she jazz on my punk til my poly blanks
wanted to go for more of a 60s watercolor sketch vibe with this one, the eye was a stylistic choice bc none of the jazzpunk characters technically have eyes, but it felt weird not to give her any. so she gets ONE.

my wacky animal crossing band AU headcanon hehe haha huhu
okay real talk i’ve had this little fake band thing in my head for years and I wanna get it out
so this is inspired by a line where isabelle da dog mentions having a band. they play fast wacky post-hardcore jazzpunk together.
the lineup is:
cherry - guitar, occasional vocal
tabby - bass, main vocalist
isabelle - percussion, other main vocalist
idk what their band name is. i prob would've named them something stupid like "Yeastie Girlz" or some shit if that name wasn't already taken.
isabelle and cherry know each other from youth when they did juvie kid shit back in the day lol. they stayed hooked up with each other when they went through their own young adult periods, and then went back to living in the same town when they moved to the poppin island village of Mycelium. they met tabby on that island and she joined up with their band because of simpatico vibes.
releases are usually albums with a shitload of small tracks with maybe one or two kinda long ones, and then sometimes an EP with a small number of really long tracks. cherry throws a lot of effects on her guitar so her playing ends up sounding like a bunch of loud chirping and wobbly metal scraping and wee woo wee woo. tabby plays her bass lines fast, has a boppy funky sound to playing, is not afraid to put on an effect pedal though usually to make her bass to sound like a wall of grotty rhythmic drones. isabelle can’t really go free jazz freakish on percussion bc their songs are ultimately too structured to allow that, but she tries! she can also do blastbeats. really fucking technical, building all those PWPs must’ve made her jacked
they're all pretty serious about their love of jazz. alright here's more info about them individually
isabelle - she grew up in the country and still has that farm kid twang to her voice. crazy childhood but filing taxes really ended up affecting her deeply and now she's by far the most well-adjusted member of the group if you define "well-adjusted" in a certain way. got a very impressive engineering degree in college, and as a reward she now works a lousy government job for a pittance + 500 bells that she WILL spend impulsively on something stupid. cherry sometimes jokes around about how she's a sellout for that but it aint serious, she understands the common worker's struggle. and, yknow, isabelle sincerely cares about doing the best for her town in the system she's stuck in so like, cmon dont be harsh on her. her public face is pretty mild-mannered, sometimes shes kinda matter-of-fact about things, but overall she nails that peppy energy everyone loves to receive from people in service when she's not flubbing stuff too much. in her personal life -- well, she doesn't have THAT many friends out there -- but with the ones she does have, she likes to be a little goofball, especially when linking zany energies with tabby. she has like a 4 year old's sense of humor but if anyone can sell peepee poopoo humor its her dumb ass. sings lead vocals on about half of their songs, her voice is loud, bright, and honestly pretty goofy because of that Country Gurl accent she has, but fits well with the generally nonserious and kinda everything-happening-at-once vibe of their music. what're her fits like, btw? an absolutely delightfully meticulous (she comes up with 90% of her wardrobe on the fly) combination of christian girl autumn, normcore, sillywave, raymondpunk, bio-wibbletech, and just a dash of edgy looking band merch or novelty t-shirts to really complete the look.
