𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Pairing: Jay Halstead x Fem!Reader.
• Requested by @hart-kinsella: Maybe him and mc are working undercover (but they're married in real life) and a guy tries too hard with her (takes her by the arm and invades her personal space as well as trying to flirt with her with words) and then Jay tells him that and punches him. They could be at a club like that one episode when he and Hailey (and Kevin, maybe? I don't remember exactly) were undercover - unfortunately I don't recall which season it was.
• Warnings: mention of drugs, violence.
• Word count: 1543.
• A/N: I know this is not my best work and I apologize 😭 but I managed to quickly write it so I can post something ❤️ and tell me why I stayed for half an hour staring at the wall to think about a title and I ended up with this one 😭 btw love you all and thank you always for your support
Tumblr media
It was no secret Jay sometimes hated undercover missions. Especially if you were involved.
He couldn’t help it. He knew you were an amazing cop, one of the best he ever worked with, capable of defending yourself in any circumstances but since you were also his wife, he couldn’t help but worry about you.
And this case was no different.
You and Jay were undercover due to a drug trafficking case, him as a potential buyer interested in purchasing the drugs, you as his work partner who had set up the connection with Joshua Ryder, the criminal suspected of being the gang’s leader.
Jay was on the verge of losing his mind, not being able to stay still and acting like nothing was happening.
You were both in a club, sitting in a VIP room while you talked with Ryder and convince him to make a deal with you. The rest of the team were instead in some fake company’s vans listening to your conversations in real time.
However, things started to go wrong when Jay noticed one of the traffickers approaching you in a way he didn’t like at all.
“Are you here to do business or watch her like a hawk?” the gang leader had insisted for the umpteenth time while for the umpteenth time Jay directed his gaze towards you who continued to giggle with fake enthusiasm with one of Ryder’s henchmen.
You were uncomfortable, as with any mission that involved getting close to another man other than your husband. You knew it was your job, that you had a duty to fulfill and your private life had to stay out of it but sometimes it wasn’t that easy.
“You sure you don’t want anything to drink, sugar?” Asked the man who insistently continued to hit on you. You didn’t even know his name – or care to know – but you smiled anyway with fake naivety, slightly shaking your head.
You quickly glanced at Jay who was sitting in front of you, noticing he was busy talking to Ryder, but his gaze met yours for a moment. It was brief but in that simple look you understood he too had noticed that guy’s insistence. Jay had his arms crossed over his chest, breathing heavy, his jaw clenched as he saw how this man insisted on getting closer to you.
He was disgusting, he smelled of alcohol from miles away, and you had to repress the urge to vomit and the instinct to punch his ugly face.
The man approached further, sliding on the sofa towards you and you moved back, trying to create further distance but without making it obvious and making him suspicious.
“You know, my boss is quite jealous of his employees, you shouldn’t be so close to me,” you falsely giggled but he didn’t seem to get the hint, in fact, it seemed to amuse him even more.
“We’re all one big family here darling, what’s mine is someone else’s and what’s someone else’s is mine…” He rested an arm on the back of the sofa behind your shoulders and although he hadn’t even touched you, you felt your skin crawl and the urgent need to throw yourself into an acid bath. “If you want to do business with us your boss will have to learn how to share… Especially with such a beautiful and gracious girl like you.”
The desire to kick him in the balls was intense and you wondered what kind of woman would really fall for these words.
Jay was on the verge of losing his mind.
He was trying.
He was really trying but it was so fucking hard to stay still and not react when that son of a bitch was being a creep with his wife. Ryder was talking to him about something he didn’t even care about, but he couldn’t pay attention and process a single word, too focused on you.
He couldn’t help but glance at you every now and then, running a hand on his jaw in frustration and starting to fidget on the spot as he saw the man getting closer and closer to you and invading your personal space, like touching your hair or caress your shoulder.
It wasn’t jealousy, he could never be jealous of a filthy man like him but he deeply hated not being able to do anything to keep you safe without ruining the whole mission. He hated seeing you so tense and uncomfortable although from the way your hands were balled into fists in your lap, he knew you too were itching to punch him.
He hated having to pretend you were simply his work partner and not his wife.
But he swore he saw red when that man’s clammy hand rested on your face and your eyes widened at the contact as your entire body froze in place.
Fuck the mission and these motherfuckers too.
Jay lost control.
That slimy hand on you had driven him crazy and before he knew it, he had stood up and grabbed the man’s hand with his, punching him in the face with all the strength in his body. He didn’t catch the gasp that escaped you and he didn’t even care he had just ruined any chance of doing ‘business’ with Ryder along with the possibility of framing him. While his fist hit that bastard again and again, all he could do was think of those hands on you.
“That’s my fucking wife you motherfucker!” Jay screamed in his face, holding him by the collar of his shirt as the man spat out blood, struggling to keep up with the fury of the undercover detective. “Let me catch you again putting a hand on her or even just looking her way, I’ll enjoy breaking your fingers one by one before throwing you in jail.”
Everything was now chaos.
The team, who in the meantime had witnessed everything through your hidden cameras, burst in when they realized the situation had now worsened to the point of no return. You tried to pull Jay away from the man, but it was totally useless, not when he was so furious that your strength was no match for his.
Ryder was fuming when he realized you were cops and you had tried to frame him, swearing he’d make you pay dearly while Kevin handcuffed him along with the rest of his goons.
“Baby,” you called back but Jay didn’t look at you right away. You stood outside the club under Voight’s orders, a hand on his bicep and caressing him as you tried to get his attention. You were alone in a little corner, waiting for your boss for his inevitable fury.
“You okay?” He asked, his voice low but finally focusing his gaze on you.
You let out a laugh trying to diffuse the tension, you hated seeing him so furious. “You are ask me if I’m okay? I’m not the one who just punched a guy.”
He sighed, tearing his eyes away from you as he ran his hands over his face with frustration. Your heart clenched at the sight of his red and bruised knuckles. “I wish I had killed him to be honest.”
“Jay I don’t want you to get hurt because of me,” you replied, taking his hands in yours and leaving a kiss on the back of them, smiling when you saw his hard features start to soften at the gesture. “I could’ve handled him, I wouldn’t have let him go any further.”
“I know you could baby, you’re amazing,” he softy spoke, tucking a strand of your hair behind your ear. He took a step towards you, closing the distance enough you had to slightly lift your head up to look into his eyes. “But there’s no way on earth that I would have sat there and watched while that son of a bitch put his hands on you.”
He cupped your face with his hands, his thumbs caressing your heated cheeks. “No one gets to put a hand on you, much less against your will. You’re my wife, I’m the only bastard who can touch you and I will gladly kill anyone who dares to do it instead of me, am I clear?”
You let out a breath, almost on the verge of passing out right there and now in his arms. “God baby I want to suck your dick so bad right now. I love when you get so protective of me, it’s so hot.”
Jay burst out laughing, his stomach clenching in anticipation knowing you would stand by your words. He pulled you into a hug and you rested your head on his chest as you wrapped your arms around him. “I’ll always keep you safe, I won’t let anyone touch a single hair of your head, I hope you know it. God knows I would set the city on fire to protect you.”
“I know baby, I love you so damn much it’s insane,” you deeply inhaled the smell of his cologne, leaving a kiss on his shirt coated chest. “But I hope it’s worth it because Voight is coming and I think he’s ready to take us both out,” you continued when you broke away from the hug and saw your boss coming up behind Jay, a furious look on his face.
“Oh yeah, it’ll always be worth it, especially for the amazing blowjob you’ll give me later.”

