Japanese BL Starter Pack
It’s been awhile since I dropped a rec list, so I am here today to share one that is very near and dear to my heart—a Japanese bl primer for those who are new to the jbl game. I created this for @neuroticbookworm to help her on her journey when she decided she wanted to start getting into Japanese works. The fandom (on Tumblr and generally) tends to focus primarily on Thai shows because they are the easiest to access for international fans, since Thailand is working its way toward world domination via ql media and wants us all to be able to watch. But there is a lot of great stuff to watch beyond the easy access Thai channels, and Japan is the country where this genre originated, so its shows are important for anyone who considers themselves a bl fan. Japan doesn’t cater nearly as much to the international audience so tracking down the shows sometimes takes some ingenuity and can-do spirit, but that’s part of the fun!
And so, the list! Bookworm is about halfway through it and having a ball, so I figured it was time to stop hoarding it and share it with anyone else who would like to dip their toes into jbl and isn’t quite sure where to start. A few notes:
I am not here to teach you about the deep roots of the jbl genre or give you a primer on yaoi manga. I am by no means an expert and there are other places to find that information. Start here with this great post by @nieves-de-sugui and then maybe wander over to @absolutebl to read up more on the evolution of the genre.
This list is by no means an exhaustive accounting of every important Japanese bl ever made; it is simply a nice sampler platter of the cream of the crop among various styles you will find in jbl. Watching through this whole list will not only expose you to some fantastic shows, but also give you a sense of what makes jbl unique and how the country’s style differs from others, and point you toward the types of jbl you’ll like most (they tend to put shows in pretty specific style and tone lanes and once you find the ones you like there are lots more where that came from).
If you’re coming to this post as a jbl lover and you don’t see your favorite here, I promise it’s not because I don’t love it very much; I simply had to make some choices to get this down to a reasonable shortlist. Feel free to leave extra recs for others to find!
I’m putting these in a loose suggested watch order that will take you through the various jbl lanes in a kind of popcorn style, because I always think it’s good to change it up so you don’t get too stuck in one mode, and it works its way up to most of the extremely Japanese stuff (you will know what that means by the time you finish). But do what’s in your heart and change up the order if you want, friends, I am not the boss of you!
Cherry Magic (Crunchyroll or grey)
gif by @liyazaki
I believe everyone on Tumblr is pretty familiar with this one, which is not a coincidence—this is one of the most accessible jbls. Not in terms of actual access to watch it, mind you (we’ve all jumped through shady internet hoops to watch it) but in terms of its content and style. Cherry Magic is a classic workplace romcom with a magical twist, and it is charming af. It’s a great exemplar of Japan’s light and zippy comedy lane for bl—a lane in which, importantly, the romances stay chaste even when the actual plot is about sex, or lack thereof. My friend @waitmyturtles would kill me if I didn’t make sure you know that Cherry Magic also has a lovely follow up film. And bonus: there is now a Thai remake airing so if you watch the original you can get in on the discussion about the different adaptations between countries. This is pretty easy to find these days in all the usual places, but I strongly recommend watching it here.
Old Fashion Cupcake (Viki)
gif by @liyazaki
Moving on to a slightly more mature workplace romcom. Old Fashion Cupcake, another Tumblr favorite, is an age gap boss-subordinate romance, and it’s both very adult and somehow wholesome af at the same time. Sure, there is a lot of carnal desire going on here, but there is also a lot of wooing via fluffy pancakes. It’s a tight five episodes and a fantastic example of what Japan, with its extreme technical precision in writing, directing, editing, pacing, and acting firing on all cylinders, can do in two hours. Theres not an ounce of flab on this thing and you’ll want to watch it over and over again.
Utsukushii Kare (Viki)
gif by @wanderlust-in-my-soul
Time to get a little weird! Weird is a key feature of Japanese media, and lots of jbls explore unusual relationship dynamics rooted in complex psychology. This is the first show on the list that will likely feel very Japanese if you’re new around here—my advice is to lean into it and finish the show, even if you get uncomfortable along the way. In Japanese media, discomfort always serves a purpose. This is a high school story with a twisted relationship at its center, and I’m not saying any more than that. Don’t spoil yourself and go watch it! This one also comes with two sequels—one short second season and one movie—that continue from the original story. They are less essential but still excellent.
I Cannot Reach You (Netflix)
gif by @my-rose-tinted-glasses
Next up, another high school tale, but with a totally different vibe. This show is kind of a revelation in its willingness to tell a story about overwhelming desire—including sexual desire—with young protagonists. It’s rooted in a classic but often misunderstood trope, friends to lovers, and takes the angst of it seriously, giving us a low stakes story that feels extremely high stakes to our leads. It’s also gorgeous and uses a classic Japanese visual style (bokeh) that you’ll be dying to learn more about.
His (Viki)
gif by @gabrielokun
Time for a break from high school, and we’ll sprinkle in a movie for some added flavor. His is a jbl film featuring a second chance romance between a stoic, introverted man who moves to a remote town to start over, and his ex-boyfriend who follows him there unexpectedly, adorable child in tow. Importantly, this movie does not take place in what we often refer to as the “bl bubble” where homophobia doesn’t exist; the leads experiences of being gay men in a homophobic society are hugely important to the plot and themes of the story. It’s a beautiful film and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it. @bengiyo would surely also like me to tell you that this film follows a brief prequel show called His: I Didn’t Mean to Fall in Love about the characters originally meeting in high school; I do not think it’s really necessary to watch it but completists can start there.
The Pornographer series (Gaga)
By now you should be ready to get into some classic Japanese fucked up psychosexual material, right? Right! The Pornographer series is told in five installments in this order:
The Novelist, a six episode miniseries
Mood Indigo, a six episode prequel series
Spring Life, a 15 minute short
Pornographer: Playback, a two hour film
Spring Life Continued, a 15 minute short
Confused by that distribution model? So say we all; sometimes Japan likes to make us work for it to make sure we really appreciate its many gifts to us. The story across these installments is about a very difficult to love protagonist, what makes him the way he is, and the also-unhinged-but-in-a-different-way man who finally gets through to him. It’s an extremely satisfying love story and one of the best character arcs I have ever seen, full stop. For this one, you’ll want to just pull the word problematic out of your pocket and store it in a drawer; nearly everything that happens in this story is problematic and that’s the point. Lean in! All of these installments except for the film are on Gaga, if you get that far hmu and I will supply you with the final puzzle piece.
Our Dining Table (Gaga)
You could probably use a break after those last two, so it’s time to shift over to a heart-tugging twofer: family trauma mixed with the cutest shit you’ve ever seen. ODT is an example of another classic type of Japanese show: the food drama (you will see the GOAT in this category at the end of this list). In Japanese culture, food is love, and the act of preparing food for your loved ones is a common path to romance. You’ll love this story about an isolated office worker who meets a pair of brothers, learns to cook as a way of connecting with them, and begins to heal from his own trauma as a result. The image above is a scan from the manga, which @troubled-mind curates to make extremely cool comparison sets like this one. Many jbls are faithful adaptations of yaoi manga source material, so it’s good to have a bit of familiarity with them.
Minato’s Laundromat (Gaga)
gif by @liyazaki
Japanese media loves to explore taboo, and often manages to do it in a way that is surprisingly light and chaste. This is an age gap romance between a teenager and his adult neighbor that explores internalized homophobia, emotional repression, and falling in love across seemingly impossible social chasms. It’s also a great example of old school yaoi seme-uke dynamics that still show up across the bl genre. Also, take my advice: end your journey with this one with the first season and just pretend season 2 doesn’t exist.
Eternal Yesterday (Viki)
gif by @wanderlust-in-my-soul
Remember what I said about weird? Time to do that again, but with a heaping dose of grief and pain on top. It’s not a spoiler to tell you this show involves a major character death; a major character death is, in fact, the root of the entire story. This is a magic realist tale of first love turned tragic, and it will hurt and heal you. It is one of my favorite dramas of all time.
Restart After Come Back Home (Gaga)
And now for a break for your poor exhausted brain. This film is basically the jbl version of a Hallmark original movie, about a city boy who goes back home to the country and falls in love with a total sweetheart while working together on a farm. Enjoy it, bestie, you’ve earned it!
Tokyo in April Is… (Gaga)
gif by @wanderlust-in-my-soul
You’ve probably noticed by now that emotional repression and failed communication are big themes in Japanese works. This second chance romance has plenty of both, and it’s a great example of a kind of muted emotional style that Japan does so well, where the surface of the story seems almost placid and calm even as deep emotion roils underneath. This one (and Eternal Yesterday above) are part of a special line up of jbls on Japanese channel MBS called Tonku (Drama) Shower. The shows air one after another in the same time slot on Fridays (in Japan, perhaps Thursdays for you depending on where you live) and you truly never know what you’re gonna get, but they’re all interesting. Warnings on this one for sexual assault and trauma.
The End of the World With You (Viki)
Time for sexy and weird again, but even more so! This has to be one of the most unique bls ever made; it goes to some truly divine and strange places, and it feels incredibly queer while doing it. Made by the same screenwriter/director of the Pornographer series with a lot of the same sensibilities, but in a more heightened apocalyptic setting. This one has existential angst, a road trip, a redemption tale, and a variety of interesting side characters in the mix.
What Did You Eat Yesterday? (Gaga)
gif by @my-rose-tinted-glasses
Congratulations, you’ve reached the end of the list and your reward is watching one of the best bls of all time, and a perfect slice of life food drama to boot. WDYEY now has two seasons (along with a couple specials and a movie that fall in between) because the universe clearly loves us. You can now get it on Gaga for easy access but I’m partial to the versions over at @kinounaniresource for better subs. Wherever you watch, settle in to get cozy with Shiro and Kenji and make sure to always eat before you hit play.