cherry - the thoughful, philosophical engine of the group even though she hardly writes any lyrics and mostly sits in the back making funny neenee noodleynoo noises with her guitar but trust me here. grew up in the same rural town as isabelle, and ended up moving back in a town where izzy now works! (its only like 75% a coincidence, she had to chase the money and figured Mycelium job market and being able to see her bestie was the best choice) She works a dead-end bullshit retail job on the island and always looks like she wants to kill everybody there. very loudly a proud commie through and through, she likes to wear this little red-guard lookin hat everywhere. the band are not embarrassed about their leftist messaging but cherry is by far the most motivated to stir up some shit. she helps organize locally and is very serious about reading up on Theory and has very little tolerance for poseurs. VERY occasionally does lead vocals, in that case she's writing the lyrics, hers are a lot more existential and political in nature than the other two's. very deep voice, she basically sounds like a scary Goth yknow? her singing voice is monotone and basically just her normal voice with more authority. she likes to put on an austere face but she's the easiest to make laugh, even at isabelle's dumbass jokes -- the other gals of course take advantage of this to tease her. as a strongly passionate individual she is also the most likely to start ranting at her computer screen when she's having trouble with something. she's got a pretty solid costume for concert appearances and photo ops that makes her probably the most recognizable member: Mao hat, long jacket, ragged looking pants, combat boots, and a pair of sunglasses.
tabby - every band needs the crazy one! she could bomb a hospital and the band would still have to drag her along because she's just that fucking good at bass. absolutely crazy mastery of speed and technique, her bouncing basslines usually provide a melodic counterpart to cherry's industrial vague notions towards "music" and whatever the fuck isabelle is doing back there. she's the only one without any classical training, though! as the lead bassist, she keeps the lead guitarist and lead drummer in check, creating a beautiful homeostasis of chaotic, highly technical songwriting and playing with all the brutality and energy of hardcore punk but also some of that inherent nerd-ass quality that comes with having three extremely proficient instrumentalists that know how to do a lot of things with their instruments. but enough of that bullshit, we gotta get to her VOCALS! she covers the majority of non-isabelle songs and her voice contrasts nicely -- isabelle has a deeper voice, sings brashly and over-the-top like she's eartha kitt doing i wanna be evil if she held her notes twice as long, but yknow she's been in classes for that and knows what she's doing and has a wide octave range. tabby meanwhile sounds like a living cartoon character.... BECAUSE SHE IS ONE!! but seriously she's got that high pitched peppy voice, but with enough roughness and scratchyness to it to make it actually fit the music. her speaking voice is actually pretty normal, but on the mic she leans into the most nasal, obnoxious tones possible. she got that shmorky voice to her i wont lie BUT SHE MAKES IT WORK!!! just say shes like uhhhh female psychicpebbles or something so you dont make her look lame. im being overdramatic about her voice btw, she actually has a pretty decent range and a FANTASTIC growl + scream but those only come out every-so-often. her lyrics are often violent, disgusting, brutally blunt in detail, and she's the one most inclined to doing crazy antics on stage. she usually comes to concerts in full leather wrapped with chains and parts of her body tied up and shit and like whatever nasty looking medical equipment she could find to put on her face and after each concert will be taken home bleeding from at least 2 or 3 different places. she's pretty chill irl though, but definitely as big as a goofball as isabelle. isabelle's the one that always takes leads on a goof attack, and tabby plays second-hand along with chief goof-strategist much to the annoyance/mirth of cherry. isabelle and cherry dont know much about her past yet bc she's pretty mum on talking about it much, but apparently she had rich parents but cut contact with them years back, and now just has an average ol life doing part time as a janitor, odd jobs on the side, and living in a nasty little apartment with her roomie katt. still, that general wealth helped a little, and she was able to build what she saved into a fairly stable life, so she's usually the one paying out of pocket for most of the band expenses. she's legit though, u know that because cherry would've beat her up otherwise
umm yess that's basically all i have to say i will post more if i remember more. if nintendo hires me i will also add to the canon that their 1st album name is "Poopin in the Boys Room" but that's not canon yet.

