. J’ai officiellement battu mon temps resté dans le Grand Rex. Après les 7 heures lors du Marathon-Anniversaire Indiana Jones, je suis resté plus de 12 heures devant des films épiques ! En effet, je n’avais jamais fait de nuit au cinéma.

La soirée a commencé à 18h30, avec le concert du Sosie de Robert De Niro dans Heat. Accompagné d’un musicien en playback, le chanteur qui ressemble à l’acteur, chante des textes inspirés des films et surtout, avec en fond des clips vidéo pertinemment mal fabriqués. C’est à ce moment que l’on se pose la question de la chance dans le showbiz. Des petits jeunes qui n’arrivent pas à percer et des sosies parodiques qui foulent la scène du Rex, c’est paradoxal ! Il n’en reste pas moins divertissant en tout cas.

Après, 4 films ont été projeté. Tout d’abord, une aventure thriller-fantastique très attendue par les amateurs : White Fire (aussi appelé Le Diamant ou encore Vivre pour Survivre mais surtout qu’on a fini par appeler Whaïïïïte Faïïïïeur) Il a été pendant très longtemps introuvable, mais les équipes ont fini par mettre la main sur une superbe copie 2K ! 

Le réalisateur Jean-Marie Pallardy était dans la salle et a pu dire quelques mots (et quelques blagues) à la fin. 78 ans et toujours en forme !

S’en est suivi Force Noire aka Die Brut Des Bösen, un thriller de karaté. C’était assez comique d’y retrouver l’acteur qui a joué dans Charlie et la Chocolaterie de Burton... 

Parce qu’il fallait un film d’horreur-SF, Zombie 3 a bien fait son travail. Même si ça roupillait un peu plus et qu’en soi le film n’a pas autant de moments hilarants que les autres.

 Enfin on a terminé la soirée avec le fantastique-action Ninja III, qui a eu le mérite de réveiller les troupes !

Chaque film était précédé de présentations, de bandes-annonce, de Cuts Nanarland (une sorte de zapping par thème) et de quizz (qui a permis à des spectateurs de gagner des lots) 

On a eu le droit également aux deux premiers épisodes de la saison 2 de Nanarscope ainsi que la cultissime série de bandes-annonce coquines, juste avant de pouvoir sortir en récupérant une viennoiserie et une boisson chaude offertes, vers 7 heures du matin…

Les présentations étaient aussi drôles que pédagogiques. L’ambiance était au top, même s’il y avait une perte de puissance sur la fin. Les extraits dans les Cuts étaient très comiques, notamment par le simple fait de découvrir les titres des films. Avec par exemple des noms improbables suivis d’un numéro 2 ou 3 ! J’ai d’ailleurs été amusé d’y voir un extrait de xXx : Reactivated, que j’avais vu pour en plus en Imax 3D !

J’ai eu la chance de pouvoir être en mezzanine, qui reste le meilleur spot (à condition de ne pas être trop au fond) surtout pour les marathons, car les sièges en cuir ultra confortables permettent de tenir le coup. De plus, les organisateurs n’ont pas été trop sévères concernant la nourriture. Les gens ont dans l’ensemble respecté les seules consignes (pas de plats chaud et/ou en sauce et ne pas abuser en quantité) et pas mal de poubelles étaient à disposition.

La boutique était assez fournie, bien que je n’ai rien pris. J’aurai aimé avoir le t-shirt collector « Philippe » (en hommage à Hitman Le Cobra) ou encore au moins une affiche Narnarland Trois. Ça manquait de produits dérivés, comme l’a fait le marathon Retour Vers le Futur par exemple. Sinon, de nombreux dvd et livres étaient à la vente, aussi bien sur Nanarland, que sur les mauvais films ou même le cinéma érotique. Certains pouvaient même être dédicacés !

Du coup ? Je pense que je suis devenu fan du nanar. J’ai compris cette culture que je ne connaissais pas vraiment. Je peux donc en profiter lorsque les occasions se présenteront. Bravo à toutes les équipes, les intervenants, les organisateurs. Je reviens l’année prochaine !