Hello! I saw your tags on my post about Ossan’s Love Returns and just wanted to pop in and give you a little background on jbl that you might find helpful. It’s a misconception that all jbls are broadly comedic or done in an anime style. That’s certainly one popular lane of Japanese media, but there are many others!
I actually wrote a post with a suggested list of jbls to try to get a sense of the different styles and tones they do well, and I bet you’ll find something on here that’s more to your personal taste (https://www.tumblr.com/lurkingshan/736506298254884864/japanese-bl-starter-pack). And in my experience, a lot of that discomfort or inability to connect with a different country’s style resolves itself naturally through familiarity; the more of it you watch the more you’ll understand the cultural communication norms and rhythms, and it will open you up to enjoying and appreciating so much more. No country’s media is just one thing, and you really do have to be open to trying out a lot of stuff before you can know what you might enjoy. Maybe give it a shot!
Thanks for taking the time to send an ask, I have seen the post and I pretty much watched all the ones on there, I have also watched anime before (i have a few sitting on my hardrive just waiting for me to have the necessary spoons and spark to watch them), and it's true not all of them do have that style of humor i was generalizing a bit (my bad).
I have found a way to connect to some of the characters (and relationships) the way I usually do, like with Tanaka-kun to Amagi-kun or If it's with you and with His the movie (which I really enjoyed). And the Pornographer series which I re-watch often. I did also really enjoyed My Personal Weather Man and Utsusii Kare. I am also low-key a little bothered by how little some of these boys/men/adults are even allowed to hold hands (I do get why this happens, it's not their fault or anything, not blaming them at all, I am not neceserally talking about NC scenes, more just some of them just rarely touch or hug at all and it feels a bit weird, I come from a very touchy family and a low-key touchy culture so it is something I have to always keep in mind while watching)
In general when I say I have a hard time connecting to characters in jbl is more that while I understand what is going on and the emotions being presented to me I feel more external to them in a way that doesn't always elsewhere, it is 100% a me thing and the way my brain watches media weird. I have had this problem with other media not just JBL, some western media has left me like that too (sense8 is one, I struggled with that one, still haven't techincally finished it). And I have been watching western media in english for so long I even feel that way with Italian Media more often then not.
The humor thing is also a me thing, it took me ages to finish avatar the last airbender because i could not get pass the s1 humor given to aang (i didn't watch this growing up, I was an adult when I first came across it). I always I have a hard time with humor, of any kind of any culture, the best kind of humor for me it's the kind that I don't notice, meaning the unitrusive kind. The only times I laugh more then usual with media is when I am watching specific comedy specials and that is it. So honestly this is not on anybody but when someone says this thing is really funny i get this automatic hurge to back away slowly. I have a very weird relationship with humor.
#ask#lurkingshan#i am deeply weird (not deregotory just fact)#thanks for the ask#i do understand why people connect to jbl more especially if you value a good narrative and a tight plot