Research: Unusual video game art styles
Limbo
Limbo is a puzzle platformer game developed by Playdead. The game follows a young boy who travels through the edge of hell in search of his sister.
The art direction of the game is seemingly simplistic, being very flat and monochrome, and this was by design to make focus on puzzles the main gameplay priority. The horror focus however was based on developer's Jensen's childhood fears, dealing with arachnophobia, and noir films, leading to the transition from a forest to a worn down city as the game progressed.
The game has been praised heavily for it's art direction with how unique it is and how much it amplifies the plot and horror influence.
youtube
Jazzpunk
If we're talking cult classic indie games, then look no further than Jazzpunk. Developed by Necrophone Games, the game is essentially a first person point-and-click adventure game filled to the brim with pop culture references, random visual gags and surreal comedy. There is a story, but it really has no meaning or importance to what you do.
Jazzpunk is striking in the way it looks with two primarily artistic influences: Soviet Union art and Japanese graphic design, with a few specific artists thrown in there like Saul Bass and Gerd Arntz. This combination is extremely unique and seeing this game try to embody these flat styles in 3D also adds flavour. Each level has a unique look, though my personal favourite level is The Wetworks purely for the Designer's Republic influence.
youtube

Vib Ribbon
Another cult classic being brought up here. Vib Ribbon was a rhythm game developed by Nanaon-Sha, who also made Parappa the Rapper. The game is made entirely out of vector graphics, with stages consisting of a single white line with differently shaped obstacle on a black backdrop. The game's charm comes from two factors: It's protagonist, Vibri, and the music that comes with the game.
This strange lil rabbit made entirely of these lines doesn't go for the simplest route you could whens making a character out of lines. With them overly detailed eyes and Pac-Man shaped head, you cannot forget a face like Vibri's. Plus her upbeat and peppy personality as mainly portrayed in the game's tutorial is extremely charming.
The game has a reason for looking the way it does though: It's gimmick is that you can insert your own music CDs to generate levels and play them! Even with other games with the swapping out disks gimmick, this game took it to the next level. But if you have no disks, you can pick six of the wonderfully unique yet somewhat lyrically depressing pop songs from the Japanese band Laugh and Peace, and these tracks are bangers.
youtube

Song of the Soil
Song of the Soil is an indie game with art direction by Henry Driver made for a weeklong gamejam called the Climate Jam, where you had to make a game based on the environment, and this game is made with research from the Johns Innes Center. The game is focused on visuals, dialouge and music as you solve puzzles to reconnect a web that is losing it's influence and sources.
The entire game is of lines and shapes akin to a microscopic view of a leaf with a ton of colour. It's very visually stimulating to be sure, but it also has a unique and other-worldly vibe.

Jazzpunk world map vibes
(I'm assuming this art may have been an inspiration for it. Writing/world building also)

in 1992, Douglas Coupland envisioned what North America would look like in 2092.