Request: I would love to see something Like IT’s Career day at school and Jay and Will come to teach about their jobs along with others. And Halstead's sister gets bullied. During the break of moving in between careers someone comes and beats her up in like the bathroom and leaves her there and no one notices her being gone untill the end of the day. (I kinda want like Fire, Med, and Pd to find her)
sorry if it doesn’t make much sense you can choose how to end it and stuff
I also LOVE your fics I can’t wait to see more❤️
Authors Note; Y’all really love the angst huh, gotta deliver,, and hopefully you enjoy this little drabble. Also, part of me really wanted to title this, 'big sister hugs' because I think that Hailey would be the best big sister and also give the best big sister advice.
warnings: private girls school (yes that's a warning), bullying, getting jumped (i guess?), hospital and injuries,, Jay and Will not knowing girl bullying and being stubborn, a very poorly written plot
Tumblr media
High school was not always easy, but you were comfortable at your school with your friends. That was until there was a security issue and Jay’s information got leaked. Your apartment, school, Jay’s license plate, everything that could be used to track him ended up in the hands of the ‘bad guys’. Jay and Will had broken the news to you that they were pulling you from your current school, and moving to another school closer to Will’s. A private girls school, the ones with the fancy uniforms and stuck-up kids who thought the law didn’t apply to them because they had money. You hated it. You had begged Jay and Will to let you stay, but there was no changing their mind.
The first week was hell, you knew no one. Starting in the middle of the year meant that everyone knew you were the new girl. You were enrolled under your mother's maiden name, for extra safety. It was weird not hearing your name followed by ‘Halstead’. After the first week was gone, you decided to stick it out until the problem with Jay blew over, by then, you could probably convince them to let you go back to your other school. Three weeks passed by and intelligence solved Jay’s leak.
“So,” You began on Sunday family dinner, “Now that the whole leak in PD is over…”
Jay and Will shared a look from across the table.
You narrowed your eyes, “What?”
Will ran a hand down his face, “Listen…”
“You won't let me go back.”
“It’s a better school-”
“Better?” You spat, “How is it better? I hate it there!”
“It’ll get better,” Jay said, “You just need more time to adjust.”
“I don’t want to adjust-”
“We’re not pulling you out,” Jay said, “I know you're struggling right now, but you’ll make some friends and-”
“I can’t believe you.” You pulled away from the table, leaving your half-eaten dinner where it was and stomping off to your room. Jay stood to follow, ready to scold you for storming away and having such an attitude.
“Jay,” Hailey grabbed his arm, “Let her cool down.”
Tumblr media
Jay and Will didn’t budge on your school. You had gone from begging to bargaining with no success. Now you were giving them both the silent treatment. You knew it was immature and frankly ridiculous, but you were too mad to think clearly. Jay had already scolded you for not talking to him for the last week. You had ignored him.
Hailey was the only one you spoke too, because it wasn’t her fault that Jay was being stubborn. Even so, you didn’t tell her everything when she stopped by your room. Namely, the career day that was coming up. You knew telling her meant she would tell Jay. And Jay and Will had a terrible habit of embarrassing you at school. At your last school's career day, Will and Jay had come and talked for hours about their funniest stories. You knew if they came this time, your peers wouldn’t be as amused.
When career day did roll around, your dean stood in front of the school in the auditorium, introducing students and their parents. Your school was much smaller than your last one - something about smaller class sizes being better for learning - so the auditorium wasn’t fully packed.
Not everyone brought their parents, but the popular kids with parents who had good jobs came. Like the group of girls who hated you, who all brought at least one parent. Your dean invited students to the stage by class and then had the student introduce their parents. Your class was last, the biggest number of parents who had come. You were sat at the end of your class, mostly because you didn't have anyone to bring. Not that it bothered you.
“Next up, we have Olivia and her mom, Jen.”
Jen was a dentist, she spent 10 minutes explaining how her job worked and then opened for questions. There weren’t many, mostly a few questions from seniors about collages and other stuff.
Then it was Sophie, with her dad the Banker.
By the time the girls who hated you were called up, you were ready to fall asleep. No one here had an interesting job, most of the jobs were boring well playing jobs that you could never see yourself doing.
The main girl who didn’t like you was Madison. She wasn’t fond of how the teachers asked you for answers in class, not that you could do anything about that. Her friend group was made up of 5 or 6 girls who were seemingly lovely. All smiles and compliments around teachers but spread vicious rumors and lies when adults couldn’t hear. You had heard them speaking about you a few times, not that you cared. It wasn’t great to be the new girl with all the rumors, but you had banked on leaving the school before for long. Which, you knew now, wasn’t an option. So now you were stuck with the girls who all hated you for rumors or lies that you didn’t even know.
Madison brought her mum and dad with her, real estate agents who worked together selling multi-billion dollar houses. The whole time she had a smug look on her face. When she sat back down in her row, she turned in her seat, looking back at you.
“Didn’t bring anyone?” She asked.
You didn’t bother replying.
“Is it because your parents are coke addicts?” Her friend beside her pressed.
How that rumor even started you didn’t know, it was so absurd.
“Or is it because they’re dead?” Madison pressed.
You gave her a bored look, “I’ll take my family over your fraud family any day.”
Madison opened her mouth to bark something back, but was shushed by your teacher. She turned back to face the front, arms crossed over her chest. No doubt stewing in your words.
“We now have some guests to speak to you,” The Dean said through the microphone, “We reached out to some of our first responders and invited them to come speak to you too. Everyone please welcome Dr Asher and Dr Halstead from Gaffney Chicago Med.”
Will and Hannah walked to the stage, both in their Med scrubs with doctors coats on. Will was looking for you, you could tell from the way his eyes scanned the faces in the audience. You slumped in your chair, avoiding looking at him at all.
How did he find out? Did he and Jay find out somehow? Did your school contact them?
You really wanted to disappear now, your face was no doubt bright red by how much it was burning. You prayed silently that Will hadn’t told Jay, but you knew it was a useless prayer. If Will was here Jay would be too.
You got your answer when the dean explained that there were more guests outside on the fields. She ordered everyone to head that way, ushering students with promises of something ‘exciting’.
Outside, firehouse 51 had parked their rigs on the grass. 51 had their ladder extended, Mouch standing at the controls grinning like a champion. Not far from Mouch was Trudy, flanked by two patrol cars and their officers. Looking across the gathered first responders it didn’t take long to spot Jay and Intelligence. Their own cars were parked on the grass, the lights on. Everyone but Voight had their vests on, adding to the dramatic atmosphere already created.
Students huddled around, entranced by the cars and rigs which you had seen plenty of times. You tried to hide towards the back, but Kelly had spotted you and tried to usher you closer. You shrugged back at him, trying to make it look like you were stuck within the crowd.
“Firstly, we would like to thank Sergeant Trudy Platt and Sergeant Hank Voight, as well as Chief Wallace Boden for coming today. We are hugely appreciative to hear from you,” The dean spoke into a microphone, “Secondly, I want to ask students to be respectful, as these hard working men and women have taken time out of their busy days to come and speak to us. So we are going to listen and show respect. There will be time for questions and demonstrations at the end. Please Welcome Sergeant Trudy Platt.”
The crowd clapped as Trudy took the mic, but it wasn’t too enthusiastic. Trudy gave a similar speech to last year. Along the lines of what made district 21 special, intelligence and the hardworking patrol officers. She talked about fake calls and how breaking the law would wind you up in her cells etc. It was funny, a few quips earning laughs from teachers and parents. But you had heard it all before. You were dreading what the others would say. You didn’t want everyone knowing your brother was a cop, that would cause way too many issues.
So instead, you slipped away from the crowd, heading back towards the school building to hide in the bathroom.
You didn’t think anyone would notice, most people were paying attention to the speakers or interested in the rigs. You were wrong, of course, being followed almost immediately by Madison and a couple of her friends.
You got to the lockers before they announced themselves.
“What did you mean my parents were frauds, bitch?”
You turned around in fright, not even hearing them sneak up on you.
“I didn’t mean it,” You replied, “I’m sorry.”
You were, kind of. Mostly you were sorry that you had said it, because she genuinely seemed shocked. But this was Chicago, anyone with any money committed fraud, it was kind of the standard.
“I don’t care if you're sorry,” Madison snarled, she was taller than you so when she stepped closer you couldn’t help feeling intimidated. “What did you mean?”
“Madison-”
One of her friends pushed you hard against the lockers with a forearm over your collar, “Answer the question.”
You were by no means a confrontational person. Growing up, Jay always tried to teach you to talk out your issues, violence or fighting wasn’t a good solution. Will was the same, although both of them weren’t always the best at doing as they counseled.
“I just meant that,” You were panicking under the glare of all three girls, “You know, this is chicago and-”
“And what? Everyone is a criminal like your addict parents?” Madison got in your face again.
“My parents weren’t addicts,” You scoffed, now annoyed that she wouldn’t let that go.
“No?” The girl who was holding you back moved her arm further up your neck, pressing against your throat, “Then where are they?”
“If my parents were addicts, would you really think I'd be in a private school?” You pressed, “Use your brain for once, please.”
You should have known that would piss Madison off. She let out an annoyed scoff then pulled back her fist and punched your square in the nose. The force slammed your head back into the lockers, the sound echoing through the empty halls. The punch wasn’t hard enough to break your nose, but you would feel the blood start to drip down your lip. Madison shook her hand like she had taken more damage than you had.
“Want to say that again?” The third girl finally spoke up.
It was like they were all gaining confidence in the security of the three of them. When one of them said something the others would laugh and smirk.
“I don’t like bullies, you know,” Madison said.
God, the irony.
This time the punch came from the third girl, landing in your stomach. You didn't know her name, but she was on the volleyball team, so her punch was much stronger. Your body doubled over, arms crossing over your stomach as your lungs tried to fight your diaphragm for air. The arm holding you up was dropped, and your body fell to the ground as you tried to force yourself to take some deep breaths.
“This is what you deserve,” A girl said, before another blow landed on your ribs. The wind was knocked out of you again, causing you to cough and choke.
Madison crouched down to your level, “Bullies like you deserve to be put in their place.”
You didn’t have time to appreciate the irony this time, because she was kicking your head, hard.
Your body reacted on instinct, curling into itself to try to protect you from another blow that was sure to come.
“Hey!”
The three girls sprinted at the voice, running away from their actions.
“Hey, kid,” A hand on your shoulder made you flinch, when your vision cleared you realized it was just Kelly. He held his hands out to show you he meant no harm, then gently helped you sit up.
“You’re alright,” He said softly, steading you sitting against the lockers. You couldn’t even reply, focused solely on breathing through the pain in your head and side.
“I found her,” Kelly said into his radio, “North Hallway, bring a jump bag.”
Kelly gently touched the side of your face, tilting your head to look at the side you had been kicked.
“You still got that med kit in your bag?” He asked, knowing Kidd had taught you that in girls on fire.
“Yeah,” You said softly, your voice above a whisper.
Kelly ripped open your bag, rummaging through it until he found the small first aid kit. He was only after gauze, once he secured it, he ripped the package open and pressed the gauze to your head.
You winced, instinctively pulling away from him.
“I know,” He said, sitting down next to you so he could hold the gauze in place, “Sorry kid.
You both looked up as the sound of footsteps came running towards you. You might as well have been on fire, the entire house was rushing towards you. Jay and Intelligence were there too, Will and Asher running along beside everyone.
“This is overkill,” You said to no one in particular.
Kelly chuckled, shuffling so that Will could take his place next to you, “We’re all here for you, kid.”
Will replaced Kelly’s hand with his own, when Kelly pulled away you could see blood on his hand.
Jay croached on your other side, letting Will, Hannah and Brett take care of you.
“What happened?” He asked, looking over your bloody nose, head injury and the way you were holding your side.
You didn’t want to be known as a snitch, one glance behind your brother and you could see students being held back by teachers and 51. The school day was almost over, everyone would be gathering their things to leave. You hoped you weren’t in front of someone's locker who hated you, this would definitely make them hate you more.
You looked back at Jay, his eyes filled with worry, “What happened, squirt?”
“I, uh.. I fell.”
Will scoffed, “You fell?”
“Yeah, I’m clumsy,” You said.
“You fell and hit your nose and the side of your head?” Hannah asked, voice soft, “Are you sure that's the story you want to tell?”
Over her shoulder, Kelly was talking to Voight and Hailey. Hailey was pointing something out, a camera that was positioned above one of the classroom doors.
“Yeah,” You didn’t sound confident at all. But right now, you wanted to be anywhere but here.
Jay looked pissed, but he didn’t say anything. He got to his feet and stood out of the way as Hannah and Will helped you stand. They lead you over to the stair chair, despite your very vocal argument that you were fine.
Being wheeled through the crowd of students and their parents was the most embarrassing thing you had ever experienced. You passed by Madison at one point, who was leaning against her locker talking to her parents like nothing ever happened. You avoided looking her way, instead focusing on what Brett was saying about getting to the rig.
Outside the building things were less stressful and crowded. You managed to convince the four hovering adults that you could stand on your own to get into the back of the ambulance, even if you didn’t really think you needed one.
“I’m really fine,” You argued for probably the fifth time, “I think you're overreacting.”
Will sighed, running a hand down his face, “You are too stubborn for your own good,” He muttered.
Violet chuckled, “Just lay back, alright? You aren’t getting out of this, no matter how much you complain.”
She was right, but that didn’t stop you from pouting the whole way to Med.
At Med, Will hovered as Hannah stapled the laceration on your head. You weren’t too happy about the idea of being stabled back together, but Will had taken a photo of the laceration to prove you needed it.
“That’s so gross,” You said, pushing the phone away from you.
“That’s why you need staples,” Will explained, rolling his eyes.
Not long after Hannah had treated you and left you to rest, Jay, Hailey and Voight walked in.
“Are you doing alright?” Jay asked, hesitant to start another argument.
“I’m fine,” You repeated, “I don’t know why everyones making such a big deal.”
“You were attacked at-”
“I fell.” You interrupted.
“Y/N-”
“Jay.” You echoed in the same tone.
Jay's face flashed with irritation, he looked to Will for help.
“We know that’s not true,” Will said, giving you his best parental disappointed look.
“The whole thing was caught by the security cameras,” Hailey spoke softly, she was the only person in the room who knew what it was like to be a teenage girl in high school, “We just want to know what they said.”
You tried to come up with some kind of explanation that wouldn’t get anyone in trouble, but you came up short.
“It’s not that big of a deal,” You shrugged, avoiding eye contact with all of them.
Will leaned forward, he looked wary, “Listen, squirt, we want to help, but we can’t unless you tell us the truth.”
“That is the truth,” You argued back, crossing your arms definitely, “It’s not a big deal.”
“You’re in the hospital!” Jay gestured around, “What about this is ‘not a big deal’.”
You scowled, refusing to say anything else and just sitting silently.
Voight squeezed Jay's shoulder, “We’ll let her rest, come back later?”
Jay nodded, not bidding you goodbye as he stomped out of the room. You hadn’t seen him this mad in forever, you weren’t sure if this would blow over as easily as your other fights. Voight followed after Jay, he told you to get some rest then followed his detective to try to calm him down.
Will got up to leave too, he told you to rest and said he would come back soon. When the three left, it was only Hailey who stayed behind.
“I know you’ve been struggling at school,” She took a seat on the bed next to you, “I know what that’s like.”
You fiddled with your fingers, not wanting to admit she was right.
“You know what happened today wasn’t right,” Hailey continued, “Jay wants to press charges.”
“What? No! That’ll just make it wor…” You stopped yourself.
“Make what worse?” Hailey pressed.
You took a deep breath, trying not to get upset.
“Whatever is going on, I can help,” Hailey promised.
“You can’t get me out of that school,” You scowled.
“I think after today, that might be possible.”
You leaned back into the pillows. Dr Asher had given you some pain meds for your head, they removed the sharp pain and replaced it with a dull throb. You could feel it more as you got more upset.
“There’s this stupid rumor that my parents are addicts,” you explained, “Madison is always taunting me with it, saying that's why no one ever comes to parent evenings or teacher interviews…”
Hailey didn’t say anything, she just sat listening patiently.
“Before you guys came, she asked why my parents weren’t here and I said that I would rather have my family over her fraud one.”
Hailey nodded as she listened.
“It was stupid and as soon as I said it, I regretted it. When we were outside I went inside to go to the bathroom and Madison and her friends followed me… They, uh… Madison wanted to know why I said it and I apologized but she didn’t- she, she didn’t care and…”
Hailey got the cue, “Okay. It’s alright.” She pulled you into a gentle hug. “Everything’s going to be alright.”

