At first it was just whenever he'd become nonverbal or didn't feel like he couldnt articulate his feelings, he'd just stare at her and give her just enough of his own feelings to get her to understand without affecting her negatively, but after they joined the Cullens, and the more they were around humans, it basically became second nature until he just started doing it subconsciously, all the time