“You’re not dead, you still have something to say”
Leaving people is hard.
Polyblank knew that. He’d left behind everybody he loved twice in his life. The first time he’d been able to send letters but, being a nexus agent sort of cut him off from contacting people from his past. It was a security risk.
Leaving people is harder when you find out they died hating you. Edwin never sent a letter back. Poly wondered if he even read the ones he was sent. So when he heard the entire family was killed in their house, it was upsetting. He always planned to find a way back one day. To find a way to apologize for leaving. Maybe even be friends again.
But wishing for things that can’t happen never did anybody any good, so he tried not to linger on it. He also tried not to linger on it when he heard his sister had disappeared while looking for him shortly after. Key word there is tried. He lingered a lot.
Thankfully despite his job he did eventually make friends that weren’t his boss and his boss’ Secretary. It was a bit ironic that him and Red became so close outside of work, he was best friends with the girl who’d helped kidnap Director and IX. Director was less than enthused about it, but didn’t say too much on the topic. IX didn’t seem to care much either way.
Currently him and Red were window-shopping in a mall that recently opened near Poly’s house, and just idly chatting about life, Red had began explaining what life in the penthouse was like.
“-and Jimmy, well, he’s just chaotic. He’s always trying to do something, and usually it’s something impulsive and stupid, you’ve only seen him while he’s working so you haven’t seen him in action but trust me, left to his own devices that man is a loose canon!”
[Jimmy?] The name appeared on the screen Poly used to communicate, he pushed down any surprise, he’d known a Jimmy who was a twin in school, he’d actually introduced Poly to Edwin and Jimmy’s brother Johnny, straight up picked him up like a person sized plush toy and ran over shouting about how Edwin wasn’t the only human in the school anymore. But there was no way this Jimmy was the same guy, right?
“Yeah, one of the trenchcoat brothers. The other is named Johnny, he’s a nice guy. He can be chaotic too but he knows when it’s appropriate. He actually has his own house. Lives with his wife and child. They’re both Ed’s best friends from high school.” Red paused, “.. don’t tell him I told you that, he’d probably be pretty angry. But I know you’re not the type to use that stuff against somebody, so I trust you to keep a secret.”
Poly tried his best not to let it should that his head was spinning, Jimmy and Johnny, twin brothers, high school besties with a guy who went by Ed… If they were the same Jimmy and Johnny that meant Editor had to be Edwin. But the Edwin he’d known wouldn’t hurt a fly. He certainly wasn’t cut out to run a huge business operation full of shady activity and murder.
But then again the kid Poly had been in high school didn’t line up with his current self either. Sure he still had the impulsiveness and the chaos but, as Logan he’d really been a brooding pessimistic type of person. Sort of the ‘give up before you try’ type on most things. None of that was true in the least anymore. So… maybe Editor could be his old friend.
But could he even tell them? Would Ed still hate him? Would Jimmy and Johnny be bitter with him for vanishing? … Red wouldn’t help with a scheme to get Poly’s past to use it against him right..?
“Poly? Poly are you okay?” Red was frowning at him, a look of concern on her face. Poly forced a smile and gave a thumbs up, he pointed out some random display and dragged Red over to look at it.
He wouldn’t tell them. Not yet. It was too risky.
But it was nice to know they were okay.

I have discovered (discovered in BIG air quotes btw) a new type of character that I would like to call the Reactive Narrator(working name)
*LONGPOST INCOMING I apologize in advance*
Now to fit into this character trope a character has to be a.) reactive to player input/choices and b.) speak to the player/player character directly
The rules are really flexible though; I’m mainly working off of vibes here!
These characters can be anywhere on the morality spectrum too! (That’s the fun part!) They’re usually pretty snarky, and the player character usually works against them, but man does the witty banter be fun
But anyways here’s a working list of the characters that I have judged so far to fit this character trope!
1.) Polybank from Jazzpunk (at least I’m pretty sure he fits from what I’ve seen of the guy)
2.) Narrator from The Stanley Parable (this one’s a bit of a given! He’s one of the reasons I thought about this in the first place actually)
3.) Mr. Voice from Little Misfortune (Reason Number Two as to why I thought about this! Responsive + Storytelling!)
4.) The guy from The Corridor (very niche game, I know. He also doesn’t have a canonical name to my knowledge)
5.) Game from There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension (not much to say about him really! He just kinda fits, you know?)
6.) The guy from Dude, Stop! (I know he does have a name, but I don’t remember it at the moment D:)
7.) GLaDoS from Portal (Again, one of the reasons I made this thing in the first place! Witty banter can substitute for reactivity)
8.) Wheatley from Portal 2 (He fits in both of his forms! From lovable guide to [SPOILERS])
9.) Squid from Will You Snail (Probably the most reactive of the bunch! You get a lot of back-and-forth with this guy)
10.) The Announcer(s? I always thought there were two of them) from Superliminal (might be wrong on the naming here, but I think they fit the bill well!)
And those are my ten! Any others you guys can think of?
#jazzpunk#the stanley parable#little misfortune#The corridor#there is no game#dude stop#portal#portal 2#will you snail#superliminal#tagging this like a crossover is funny#writing#i guess?#I’m not tagging the individual characters we’d be here forever