Away from you pt. 3
Tumblr media
pairing: jay halstead x reader
summary: Jay found you in your old apartment, packing all your belongings
Warning: None
A/N: well, i guess i have to write also part 4 now, stay tuned!
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
Previous part Next Part
One month passed after you left Chicago and Jay never gave up on you. Every single day, he tried to track your phone with Mouse, he tried to call you, hoping for your answer, and he used his power as a detective of the intelligence to find out if you used one of your credit cards somewhere.
For a month, Jay went home with the hope of finding you there, of discovering that you choose to give him another chance and every day he found himself alone in the house, with all your belongings still there. Sometimes he took out one of your t-shirts to feel your smell again and he discovered that he missed every single part of you. He missed the way you always prepared coffee for him too before leaving for work, he missed hearing your voice, he missed seeing your smile, he missed hugging you and cuddling with you on the bed before going to sleep, he missed your messages during the shift, and he missed searching for you at the Chicago Med every single time he went there for work.
He missed everything of you.
He missed you.
That day, Jay got home earlier after being shot on the job and he wasn’t prepared at all to find suitcases in the Hallway. He looked around and he spotted your ring, the one he gave to you and the one that was his mom’s before, on the kitchen counter, with a note nearby.
He walked towards it, and he lift the note to read it; there were only few words on it.
“Maybe you should give it to Hailey.”
Jay felt his heart skipping a beat, then he looked up when he heard something coming from the bedroom; he silently walked towards it, still shocked by the fact that you were there, you finally came home, and he finally had the chance to talk to you after weeks of silence. He thought he lost you forever and having the opportunity to talk to you was something he dreamed of for four weeks.
When he entered the bedroom, you were trying to grabbed a box that was high in the wardrobe, too high for you to reach for it. You gave up and turned around to grabbed a chair, but you stopped when you finally saw Jay in front of you, few meters away. He was still at the door frame, looking at you like he was actually looking at a ghost; he was skinnier than you remembered, and he looked like he didn’t sleep well for weeks.
You, on the other hand, looked beautiful as always. You were skinnier too but, besides that, you looked good.
“Y/n…” Jay was the first one to talk, whispering your name and looking at how your body reacted to his voice; you shivered at your name being said by him, the love of your life.
Even if you tried hard to forget him, Jay was still the love of your life and you couldn’t forget him or prevented you from reacting this way, especially when he was in front of you, as good as always. He was skinnier and he looked tired, but he was still beautiful to your eyes, even after what he did to you, even after seeing him having sex with someone else. You wanted to scream at him, you wanted to slap him in the face, and you wanted to go out of the apartment as soon as you could, but you were frozen and it looked like you couldn’t move or talk at all.
Minutes passed and there was silence between you two, then, finally, you found your voice again. “You should have been at work…” You said, gulping. “Will said you would have been at work and that the apartment would have been empty…”
Jay finally found the courage to make a small step towards you and, when he saw that you stayed where you were, he made another one, stopping right in front of you.
“I got shot on the job…” he said, lifting his shirt to show her a bandage around his abdomen. “I got shot and they sent me home to rest…”
Even after what he did to you, you couldn’t help but being worried for him; you made a step forward and you placed a hand on his abdomen, worried as hell. “W-What? Did you go to the hospital?”
Jay shivered, feeling your hand on his body. God, how he missed your touch.
“It wasn’t necessary… It’s nothing to be worried about, Sylvie looked at it on the ambulance and said that everything should have been good.”
“What? Didn’t you go to the hospital for a full check-up? Are you crazy?!” You exclaimed, pushing him on the bed and looking at him from above. “Take off your shirt, I’m going to check on you.”
You would have preferred to leave him and leave your apartment immediately, but you just couldn’t leave him there without being sure that everything was okay; you lift your sleeves and you took out the first-aid kit.
Jay tried to repress a smile, but he wasn’t able to. He looked at you, happy to see that you were still worried about him, happy to see that you actually cared about him still, even after what he did to you. Besides, having you trying to help him with the wound would have been an excellent excuse to talk to you before you left forever, because he knew that if you would have left that apartment, it would have been for forever.
He couldn’t let you do it, he couldn’t let you leave, not if he didn’t have the chance to explain everything to you.
“As you command…” He whispered, biting his lips and finally taking off his shirt. The bandage Sylvie put on him had a blood stain on the left side of his abdomen, where he was probably hit. Jay moaned in pain when you cut off the bandage, kneeling in front of him to have a better view and placing both your hand at the side of the wound. It still hurt, but nothing he wouldn’t have been able to handle.
“It went through…” You whispered, looking at the wound carefully. “Didn’t Sylvie talked about putting some stitches?”
“Yeah, maybe…” He whispered. “ She said that she recommended them, but I needed to go to the hospital, and I didn’t want to hear Will talking about how reckless I am on the job…”
“Well, Will’s got a point.” You said, shaking your head and grabbing all you needed to put some stiches. “You’re lucky I have everything I need here with me.”
“I’m lucky I fell in love with a doctor…” He corrected you.
Jay knew that he went too far when he saw your face; he wanted to apologize but he was interrupted by a moan of pain when you started to put stitches on him, not in the painless way possible. You had put stitches on him before and he perfectly knew that you were better than that, but he didn’t complain about it, after all he deserved to be punished for what he did to you, he deserved to feel some pain after how he treated you, after how you must have felt.
“Do not say it again.” You said, without looking at him once. “You have no rights to tell me that after what you did to me.”
You stayed focused on what you had to do, trying to not think about him having sex with Hailey, an image that followed you in New York and that persecuted you every time you slept. You remembered him on top of her every night and every night you heard him saying that he loved her again and again.
“I’m sorry…” He whispered looking at you and smiling when he saw you biting your bottom lip something you always do when you’re focused on something. “I wanted to talk to you and explain everything to you, but I couldn’t call you… I couldn’t find where you were.”
“Because I didn’t want to be found.” You spoke. “And I don’t want to hear anything from you; there’s nothing to explain. You slept with her for God knows how long.”
“That night was the first and the last one.” He immediately said.
“Liar.” You whispered, shaking your head and being rude with the next stich; you heard him moan in pain again, but you didn’t care. You were helping him even after what you did, and he still had the courage to lie to you? you couldn’t accept it. “Kim told me that you left work at 8 pm for weeks and I thought that you stayed at work trying to have a promotion while you were actually sleeping with your partner!”
“It’s true that I lied to you for weeks, but I never slept with Hailey before that night; we used to talk, just talk.” He replied, shaking his head and grabbing your chin gently, trying to look at you in the eyes.
“Do you really think I’m this stupid, Jay?” You spoke, shaking your head and trying to lower your gaze on the wound again. “And leave me, I need to look at the wound if you want to heal properly.”
Jay let go of your chin, sighing heavily and trying to think about what to say. How could he explain you what was happening in his head? How could he explain you for what reason he did what he did?
“I don’t think you’re stupid, y/n…” He whispered softly, looking at you when you finished putting stitches at him. “It’s true that we only talked for few weeks, I didn’t want to cheat on you, I didn’t plan it. I’m sorry, I really am because you don’t deserve this, you don’t deserve to suffer like you do, but you need to know what happened, so please listen to me…”
You didn’t want to listen to him, you didn't want to pay any attention to his words, you wanted to leave and you wanted to come back to New York City and forget about everything that happened here in Chicago, but you couldn’t leave without having a proper explanation. You spent weeks wondering with you had done wrong that brought him to cheat on you.
“Talk…” You spoke, while putting back the first-aid kid. “You have five minutes.”
“Working in the Intelligence is not easy as I want everyone to think… what you see on the streets…” He said, sadly. “I needed to talk about it, but I didn’t want to put all of this on you; I didn’t want to add my problems to yours, especially since I know that working at Chicago Med it’s not easy at all. I didn’t want to add all the problems of my job on you, I needed someone to talk and Hailey was there: she worked with me, she was my partner and she saw everything that I saw. I could talk about job with her and I could explain everything that came to my mind, but I never, never actually thought about cheating on you.” He said, looking at you in the eyes and placing a hand on your cheeks.
“Then why did you sleep with her? Why did you tell her that you loved her?” You whispered, not understanding why he slept with her if that was the truth.
“She kissed me and after that I don’t actually know what happened, it happened to fast. I know that I messed up everything and I have no excuses. That night I was with her because I tried to help a little girl that was kidnapped, but she was shot in front of me and she died in my arms. I was too shocked, it was too much, especially when I had to tell her parents that I couldn’t have save her.” He said, looking down at the floor. “When I told her that I loved her, I was actually thinking about you and, when we finished I… I couldn’t look at her… I came home and I was actually thinking about telling you everything the next morning, but you weren’t there. I was so worried that something bad happened to you that I was out of my mind.”
You listened to him carefully, then you got up and you cover your face behind your hands, confused. What was you supposed to do? Why didn’t he talk to you? Why did he choose Hailey over you? Was it real that he just talked to her for weeks? Was it real that he cheated on you just that night?
You didn’t know what to think, nor what to do, you just kept walking around the room, again and again.
“y/n…” He whispered softly, getting up and walking towards you. He wrapped his arms around your body and he hugged you gently. “I’m so sorry… please, tell me what I can do to gain your trust again. I still love you, y/n, and I can’t lose you. give me another chance and I will show you that I deserved it. Please.”
“I don’t know, jay… i… I don’t know!” You replied. “Let… let me think about it, okay?”
“Yes!” He said, smiling. “Yes, of course.”
Maybe there was still hope for them.
Maybe not everything was lost.
Maybe he could still repair everything.
Maybe he didn’t lose you, after all.

CPD Gala
Tumblr media
*GIF NOT MINE, full credit to the owner*
Requested?: Nope! Wanted to get something posted now I'm back :)
• Warnings: N/A
• Summary: Jay reminds you of the annual CPD gala but knows it's not your idea of fun
Words: 1,321
• A/N : I’m not gonna apologise again for being gone as god knows how many of these I post with that intro but I’m hoping to be back in the swing of things as I have a tonne of requests to get through and I don’t want anyone thinking their request is being ignored as I promise it isn’t!
Meh I don’t love it as I defo need to get back into the comforts of my writing (its gone so downhill lmao) but here we are..
Hope you enjoy🥰
****
Jay knew you weren’t the biggest fan of social occasions, so when you happily agreed to attend the annual CPD gala he had invited you along to, he was beyond surprised.
“I mean, I’ll ask her but don’t get your hopes up” he had joked with Kim a few days prior, following endless begging from her after finding out Hailey wouldn’t be there and wanting a familiar female face there.
“Tell her I’ll by her drinks all night” she quickly exclaims as Jay chuckles, eyes still firmly on the road as they drive back to the district.
“You do realise it’s a free bar?”
“Oh” she huffs, “more reason for her not to say no then” she happily shrugs, sinking back into her seat with a look of confidence.
As much as Jay could go on for hours about how he knew you better than anyone, least of all Kim who you had only met on a few occasions it was like talking to a brick wall sometimes and he didn’t have the patience.
You and Jay were homebodies and this suited you perfectly, he would come home after long shifts and you would still more than likely be sat in the same spot he left you at that morning. Countless half empty mugs filled with coffee that was now ice cold, papers scattered all over the table and floor with your eyes pinned firmly on the screen in front of you.
He would convince you to call it a night, you’d either order in food or you’d wander into the kitchen together to whip up dinner whilst he told you about his day. Depends on what you had, you’d either quickly tidy up the table as best you could or you both just slumped on the sofa with the pizza box balanced on your laps as you watched some trash TV.
You would always fall asleep before Jay, he would get too into the show you had put on and then couldn’t finish until he had got to the end whereas you probably wasn’t paying too much attention in the first place so would easily doze off to only be awoken with a light kiss to your head when Jay has turned the TV off.
It worked like clockwork, some may say boring but it just worked for you and you couldn’t picture it any other way. You were each others comfort, the feeling of home.
***
Jay had bought up the idea of going with him to the gala the previous year but you had only been dating for a few months and hasn’t told many people so you decided against it in mutual agreement.
The truth was it hadn’t left you mind since that exact day he casually asked you over dinner last year
“would be fun you know? “ he raised his eyebrows as he took a sip from his drink “having you on my arm all nice and dressed up” he teased
No Jay, it wouldn’t be fun.
Social outings weren’t your thing, you had a close family and the relationship you had with Jay and that was more than enough. An evening spent in Molly’s was something you had to build yourself up to, let alone a huge party with tonnes of people you had never met before.
Every week the thought would re-enter your mind on whether or not he would ask again this year, secretly hoping he would’ve forgot or they had a case on which meant they couldn’t go. You knew it was in August as Kim had mentioned it one night at Molly’s so as the month got closer, the more it played on your mind.
You even forced yourself one weekend to go dress shopping for the occasion to try and get yourself in the right mindset of being there to support Jay, after all you were beyond honoured he would want you by his side but sometimes the voice in your head would have a way of getting through.
“You know the CPD gala is this weekend?” Jay broke the silence, still chewing on his pizza as he flicked through the channels.
Shit
“I know it’s not your thing so I’m thinking of just third wheeling Kim and Adam, do you think they’ll mind?” he joked but you could tell there was something in his voice that had a twinge of disappointment.
“I’ll come with you”
Before you could register your voice to your brain, the words came out of your mouth.
“Baby, you do-“ he began but you were quick to cut him off in reassurance, placing a finger onto his lips as you smiled
“It doesn’t matter, you want me to be there so I’ll be there”
You placed a light kiss to his lips, the confusion plastered across his face but the light behind his eyes showing through in a gleam.
“Just promise me you will think about it first, don’t do this for me. You know I’d rather stay at home with you anyway but there isn’t many of us going to Voight wants us to make our presence known bla bla bla”
“I’ve already bought a dress” you lied, knowing it would be the thing to distract him
The chewing on his mouthful slowed, scanning your face with a slight narrow to his eyes as he tilted his head “what does it look like?”
“It’s just a little black dress, that alright with you?” you suggested, playful tone as he pouted his lips and nodded with a sign of approval “how comes I haven’t seen this dress?”
You lifted the pizza box from his lap whilst you began to tidy, scanning down to see him lift his hips to get more comfortable, slinging one arm to rest on the top of his head whilst the other clutched at the bottle of beer.
The gaze that was piercing into your back felt like it could burn a hole, the extra swing in your hips and swish of your ponytail was giving you the confidence you needed.
Placing the pizza box down on the side you turned to see Jay towering over you, one arm resting against the door frame with the other resting low in his sweatpant pocket.
“Seriously, let me see this dress”
You tried to keep your composure, acting like you couldn’t see the smile he was trying to hide despite the corners of his lips already turning up with his every word.
His eyes were pinned to you as you picked off a piece off fluff from his tshirt, following each move as you let your hand rest onto his chest.
Gazing up at him, innocence in your eyes as you could feel his heart pounding beneath your touch amongst the silence.
“You’re not allowed to see it until the Gala”
He huffed, rolling his eyes whilst running a hand across his forehead in stress
“but the guy in the store said I looked like a million bucks”
His eyes widened, smirk spreading across his lips as you felt his hand drop to your hip as he cleared his throat “did he now?”
You nodded, feeling his grip tighten as he let out a huff in laughter which you knew he didn’t mean in amusement.
Before you could think of what to come back with, his arm was slung over your waist, picking you up like you were a piece of paper and tossing you onto his shoulder. Marching towards the bedroom, not letting the fists you were prodding into his back stopping him.
“Jay?! What are you doing!” you exclaimed, being laid on the bed as he pinned his arms either side of your head to stop you from getting away from him. Dark glint in his eyes as he roamed about your body, taking in every inch as he admired.
“I think you need to show me this dress baby”

Dating Gloria Pritchett would include
Sfw and nsfw headcannons (no one asked for this but I’m in love with Gloria so)
Tumblr media
Shopping days together! She loves spoiling her princessa! You both love to buy clothes for each other as well
As y’all know I’m a bottom so…I definitely envision Gloria as a top in and outside the bedroom. You could be a stay at home step mom to Manny if you want to or you could get a job either way you know she’s in charge
You guys hang out with Cam and Mitch a lot because gays get along with gays
Going to fancy restaurants in LA for date nights
She loves to make you smile all the time she thinks it’s the cutest thing so she’ll purposely say and do things that make you laugh
I feel like y’all would love to go to theme parks together. Like Disneyland, Universal, SeaWorld, Knotts, etc.
As I said above you are technically Manny’s step mom and he loves you! The two of you get along great! Gloria is happy that he’s very accepting about your guys’ relationship
In my AU Gloria and Jay separated BUT they’re still very good friends and you guys are still considered part of the family
She met you at a yoga class because she was thinking of trying yoga and mindfulness activities and you happened to be in the class
She was struck by your beauty and the way you did each pose so perfectly. And the fact you were flexible she totally didn’t think anything inappropriate or anything
Hailey likes to hang out with you guys and stay over for girls sleepover nights. Sometimes Alex joins too but she’s much too interested in her studies. The three of you do makeup and watch chick flicks while you gossip
Gloria’s love language is gift giving and physical touch. She’s always holding your hand or has her arm around your shoulders. She also loves to spoil you with gifts even if they’re small
Nsfw
You definitely call her mommy
She likes to use her fingers but she also likes to use her strap as well
She loves when you eat her out while she sits in a chair all powerful looking
One of the gifts she gives you a lot is lingerie because she loves seeing you in different materials and colors she thinks it’s so pretty
She wears lingerie for you, too. Sometimes you guys match
Sometimes she teases you in public and waits till you guys get home to do anything about it
But sometimes you tease her too. To the point where she’ll drag you to the nearest bathroom and have her way with you
Gloria speaks her native language during sex sometimes and it’s really hot
Speaking of teasing, she loves to edge you with a vibrator it’s her favorite thing especially if you’re being a brat
And of course, if you don’t want to do anything then let her know she takes no for an answer (like most people should)

