Note
Ive heard of jcs from my past stint in the musicals fandom but now uve got me wanting to listen to it 😳 got any recommendations for which ver to watch first?
ehehehe well well well I say the 1973 version is my go-to rec cause its a classic. I'm not sure where online you can watch it cause I actually found an old dvd of it in my yeye's house but I think the usual piracy sites have it. Carl Anderson is an AMAZING vocalist
I've heard good things about the 2012 broadway revival and from what I've seen it does look really good but I haven't been able to do much digging for that one yet so
the 2012 arena tour version (w/ tim minchin and ben forster) is the first version I ever watched and while it's scuffed in more than a few ways it holds a place in my heart. Love the rather obvious portrayals of modern politics and also Minchin's portrayal of Judas (but also be warned there's a lot of autotune. As in it is disgusting with the amount of autotune on this one. here btw no need to download the file if you don have space)
whenever I'm just listening to it I switch between the 1977 album and the 1996 london cast recording but I do listen to the london cast recording more often but just cause I've rewatched the 1977 version a Lot
I don't remember the other versions that well (except what I've heard about the sweden version. It sounds like it fucks hard I need to find a copy for it) but here's my stuff
(but also be warned that they do depict the scene where Judas hangs himself. Just putting that out there in case)

Note
What versions of jcs have you seen?
1973 movie, 2000 movie, 2012 Arena Tour, and I think it was 2012 Broadway revival. And then I've listened the 1996 London cast recording and the original 1970 studio album.

Jesus Christ Superstar LIVE - REVIEW
If only it had been.
John’s performance was underwhelming and not right for this role. He had one facial expression throughout the whole musical and his singing was not what Jesus should be like. There was no drama; there was no screaming, none of those high notes, like in The Temple or Gethsemane, to name only two instances on which I missed the table-flipping, screaming-on-top-of-his-lungs Jesus, that I know from all cast recordings and shows I have witnessed. I’m not saying he should have done it and damaged his voice, but I’m saying that casting him was a mistake. The whole show felt kind of stale; usually I’m in tears when Gethsemane comes on but this time I was just kind of cringing. To include something positive here: I had, a few hours before it aired, listened to Gethsemane, because I found out it was already on Spotify, and it didn’t sound half bad! In fact I was in hysterics because that is my favourite song and the recording is genuinely good. Not great, but good and solid. I noticed he didn’t go for the high notes and it worked, in its own way. But when he actually acted the scene on-stage or rather failed to act it, his eyes dry, no pain in his features whatsoever, a bottle of wine from Last Supper still in his hand, I was disappointed. How could he not even put the bottle away? Gethsemane requires more than a few half-hearted waves with one’s left hand, but there barely was more. And on top of this, by not acting his part, the song, that had come across so authentically in the recording, lost its magic. Not even the last note was hit, as I had expected, on a higher pitch, conveying some emotions or his suffering. Gethsemane, as the emotional direction for the entire second act did its job: by it being an underwhelming performance, nearly nothing that followed, held any real importance. Jesus before Pilate: he sits and stares, delivers his line. Jesus before Herod: he sits and stares. Jesus before Pilate again: he sits and stares, then he is hauled up and whipped, sometimes there was a show built around him, people lashing at him, but at times he was not even touched, simply moved to the phantom lashes in the music. His death felt stale, not even the makeup fit. He was supposed to be beaten and he had 2 scratches on the head? His whole performance lacked the spirit it takes to play Jesus; I can only assume, John Legend did not feel the role, did not feel the spirit of the emotional strain on Jesus, the sadness, the suffering.
Due to this disappointing performance, the whole show was weakened a great deal. Don’t you get me wrong! Most of the cast was great! However this can’t be said about Sara Bareilles, although not as unconvincing as Jesus, I still did not see any of the confused-and-in-love-ex-prostitute-turned-apostle, that I expect from Mary since that is literally her story. Sara and John seemed to mainly concentrate on their singing, granted with varying degrees of success, but all in all both their performances aided greatly in hindering the musical’s true spirit to shine through.
However even I can’t say that certain aspects of the production were not absolutely great. One of those was Alice Cooper. Having already sung Herod’s Song on the 1996 London cast recording, meaning that he was familiar with his role and the position he held, he had ample time to prepare for his performance, which was well used and at least that part of the show was saved.
Also convincing and well thought through, were the high priests, especially Annas and Caiaphas, as well as the resident Roman representative: Pilate. While Pilate could not win me over completely, the role was played in accordance to how it should be done. It was noticeable that Ben Daniels felt and lived his role onstage.
The choir in the background did their job admirably, they kept the atmosphere alive as well as they could and succeeded a great deal in making the production visually interesting.