JBL PartyBox Ultimate MSRP $1,699.95 “It's big, it's brash, and the JBL PartyBox Ultimate will turn any party into a banger.” Positives It is noisy. Truly noisy. It is also superior and defined Wi-Fi connection implies hi-res sound The software is great Mic and electric guitar inputs Well-designed control board Disadvantages It is huge and hefty Karaoke functions could possibly be much better Pricey I experienced entirely forgotten that JBL ended up being giving myself its newest celebration presenter to examine. There have been some delays in shipping it to my residence in Canada, therefore simply slipped my head. The other time, as though to inquire of, “remember me?” the 87-pound JBL PartyBox Ultimate arrived to my porch in a box how big a tiny ice box. Standing almost 4 foot high, the truth is a beast. And I also imply that when you look at the greatest means. The most recent and biggest of JBL’s celebration presenter lineup, the leading “Ultimate” couldn’t surpass its title anymore than it will. It’s a bona fide celebration in a box you could wheel into any space, party hallway, or backyard to show the spot inverted with noise and light. At 1,100 watts RMS, it's among (if you don't the absolute most) effective celebration speakers available on the market, therefore’s the loudest and clearest-sounding I’ve heard, without breaking a-sweat. For simply $1,700, an informal doing work DJ would-be ready to go, out from the package, with this specific presenter. The best has actually integrated lights, mic inputs, sound-effects, tires, and a sturdy handle for lugging it from gig to gig. But that pricing isn’t also unreasonable for those of you simply trying to celebration — it will karaoke, has actually a great friend software, it is possible to connect a guitar engrossed, along with Wi-Fi connection, it may supply hi-res sound and hook up to your television for film evening, also (it also aids Dolby Atmos). It may possibly be huge, and preposterously noisy, but after fourteen days utilizing the JBL PartyBox Ultimate, I became astonished by its quality of sound and its own usefulness. Let’s dig much deeper. JBL PartyBox Ultimate: design Did we mention how large the PartyBox Ultimate is? It’s well worth saying. We are now living in a modest-sized residential district Toronto residence, and I also must clear the furnishings from my family area which will make area the unboxing. It comes down well-packed in Styrofoam, however, and ended up being not too difficult to leave of this package. If you’re carrying it out alone, but proceed with the guidelines imprinted in the box’s flap (constantly see the guidelines, children), since it causes it to be workable for starters individual. The presenter appears at 41.3 ins by 18.9-inches deep and 17.3-inches large. And, as previously mentioned, it weighs in at a hefty 87.1 weight, about 10 weight more substantial than JBL’s outbound winner, the JBL PartyBox 1000, and much more than just about any various other celebration presenter I’ve ever before encounter. One public-service statement I'm able to make in regards to the PartyBox Ultimate is maybe not carry it all on your own. Yes, this has a sturdy synthetic handle, the tires tend to be huge and smooth, therefore rolls around easily. But don’t also you will need to understand this thing up or down a collection of stairs by yourself. The back will thanks. The exterior layer is a tough, durable synthetic, aside from the steel presenter grille emblazoned utilizing the JBL logo design. The best is made like a missile and holds an IPX4 splashproof score, therefore pool functions or somewhat rainfall (or a spilled beverage) won’t be problematic.
Behind the grille sits numerous six JBL motorists: two honkin’ 9-inch subwoofers, bordered with LEDs that define the key appearance of the presenter, two 4.5-inch midrange speakers, as well as 2 2.75-inch tweeters. Regarding the straight back base of this presenter can also be a bass interface for extra reasonable end. Just what performedn’t carry-over through the PartyBox 1000 may be the bottom-facing subwoofer, although Ultimate does not want it. JBL claims the Ultimate gets the capacity to “rock [a space] the size of two basketball courts,” which, from my knowledge, is 100per cent real. Consistent with lots of celebration speakers, all of the settings tend to be well-situated at the top panel of this product and they are easily accessible. Two big dials control amount and lights, and you’ll additionally look for a Bluetooth pairing option, bass boost, plus the multi-speaker connect option. Above this is the automated celebration pad (more about this later on), and above being amount, EQ, and echo knobs the primary microphone. There’s also a slot where you could attach your smartphone or tablet. Unlike some celebration speakers, it is possible to get a grip on almost all of the Ultimate’s functions out of this top panel without the friend software, which will be great as you don’t want to count on getting your phone to you everyday. The PartyBox Ultimate is balanced, articulate, and something of this clearest-sounding speakers I’ve heard. On the rear of the greatest, behind a rugged safety flap, you’ll look for a panel of inputs, including two quarter-inch jacks, one the primary mic and another for mic 2/guitar, along with a USB-A interface for USB sticks and asking products, a 3.5mm AUX in, and in/out harbors for daisy-chaining with other PartyBox Ultimate speakers. There’s additionally a compartment for keeping the ability cable, making this time for you to point out the Ultimate doesn't have a battery, so that it must be connected in. However with this sort of liquid, that produces feeling. JBL PartyBox Ultimate: connection Getting attached to the PartyBox Ultimate is not hard and there are numerous choices. It may link via Wi-Fi (which will be brand-new for JBL celebration speakers, and uncommon for celebration speakers as a whole) and Bluetooth 5.3, as well as throughline input, AirPlay, Alexa Cast, and Chromecast. The JBL One app is well-designed and is the usual hub for all this connectivity, but Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect support means you can control those streaming services making use of their applications rather, if you like those interfaces. AirPlay additionally permitted us to link the greatest to my Apple television 4K for many severe film noise, along with use of my songs online streaming applications set up about it. This might be additionally enjoyable at gatherings considering that the tune details and record art shows on the television. I became many thinking about looking at the PartyBox Ultimate’s Wi-Fi capabilities, though, which not just permitted us to place it towards the test with hi-res, lossless high quality songs by way of indigenous Tidal, Qobuz, and Amazon musical integration when you look at the JBL One software, but inaddition it i'd like to hear Dolby Atmos-encoded songs songs (it’s really worth noting, however, that when there’s no Wi-Fi accessibility, you won’t have the ability to play hi-res songs anyway, since the Ultimate’s Bluetooth doesn't help it). The devoted Wi-Fi link additionally implied that phone notifications that could have generally rumbled out from the presenter over Bluetooth remained restricted to my phone — 100-plus decibels of tri-tone text message notifications will likely not appear pleasing at your celebration. JBL PartyBox Ultimate: noise and gratification Derek Malcolm / Top Reviewing But it's in fact ham-fisted to simply call-it loud. The PartyBox Ultimate is balanced, articulate, and something of this clearest-sounding speakers I’ve heard, also at unreasonable amounts.