Glasses (A Halstead Brothers + Halstead Sister Imagine)
A/N: Thank you so much for reading and for sticking around with my sporadic posting! Please don't forget to vote and comment!
I start my second year of my doctoral program next week and have been working 60 hrs/wk these past few weeks to save up for when I have less time during the school year. I don't know when I will post next, but I have an idea that I want to write and I've also been trying to write 300 words/day, which is very helpful in getting writing done.
Anyway, sorry for the long author's note! Enjoy!
"You gonna go see my teacher now?" you asked after you and Jay walked into your elementary school one spring evening.
"Yup," Jay answered while he led you over to the small table set up right outside the room. It was stocked with coloring pages, markers, crayons, and a couple of books. "And you're going to sit right here while I talk to her, okay? I'll be right inside."
"And then we get ice cream after?"
"What was our deal?"
You sighed. "If I get a good re- re--" you scrunched up your eyebrows as you tried to remember the grown-up word that Jay had used earlier. "What's that word?"
"Report."
"Oh, yeah! If I get a good report, then I get ice cream."
"That's right."
"Mr. Halstead?" your teacher said as she stepped out of your classroom.
"Hi, Miss H!" You waved. "Please tell Jay I was good because I get ice cream then!"
Jay chuckled. "You'll just have to wait and see, kiddo. Now, be good while I talk to Miss H, okay?"
"Okay!" Then, you started flipping through the coloring pages to try and find one that you wanted to color.
***
"So, tell me the truth, is she a troublemaker?" Jay asked as he sat down across from your teacher. "I know for a fact me and my brother were, so it wouldn't surprise me."
You teacher smiled. "Y/N is anything but that. She does her work as assigned, gets her planner signed at night, and stays on task very well. She struggles with math, but that's understandable. Some take longer to learn math than others. But, she excels at reading. She said that you read with her and do flashcards with her every night."
Jay nodded. "We're working through The Chronicles of Narnia right now. Me, my wife, Hailey, or my brother, Will, will read that to her before she goes to bed, depending on who's with her due to our schedules. Then, the next night, we'll have her try and read to us. She's working on Junie B. Jones."
"Well, it's working. And, she's making more progress in her mad minutes for math than she was a month ago. Do you work on flashcards every day?"
"We try to," Jay answered. "Those we try to do right after school and give her a snack with it. Some would call it bribery, but it works."
"Keep doing what you're doing. It's been working really well." She paused. "There is one thing that has been concerning me about, Y/N." Jay furrowed his eyebrows as he continued to listen. "When we move seats for groups during partner reading and other times during the day, I noticed that she struggles to read what's on the board. Sometimes she'll squint really hard and sometimes she'll walk up to the board to write in her planner at the end of the day. I've moved her to the front row for class, but when we move for groups and she's further away from the board, it seems that it's hard for her to see. Do you have the time and money to get her eyes checked? If not, we have vision testing coming to school in a month, which is free and required for all students," your teacher finished.
"My brother's a doctor, and we'll make sure to see her pediatrician about this. It's getting close to her yearly physical anyway. Thank you for telling me. Is there any other times that you notice this?"
"During library days, she always makes sure to sit in the front so she can she the pictures better. I'm sorry. I wish I had more information to give you."
"No, thank you for telling me this. I know you have a lot of other kids to look out for. Is there anything else I should know? Behavior wise, she's good, right?"
"Very well behaved. The only thing I was concerned about is her vision."
"Great. Thank you again for telling me."
"You're welcome. Is there anything else you needed to discuss regarding Y/N?"
"No," Jay answered. "I'll get out of your hair now then. You've probably got more parents to see."
"I do. Have a good night."
"You, too," Jay replied and then made his way to the door and out into the hallway.
Your head shot up the second you heard the door open. "I was good, right?" you asked.
"You weren't good-"
You dropped your head. No ice cream. "But-"
"You were great, kiddo!" Jay exclaimed.
"Ice cream!" you cheered.
Jay squatted down to your height and looked at the picture you were coloring. "That's really pretty and you're almost done. So, how about instead of going out for ice cream, I call Will and have him pick up ice cream sundae stuff and we can make them at home. That way, you can finish your picture at home."
"Can we watch a movie, too?"
Jay looked at his watch. 5:33. You'd have time to watch a Disney movie before bedtime. "If you start it right when we get home, then yes, you can watch a movie."
"Yay!"
"Now, stay here for a couple more minutes while I go call Will, okay? And, what's my rule?"
"If I have to go somewhere and can't tell you, tell a good adult." Jay had taught it to you as trusted adult, but you couldn't remember that word, so you always said good adult.
"That's right. I'll be right back."
Then, he made his way all the way down the hallway and turned the corner and continued walking until he was sure that you weren't within earshot to call Will.
He picked up on the first ring.
"If you need help disciplining her based on a bad report, that's all you, Jay. You're the disciplinarian and I'm the fun brother."
Jay rolled his eyes. "It's not that. She did great, but her teacher said that she might need glasses. She said she struggles to see the board. Think you could check her out tonight?"
"Jay, she needs to go to an optometrist for that."
"I know, but can't you just do some preliminary stuff? Also, she wants you to come over for ice cream sundaes and a movie, so you'd be there anyway."
"Who says I don't have plans?"
"C'mon, man. I know you."
"Fine, I'll be there in 30 minutes. You need me to pick anything up? Maybe a pizza? Can't just give the kid ice cream for dinner, but you know that."
"If you bring pizza, at least bring a salad with it," Jay bargained.
"Deal. See you in 30. And, I'll put in a call to her pediatrician on the way to your place."
"Perfect. Thanks, man. See you later."
Then, Jay hung up the phone and walked back over to you. "Ready to go?"
"Yes! Ice cream!"
"Ice cream is right. Let's go, kiddo."
Then, you two made your way to his truck and went to the store to buy everything you, Jay, Will, and Hailey would need for ice cream sundaes. And, Jay kept an eye on you to see if you were squinting. But, it was a bit difficult because he was making a mental checklist and checking everything off while you two were in the store. He figured he'd investigate more when you got home.
***
When you got back, you quickly put on your Tangled pajamas and told Jay that was the movie you wanted to watch.
Then, you grabbed your stool from under the sink while Jay was in the living room getting the movie pulled up. Your hand was on the handle to the freezer and you were just about to open it when Jay walked back in.
"And what do you think you're doing, missy?" You turned around to face him and it was like you were a deer in the headlights. "Were you trying to get ice cream before dinner?"
"Maybe..." you answered slowly.
"That's what I thought. Now, how about you get down and start your movie so that you can finish it before bedtime? Will will be here soon and then I'll bring your food to you."
"I get to eat in the living room?" Jay almost never let you eat in the living room! You always had to eat at the table!
"If you eat over your plate, you can eat in the living room. But, if you start being messy, it's right back to the table."
"Okay!" You jumped down from your stool, put it away, and then made your way to the couch in the living room. You grabbed your favorite fuzzy blanket from the back of the couch and then hit play on the remote.
Jay chuckled and reached into the cabinet where he hid the stickers for your sticker chart. Then, he placed one on the line next to the chore that said Clean up when asked - No arguing.
Even though he didn't ask you to put your step stool away, you still did it. And, maybe he was giving you this because he felt guilty about not noticing that you were struggling to see. Either way, you were one step closer to getting a prize.
Five minutes later, Will walked in with the pizza.
"Will!" you exclaimed and jumped up off the couch and ran up to him. "My teacher said I was really good!"
"I heard that! Now let me put this down and then I can give you a big hug. And I even got you your own pizza!"
"You did?"
"Yes, I did, silly!"
"Jay, did you hear that? Will got me my own pizza! That way I don't have to pick the gross onions and black olives off yours."
"I did! Now, let's let Will put down the pizza, hmm?" Jay said and grabbed your hand to gently pull you out of the way.
You moved out of the way, allowing Will to set the pizza boxes on the table. Then, he crouched down and gave you a bone-crushing hug.
"Stop! Too tight!" you laughed, making Will just squeeze you harder while Jay tried his best to contain his laughter at the two of you.
"Alright, you two, Let's eat before the pizza gets cold. Y/N, go wash your--"
Jay was cut off by the door opening and you squealing.
"Hailey!"
You wriggled out of Will's hold and ran up to her. "Guess what?! Guess what?! Guess what?!"
"Guess we know who her favorite is," Will muttered.
"What?" Hailey asked with a giant smile on her face. She was also holding a pink box that you noticed sort of smelled like cookies.
"I did really good at school so I get pizza and ice cream sundaes!"
"I know! Jay told me! So, I thought we could have brownie sundaes!"
She moved toward the table and set down the pink box. Then, she opened the box, revealing fresh, warm brownies from the bakery a block from the district.
You reached for one, but Jay quickly swatted your hand away. "Nuh-uh. Dinner first, missy."
Jay then put your personal pizza on a plate along with a breadstick, baby carrots, and some ranch for you to dip the carrots in. He handed you the plate along with some napkins.
"Go ahead and watch Tangled while you eat, okay? We'll be in there soon."
"Okay!"
The minute Jay heard the movie playing again, he was all business. "So, how are we doing this, Will?"
Jay didn't need to explain to Hailey what he was referring to here because he texted her that you had gotten a good report, but that your teacher also said that you needed glasses after he called Will when you were at school.
"I called her pediatrician and she can see her on Friday. She said that if she does need glasses, the optometrist should be able to get her on Monday."
"Perfect, great. Me and Hailey both work Monday, so you can take her, right?"
"I can take her," Will confirmed.
"Okay, good."
"So, in the meantime, what do we do?" Hailey asked.
"I'm just gonna watch to see if she squints at all during the movie. Maybe if you guys take her to the park tomorrow ask her to see things that are far away, like, Hey! Look at that cool bird! or something and see if she squints or not. Can't really do much until she goes to the optometrist," Will answered.
"You guys are missing Flynn get hit with a frying pan!" you yelled.
"I blame you for her love of violence, Jay," Will joked.
"Coming!" Jay yelled. "Just a sec, kiddo!"
Then, the adults filled their plates and made their way to the living room.

Monday afternoon
Will was going to kill his brother. When you got in the car, he asked if you were ready to go. To where, you had no idea. So, you had asked if you were going home.
"No, to the doctor, silly. To get your eyes looked at," Will answered.
"But I already did that! No more, please! Wanna go home!"
Will sighed but continued driving. "Why don't you want to go to the doctor, kiddo?"
"Because I don't want shots! I didn't get shots last time, so I gotta get shots now! Don't want 'em!" you cried.
"Oh, no, no, no," Will quickly soothed. "No shots. They're just going to look at your eyes. Then, you have to tell them which picture is easier to see and what letter you're looking at."
"Really? No shots?"
"No shots," Will confirmed.
"And I get French fries after?"
Will took a deep breath. Did he want to have an argument with you while driving and then end up either in an accident or late to your appointment because he had to pull over? No. Neither of those sounded particularly appealing. So, he went with the safest option.
"Yes, we can get French fries after."
***
"Y/N Halstead," the optometrist called after you had been sitting at the office for ten minutes.
You stood up and so did Will and you quickly grabbed his hand, letting him know that he would be coming into that room with you no matter what.
"I'm not going anywhere, kiddo."
"I just making sure," you told him, causing him to chuckle lightly.
You walked into an office with a weird thing hanging from the ceiling. There were lots of different circles and it was really big. There was a chair in front of it, too.
While the doctor started talking to you, he lowered the chair. "So, Y/N, I hear you're having a little trouble seeing the board at school, hmm?"
You shrugged. "A little. But only when I'm far away."
"And that's okay. What I'm going to do is help you see better. I'm going to lower down this machine--I know it looks big, but it's not scary, I promise--. Then, I'm going to have you read some letters to me."
"Like I did the other day at the doctor's?" you asked as you looked up at Will.
"Exactly like you did the other day," he confirmed. "Now you just look into special stuff so we know exactly what glasses you need." Then, he quickly turned to the optometrist. "Sorry. I'm Dr. Will Halstead, an ED doc at Chicago Med. Also her older brother."
"He said I gotta go to someone else for my eyes, but he's a doctor," you said to the optometrist.
The optometrist laughed and then shook your brother's hand. "Well, he's right." Then, he got down to your level and said in a stage whisper, "and between you and me, I probably know more about eyes than him."
"Really? I didn't think anyone was smarter than Will!"
"Really. Now let's take a look at those eyes." He moved over to his chair and then had you look into the glass circles. "Now, read me the smallest letter you can see."
***
"How'd it go?" Jay asked when you and Will walked into his apartment. Then, he spotted the McDonald's bag. "Seriously?"
"Only way she was gonna go. You sure she doesn't listen to your interrogations at the district? She had to have learned blackmail from somewhere."
"Haha, very funny. Did it go well, kiddo?"
"Yeah, I had to look at these pictures and tell the not Will doctor what one looked better," you answered.
Jay held back a laugh at your description of the doctor. "Did you pick out any glasses?"
"Yeah, I got purple. Can I eat my food now?"
"Go wash your hands and then you can."
You ran off to go wash your hands so that you could eat your chicken nuggets and fries and then Jay turned to Will.
"She been like this all day?" Jay asked.
"Doesn't help when she has no idea what's going and I have to tell her thirty minutes before the appointment, Jay," Will quipped.
"Fries and nuggies!" you yelled as you ran out of the bathroom after washing your hands, which effectively cut your brothers' conversation about your lack of excitement to see clearly short.
***
3 days later, Thursday.
"You ready to pick up your glasses, kiddo?" Jay asked as you got in his truck in the pickup line at school.
You simply shrugged. "Yeah," was all you answered.
Today at school, during soccer at recess, a boy's glasses fell off and then someone accidentally stepped on them and broke them when you were playing! What if that happened with your glasses? What if you couldn't play soccer anymore because you wore glasses?
You loved soccer ever since you had started playing it last year. And, you and Jay always practiced on Sunday mornings at the park. And, when it was nice out, you two would always have a picnic. It was always a Jay and Y/N date (sometimes Hailey would come along, but only if you agreed to it). That time was sacred for you and Jay because of his demanding job, but what if you didn't get to do that anymore all because you needed stupid glasses to see the stupid board at stupid school?
"How was school?" Jay asked. He knew by your demeanor that your mood was more sour than it had been this morning, and he'd prefer to discuss it now than have you blow up at home. One would be shocked at how much anger you could hole up and spew out from your little body.
"It was good. Same old, same old."
Jay rolled his eyes. You had definitely picked up that saying from Will. "Do anything fun?" he probed. "Was recess good?"
"I played soccer during first and second recess, but I didn't score at all. Stupid boys. They're always faster than me."
If you hadn't added the last part, then Jay would probably have told you that boys have cooties anyway and to stay away from them until you're thirty. But, you did say that last part, so he knew he had to be comforting.
"Well, you gotta remember, you like playing defense, so what do I always tell you?"
"I gotta outsmart 'em...and slide tackle."
Last Jay checked that was illegal in kids' soccer. "I don't think me or Will ever taught you about slide tackling. Where'd you learn about that, kiddo?"
"Adam taught me when he took me to the park when you had to talk to some bad guys yesterday."
"Of course he did," Jay muttered. "Just remember, you can only do that to me, Will, or Adam. Don't try and do that to other people, okay?"
He knew that he should probably tell you to never do that, but eh, he figured he'd let you have a little fun. And, it wasn't like he never got kicked out of games for doing a slide tackle...okay, maybe multiple slide tackles in a game with one leading to the other team's captain getting a concussion.
"Okay," you answered. "I'm not good at 'em anyway."
Jay chuckled. "And let's keep it that way."
***
Jay was both happy and frustrated when he watched you put on your glasses and see the world clearly for the first time in who knows how long. He was frustrated because how could he have not noticed this? Hell, how could Will not have noticed this? And, he was happy as he watched your mouth fall slightly agape and mutter whoa to yourself.
After you made sure that your glasses fit and the optometrist did all the necessary checks, you made your way back to Jay's truck.
"I gotta stop at the district to pick up some paperwork," Jay said as he began driving. "You ready to show off your glasses to everyone?"
"Yes!" you exclaimed. You loved the color of your glasses and everything was so pretty! Nothing was blurry anymore!
When you walked into the district, you were first met with Trudy, who didn't see you at first.
"Looking for this, Chuckles? You left it here earlier and you and me both know that Voight will have your—" And then she noticed you and quickly shut her mouth before she swore in front of you.
"Good catch, sarge," Jay said and took the manilla folder from her.
"Y/N, I didn't know you had glasses! They look so pretty! So much better than my old lady ones," Trudy complimented.
Then, you heard someone coming down the stairs.
"So if I call you old—"
"Shut it, Ruzek," she snapped as Adam strode over to you.
"And, she's back. Thanks, man," Jay complained.
"I was just telling Y/N here how pretty her glasses were before you ever so impolitely interrupted," Trudy said to Adam.
Then, Adam crouched down to your height. "My, my. They sure are pretty." Then, he held up three fingers. "How many fingers am I holding up?"
"Adam!" you laughed. "That's not how they work."
"But I thought that's how glasses worked. How about you tell me how they do work?"
"I just can't see far away. You gotta back up and do that."
He did so and then reached into his pocket.
"So, can you read this?"
"Oreos! I can read the words now!"
That stopped Jay in his tracks. "What do you mean by that, kiddo?"
"I can read the words from far away now and not just close by me. It's because I have my glasses now, duh."
Adam almost burst out laughing at your sass, but held back his laughter when he saw Jay's death stare directed right at him.
"Right, of course, silly me," Jay answered quickly. "Go get your Oreos from Adam and then we can go upstairs and show everyone else your glasses, how's that sound?"
"Okay!" you excitedly ran up to Adam and he handed you the Oreos. "Thank you!"
"You're very welcome!"
You started towards the stairs and Jay quickly whispered to Adam, "Boards flipped?"
"Did it before I walked down here since I heard her voice."
"Great, thanks."
"Jay! You gotta put your hand here to open it because I'm not special enough to put my hand here!" you exclaimed.
"Okay, okay, hold on a sec," he said and then gently pushed you to the side to put his hand on the palm scanner. The door beeped and then he pulled the door open. "Ladies first."
You walked in and immediately everyone's heads turned towards you.
"Y/N!" Hailey exclaimed "You got your glasses!"
"Yeah! Everything looks so much better and so pretty!" You took a moment to look around the bullpen. Despite being in this room with Jay and Hailey for two years now off and on since your dad died, you could finally see it clearly. You thought everything was always a little blurry around the edges.
"How many fingers am I holding up?" Voight asked from the back of the bullpen near his office.
"Three!" you yelled confidently.
"That's right! Wow, she counts faster than you, Ruzek."
Jay held back a laugh while Adam exclaimed, "Why you gotta be like that, Boss?"
"Because it's true. You got the paperwork, Halstead?"
"Right here. I'll get out of your hair now because it's my RDO and I do not want to be here on my day off. C'mon, Y/N, let's go home."
"But I didn't see Kevin or Kim yet!" you whined.
"They're out doing police work, kiddo. You can see them later, okay?"
"But I want to show them my glasses!"
Hailey quickly saw the temper tantrum that was about to erupt and stood up. "How about I take a picture of you with your glasses and send it to them? Then you can see what they say when I get home tonight. How does that sound, Y/N?"
You nodded and walked closer to her. "Yes!"
While Hailey was taking your picture, Jay mouthed thank you to his wife for avoiding a meltdown in the bullpen.