The apostles, generally, were adequate. One of my favourite things for them to do is slur the Last Supper. Not only do they sing “what’s that in the bread/it’s gone to my head” but all of the refrains contain the line “sinking in a gentle pool of wine”; Last Supper is essentially a song about passing out, too drunk to stay awake with Jesus. Peter’s performance of Peter’s Denial was shaky, but Erik Grönwall as Simon was a successful casting choice; he managed put the zealot in Simon Zealote excellently.
A special place in my heart, in any Jesus Christ Superstar production, holds Judas. I can only thank divine instances, that this role was given to Brandon Victor Dixon. Having starred in Hamilton, I expected him to be good, but to actually hear him sing and almost more importantly act the part, gave me immense joy. I have nothing to criticise, and that is not, because I love Judas, quite the opposite: Judas is an exceedingly difficult role to play, and doing it well requires a lot of skill and dedication. While the emotional journey of the Jesus character is pretty straight forward (read: he gets overwhelmed, he gets betrayed, he questions God, he gets whipped and then sacrifices himself), that of Judas is much more complicated (read: he cares for Jesus, wants to help him, sees himself unable to do so, because Jesus won’t let him, gets rejected and then betrays Jesus, kisses him, then hangs himself). Two of Brandon’s performances, I admired especially; the first one being Judas’ Death, played with amazing engagement, real feelings and emotional singing, the second one being Superstar. This last revival number that Judas sings while Jesus is on his way to the cross, sometimes seemed a tad crowded due to 35 dancers on the stage and the inherent fast tempo of the song, but Brandon managed to still get the song’s temperament exactly right. Additionally he made up for at least some of the high notes, that John missed out completely. All in all Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas, carried the weight of the production on his shoulders, and did so superbly.
However even though his solo numbers were on point, he could not save the production singlehandedly because of the immense importance of the relationship between Jesus and Judas. This came across as very one-sided, due to not only the uninterested attitude of John’s Jesus, but also the general distance that was put between them in this production.
As a final note, I am disappointed, not only in performances, but also the directing of the whole show. It lacked intimacy; not only did it seem shallow and the relationships empty, but also, in the year of the Lord 2018 it is apparently still impossible to show two men kissing on television. And I’m not talking about the peck on the cheek, that was very clearly portrayed, but I am talking about the Judas kiss, which has, in numerous other adaptions, already been included as a real, lip-locking kiss between two men.

voted for the uk arena over the 1973 film because even though its classic and has more performances I enjoy, the 2012 is more grounded & less outright bizarre and alienating to a newcomer + I find it the more emotionally impactful of the two
hey so i need your help

Ranking all the Jesuses from every version I've watched/listened to so far
without further ado let's get into it 🙌
Ian Gillan - 1970 Original concept album
Tumblr media
The True Doer that you cannot outdo. The og who made this role what it is today. And since the og album was were I got my start and obsession with jcs, I have a huge fondness for him. There's just something so- so... about him. His vocals? Insane, fantastic, the golden standard. His Gethsemane is Everything. He raised the bar so high (literally lol) and made this role harder for everyone that came after him and I respect that. I also love his characterisation. He is a rockstar and he knows it. Adore this whiny ass messiah and his dramatics. 9/10
Ted Neeley - 1973 movie
Tumblr media
Sad little mouse man. He's like some small rodent to me. His gethsemane is iconic, but beyond it I don't care to much about his Jesus. He's perfectly inoffensive, but I find him a bit boring. Poor guy also had the disadvantage of performing against Carl Anderson, who's too powerful and who commanded every scene he was in, outshining Jesus. Tedsus is not for me personally, but he's definitely not bad. 6/10
Camilo Sesto - Madrid 1975 album
Tumblr media
I like him! He reminds me of Ian's Jesus but sadder (love to see it). Really good vocals. That 'POR QUE' ate. And his Gethsemane in general too. I don't have that much to say besides that, but Señor Sesto is really good in this role. 8/10
James Whitson - San Jose Civic Light Opera's 1990 production
Tumblr media
Uhhhhhhh. Watched this in a discord watch party and for half of it we were thought this was Ted. It wasn't. Don't really know what to say, there wasn't anything really memorable or notable about him. Also has the disadvantage of being pared up with Carl Anderson, except it's even worse here. If Carl was anywhere near him, no chance I was paying attention to Jesus. Um... he chased Santa out of the Temple! That's something! 3/10
Steve Balsamo - 1996 London revival album
Tumblr media
Steve Balsamo Jesus, my dearly beloved. How can you not love him. Just rewatch his Gethsemane for the 1000th time. His vocals are out of this world, man has organ pipes in place of vocal chords. Props to him for actually crying in gethsemane and still killing it. Absolutely fantastic. And his beautiful hair and those brown eyes really add to it. He's such a sad pathetic man, it's great. No complaints 10/10
Glenn Carter - 2000 movie
Tumblr media
I'm shaking, please buy him brown contacts. I am a glensus hater, although I have to admit that during my second viewing I didn't dislike him as much. Easily my least favourite gethsemane (lmm excluded), except his delivery of "what you started, I didn't start it", that was surprisingly good. Again, I'm a hater but bonus points for the entertainment factor. 4/10
