RIP Michael Jayston (29.10.1935 - 5.2.2024)
"Well, I played a lot of interesting people. I was Siegfried Sassoon in ‘Mad Jack’, and played Beethoven and Rochester in Jane Eyre amongst others. When I did Equus in 1976, a critic described my work on television as ‘odd bits of TV’, but these are no small parts for an actor."

Really loving all the Austen men polls. But I think we are in dire need of a battle of the Rochesters. And then the Darcy winner vs the Rochester winner. And then any Darcy vs any Rochester. And then just book Darcy vs book Rochester.
That'll ensure at least weeks of anxiety fun.
Special edition: wet shirt Darcy vs wet shirt Rochester!!!

Sorcha Cusack (Jane) and Michael Jayston (Mr. Rochester) from "Jane Eyre" 1973 version.
If you're a fan of "Jane Eyre", don't miss out watching this great adaptation. The production values may be dated but it's script uses a lot of dialogues from the novel. It's also has one of the best chemistry and dynamics between the main leads.

Perfect Jane Eyre adaptation would be 2006 Jane and Rochester, 1943 Adèle and 1983 St John, 1973 script (but perhaps with slightly fewer voiceovers...), and 1996 music.

I can't stop thinking about how that scene in ep. 5 of 1973 Jane Eyre was done where Rochester is wondering if Jane is real or if he's just dreaming, and Jane starts talking about how her uncle has died and left her some money and she's rich etc, and Rochester is all like "yea okay this is too boring to be a dream" 😂

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Michael Jayston. A brilliant actor with an illustrious career who so superbly originated the role of the Valeyard. He will be sorely missed.

Some newly discovered still photos of "Jane Eyre" 1973 version starring Sorcha Cusack and Michael Jayston from BBC Photo Archive website. Few of them were featured on the DVD version.