3 days later, Sunday
You did not sleep good at all. You tossed and turned all night thinking about your Jay and Y/N date in the morning. You loved them and you loved soccer! But you couldn't go now because what if your glasses fell off when you and Jay were passing the ball and practicing? And, if you took off your glasses before playing, what if he got mad at you? Jay and Will had told you that you had to wear them all the time! And you didn't want Jay Jay to be mad at you!
So, when you went into the kitchen in the morning (wearing your glasses of course) and saw Jay and Hailey sipping their cups of coffee, one could only imagine your relief when you looked out the window and saw the sky was covered with dark gray clouds.
"Morning, kiddo," Jay greeted. "Doesn't look like we can play soccer today." Then, Jay furrowed his eyebrows as he got a better look at you. You had dark circles under your eyes that looked like they should be for a college student cramming for finals instead of a first-grader on a Sunday morning. "You feeling okay?" Then, he walked up to you and placed the back of his hand on your forehead. "Hmm, you don't feel warm."
"Didn't sleep good," you mumbled.
"I didn't sleep good either," Hailey sympathized. "Must be the weather." She knew it was her insomnia acting up, but you had no idea what that was--and she hoped you never would have to know what that was like--, but she didn't feel like explaining it to a first grader this early in the morning while she was running on fumes herself.
"How about we have a lazy day," Jay suggested. "Movies and coloring sound good, Y/N?"
"Yeah. Can Will come, too? He always does the best coloring."
It was true. Because of how steady Will's hands were due to being a surgeon, he could color in all the small areas in the pictures, even in adult coloring books that Hailey had, that you, Jay, and Hailey would typically make a mess out of and at least color outside the lines a bit.
"I'll give him a call. I don't see why he wouldn't want a lazy day," Jay said.
"And, I think we have some chocolate chip cookie dough in the freezer to bake cookies," Hailey suggested.
Jay glared at his wife and then rolled his eyes. You've already gotten spoiled with treats and takeout more than enough this past week and a half. But, he knew as well Hailey knew herself that she had a sweet tooth and it only got worse when her insomnia was acting up.
"Before we do all that," Jay began, "let's get you some breakfast first. What sounds good, kiddo?"
"Can I have an omelet? With lots of cheese please?"
You were recently introduced to these a few months ago when you and Hailey were enjoying chocolate chip waffles at a diner and Jay had an omelet. You wanted some of his hash browns, but he said you had to try a bit of his omelet. You didn't really want to try this, but your want hash browns overpowered this. And, lo and behold, you liked it! So, now on Sundays when Jay wasn't working, you'd ask for an omelette. It has to be Jay who made them though because he made the best ones between him, Will, and Hailey.
"Omelet it is," Jay replied and then picked up a spatula. "How about you go get dressed while I make this, okay?"
"Okay!"
Then, you ran off to your room to put on some comfy clothes to spend the day in.

"Where's Y/N?" Will joked when he walked inside around 10:30 that morning.
"I'm right here!" you yelled while you sat at the table coloring. You had no idea how he couldn't see you when you were right there!
"Oh, I didn't recognize you with such pretty glasses."
You dropped your head. "You- You don't?"
Luckily Jay was behind you so that you didn't see him wipe his hand down his face.
His brother, Jay thought. Thank god he didn't go into pediatrics.
"I was only kidding, silly! Of course, I recognize you! The only thing different about you is that you have glasses now. But, do you recognize me?"
"Yes! But your hair's really messy! Do you want to use my brush?"
Jay choked on his second cup of coffee at your comment and Hailey quickly hit him on the back.
He cleared his throat. "Sorry, went down the wrong pipe," he said and then coughed a couple more times.
Will smoothed down his hair. "Wind's pretty strong out there. Guess it messed it up a bit." Then, he walked over to the table and set a tray of drinks down. "Coffee for all three of us and hot chocolate for you." He handed you your drink. "Careful though. It might still be super hot. Now, what are we coloring?"

"She is totally out," Jay commented later that afternoon.
The four of you had started watching a movie and you had curled up next to Hailey under your favorite fuzzy blanket. Needless to say, after you struggled to sleep this past night, within thirty minutes of the movie, you were totally out with your head leaning against Hailey's chest.
Hailey smiled down at you. "She's so cute when she's sleeping."
"When she's awake she's a menace now apparently," Will joked.
"Just because she made one comment about your precious hair," Jay muttered. "Let the hair comment go, man. Let it go."
Will rolled his eyes. "So, how's she doing? She mention any headaches at all with her glasses?"
"Hasn't said anything to me," Jay answered. "She say anything to you, Hails?"
"Nothing," Hailey replied. "She also didn't say that kids were mean to her, so that's good, too."
"Yeah, I remember when Jay got his glasses. All the kids teased him about it," Will said.
"It wasn't all the kids. It was you! Just you! And, now they have more education for bullying and stuff, so maybe kids are nicer than when we were kids." Then, Jay changed the subject. "I'm just shocked she didn't throw a fit when I said we couldn't play soccer today because it was storming."
"But, she said she didn't sleep good last night," Hailey reminded him.
"Yeah, I know. But still, she loves Sundays. And, at the beginning of winter a few months ago, she threw a fit the first time there was too much snow on the ground to go."
"I would say consider it a good thing that she didn't fight with you this morning," Will began, "but you said she didn't sleep good. She say anything else to you? Her tummy or head hurt? I didn't notice anything off when I was here, but maybe she said something earlier."
Jay shook his head. "She seemed fine, other than her being tired."
"Okay, good. If she tells you anything else--especially if she's having headaches--let me know."

3 days later, Tuesday
You were usually so excited for Tuesday nights and soccer practice, but now, you were nervous. What if your glasses fell off and somebody broke them? You didn't want Jay or Will or Hailey to be mad at you!
So, when you were running at practice, you went exceptionally slow, which made Jay wonder if you were hurt. He watched you shake your head at your coach, so he must've asked you the same thing.
When you got in the car after practice, needless to say, Jay was slightly worried.
"You okay, kiddo? You didn't look like you were having fun out there."
"I was having fun," you answered, but that was only a half-truth. You only had fun when you were defending and didn't have to worry about running as much, and thus, your glasses falling off.
"Okay. You just didn't feel like it today then?" You shrugged. "That's okay. Everyone has days like that."
What he wasn't going to do was be like your dad and make it seem like you needed to be at 100% every single day. As long as you tried your best with what you had left in the tank, that was all that mattered.
You nodded and just looked out the window while Jay kept driving.
And once you got home, since you put your cleats away nicely without being asked, Jay added a sticker to your sticker chart. But, his detective senses were tingling.
Something was definitely off with you.

One week later
It had been a long week for both Hailey and Jay. They'd had their hands full at work trying to catch a serial rapist who ended up killing his last three victims.
During this time, you had spent most of your time with Will, except on Jay's RDO, and then Hailey's RDO when they each spent time with you instead. Even though each of them knew that the team would be a man down on each of their RDOs, they knew it would be difficult for Will to be the sole caretaker of you with his demanding job as well. So, even though they probably should've worked during their RDOs this week, they didn't.
But, they had been so mentally drained on their days off that neither of them remembered to check your backpack for important paperwork. And, both Jay and Hailey knew that Will always conveniently "forgot" to check this. (But, it was probably because he didn't feel like disciplining you if you got a bad report.)
Now, it was 8pm on Tuesday night, they had caught the guy, and both Jay and Hailey had quickly finished their paperwork so that they were home in time for bedtime.
Once Jay and Hailey had finished reading you a chapter of The Chronicles of Narnia, Jay did what he always did when he hadn't been able to see you on a couple of school days straight: he went through your backpack to see if he missed anything such as permission slips, notes from your teacher, and to ensure that Will had been making you do your homework.
When he went through your math folder, stuck between last week's homework assignments and this week's was a note written in cursive. Because it was written that way, he could only assume it was addressed to him or another adult.
Mr. Halstead, I'm writing you this to make sure that Y/N hasn't lost her glasses. I haven't seen her wearing them the past couple of days and wanted to make sure accommodations didn't need to be made. If she has lost them, please let me know and I will be sure to move her desk up to the front to help her see the board for the time being. If you have any questions, please call me at my office number or email me. I previously left a voicemail for you and emailed you, but I don't know if they went through. -Stephanie Harding.
Jay sighed, pulled out a chair at the kitchen table, and began scrolling through his phone. There, from Friday afternoon, was an email from your teacher as well as a phone call from yesterday morning. How could he have missed these?
"You okay?" Hailey asked as she walked into the kitchen, freshly showered. She grabbed two beers from the fridge, popped the cap off both, made her way to the table, and handed one to Jay. "We should be celebrating, not sulking."
"I know, and I'm glad that case is over and the guy's in prison because, you know, he's a monster, but look what I found in Y/N's backpack."
He slid her the note and she began reading.
When she finished, she looked up. "Don't talk to her tonight, Jay. You might dysregulate her so bad that she might go back to sleep because her routine got thrown off."
"I know, but when am I supposed to talk to her? I don't want her throwing a fit in the morning before school, and who knows what's going to come across our desks in terms of cases tomorrow."
Hailey grabbed one of Jay's hands. "Jay, we'll figure it out. And, if we need to wait for your RDO or the weekend when we both hopefully have off, then we'll do that, okay?"
"Okay." He gave his wife's hand a squeeze and then took a sip of his beer.
Thank god for Hailey Upton, he thought.