Paul Nolan - 2012 Broadway revival
Tumblr media
BORING! Sorry your trouple doesn't save you from being so incredibly bland. It's like looking at a white wall that has just been painted over and you're watching it dry. Gethsemane is solid vocally, I like his interactions with others. But Jesus himself? No thanks. The staging of the crucifixion was so great, but then there he is with his mouth agape like a baby bird being fed and unconvincing "suffering". Also, no blood? 3/10
Ben Forster - 2012 UK Arena tour
Tumblr media
THIS IS THE ONE. My roman empire. My most dear blorbo. He's been living in my head rent free for months. I love him so much. He's just so incredibly stressed out and angsty and pathetic and constantly on the verge of a complete mental breakdown. His gethsemane is my favourite. Just pretty much everything I could want from a performance of it. The way he curls up on the floor? The little moments when his voice breaks a bit from emotion?? The knee thing??? Great, fantastic, stunning, no notes. Also I adore his costuming, finally Jesus is given something more interesting. 11/10
John Legend - 2018 NBC
Tumblr media
Hot take, but he's not nearly as bad as people make him out to be. He's just fine. I do enjoy his voice, Poor Jerusalem is especially good. Although I don't love his acting in the second act, but I really liked him in the first one. This Jesus just seems really nice and friendly and I love that. Gethsemane is solid vocally, even without the G5. Anyways he's not bad at all! 6/10
Andrew Latobesi - 2018 Villanova College
Tumblr media
This was another wildcard from the watch party. Jesus didn't stand out much because we were all a bit distracted by Judi. And Mary. He was bland and the acting was not fantastic, but this is a high school prod, and for what it's worth he's not bad. Gethsemane was solid enough considering everything. The crucifixion surprisingly hit, good crying there. ??/10 since I don't think it would be fair to rank him against all those adult professional performers.
Jack Hopewell - 50th Anniversary North America tour
Tumblr media
The only Jesus that made me cry while watching. He suffers real good (and looks very pretty while doing so). He's just so- so... I just wanted to wrap him up in a soft blanket and give him a kiss on the forehead and feed him soup. Tbh I think he's one of the best vocally too. His high note is my fav. Gethsemane in general is just great too. Love how much he's just some silly guy who then has to face the Horrors. He's just very cute :] 10/10
Jeangu Macrooy - 2024 Netherlands national tour
Tumblr media
The most poor little meow meow Jesus ever. He's so pathetic it's great. Him smiling and being happy was also so cute. Really good vocals too, man killed those high notes. His gethsemane too... Jeangu Macrooy absolutely steels the show and it's fantastic and incredibly heartbreaking. Want to see his performance again so so badly. In the meantime everyone should check out a snippet of his performance 10/10

This is the second of three posts on "Gethsemane." I'm using this opportunity to highlight revisions that may be small in size but make a big impact, and to provide some insight into why they exist.
To be specific, this is the revised version for the 1996 London revival (and subsequent productions), which has been licensed in more or less that form ever since. I'll get to one even tinier change in the next post, one that some argue has seismic impact, which is also currently licensed, but I'm starting here because I want to consider each in isolation.
First, though, some context...
Intermission Placement: A Conundrum
To discuss this change, I need to rewind the clip to the end of Act I, and specifically to another Tim Rice quote, but this time I'll add the second half of the quote to the sentence:
Andrew and I always felt that the first act ended at this point [after "Damned For All Time / Blood Money," to refresh your memory], but in the majority of the stage productions around the world, the break seems to have worked better after the Last Supper and Gethsemane scenes.
If the person reading this is from America, or honestly, any country that isn't part of the UK (someone please correct me if I'm wrong, and they also did it where you are), you may say to yourself upon reading that quote, "But I've never seen the intermission come after 'Gethsemane'!" That's because, contrary to Tim's words, it usually doesn't...
...except for a few occasions when JCS has played London. Indeed, this change in the climax was first proposed by Jim Sharman, who directed the original London production. In his memoir, he states that he felt "placing the Gethsemane aria just before the interval and leaving the audience to ponder Christ's deeply human dilemma" would increase their engagement with the second act. As the show ultimately ran for eight years, at one point becoming the West End's longest-running musical, one can only assume the alteration didn't hurt its success.
This particular change spread rapidly. A glance at the playbill for the original Los Angeles production, which incidentally introduced Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson's performances to West Coast audiences and arguably cinched their casting for the 1973 film, shows that intermission's new placement worked so well (presumably in rehearsals for London, as the L.A. premiere pre-dates the London opening) that the creative team was emboldened enough to try it there also:
Tumblr media
(Before anyone asks, that Rob Schneider-lookin' guy is Bruce Scott, who played Pontius Pilate in this production and was also the original American Riff-Raff in the "Roxy cast" of Rocky Horror. He went on to replace Ted when he left to do the movie.)