We were able to lug the presenter to my children’s cabin for a weekend thus I could allow it to travel in a more impressive space along with nobody available for kilometers. And when you'll have walked by although we had been simply punishing the cabin wall space with from Dua Lipa, Daft Punk, and Wu Tang to My Bloody Valentine, brand new purchase, and Soundgarden, all synced with the Ultimate’s light show, you have endured in-line to have in. (And my cabin has actually a two-drink minimal.) Derek Malcolm / Top Reviewing we tested the greatest at a number of amounts, which range from across the 10per cent amount to 30per cent so that as noisy as around 60per cent, in which we just left it for a couple moments given that it ended up being simply also noisy. I’m certain in a much bigger area, like a banquet hallway, you might press it, but that is about in so far as I ended up being happy to get. What’s impressive is exactly how it performed for the range — neat and brilliant highs without fatiguing the ears, detail by detail and consistent mids, and punchy, tight bass that simply saturates and fills your upper body with songs like Billie Eilish’s Xanny (my go-to bass track). There’s additionally a two-level Bass Increase option that either adds much more circular and fat saturation (“Deep”) or tightens things with a lot more of a mid-chest punch (“Punchy”). As well as for additional fine-tuning, the JBL One software has actually a good five-band EQ with savable presets. It works really no matter what online streaming solution you utilize. I became additionally wondering to look at the Ultimate’s Dolby Atmos compatibility. Some men and women won’t utilize this, it's brand-new for JBL celebration speakers and touted inside their advertising products. The quick variation is the fact that it's simply okay, however it is based on two things. You have to be linked to Wi-Fi (it willn’t work over Bluetooth, AirPlay, or Chromecast) plus the online streaming solution will need Dolby Atmos songs songs offered, therefore we’re speaking Tidal, Amazon musical, or Apple musical. But the latter does not have any indigenous link when you look at the JBL One software (others do). And because AirPlay does not help Dolby Atmos or hi-res sound, you won’t have the ability to hear those through Ultimate. That stated, it's maybe not a deal breaker. Some Atmos monitors noise much better than other individuals, and even though some take action really, putting nuances like drums, vocals, and cool melody outlines with other components of the area, the 3D result is minor. Plus, it reduces the amount of this Atmos monitors significantly, so that you must goose it, meaning that you should be certain to drop the amount whenever a non-Atmos track happens otherwise … increase. The Ultimate additionally boasts a computerized room-tuning function that many people might understand from their particular Sonos speakers, however can’t truly test that given that it takes place immediately. Nevertheless presenter seems great wherever it's put — sides, contrary to the wall surface, call at the available, external — thus I believe it really works as promoted. Others functions i possibly couldn’t test had been the stereo pairing and daisy-chaining abilities (we just had the only presenter, thank heavens), which permit you to link several Ultimates collectively either without any cables or with 3.5mm cables for either stereo noise or perhaps an all-out noise attack that i possibly could see arriving useful for bigger functions. JBL PartyBox Ultimate: light program and celebration functions Derek Malcolm / Top Reviewing They’re known as “party speakers” for grounds, and therefore, naturally, goes beyond simply becoming loud. Although expert celebration DJ and burning clothes might sniff during the Ultimate among others of the ilk, you can find adequate fun functions baked in right here for many people to toss a good barn burner. All those functions tend to be managed because of the feature-rich JBL One software, but let’s focus on the lights.
In a nutshell, the PartyBox Ultimate lights up like a Christmas tree, with LEDS circling the double nine-inch woofers, strobes dotted across the face, and many outlines of LEDS accentuating the most notable, edges, and base of this presenter. With increased colors and presets than you’ll ever before require, it is possible to tweak away generate a custom light series or perhaps allow it to pulse along to whatever songs you are playing. Additionally you can get a grip on which lights tend to be mapped towards the actual light program switch over the presenter. Are the Ultimate’s lights brilliant adequate for a huge ballroom? No, instead of its very own. However it’s however fun and brilliant adequate for a small-to-medium-sized location. A couple of a lot more of these create around a space, but would-be impressive, if however you have a supplementary $3,400 lying around. For the DJs, the Ultimate’s noise result abilities basically because diverse. The five-slider result Lab part of the software is a huge amount of enjoyable, and myself and my 12-year-old child had a field time remixing Billy Eilish’s Bad Guy into a club track. “Filter” adds an envelope filter (it’s that noise that means it is feel like we have all already been drawn under liquid and right back), and “Echo” adds an escalating and de-escalating level of echo. You will find three various other trippy results being managed with sliders when you look at the software in order to add/remove power. It’s a huge amount of enjoyable. Another swipe off to the right starts up a selection of sound result buttons, such as the ever-popular horn, vinyl scraping noises, and hand claps, along with singing shouts like “Hey,” “Party,” and “Jump!” many of these noises is custom made and mapped towards the celebration pad over the presenter for simple accessibility, and you may develop an endless quantity of presets for all of them. Click on the photos below to get more information. Lastly, exactly what would a DJ or emcee be without a mic? The PartyBox Ultimate’s primary mic noises obvious and noisy and that can be managed with actual knobs over the presenter, which will be great as you don’t must crawl around towards the straight back panel like on various other speakers. You can make use of the software to manage these options, also. For others feedback, you merely must flip a switch to pick whether you’re utilizing a mic or a guitar. Both noise great, with exceptional amplification that has is managed with a little amount switch in the straight back, which will be its just downside. As the Ultimate’s karaoke functions … meh. Should this be an essential function available, you can find speakers which do anywhere near this much better. The Ultimate’s advertising products state so it has actually “karaoke EQ tuning,” which, as I’ve observed in various other celebration speakers just like the LG XBoom XL7, had myself anticipating its awesome function that may remove the vocals from almost any track from any origin, including online streaming solutions. To my frustration, this is simply not the way it is utilizing the Ultimate. When you can adjust the bass, tone, amount, and echo of this mic, that is it. But that does not suggest it's maybe not a great karaoke presenter when you have karaoke-ready songs to try out, or you utilize an attribute like Apple Music’s Sing. The effectiveness of the presenter and mic (and electric guitar) inputs should alllow for an enjoyable jam program, anyway. JBL PartyBox Ultimate: bottom range The JBL PartyBox Ultimate is that — the ultimate celebration presenter that JBL has actually available, and potentially that anybody has actually available. Its 1,100-watt production is, to make use of the technical term, bananas, and you will be many attracting men and women like everyday doing work DJs (benefits will make it work, also) and people just who toss plenty of huge functions or community gatherings (schools would want it) in medium-to-large areas.