The next day, Wednesday
Once you and Jay got home after he picked you up from school, he made you a snack and you pulled out a chapter book to read to him to practice your reading skills like it was just any other day. He set the addition and subtraction flashcards next to him. You'd do those after you read to him.
But, when you took your first bite of your ants on a log (celery with peanut butter, topped with a few chocolate chips), he reached over and slid the book over to himself. Then, he set it down on the chair next to him so as not to distract you from the upcoming conversation.
"We're not reading?" you asked, furrowing your eyebrows at him.
"Listen, kiddo, we need to talk about why you are not wearing your glasses at school."
"I am!" you protested.
But, Jay saw how your eyes widened slightly when he first said it. He knew you were lying; now he just needed you to admit to it.
"Y/N, your teacher called me and told me that you aren't wearing them. You're not in trouble--"
"No!" you shouted and jumped off your chair. Then, you ran to your room and slammed your door.
Tears pricked your eyes as you threw yourself on your bed.
You couldn't play soccer when you were in high school if you had glasses! At all the games you went to, none of them had glasses! You couldn't give up soccer just to wear these stupid glasses! What did your brothers and your teacher know, anyway? None of them even wore glasses!
You were waiting for Jay to come yell at you for slamming your door, but he never came. And you were so tired from school and from the short conversation that you had with Jay, that you eventually just cried yourself to sleep.
As for Jay, the second he heard your door slam, he sighed and laid his head on the table. What the hell was he supposed to do?
***
You woke up to someone gently shaking your shoulder.
"Y/N, c'mon it's time for dinner, honey."
Hailey.
"No," you mumbled.
You didn't want to face Jay after everything!
"You need to eat, Y/N. You didn't even finish your snack earlier. Just c'mon out and eat dinner with me and Jay."
"Jay gonna be mad at me," you said quietly and rolled over so that you were facing the wall.
"He won't be mad; we just want you to eat something. He made your favorite, fettuccine alfredo, remember?"
That's right! You got to pick dinner once a week and told Jay last week that you wanted fettuccine! And today was Wednesday! It was your dinner day!
"Oh yeah! I forgetted!"
Then, you jumped out of bed and ran downstairs.
Hailey shook her head as she walked behind you. Kids and their moods.
When you got to the kitchen, your plate was set right where it usually was with fettuccine, broccoli, and garlic bread.
You eyed Jay suspiciously when you sat down.
Then, Jay noticed you weren't wearing your glasses. Hailey noticed the very slight tilt of his head, so she quickly jumped in.
"They're on her bedside table," she said. "She was sound asleep when I went up there."
"Mhm," you agreed and then took a bite of your pasta.
Jay figured it was better to let you eat almost all of your food before he started in on the glasses conversation again. He needed you to eat something because, at this point, you hadn't eaten anything except your one ant on a log since 11am at school, which was seven hours ago. He didn't know how you hadn't woken up and been hungry but hey, he knew as well as you did that tantrums made you utterly exhausted.
Once you only had half of your garlic bread left, Jay decided it was time to have another go at this.
"Y/N, me and Hailey were talking, and we thought that if you came home from school wearing glasses, you can get an extra sticker on your chore chart," Jay said. "How's that sound?"
You shrugged. "Okay." You had already been doing that. You'd put them on right when you got in the car. You didn't need them for up close stuff like talking with your friends anyway and you could see Jay, Hailey, and Will just fine without your glasses; they were just a little blurry around the edges.
"That means we need to see you wearing them when we pick you up," Jay continued. "You can't just put them on when you get inside the car." Your brother was nothing if not perceptive.
You could do that. You'd just put them on when you walked out of school for pickup. You couldn't wear them all the time because then what if someone said something about you not wearing them while playing soccer at recess? Then you'd have to wear them at recess and you couldn't play soccer with them on!
"Okay," you said.
"Okay, good," Jay replied.
But, he shot a glance at Hailey. That was way too quick for you to agree to this without a fight even with the added incentive of getting a sticker on your sticker chart.
Something was off and both he and Hailey knew it.
***
Two days later, Friday
Jay walked out of an interrogation, relayed the info to his team, and then sat down at his desk to do some digging into this guy's financials. But, his phone lit up, notifying him that he had a voicemail.
He saw it was from your teacher and his brow furrowed.
"Hi, Mr. Halstead. This is Stephanie Harding calling. I received your email a couple of days ago explaining how you talked with Y/N about wearing her glasses and she said that she'd wear them and that they are not lost. I just wanted to inform you that she hasn't worn her glasses at all throughout the school day, but will put them on for pickup.
I just wanted to inform you of this and please let me know if there's anything that I can do to help."
Jay clenched his jaw and sighed frustratedly after he finished listening. He thought he'd be dealing with this level of sneakiness when you were a teenager, not now!
"Nothing in the financials?" Hailey asked from across from him.
"Still working on that," Jay answered. "Y/N's teacher called. Said she still hasn't been wearing her glasses."
"What? She was wearing them yesterday when I picked her up."
"Her teacher said that she'll put them on at pickup but won't wear them at all during the rest of the day."
Hailey shook her head and rolled her eyes. "We are getting played by a first-grader, Halstead."
"Don't I know it. I'm gonna give Will a call and see if she wore her glasses at pickup. Maybe he can get to the bottom of it while she's at his house tonight."
***
"Alright, kiddo. Game plan today is homework, snack, and reading. Then we'll grab a quick dinner somewhere and go to the girls' soccer game. Sound good?" Will asked when you got inside and set your backpack down.
"Don't wanna do my math homework," you complained. "It's stupid."
"What are you working on?" Will probed. "Maybe I can help you."
"Subtraction. My friends say it's like adding, but the opposite, but it's not!"
"Okay, okay, calm down. I'll make you a snack and then we'll work through it together. How's an apple with peanut butter sound?"
"Do you still have the green apples?"
"I do. Green apple with peanut butter coming right up."

Will wasn't stupid. He knew why Jay probably couldn't get the answer from you about not wearing your glasses. And that was because he was asking at the wrong time and because he was the one who disciplined you. Will never had to do that except for taking away ice cream as a bedtime snack a couple of times when you mouthed off to him. You didn't have to worry about having to go to bed early or not being able to watch more tv because you had gotten in trouble with Will. And, you and Jay were very much alike; both of you bottled up your emotions and were stubborn to no end...which is probably why you argued more with Jay than you did Will and Hailey and why Jay couldn't get you to talk about your glasses.
So, Will didn't bring up the glasses at dinner. He didn't even bring them up when you were at the soccer game.
But now was the time for him to bring this up.
You were currently sitting down next to him on the pull-out couch with your teddy bear and your favorite blanket, all ready for a chapter of Narnia and then for bed. You were comfortable and there was nothing to overstimulate you. You had food in your system and the excitement from the day was over.
You were calm.
"Before we start reading, kiddo, I need to ask you a question," Will started.
"Okay, what is it? Is it about what happened in Narnia when me Jay and Hailey readed it last week? Because I can tell you so you're not con...con—" You scrunched up your eyebrows as you tried to remember the word. "So that you know what's happenin'," you said instead.
"It's not about Narnia, but you can tell me before we start reading if you want. But first, I want to know why you aren't wearing your glasses. Do they make your head hurt? Did someone laugh at you?" You shook your head. "Okay, then what is? What's going on, Y/N?"
"Soccer," you mumbled, but it was so quiet that Will couldn't even hear you.
"What was that?" Will asked softly. "It's okay. You can tell me. I won't be mad at you."
You looked up at Will's face. He didn't look mad. Maybe you could tell him. Maybe he wouldn't tell Jay either and then everything would be fine.
"I can't play soccer no more be-because I have glasses!"
At this, you started to cry. All of the nerves you had felt about lying to your brothers and Hailey and the sadness about not being able to play soccer anymore all came tumbling out of you. And, it didn't help that no one on the high school girls' soccer team that you just went and watched earlier wore glasses. That just proved your point!
Will sighed and held back a laugh. Leave it to a little kid to catastrophize from A to Z.
"Who told you that?" Will asked, now realizing that he needed to get to the root of the problem.
"No one did! But none of the big girls wear glasses when they play soccer! And one boy's fell off at school and they got smashed and I'm the only one on my team that has glasses and---"
"Hey, hey, slow down. Take a deep breath, okay?" He allowed you to take a few breaths before he placed a hand on your shoulder. "You can still play soccer."
You looked up at him and your eyebrows furrowed before your mouth fell slightly agape. "I can?
"Yes, silly! We just need to get a strap for the back of your glasses because then they'll stay on when you're running."
"And I can play soccer with Jay Jay on Sunday?!"
"And you can play soccer with Jay on Sunday, yes," Will confirmed.
"Yay!"
"Now what do you say you fill me in on Narnia before I start reading to you, hmm?"
***
"Tell me you got something out of her," was the first thing that Jay said when he answered Will's call later that night.
"Jay, this is our sister we're talking about, not a criminal investigation."
"I know that, smartass. Still...anything?"
"She thought she couldn't play soccer with her glasses."
"What? Where'd she get that idea?"
"Well, kids are very observant, Jay. Maybe more observant than you seeing as you didn't even catch this--"
"Neither did you!"
"Last I checked, my job doesn't involve me doing a stakeout or working undercover."
And then Will launched into a recap of the conversation he had with you.
"Come to think of it," Will began when he was done and had answered all of Jay's questions, "I'm shocked you didn't think to get one for her right away because you didn't get contacts until high school and wore your glasses with a strap when you played soccer all the way from elementary school to middle school. You know what? I think I still have some pictures of that from the family photo album I took from Dad's--"
"Don't you dare!" Jay threatened.
"Who's gonna stop me?"
"Name your price...within reason."
"Breakfast tomorrow, 9am before me and Y/N go pick out her glasses strap. And you're paying."
"Deal!"
And years later, once you got to high school, you never did get contacts because one, you thought you looked better with glasses than without, and two, you wanted all of the little kids that came and watched your games to know that they could play whatever sport they wanted regardless of whether or not they wore glasses.
A/N: Thank you for reading and don't forget to vote and comment! Also, fun fact, I didn't get my glasses until I was 21. I went to renew my driver's license and barely passed the eye exam, so now I wear glasses.

Upstead Foster Daughter
Did you ever wonder how Upstead would be as foster parents for a teenage girl? Like Hank and Erin, Hailey and Jay welcomed Olivia to their home when she was 16. Olivia holds a lot of grudges and is full of mischief, but she is also incredibly sweet and has a tremendous need to feel like she belongs. To her surprise, Hailey and Jay will give her exactly that.

[Chapter II] “You’re on your own, kid, you always have been”
No one expected to hear a stranger's voice through their radio, let alone saying that Jay was bleeding out on the pavement.
Tumblr media
“Who the hell are you?” Voight’s surprised voice came through the radio.
“My name is Olivia Rivera, I'm with your officer Halstead and he's been shot! I'm sorry I couldn't call an ambulance but I don't have my phone with me,” Olivia said everything so fast they almost couldn't understand it.
“Shot? What the hell?” said Hailey in exasperation. She was driving with Voight after Jay left by himself.
The whole team was checking the crime scene from their current case when Jay got a call from a CI. Hailey was busy interrogating a witness when he got the call. She told him to wait for her but he was so eager for whatever information his CI had to give that he decided to go by himself. Turns out it was a trap. Hailey did not know the details yet, but she couldn’t help but think that this would have not happened if she had been with him.
“Wh-where are you?” Hailey asked, already feeling her heart start to beat out of her chest.
Olivia told her the address as slowly as possible in her state; after that, Hailey started bombarding her with questions she did not know how to answer.
While they talked, Voight rushed in passing the address to dispatch requesting an ambulance and some patrol cars. The rest of the team followed behind.
“Is he conscious?” Hailey asked.
Silence followed her question, leaving them both tense.
“Olivia! Is he conscious?” Hailey repeated.
“I- He- He was until now when I called you.”
“Does he still have a pulse, Olivia?” Hailey guided her to check.
“Yes, he does!”
“Okay, okay, keep putting pressure on the wound.”
“What's the ambulance ETA?” Voight's rough voice questioned dispatch.
“We're close, hang tight Olivia,” Hailey said, trying to calm the girl and herself down. He would make it, he always made it. This was not his first time being shot, but she surely hoped it was his last. She couldn't do this last time and she especially can't do it now.
“He'll be fine, Hailey,” Voight's voice invaded her thoughts. “Halstead’s strong, he'll get through this.”
Olivia didn't like hospitals. She felt trapped, unsafe, and overwhelmed. Probably because of the amount of people coming and going, the voices overlapping each other. There was too much going on and she shouldn't even be there in the first place.
After Jay's co-workers got to them everything happened in a blur. The ambulance got there seconds later, along with the other members of the team.
When Hailey and Voight arrived, Hailey came running in Jay and Olivia’s direction. She stared at the teenager with a mix of desperation and gratitude. Olivia stepped away as Hailey took her place. As others approached, Olivia stepped more and more away from the scene, ending up a little far away from it all.
She watched the scene unfold before her eyes in a trance. Jay was put into an ambulance and taken to the hospital, with several police cars following behind. Should she leave? She wants to know if he is going to be alright, of course. On the other hand, she feels like she was not supposed to be there.
“Hey! Olivia, isn't it?” a tall man appeared in her field of vision, his eyes were gentle and his voice calm.
“Yes,” Olivia answered.
“Name’s Kevin, Kevin Atwater. This is my friend, Kim Burgess,” he pointed to the woman beside him, and she smiled softly. Both officers looked shaken but they masked well, Olivia thought. Of course, this was not easy for them. Seeing a colleague hurt like that, almost lifeless.
“There's someone we can call for you? Your mom or dad?” Kim asked.
The girl didn’t answer. Kevin and Kim exchanged a look.
“Well, just come to the hospital with us then, okay?”
Voight watched them from afar, getting ready to enter the car and head to Med. Jay was the priority now, but they all were grateful for the girl, she saved Jay’s life after all. He made a mental note to thank her personally later.
Olivia debated for a moment. She decided it was better if she went with them and found a way to leave later without them noticing.
She nodded and followed them to the car.
“You can get cleaned up there,” Kim said after getting in the car.
Kevin started the drive to Med. Olivia didn’t answer the officer, suddenly feeling hyper-aware of all the blood on her. The adrenaline was wearing down.
“Are you okay, Olivia?” Kim asked softly.
“Yeah, sorry… I'm fine.”
“It’s okay, we will get to the hospital soon.”
Sitting in the doctors' room in Chicago Med a couple of hours later, Olivia was clean and waiting for a chance to leave. The really nice nurse called April who helped her clean up and gave her some food came by minutes ago and told her Jay would be alright. She left again when another nurse called for her so now was the perfect time for Olivia to leave.
She did not need to be discharged since she was neither a patient nor a suspect, right? Olivia got up and left the room, bringing some of the snacks the nurse gave her.
“Don’t worry Hails, we’re getting the bastard who shot Jay,” Kevin said firmly, looking at a very distressed-looking Hailey. Olivia got to the hospital’s lounge and saw Jay’s team reunited talking. They had their backs to the door she entered and could not see her.
They started to talk about the man who shot Jay and what they were doing to find him, most of which Olivia did not understand or did not care to try to understand. She stopped paying attention and started to plan how she would get out of there. There was only one way out and she could not leave without them seeing her.
Olivia was scared. She knew she wasn’t in trouble or anything but they were still police so she might as well be in trouble if they got to know more about her. Hell, they might as well already know.
“Stay with your husband Hailey, we’ll get him,” Voight's words drew Olivia's attention. Husband? That explained why Hailey was the most distressed of them all. The look on her face when she saw him lying on the pavement.
“Oh! Olivia, there you are,” said April, the nurse who helped Olivia earlier. Olivia's name caught the group's attention and five heads turned to look in her direction.
“Olivia!” Voight said, approaching the girl. “How are you? I need to properly thank you for helping my detective, I don’t know what could have happened if you weren’t there.”
“I… well, he was…” Olivia did not know what to say, so she came with a simple “You’re welcome” and a shy smile. She didn't expect to talk with anyone, let alone have all the attention on her.
“Well, I’m Sergeant Hank Voight and this is my team,” he went on introducing each of them. “You met Officer Kim Burgess and Officer Kevin Atwater. Detective Hailey Upton was the one you spoke with on the radio. And that is Officer Adam Ruzek.” he pointed to each one and they gave her a nod or a small smile.
After the introduction, he turned to look at her again. He spoke in a more serious tone, “We’re going to need your statement.”
Shit. That is exactly what she was trying to avoid. “I can’t!” was the first thing that came out of her mouth.
“It’s okay Olivia, we checked your file and we’re going to call your foster family on the way to the station,” Hank said.
So they know about her foster family, but they did not know she had run away yet. That was why she was in that alley, in that part of town, by herself.
Olivia thought about running but she could never get far with this many cops around. On their way to the district, she thought about jumping from the moving car but that was too stupid even for her. She laughed at the thought. Sitting in the car with Kim and Kevin again, she accepted her fate.
All her effort running away was for nothing. She was back to square one.

