Paul Turounet is a photographer who lives and works in the San Diego area. Paul's work focuses on the border region between the United States and Mexico, which is a topic that is always relevant here in San Diego, but which has taken on even greater import over the past few months. Using forms from traditional darkroom prints to artist books to site-specific installations, Paul's photography encompasses a wide range of experiences, and I was happy to get the chance to talk with him for today's show. We talked about three of his series, "Tierra Brava," "Bajo La Luna Verde," and "Estamos Buscando A," all of which deal with various psychological aspects of the border region. For the second segment, we talked about the idea of artistic commitment.
(Conversation recorded February 24, 2017.)

Thank you @trashcanoftrashcans and @pandakitty-10 for tagging me in this.
Nickname: Too many to count. I usually go by M.H online. Irl, some people call me 'Kinley, Mickey Mouse, Davetta or lil' Gail (parents). If it's not these, then someone pronounced my name wrong.
Zodiac: Cancer
Height: 5'6 and a half
Last movie I saw: The hunchback of Notre dam. It is such a great animated film. I watched it last night for the first time and there were breathtaking scenes that made me so happy!
Last thing I googled: what color means hope?
Favorite musicians: I like a lot of music. I can't pick just one. Recently, I have just been an emo listening to bands like TøP, P!ATD, MCR, Queen, Rolling Stones and set it off. Great dudes! Sometimes I just listen to what's on the radio and just jam from there.
Song stuck in my head: Bohemian Rhaspody by Queen
Other blogs: I don't have another blog on tumblr or any other social media in general. (I'm sad I know), but I do have a YouTube channel called M.H Productions. You can also find me on discord as well. I'm mostly active in the JDC discord server.
Do I get asks: No. I have them turned off for now.

Amount of sleep: What even is sleep? Never heard of her!I try to at least get 4-6 hours in on a school night, but when I'm off, there is no such thing as sleep.
Lucky number: 11
What I'm wearing: I'm currently wearing pj's typing this, but if you see me irl, you'll probably find me in a sweater and my black combat boots.
Dream job: Not really sure. I'm testing out animation to see if I like it. It's basically a combo of music and art but it's more behind the scenes type of theatre. I just hope I get to do something of those lines.
Dream trip: Anywhere really! I'd love to see NYC, Paris, or maybe even l.a, but anywhere safe and beautiful I fine with me. I really want to ride a cruise though.
Favorite food: Spaghetti
Play any instruments: I can play the viola and a recorder
Favorite song: Again, as I've previously stated, I like a lot of music.
Random fact: I'm weird
Describe yourself as an aesthetic: Big girls cry sometimes, roses next to windowsill, moonlight, coffee on a table(idk lol)

Reception for the Artist @ jdc Fine Art, what a great experience!
I had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer, the Director of jdc Fine Art, and chatting  about her new gallery space.  When she told me she too had attended Modernism Week, I knew she was one of Pav-LOVE-ian's people.
The reception had everything I seek in these events; good art, good conversation, and that feeling of being in the warm embrace of the creative community.  Met some interesting people from the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) who inspired me to get more involved with photographic arts.
Of course the highlight of the night was speaking with scott about his work. As I have said in previous posts, the power of this art can only truly be felt in person.  Why? Well, there is the subject, the quality of light and dark, but...there is something I have failed to mention.  The paper has a visual texture (not a dimensional texture) and pigment saturation that is subtle yet rich to the eye.  Stand a few inches from one of scott's platinum & palladium prints and it is difficult not to think this is a painting.  Imagine if you saw watercolor paint (not in pastels but deep charcoal) on artist paper.  Scott told me that he has learned to push the process to give the work its signature feel.  It shows!
I would argue that these are not merely photographs, having seen them on display, I think they are truly deserving of the title "fine art."