Blacksmith’s Forge
Started out as a PJO Au involving only Fundy but then expanded to include the rest of the Cogchamp SMP crew
Kid of Hephaestus, real Leo Valdez vibes seeing as Fundy always has a tool belt on wherever he goes even if he doesn't need it
Having grown up in the mines, Fundy's extremely confused when a man in a wheelchair comes rolling up telling him about some camp
At first thinking it's some type of camp for troubled teens, not really having the best luck when it comes to authorities. Unable to count the amount of times he's ran from the coppers
Whether it's simple graffiti or a joyride on a stolen motorcycle, Fundy can't seem to care. Whatever fills the adrenaline rush when boredom strikes
It's only when he wakes up to his forge being overran by dwarves that he finally heed the warning he was given
Spends most of his time at camp, hanging out with campers from Athena's cabin, being the one to check over the blueprints
Seeing if their ideas are plausible and actually work. It's no problem if they don't. Hell, Fundy prefers when they don't work the first time around as it means he's gets to tinker with their designs.
Doesn't make too many changes as most of the mistakes tend to be sleep deprived errors. Still he'll see what he can do to make 'em more efficient
Mainly listens to Jazzpunk while he works, stimming along; mouth pops, banging his wrench against the side of some metal scrap, tapping his foot
Otherwise the other half of the time is spent getting his ass kicked because he decided to taunt one of Ares' kids. Also picking out the most hotheaded one he can find.
Starts out with a simple prank which he blames on the Hermes kids who already hate him
Fundy makes all his failed pick-pocketing gadgets shiny to their sticky hands, usually blows up in their faces literally. Not badly enough that they have to go to the med unit but they do end up with explosions of soot and ash on their clothes
So as you'd expect, they rat him real quick and Fundy always forgets that said Ares' kid will just cut the tree he swiftly scrambled up down
Butchering some remark trying to compare Fundy's fox hybrid traits to the one Aesop's fable—the one about how the grapes are just out of reach and the fox eventually gives up
Which Fundy points out and that's what finally pushes them over the edge
It's during one of these tiffs that he meets his friend group, as another camper, Sam decides to intervene for once. The Ares' kid ends up with some injuries for once as they tried to act hard when really, they were shitting bricks when they saw Sam's gas mask mixed with being a centaur.
'You really don't know when to stop do you?' is the first he asks Fundy when it all ends and when Fundy just chuckles out a 'no,' Sam sighs. Sam doesn't truly know what about the kid makes him invite him to his table but he doesn't regret it.
‘Guys, Sammie’s picked up another stray.’ Tubbo’s remark makes the others look up, seeing their centaur friend walk over with a fox hybrid
‘And he’s not in Hermes’ cabin? Being a fox and all.’ Crumb flicks 5up’s head. ‘That’s like asking if you should be in Hestia’s cabin. Or that I should be in Artemis’ cabin.’
Their conversation ending as the duo sits down, ‘Guys, meet Fundy. Fundy, this is Tubbo, 5up, Crumb, & Ranboo.’
‘Enderman if you’re wondering.’ Ranboo gestures to his dual colored skin. ‘Oh, figured it’d be rude to ask.’
When they make charms for their necklaces, they make sure no one gets the one they made; Fundy gives his to Crumb, Crumb gives its to Ranboo, Ranboo gives theirs to Sam, Sam gives his to 5Up and 5up gives his to Fundy
Exchanging numbers so that they can still talk/bitch to one another when they leave camp and return to normie life

so like i have a leftover affinity for milk crates from my homeless>couch surfing>freight train>sober living days, and i've always wanted to collect and stack them so that every wall of a room is covered by milk crates full of books. still a life goal. here's my start, my newly organized milk crate bookshelf💥
my True Self is a jazzpunk librarian and im living that spicy untreated manic ocd life so the crates are categorized of course;
• music + art appreciation
• writing + music production
• recovery + spirituality
• spirituality pt. two
• coming of age punkish drug vibes
• ideas
• black thought
• my fiction favorites
• language + classic lit
• classic lit pt. two
• stephen king (a lot of which is currently loaned out to friends im just realizing)
• bible stuff
life isn't giving me a whole lot to smile about right now but an aesthetic bookshelf is one of them. ah<3