Southern Caffeine (RI)
Jay Halstead x Baker!Reader Warnings: None i think
Author note: As always, feedback is greatly appreciated
Lemon Drops Cafe and Bakery. Big bright yellow and white letters read, and slight lemon decals surrounded the sign. Jay checked his phone before entering the shop; Hailey had insisted that the ex-army ranger get the morning coffee from the new bakery since the one in the break room was utterly broken. Pushing the glass door open, a light twinkle of a bell announced Jay’s presence. A head popped through the doorway that seemed to lead to the kitchens.
“I’ll be with you in a second.” A southern drawl stunned Jay.
The inside of the bakery was just as cozy as the exterior. Clusters of yellow chairs were pushed into three wooden tables, each bearing a yellow and white lemon tablecloth and varying-sized pillow. Along the opposite wall rests a series of tall displays, most filled with either what smelt like fresh loaves or display cakes. Turning more towards the counter, Jay noticed that in between the large coffee machine and the small portion of the counter dedicated to the register was a large display cupboard partially filled with cookies, cupcakes and some savory treats. Along the wall behind the counter, Jay could see an assortment of coffee bean bags that looked like they had yet to be packed away in the above cupboard and potted plants. The bakery overwhelmingly filled Jay with a sense of calm, and he loved the welcoming, cozy, homely environment that Hailey had sent him into.
A young woman soon walked out of the kitchen doorway and greeted Jay warmly. Her Y/H/C was haphazardly thrown into a bun, and a yellow ribbon wrapped around the tie. She wore a white short-sleeved shirt beneath a pale yellow apron and chocolate brown pants. Her apron was covered in white dashes of flour and smudges of frosting and chocolate. The pin on her apron read Y/N, a sticker of a small bundle of lemons decorating the rest of the pin. When Jay’s eyes reached her face, he took note of the imperfect splash of flour that dusted her cheeks and the bright smile that graced her features.
“Good Morning. What can I get ya?” Her voice was perfectly airy and sweet, like the melody of his favorite song. For once, the voice wasn’t dull or uninterested; instead, it sounded like she genuinely wanted to be covered in flour dust and chocolate smudges at nearly 6:30 in the morning.
“Four large double shot coffees and Hailey Upton’s usual.” He recited the order that Hailey had given him only ten minutes earlier. Jay moved to open his wallet to pay when Y/N simply shook her head.
“No need to pay, it’s on the house.” Her smile was blinding as she moved further down to the coffee machine, Jay following.
“At least let me tip you or something”, Jay argued as the women moved expertly around the small area, quickly making the coffee’s and packing a small box full of freshly baked treats.
“Please, this is the least I can do for you guys”, she spoke, “Besides, that would be breaking my own rules” " she said, pointing towards the large poster plastered above the register. Jay followed her finger and shook his head as he read the sign.
‘Cops, Firefighters, Doctors and Nurses, drinks and treats are on the house, No exceptions!!’
“My dad was a ranger and taught me the value of first responders, so when I started my business, I made it a rule that those who protect us, normal people, from our stupidity would never have to pay. Plus, I make enough profit to cover it anyway.” As she pushed the box and cup tray towards Jay, she gestured to the jar on the counter next to the register, “But if your conscience won’t let you leave without leaving a tip, then here, donate to this month’s charity, the Chicago police fund” Jay practically swooned over her smile this time. pushing a few large bills into the jar, Jay left the cafe with a dopey smile and a mental promise never to get coffee anywhere else.

Together (VII)
Warnings: Mentions of violence, blood, injuries, abuse, kidnappings, shootings, swearing and scary men.
Summary: When Jay least expected it, he suddenly starts hearing things. And maybe, he's starting to hallucinate too.
A/N: Am I suddenly full of inspiration and writing in school when i should be doing my lab write up? Yes I am. This chapter has been changed many times but I finally finished editing. A little spoiler- maybe I’m being nicer to my babies 🙃
Previous Chapter / Series Masterlist / Next Chapter
Tumblr media
Over the course of eating their very poorly put together ‘meal’, Will came to the conclusion that the food hadn’t been tampered with and so he was happy to continue feeding you.
You had to admit that you felt like a baby, your older adult brother feeding adult you. You tried insisting you could feed yourself but with the state of your shaking fingers, hands sore from the countless times they’d been tied back, Will denied you your request.
The man that had given the tray of food returned and this time, there was something rectangle like sticking out in one of his trouser pockets while what clearly sounded like keys was sticking out in the other.
Your heart skipped a beat, and you could feel Will’s heart rate increase from where his hand was positioned over yours. He must’ve noticed it too.
The Ezra's were so meticulous in their plans and their behaviour was always erratic and on another level of violence that it was impossible to believe one of their henchmen could even, for a second, have the thought of being nice to their victims.
But you were continuously surprised by them because as he took the empty tray, leaving behind the two waters and single juice, he ‘accidentally’ dropped the plastic rectangle and as he was walking away, his back turned to you both, a key fell and clanged against the ground, but he never looked back.
And just like that, the door slammed behind him, massively contrasting the immense kindness he showed mere seconds ago.
Holy friggin shit balls.
*****
Was Trudy worried? Yes, indeed she is. Was she going to show any concern? No, not unless she was left alone with her detective.
Ever since dispatch had forwarded her Jay’s call, she’d been on her feet and alert. And ever since she found out that Jackson and Ezra Murray were the culprits to blame, she was determined that they weren’t going to get away again.
Trudy knew all the Halstead siblings, but she knew Jay the best. Over the many years, not only herself but many, many others were forced to get used to not one but three Halstead's being in existence and working within less than fifteen minutes from each other.
Currently, Trudy and Jay were alone in the bullpen since the younger detective was barred from any field work unless they found Will and Y/N’s location but that was the only exception. Right now, her job was to keep Jay company, keep an eye on him and continue looking for any more clues or evidence that could be of any help.
Jay was very clearly still losing his mind and his mental and physical state deteriorated as time passed. At this point, Trudy couldn’t help but think the worst and fear for how her detective was going to fare as a result.
Currently, she was sat opposite him at Hailey's desk, doing her own bit by going through security footage that had too many hours of video on it. Usually, she would get bored doing this, but it was a little different this time because whenever she glanced up, she was faced with the struggling sight of your brother who never asked for too much.
All he wanted was to get his older brother and younger sister back.
Suddenly, the phone on Jay’s desk was ringing. Luckily for him, he had a second phone whenever he went undercover and since the first one had been taken and was likely smashed in an evidence bag somewhere, this was all he was relying on.
The sound was slightly jarring as it interrupted the pin drop silence they’d been in but neither of them showed any sign of discomfort. Instead, Jay went to answer the call, but his solemn mood didn’t change. It was evident that he wasn’t expecting much since it was his undercover phone that they’d been using two days ago on a case.
Just as the desk sergeant was about to go back to her CCTV footage, she felt the entire bullpen still. The tension so thick it was suffocating her veins restricting any blood flow, and as she looked up, it became dizzying.
His already pale face had nothing on Snow White and from where she sat, she could his heartbeat thundering out his chest, practically vibrating. All this could only mean one thing.
“Will?”
What the fuck
For a hot second, Trudy thought that Jay was in so much pain that he was transferring some of his hallucinations onto her to alleviate his symptoms but then he continued talking into the phone and reality sunk into her bones.
"Shit, Will wait slow down I can't- what?!"
Without prior warning, Jay shot out of his seat, wavering slightly on his feet causing the older woman to follow and stand by his side in any case he fell from the whiplash she's sure he gave himself.
"Knives- you've got keys?- Y/N's not unconscious- she's lost her voice- your bleeding?! When- Why are you talking about grape juice?!" Jay paused several times, his words repeatedly getting cut off by Will on the other side of the phone. The longer the call went on, the more confused Trudy became. Jay must've been thinking the same as her from the height his brows rose every time he spoke. They went from talking about knives and blood to grape juice.
The duality of the Halstead brothers.
"Wait so he gave you a knife and somehow you found a gun just casually lying around? Will, I swear to God if you-"
And when Jay screw his eyes shut, something in her mind told her the doctor was doing something stupid and very questionable, very in character even when in a life or death situation. It was nice to know people would never change.
Despite the anxiety growing in her chest, the call lasted longer than she expected. Will was being very efficient and careful for managing whatever he was doing and that put her at somewhat ease. Eventually, nothing physically tore them apart but it was poor internet or a lack of a connection that abruptly ended the call.
"Tell me you got a location?" Jay asked, hope drowning out any other emotion in his ever so expressive eyes. If it wasn't for lives being on the line then she would've scoffed and scolded him but a sarcastic remark would do for now.
"What do you take me for?" She asked incredulously as she glanced at the computer screen, almost immediately committing the address to her memory.
"I'll call Voight but get in the car first."
But Jay didn't need her permission, he was already moving.
*****
So much had unravelled in the last twenty minutes, you were still struggling to understand it all.
With all the uncertainty and determination in the world, you and Will had no other plan but to take they keys and the pocketknife and basically run as fast as you could. Well, run as much as Will could since he was carrying you on his back, very reminiscent of your childhood while he navigated the halls as best he could. You made a very pathetic argument that you could walk on your own but when you tried standing up, your legs gave in on themselves and Will gave you his motherly disappointed look that was very spot on; you and Jay had been on the receiving end of this look for way too long now that you should’ve been immune to it but here you were.
Opening the basement door, you both cringed at the loud sound it made. You guys hadn’t even left the basement yet and it was already going off to a great start.
As gently as he could, Will readjusted your position on his back, his arms moving to hold under your thighs more securely so that in a rush, you wouldn’t move. As he did so, you kept your arms around his neck, barely gripping him due to both a lack of strength and cautious to not strangle him.
Before leaving the room, you and Will sat and contemplated very long and hard about your escape plan. You were provided with very little by the mysterious man you were now deeming your saviour and maybe guardian angel depending on how successful the escape was.
Staring at the burner phone, you swore. You couldn’t remember anyone’s phone number for the life of you. Easily, you could’ve called 999 but the response much longer than calling someone either of you knew. It shocked you only a little when you couldn’t recollect a single person’s phone number, not even Kelly’s or Jay’s.
But like always, Will was there and knew exactly what to do. Maybe it was his doctor nature, but he had several numbers memorised and for some odd reason, he remembered Jay’s undercover phone number. You called him stupid, but he only laughed it off while he punched in the numbers.
You waited in anticipation, your nerves imitating Will’s as he held the phone to his ear, biting on the inside of his cheek as he waited for the phone to stop ringing. And when it did, Will audibly let out a sigh of relief, you felt like crying.
Will explained in half detail, leaving out a lot. It was obvious that Will was trying to relay the necessary details Jay needed to know about their current situation but then he decided to add in the random unnecessary fact that you drank grape juice. That totally threw you off, but Will kept talking as if nothing were wrong.
When Will eventually finished talking, he went silent and listened to what Jay was saying. For a minute, you couldn’t hear a voice on the other side of the phone but then you heard his muffled voice, and it brought you immediate ease knowing he was safe.
And before you knew it, the call ended, and you were out the dreaded basement.
Back to the present, Will was carefully cruising the empty corridors of the very nicely furnished warehouse. It made you question the desolate and dirty state the basement was in. At one point, you pointed out a gun lying on an ottoman; it was very suspiciously placed but when Will checked, it was very much real and very much loaded.
So here you were: a burner phone, pocketknife, gun, and sheer drive. You didn’t want to jinx it but… yes you weren’t going to jinx it.
The warehouse was ginormous. Every corridor was identical to the next and the furnishing was as though a professional interior designer had been inside. Luckily for you and Will, Jackson and Ezra’s lacky’s hadn’t been plastered all over the place, making your escape just a little more easier.
To remain as incognito as possible, Will only whispered to you when absolutely necessary, narrating to you what he was doing and what was going to happen. So far, so good. Will was slinking around, movements smooth and looking like a hair on his body had never been touched since being here. If you didn’t already know he was a doctor, then you would question his physical abilities and profession.
Each corner you turned, you felt your heart drop, your body anticipating disaster. The more time passed, the more you could feel Will sweat and struggle. He had begrudgingly admitted that he was hurt, going into slight detail that Ezra stabbed him, and he’d been hurt more throughout the several times you were passed out. You knew he was hurt and if you were to go in order of the most hurt to the least, the list would be: You, Will and then Jay. And considering the blood you saw covering Jay’s body the last time you saw him; God knows what went down between your oldest brother and your kidnappers.
“Will, if you’re tired, we can stop for a second.” You whispered into his ear but the only reply you got was him shaking his head. You knew his answer made sense, you needed to get out as soon as possible before you got caught but if Will took just one minute or two to recollect himself then maybe he’d feel better.
However, he decided that he was going to put himself last and everything else first because according to him, apparently you and getting out of this damned place took priority to his light-headedness and the blood that was only now slowly beginning to stop running like a river.
And so, without another word, he readjusted you one more time, his grip tightening around your thighs but not too much so it would hurt, and he continued walking.
Going downstairs was the hardest thing Will had to do by far. Yes, carrying you and maintaining your weight on his back was difficult but he could manage, and you felt much more lighter than what you should’ve been being a firefighter but that was a concern for later.
Staring down from the top of the staircase, Will calculated the descent. Yes, it would hurt a lot considering how much his legs shook as he merely stood but he was now starting to get worried but how little you were moving. Initially, you would move every now and then when your body felt stiff or to whisper under your breath so only he could hear you.
Now though, Will didn’t want to say it, you were deathly silent.
He shoved all his negative thoughts aside, deciding to deal with them later because the biggest problem he had was staring at him mockingly. How did his life come to such a point point that stairs scared him?
Luck must’ve decided to be nice to him all of a sudden because under five minutes, he safely delivered the two of you on the ground floor. Now, all that was left to do was find a back or front door and get the heck out of this place.
But obviously, fate was laughing down on the Halstead’s because luck ran as fast as she could, after only three minutes of doing her job because Will was facing down two familiar looking men decked out in all black.