There is issue of this $1,700 cost, that I believe is an excellent worth because of its abilities. Its significant to go around also, although reward is similarly therefore. Derek Malcolm / Top Reviewing Not to belabor the idea, although Ultimate is extremely, extremely noisy, and superior and processed whether you are playing grunge monitors, club bangers, or rallying partygoers towards the party flooring in the mic the Macarena (Google it). Its Wi-Fi connection is principally exactly what establishes it aside from its forerunner, the JBL PartyBox 1000, which will be additionally 1,100 watts, has its own of the identical lighting effects and DJ functions, and it is $400 cheaper (or higher when you are able to find it for sale). However it’s the Wi-Fi connection that, for me, helps make the Ultimate the higher option, since it provides you with use of higher-quality sound from hi-res online streaming resources, even more connection choices, and Dolby Atmos. But if it's simply amount you are after, then your PartyBox 1000 would-be a great option, also. Are there other choices? Definitely. The Soundboks 4 ($999), the LG XBoom lineup ($300 to $600), and Sony’s SRS-XV number of celebration speakers ($650 to $900), for instance, tend to be truly noisy adequate for many people, could save you some cash, tend to be battery-powered and less heavy for much better portability, and also have most of the exact same DJ and lighting effects functions (apart from the Soundboks). Go ahead and, if a person among these suits your financial allowance plus utilizes, have one. Or three. However, if you are frequently having to rattle all wall space of a banquet hall-sized space (and everybody inside), then you may need get Ultimate. [ad_1] As someone who has bought into the Sonos ecosystem to a nigh-on foolhardy degree, I was not expecting much from its new Ray soundbar. Not because the preeminent force in wireless speakers tends to make bad products, but rather I was trading down to a budget-minded soundbar from the premium $899 Sonos Arc. On the weekend of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Stranger Things 4 and the Champions League final no less. These are the very definition of first world problems to be dealing with, but I’d be lying if I wasn’t a little bit miffed.Of course, that was until I plugged the Ray into my 4K TV and gave it a go. While I’m not going to tell you this diminutive $279 boom box is every bit as good as its more premium cousins, it makes a strong case for itself. You see, however much money you have to spend on a speaker for your TV, what you really want to feel is a sense of scale from the device. Explosions should not sound like a ripple in the wind, hushed voices should cut through your room like a knife through butter and the roar of a crowd needs to convey that visceral rush of ecstasy. As much as you won’t find perfection in the Ray, it gets this important stuff right. How did I figure this out? When that “Running Up That Hill” scene hit in Stranger Things, I was on the edge of my seat, fully bought into the thrill ride.Small but mightyIn Sonos terms, the Ray is its third and cheapest soundbar to buy. It sits beneath both the ultra-luxe and truly spectacular Arc, and the still plenty accomplished, mid-range Beam that was refreshed last year with Dolby Atmos abilities. If you know much about speaker tech then you’ll find that the Ray has pretty much none of the top tier stuff associated with products that are double its price. That means no room-filling Atmos, no HDMI connectivity and no in-built voice assistant. I’m not going to tell you that none of this stuff is important, but it is less important in a speaker that’s knowingly designed for smaller TVs. Especially since the Ray packs a surprising audio punch for a product its size. At just 22 inches wide and a smidge under 4 inches deep, it tucks nimbly away after a speedy app-enabled setup without any risk of overhang or imposing itself on your room in general.Being a Sonos product, you can also use it as a regular speaker for podcasts, playlists and listening to the new Kendrick Lamar record on infinite repeat. You can tune the Ray’s audio to your house using Sonos’ Trueplay tech, it’ll receive regular updates via the Sonos app and will play nicely with any other products you choose to pair with it such as the Sonos One or that heavily rumored Sub Mini that’s in the works. Honestly, you could happily use the thing as a dinner party speaker if the occasion demanded it. Although you’re going to lose a little in the way of clarity if you really ramp yours up to 11, there’s no doubting its blockbuster credentials at half that volume with weighty bass being well-balanced with its treble and mid-range.Sonos Ray verdictAll of which begs the question, should you actually buy a Ray? If you’re still yet to invest in a soundbar for your TV, then this Sonos enters the affordable fray as an immediate contender for your cash. As much as the JBL Bar 5.0 Multibeam and Roku Streambar are both well-regarded alternatives, they don’t come with the same pedigree and longevity via software updates and potential add-on speakers. Judged solely on its own performance, the Ray manages to feel like a luxury while being the kind of product you can treat yourself to without wincing at the expense. It may just be the perfect starter Sonos speaker. Preorder the Sonos Ray soundbar below, which is estimated to ship June 7, 2022.This story was originally published on British GQ with the headline, “The Sonos Ray Is Your Perfect Starter Soundbar”. Hiii!
So I’ve been using your JBL starter pack from last year as a bit of a guide and thanks to you, Old Fashion Cupcake is my favourite BL ever! I love those two and their little cake dates with all my heart.
But! I’ve recently arrived at the Pornographer series and trying to find Playback is like trying to find a BL boy who doesn’t immediately get sick after being in the rain for a sec. Noticed you’ve kindly suggested asking you for this sooo if you know where it lives, I’d be very grateful if you could please point me in the right direction. Thank youuuu!
Oh yay, I'm so glad you're making your way through the list! The film goes up on grey sites often but not always with good subs and it inevitably gets taken down every time. I have the file so I'll DM you a link to where you can grab it.