It's been done a few more times over the years, and, as you might've guessed, "Gethsemane" again closed the first act when JCS returned to London for its 25th anniversary in 1996.
What Changed
That should help explain why I made this its own post. There have been minor lyrical changes that didn't stick around; for instance, on the recording heard here, Steve Balsamo sings "what would be my reward" as opposed to "will." But none of those have stayed. What has is the arrangement.
One can only assume that this act-closing placement was why the song's new orchestration was milked for maximum "West End leading man in the center spotlight" impact, and a tag where Jesus repeats "Now before I change my mind" immediately after its first appearance, with a dramatic high note at the end, was added. One can also assume that Judas' entrance was moved to the top of Act II, as audiences tend to associate that moment with the arrest anyway, the tag has a very final sound (for lack of a better way to put it), and it'd make no sense, theatrical or other, to drop the curtain when the kiss of betrayal has just occurred -- it'd feel like an interruption.
This new tag (and, indeed, all of the arrangement, including pointlessly -- in my opinion -- dropping all rock/rhythm instruments from the "Alright I'll die..." section) is still part of the licensed score today and was at one point enforced to an extent that Ted Neeley had to figure out something to do in that spot in his mid-2000s U.S. "farewell tour," as can be seen here. However, the 2012 Broadway revival originated by Canada's own Stratford Festival did not include the tag (as seen here), nor did any of Neeley's recent European appearances, which indicates there's now some leeway regarding its use, at least in professional productions.
The Tag: Use It or Lose It?
My two cents: if you're going to put an act break after "Gethsemane," which I don't recommend but it's your choice, by all means, use the tag. It seems to have been crafted for that, and it works to put a "button" on the scene for closure. But if the intermission is where it normally is for most of us, don't use the tag at the end. It's a pointless grab for applause if the song appears in its intended context.
Coming Up Next:
The most recent -- and, in some opinions, the most egregious -- change to "Gethsemane" (to date).

This is the second of the other two versions of "Heaven On Their Minds" that I wanted to look at. To be specific, this is the revised version for the 1996 London revival, which has been licensed in more or less that form ever since. The differences from the original are slim compared to the Murray Head single, but worth noting because some of them survive to the official version of the show to this day.
Lyrical Differences
For that particular production, Tim Rice took a second look at the show's lyrics to eliminate "several false rhymes, which annoy me now" -- as his autobiography put it -- and also seized the opportunity to change what he thought he could improve. This is not the first, nor the last, time that we will encounter his second thoughts in this song-by-song analysis.
There are three differences of note in that regard when it comes to "Heaven On Their Minds," two of which are still part of JCS today and all of which are best heard in the recording above (Zubin Varla is a better version of Jérôme Pradon, sorry not sorry).
For easier phrasing, and possibly a better rhyme with the word "best," he swapped out "Tables chairs and oaken chests" for a singular version (i.e., "Table chair and oaken chest").
Because he regretted repeating the "crowd" / "loud" rhyme in "Hosanna," he decided to remedy the situation by replacing the earlier instance and -- in the process -- showing he'd done his homework. "I am frightened by the crowd / For we are getting much too loud" became "And our conquerors object / To another noisy sect."
Lastly, a fresh attempt was made at a defined ending to the song rather than allowing the performer to ad-lib into infinity, an attempt which can be heard on several recordings (1996 London and thereafter) as follows: "Listen Jesus to the warning I give / Please remember that I want us to live / So listen Jesus to the warning I give / I just want us to live / It's all gone sour."
What Stuck Around?
The switch from plural to singular remains in the score to this day, as does a variation on the coda. (Be the aim to have it both ways or to offer latitude within the suggested structure, only the first two and the final lines of the lyrics in the third bullet above presently appear in the licensed score, with instructions to ad-lib for a few bars indicated in between. FWIW, I like the coda, but not enough to miss it when it's not there, so this was probably a wise choice on their part.)
Considering how embarrassed Sir Tim was by the lack of variety in his rhyming, it must therefore come as somewhat of a surprise that the "object" / "sect" lyric hasn't been heard since the 2000 Broadway revival (and the tours in the States and abroad, and direct-to-video pro-shot, which immediately followed), and is not in the licensed version today. I don't mind; personally, I slightly prefer the "crowd" lyric to the "sect."
Coming Up Next:
A handy dandy little straw poll for the fan(s) who are reading. I want to hear from you! (Also I needed an excuse to stick one more "Heaven On Their Minds"-related bonus track from the 50th-anniversary re-release on my blog. Don't judge me.)