Bowl game gifts 2018, categorized
Bowls are allowed to give players small gift packages, and these days, they do a good job of putting together interesting gifts.
Bowl games are good, mainly because most players view them as rewards for successful seasons. One part of that reward: bowl gifts, or the small handouts bowls are allowed by the NCAA to give players.
Sports Business Daily came through with the full rundown of who’s getting what this year. Sure, the NCAA-mandated $550 limit for each player isn’t much, but that’s not the fault of these bowl games. Let’s run through them all.
Gifts that are the most fun!
Frisco Bowl (San Diego State vs. Ohio): Gift suite; Justin cowboy hat; beanie cap; coin; pin; Big Game football
Hawaii Bowl (Louisiana Tech vs. Hawaii): Electronics gift suite; Oakley backpack; Oakley sunglasses; Tori Richard aloha shirt; shorts/swim trunks; performance T-shirt; beach towel
WANT:
Amazon
Orange Bowl (Alabama vs. Oklahoma): Gift suite; Tourneau watch; personalized bobblehead of each student-athlete; sling bag
Hey Orange Bowl, how does one get a personalized bobblehead even if they aren’t a player on either team?
Quick Lane Bowl (Minnesota vs. Georgia Tech): $175 Best Buy gift card; JBL E55BT over-ear wireless headphones; life-sized Fathead decal for each participant of his likeness; backpack; shirts; mini helmet; football
Likewise with the Fathead, Quick Lane Bowl:
Fathead
Texas Bowl (Baylor vs. Vanderbilt): Gift suite; Academy Sports + Outdoors gift card; Adidas backpack; belt buckle
The Texas Bowl belt buckle remains one of my all-time favorite gifts, because well, just look at this thing:
Belt Buckles are in! These will be included in the player gift bags along with other various pieces of #bowlswag pic.twitter.com/KBtn07G29D
— Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl (@TexasBowl) December 18, 2013
Cheez-it Bowl (Cal vs. TCU): — Fossil watch with engraved caseback; JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker; Baggo bag toss tailgate cornhole set; Yeti Roadie 20 cooler; Yeti rambler; dry duffel bag; RuMe reveal quart bag; Branded Bills cap; Dollar Shave Club starter set.
Folks, players get one of these bad boys:
Victory Tailgate
Now a lifetime supply of Cheez-Its would also be a good idea for a gift in the future. Just sayin’.
Gifts that give players the most freedom to use how they want
A gift card is one of the closest things to actual money players are allowed by the NCAA to receive, so every bowl should include gift cards.
Camping World Bowl (West Virginia vs. Syracuse): $400 Best Buy gift card; Ogio backpack with luggage tag; Fossil watch
Alamo Bowl (Iowa State vs. Washington State): $425 Amazon gift card; Fossil watch; mini helmet; team panoramic photo
Peach Bowl (Florida vs. Michigan): $300 Vanilla Visa gift card; Fossil watch; Mophie Powerstation XL; Amazon Echo Dot smart speaker (3rd generation); football
A Mophie powerstation is a portable charging station, a very convenient gift.
Outback Bowl (Mississippi State vs. Iowa): Fossil watch; Jostens ring; $125 Best Buy gift card; Outback Steakhouse Gift card; hat
Anything that involves steak is a damn good gift, imo.
Military Bowl (Cincinnati vs. Virginia Tech): Dell Mobile Projector M318WL; $100 Amex Gift Card; ISlides
I really didn’t realize how players would make much use of this:
youtube
Until I realized this things means you get to stream shows from your phone and then project them anywhere you’d like. So, I take it back!
Citrus Bowl (Kentucky vs. Penn State): $400 Best Buy gift card; Fossil watch; Ogio backpack with luggage tag
The Fiesta Bowl, sponsored by PlayStation, is true to its name
Fiesta Bowl (LSU vs. UCF): PS4 gift package; Fossil watch with engraved caseback; Ogio X-Fit backpack
It should’ve given players another recliner, tbh:
Joe Burrow on Fiesta Bowl gifts (he’s been twice with Ohio State). Said first he got a red recliner (which he still uses), then got headphones the second time. Literally a recliner. Packed it in the car and took it with him to #LSU. It’s in his apartment now.
— Brooks Kubena (@BKubena) December 11, 2018
And some other sweet tech-related gifts
Gator Bowl (NC State vs. Texas A&M): Fossil watch; Maui Jim sunglasses; Amazon Echo; ISlides; SIC tumbler; dopp kit
Amazon Echos seems pretty dope!
Amazon
(Unrelated to technology: a “dopp kit” is just a toiletry bag.)
Red Box Bowl (Michigan State vs. Oregon): Fossil watch; Timbuktu backpack; Roku; headphones; Redbox Bowl merchandise
A Roku is a solid TV streaming platform.
Arizona Bowl (Arkansas State vs. Nevada): Ghostek backpack with a power bank and external USB port; Beats Budst; Fire Kindle with built-in Alexa; hydroflask; cooling towel; Frito Lay products in each bag
Amazon
Dollar General Bowl: (Buffalo vs. Troy): Yamaha sound bar with built-in subwoofer; Timely Watch Co. watch; Maui Jim sunglasses; Wilson game ball
Who doesn’t love shopping trips?
Again, letting players actually choose what they get is preferable to just about anything else.
Belk Bowl (South Carolina vs. Virginia): Shopping trip to Belk department store; Fossil watch
In 2016, an Arkansas player was suspended from the Belk Bowl after he was accused of shoplifting $260 worth of items on the Belk shopping trip, so hopefully something like that doesn’t happen again!
Liberty bowl (Missouri vs. Oklahoma State): Shopping trip to Memphis’ Bass Pro Shops; Bose SoundLink micro Bluetooth speaker; Bulova watch; Nike athletic shoes; sport sandals; backpack and sunglasses; football
Memphis’ Bass Pro is literally inside a pyramid!
Gifts mostly made up “gift suites,” which can mean lots of different things
What are gift suites exactly? They’re private events in which participants can pick from a variety of items — from electronics to jewelry and even furniture — worth up to a total of $550.
Game participants, and often bowl VIPs, are given an order form and allowed to select a gift, or gifts, up to a value that is predetermined by each bowl, not to exceed the NCAA limit.
The NCAA allows each bowl to award up to $550 worth of gifts to 125 participants per school. Schools can, and usually do, buy additional packages that they can distribute to participants beyond that 125 limit. In addition, participants can receive awards worth up to $400 from the school and up to $400 from the conference for postseason play, covering both conference title games and any bowl game.
Rose Bowl (Washington vs. Ohio State): Gift suite; Fossil watch; Ogio backpack; New Era 9Fifty adjustable hat
Sugar Bowl: (Texas vs. Georgia) Gift suite; Fossil watch; New Era cap; Rock ’Em socks; cufflinks
Las Vegas Bowl (Fresno State vs. Arizona State): Gift suite; collectible Las Vegas item TBD; dad hat; beanie; fanny pack
DAD HAT! What is a dad hat?! According to Google, it’s just your standard, run-of-the-mill baseball caps that most dads wear.
Google
New Orleans Bowl (Middle Tennessee vs. Appalachian State): Gift suite; Fossil watch
Cameilla Bowl (Georgia Southern vs. Eastern Michigan): Gift suite; Fossil watch; Samsonite rolling duffle bag; beanie; Big Game football
Boca Raton Bowl (UAB vs. Northern Illinois): Gift suite; drawstring backpack; beach towel; football
Gasparilla Bowl (Marshall vs. South Florida): Gift suite
Hopefully that’s a dope gift suite — if I were the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl, I’d just give a gift suite of lawn mowers filled with presents, tbh.
Sun Bowl (Stanford vs. Pitt): Gift suite; Timely Watch Co. watch; Majestic fleece pullover; Ogio Excelsior backpack; Under Armour cap; coin
Bahamas Bowl (FIU vs. Toledo): Gift suite; Yeti rambler; string backpack; board shorts; towel; pin
Idaho Potato Bowl (Western Michigan vs. BYU): Gift suite; Oakley backpack; hydroflask; beanie
A “hydroflask” is an insulated water bottle — what were you thinking it was?
Amazon
Birmingham Bowl (Memphis vs. Wake Forest): Gift suite; Oakley backpack or sunglasses; cooling hoodie; football
Holiday Bowl (Northwestern vs. Utah): Gift suite; Fossil watch; New Era cap
Armed Forces Bowl (Houston vs. Army): Gift suite; Bluetooth speaker helmet; football
First responder bowl (Boston College vs. Boise State): Gift suite; RFID-blocking Ridge wallet; Big Game football
This wallet looks like it was designed by NASA, tbh:
Amazon
Independence Bowl (Temple vs. Duke): Gift suite; Timely Watch Co. watch; New Era skull cap; football
Music City Bowl (Purdue vs. Auburn): Gift suite; Fossil watch
Sidenote — there are a lot of Fossil watches on here. Sure, Fossil watches are fine, but we should definitely give these players some variety when it comes to timepieces in the next few years!
Grab bags! Little bit of everything in these!
Cure Bowl (Tulane vs. Louisiana): Holloway Force jacket; sunglasses with carry case; Energizer powerbank (similar to the Mophie mentioned above); duffle bag; Pebble Beach slides; dopp kit; Sportek long-sleeve contender T-shirt; cap
New Mexico Bowl (North Texas vs. Utah State): Gift suite; Oakley Jupiter Squared sunglasses; Oakley 5 Speed backpack; Bluetooth speaker; water bottle; beanie; Montgomery pen; Pacific Headwear trucker’s cap
SECRET GIFTS
Pinstripe Bowl: A variety of New Era products
Cotton Bowl (Clemson vs. Notre Dame): Would not disclose gifts
CFP National Championship: Would not disclose gifts
Sure, some of these bowl gifts are better than others, but you can appreciate these games coming up with creative ways to reward players during the holiday season, even if they aren’t allowed to do very much.

Best Cyber Monday 2018 smart-home deals still available: Nest thermostat for $139, Echo Dot for $30, Philips Hue and more
New Post has been published on https://www.articletec.com/best-cyber-monday-2018-smart-home-deals-still-available-nest-thermostat-for-139-echo-dot-for-30-philips-hue-and-more/
Best Cyber Monday 2018 smart-home deals still available: Nest thermostat for $139, Echo Dot for $30, Philips Hue and more
Looking to expand your smart-home setup? You’re in luck, because some Cyber Monday deals are still live and going strong — but time is running out.
The 2018 holiday shopping season has delivered some of the best bargains we’ve ever seen on Alexa and Google Assistant gadgets, smart thermostats from names including Nest and Ecobee, connected lighting kits, video doorbells, app-enabled robot vacuums — you name it.
Update: Deals and availability confirmed on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 11:40 a.m. ET.
To that end, here’s a running list of all the best deals you can still pick up this year, including any leftover sales from Black Friday and Cyber Monday that are still live (believe me, there are a couple of really good ones). We’ve kicked things off with deals from Amazon, then followed suit with bargains from Target, Best Buy, Walmart, Lowe’s and Home Depot. We’re keeping our eyes peeled for online deals from names such as Newegg and Dell, too.
Remember the usual caveats: Stock levels and prices fluctuate throughout the sale period with many items selling out fast. We’ll update this page with the latest information, so keep it bookmarked. And please know that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products featured on this page.
(Oh, and if you’re looking for the best smart TV deals, or deals on smart appliances and kitchen gadgets like the Instant Pot, we’ve got those listed in separate posts. Just click the links to see the full rundowns.)
Got it? Good. Now let’s get to the deals.
Deals available now
Nest Thermostat E for $139 (save $30)
Chris Monroe/CNET
The best Cyber Monday deal on the Nest Thermostat E was at Newegg, and it brought the price down $40, to $129. That offer is sold out, but you can still score an almost-as-good $30 discount at Best Buy.

Two Google Home Mini speakers: $58 (save $40)
Chris Monroe/CNET
Google’s answer to Amazon’s Alexa is no longer on sale for its $25 Black Friday price, but if you want to go all-in on Google Assistant by buying two, the savings is still pretty sweet.
To get this price you must add two Google Home Mini speakers to your cart at checkout.

Google Home Mini + WeMo Mini smart plug: $58 (save $30)
Tyler Lizenby/CNET
One of the smallest smart plugs available, the WeMo Mini is just the right size — and we really liked it. Paired with a Home Mini it lets you realize the dream of voice-automated control of Christmas lights, or just about any other plug-in thingy.
To get this discount you have to add a Google Home Mini and a WeMo mini smart plug to your cart.

Google Home Mini + Chromecast: $69 (save $20)
CNET / Sarah Tew
If you want to get Google’s voice control paired with a TV, this bundle is one cheaper way to go. It includes the newest Chromecast streaming dongle and a Home Mini speaker for a substantial savings.
To get this discount you have to add a Google Home Mini and a Google Chromecast to your cart.
Note that Target’s $20 discount is still $5 more expensive than the same bundle at Walmart, where it’s called the “Google Smart TV Kit” and currently costs $64 (and includes a $15 credit for Vudu). But maybe that Walmart price has reverted back to $74 by the time you read this — or maybe you just like Target $5 better.

Amazon Echo Dot (third-gen) for $30 (save $20)
Tyler Lizenby/CNET
Note: Item is currently in stock but delivery is delayed until Dec. 10.
Amazon has a relatively aggressive discount available now for the new, third-gen Echo Dot, too. At just $30, you’ll be able to get it for almost half off. That’s not quite as good as the $24 sale we saw on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but it’s still a good deal if you missed out.

Amazon Smart Plug for $5 with purchase of any Echo device (save $20)
Ry Crist/CNET
Note: Item is currently in stock but delivery is delayed until Dec. 4.
Picking up a new Echo Dot, or any other Echo gadget? You can tack an Amazon Smart Plug on to your order for just $5. Plug it in and plug something like a lamp or a space heater into it, and you’ll be able to tell Alexa to turn it on and off via your new Echo gadget. And if you’d rather shop at Best Buy, it’s offering the same deal.
Update: As of Monday Nov. 26 at 5 a.m. PT, it appears this deal is no longer available from Amazon (instead, it’s offering a $10 deal on a TP-Link Smart Plug).

Amazon Echo (second-gen) for $70 (save $30)
Ian Knighton/CNET
It isn’t just the Dot — Amazon’s basically running a sale on its entire fleet of Alexa-enabled smart speakers. That includes a $30 discount on Alexa’s flagship, the second-gen Amazon Echo. That discount brings the price down to $70, more than $100 less than the original Echo sold for. And note that the popular Product Red Edition Amazon Echo is now back in stock.
That price looks like to be available elsewhere, too, including at Target and at Best Buy.

Echo Button two-pack for $14 (save $6)
Ry Crist/CNET
Amazon’s Echo Buttons seemed like gimmicky, kid-friendly Alexa extras when they debuted last year, letting you buzz in during Alexa trivia games or play an Alexa-hosted memory game. But the Buttons got a lot more interesting this month when Amazon started letting users trigger their Alexa Routines with the things.
That lets you use them as makeshift light switches, magic buttons that can trigger your smart home scenes, or any number of other creative uses. Available now at just $14 for a two-pack, the time to give these gizmos a shot might have arrived.

Ecobee Switch Plus for $79 (save $20)
Chris Monroe/CNET
Ecobee didn’t just put Alexa into a thermostat — they put Amazon’s assistant into this teeny tiny light switch with a built-in microphone and speaker, too. It’s marked down by $20. Amazon and Best Buy have deals of their own going as well, to varying degrees.

Lenovo 8-inch Smart Display for $150 (save $50)
Chris Monroe/CNET
We’ve tested all of the impressive new Google Assistant smart displays this year — Lenovo’s was the first, and I think it’s still my favorite. Best Buy has the 8-inch version marked down by fifty bucks, bringing the price down to $150, and the deal is live right now. Not as good as the $100 discount you were able to score for Cyber Monday, but still a good price for a device that tested well in the CNET Smart Home.
Lenovo’s larger, 10-inch version of the Smart Display is marked down by $50, too, bringing the cost to $199. It might be bigger than you’d want if counterspace comes at a premium in your kitchen, but the upgraded, bamboo backing looks really nice, so it’s worth considering.

Nest Cam Indoor for $129 (save $70)

Nest’s smart security cameras are all pretty solid picks, but they don’t come cheap. Fortunately, you’ll be able to score a pretty sizable $70 discount on the original Nest Cam Indoor at Best Buy this Cyber Monday, bringing the cost down to $129. It’s not the newest model, but it’s still a worthy pick, especially at this price.

And, despite the fact that they’ve been out for a few years now, Cree’s Connected LEDs, which work with Zigbee controllers like the Philips Hue Bridge and the Amazon Echo Plus, are still some of our favorite bargain bulbs.