Neighbors pt.2 - Jay Halstead
Requested: technically yes?
Word count: 1,379
Warnings: nothing really, just kinda cute
A/n: tbh i kinda just winged this
Masterlist
Tumblr media
It had only been a few weeks since your late night run in with Jay, embarrassment still following you when you passed him.
Not that he poked fun at you. Jay halstead wasn’t that big of an asshole. People had fears and he respected that. Everyone had something they were scared of. Even people that swore they didn’t.
Even him. Though his wasn’t as simple as bugs crawling or flying around his apartment. Or even heights. It wasn’t something as normal, as mundane as that. No.
What Jay feared, was being alone. Truly alone. He’d never admit it of course, but having his team by his side always made him feel better. The late nights at Molly’s. Invitations to come and watch a movie or a game, anything.
He grasped at all of it, holding onto it like a life preserver. Especially after tough cases. When the events of the day took a toll on him in ways nobody would ever understand. All he wanted was to ignore it and have someone by him that would keep him sane.
And usually he did. Hailey was a great partner, she rarely let him go home upset, always offering a shoulder to cry on. But this case? He screwed everything up. Got too close.
Took too many risks. And now he was isolating himself. Letting his team cool off before he talked to them, knowing each and every one of them had some choice words that they wanted to say to him.
You knew something was off when he didn’t react to your parking, instead silently getting out of his passenger side, closing the door without even slamming it in annoyance. Part of you even felt bad for possibly making his night worse as he trudged his way to the building.
It felt like an alternate universe had opened up and swallowed you whole. The man had held both the front door to the building open for you and made sure you were in the elevator before pushing the close door button.
If you had been any closer, you would have asked him what was wrong. If there was anything you could do. But you weren’t. The two of you were barely acquainted with one another, enemies if anything. So instead you stood silently, back to the corner.
Once on your floor you went to your door, stopping as you watched Jay go past, a light sigh leaving your lips, “Hey,” Your voice nearly made him jump, slightly looking up with a tilt of his head.
“I don’t know what has you all moody but, if you wanna talk…” You trailed off, the man muttering a thanks before going inside, leaving you in the silence that followed.
Awkwardly, you went inside, heating up some leftover pizza before changing into some pajamas. It was a Friday which meant no work for the next two days which also meant wine and shitty movies.
At least that’s what you expected as you sat, getting almost an hour into the film you decided on and about quarter of a bottle of wine, when there was a knock on your front door.
With a confused look you stood, heading to the door and peering through the peep hole. Jay was standing on the opposite side, hands in his pockets as he stood a reasonable distance from the door.
Instantly you opened it, looking up at him. “I uh, I was hoping to take you up on that offer.” Jay muttered, partially ashamed that he caved, leaving his apartment to come talk.
But he also knew if he didn’t get all of it off his chest then he might implode. Which wouldn’t be very good. “Yeah, yeah of course,” You stepped aside, letting the clearly distraught man in. “Do you want something to drink? I’m currently downing wine but I have beer, and water or something.”
Jay shook his head, “A beers okay, if you’re sure.” He attempted to not feel like a burden to you, clearly not sure what he was allowed to do, or say or touch.
It wasn’t like he was your best friend or something.
You nodded towards the living room, handing him the bottle of beer you grabbed before moving back to the couch. He took the spot on the opposite end, sitting practically on the edge with his leg bouncing.
“Are you okay?” Your voice was soft, the instinct to comfort taking over any sort of feeling you generally had for the detective.
Jay let out a dry laugh as he shook his head, a soft sniffle following that you pretended you didn’t hear. “I would say yes but if that were true I wouldn’t have come over here. So.” He shrugged, answering the question with a non-answer.
You shifted forward, leaning to try and see his face. (Spoiler: you failed) “Is there anything I can actually do? Do you just wanna sit here? Talk about it? Ignore it?” There was no way you could not ask him those questions.
He was on your couch, solemn look on his face as he drank the beer. “My entire team is pissed at me. Not that it isn’t deserved, I screwed up our case today and it’s going to backfire on all of us. But I just,” Jay sighed heavily, “A boy almost died and I had to do what I did.”
There was a moment of silence before he looked over at you. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have come here I just… I hate being alone and you’re the only person that doesn’t hate hate me.” Jay shook his head.
“Well, doesn’t hate me enough to kick me out.” He corrected, chewing at the inside of his cheek. “Which you can totally do if you want to.” Jay huffed out, taking a long sip from the bottle.
You shook your head, “You obviously need someone, I wouldn’t kick you out. Not when you’re like this. You can stay here as long as you need to.” Hesitantly you put a hand on his back, feeling him tense under your touch.
“Did whatever you did at least work?” You attempted to make conversation, a small smile cracking on his face as he nodded.
“Yeah, it did. The kid’s safe. Back home with his family.” He took pride in what he did as a detective. Most, if not all, of the choices he made on the job were things he was proud to do.
Jay was good at his job, he knew what he was doing and he didn’t care what happened if it meant the people he needed to get to were safe. “Good, that’s good.” You breathed out, unsure about what to say next.
This was all uncharted territory and honestly, it was weird. One of two times Jay Halstead was in your apartment and he was nearly in tears. Not something you were used to.
A slight chuckle came from the man, pulling your attention back to him, “Are you seriously watching this movie?” He had tried to use the film you had on in the background to distract himself, laughter building up as he shook his head.
“What- it’s my night for shitty movies shut up,” You nudged his side, face scrunched up as you did. Jay held a hand up defensively, nodding as he did.
“Well you sure did pick a shitty one.”
“Yeah yeah, I bet you have great taste in movies.” You replied with a roll of the eyes, Jay sitting back against the couch, actually relaxing a bit.
As he tried to stop the laughter, he nodded again, “I definitely do.” Jay answered matter of factly, looking over at you. For the first time you noticed the slight rim of red around his eyes, like he’d been crying before he even got to yours.
It almost made you want to hug him, seeing people in pain never felt right. “Fine, here,” You tugged yourself out of your thoughts, reaching to grab the remote that was handed to him seconds later. “Put something better on.”
“I will.” Jay took the remote, flipping for a movie he liked and that’s how the rest of the night went. On your couch, watching a movie with the person you least expected.

Some Chicago P.D. musings (Or is it Upstead musings?)
I just want to word-vomit a little about the whole "trauma response" thing re: Upstead, and it didn't really fit as part of my review, which had to be more about the episode. And the reason I want to go into it it's not even because it doesn't really fit with what we saw on screen (it truly doesn't), but because if that was ever the intent behind it, then the writing absolutely failed.
The problem, I think, it's that it's easy to say people who have suffered trauma did this as a response to that trauma and somehow equate that to trauma response when the two things are not anywhere near the same. Honestly, we've all suffered trauma to some degree, so I feel like this framing basically means 90% of the things people do in life are a trauma response.
Hailey and Jay (you can take Jay out of my cold, dead hands, I'm never using that other name) had a relationship that was not about their individual trauma. It really wasn't. Having someone you can lean on and talk to in bad times doesn't mean your relationship is all about trauma. In fact, sharing your trauma with someone is one of the healthiest things you can do.
Did Hailey and Jay marry quickly and as a response to a very emotional moment? Yes. Does that make it a trauma response? No. It was literally not about the trauma, but about looking for something good during a bad time and hanging onto that.
In fact -- part of that storyline is Jay literally checking with Hailey that this is something she really wants, not just a knee-jerk reaction to her trauma! The show established one thing and now, it just wants to sell a different thing because Jesse Lee Soffer left and they absolutely botched his exit.
And make no mistake about it, this is a choice Chicago P.D. is making. They could write out Hailey in a way that reunites Upstead, just as they could have written Jay out in a way that didn't ruin them. We wouldn't even need to see Jesse Lee Soffer for it to work. But they not only won't, they now want to rewrite history to make it seem like Upstead was always something other than what we saw with our own two eyes. That's the part that hurts.

Killer Cookie
A/n: I finally finished and I don’t know what else to say but I hope you love reading this since it’s the last part
Word count: 3.3k
summary: You get into a fight at school and Hailey helps you and your brother to stop fighting
———————————————————————— It was a chilly, no… freezing day in Chicago. It was snowing but not as much currently because the storm is supposed to hit later tonight.
You decided to walk to the firehouse instead of riding the bus because you didn’t feel like hearing everyone screaming whenever the bus would almost crash, even though you were one of those people with your friends.
Your class won a food party because they collected the most votes on the door decoration contest. Luckily none of the food had strawberries. Because you are deathly allergic to strawberries and always needed an EpiPen with you just in case.
Which reminded you to tell Will or Jay that you needed a new one since you lost your last one when you went out sledding with them.
But when you opened your locker to get your backpack and Jacket there was a box of chocolate chip cookies.
~inside the box
don’t worry there’s no strawberries,
-secret admire ;)
You screamed internally because you lived  for Chocolate chip cookies, and you had a secret admirer?
***
On your way home you were starving since you didn’t eat much at school, only really some fries from the restaurant.
So you decided to eat 2 cookies and let everyone else fight for the rest, they were yours after all.
Opening the box carefully so you didn’t drop the box and whatever was in your hands.
You shoved the whistle cookie in your mouth. You may do girl things but you eat like a grown man, especially a football player.
Not even 10 seconds after swallowing the cookie your throat started to feel dry and you couldn’t breath
(Give me a break today this is all going to be in mine right now)
“Shit. There’s no strawberries in these, unless.” You picked up a cookie and broke it in half. “What kind of psycho put strawberries in chocolate? I- I need to get t-to the house”
***
You basically pushed everyone aside who tried to greet you and rushed to the kitchen.
“Ayy, Y/n how’s my favorite Halstead sibling doing” Kelly joked
Jay hit Kelly in the elbow hard. “C'mon man it was a joke, I can have favorites”
“Nah, I see how it is, guess I’m never bringing food over here again. And you can keep Y/n forever then” Jay shrugged.
“I was just trying to cheer her up, she looks upset” Kelly usually payed attention to
Your face whenever you came in. He would know if it was ok to make jokes or he needed to pull you to the side and talk to you. Right now you are upset but that’s because you weren’t processing anything.
But clearly ignoring everyone was for nothing because you barely made it to your drawer of the kitchen before you fell and your backpack cushioned your fall.
At least you didn't  hit  your head.
“Y/n you good?” Jay stood up from the chair he was sitting at. This was so unlike you. You always came in and said “Hi” or “Hello” to everyone whether or not you were having a bad day
“Y/n?… SHIT Y/N!”Jay screamed
“Take her back pack off,” Matt said. “What’s wrong with her? She turning blue”. Someone else’s voice came out from the other 10 voices.
“Give her CPR or something” Jay spoke as Kelly was rubbing your sternum.
“Jay we don’t know what’s wrong with her let alone why she’s turning blue it could be the cold” Kelly said “cmon y/n come back to us”
“I DONT CARE TJATS MY FUCKING SISTER WHOS DYING.” Jay roared.
Hailey practically runs in due to all the commotion with Stella and Sylvie right behind her
Sylvie and Stella ran over to you and started assessing you while Stella started CPR.
Hailey walked over your bag which was thrown a few feet away from you and decided to go pick it up, to help out.
Hailey picked up the box and your backpack so it was out of the way but when she looked in the box she saw something that she thought you wouldn’t have.
“Shit, where does Y/n keep all her stuff in here” Hailey was looking at both Sylvie and Stella but she hoped at least both of them would answer.
“Uhh bottom drawer far left”
Hailey rummaged through the draw until she found a tube with a bright orange tip. And sprinted to you and pushed everyone out of the way.
As everyone was yelling at Hailey like she was crazy she rolled up your pant legs and Jabbed the Epi Pen in the middle of your thigh.
“HAILEY ARE YOU CRAZY? WE DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH HER” Jay screamed
“Strawberries- she had strawberries” She sighed
***
My head feels like it’s underwater
Everything seems so muffled
What-what happened?
Your eyes flutter open and immediately shut them due to the light.
“C'mon y/n come on back to us” a soft voice says
“Give her space guys” as time goes on the voices get louder and it forces you to open your eyes.
“Just rest, we’re not gonna push you to talk, we’ll talk at home. We’re gonna leave soon”
Hailey had to go home while you were passed out because she had an early shift tomorrow so Will drove over to the firehouse to come and get both you and Jay.
“How is she?” Jay looked in his rear view mirror to see you guys.
Will checked your pulse again and looked at the watch on his wrist “her pulse is better but her breathing is slow, I might give her oxygen when we get home”
“Why would she eat strawberries?”
“They were cookie Jay, maybe she didn’t know. It happens”
“Well it better have been an accident or me her are gonna have a serious talk” Jay grumbled
“Don’t be to harsh on her”
****
You woke up around 5:30 am and couldn’t go back to sleep, and the one thing you hated the oxygen.
You’d much rather have the nasal one but you can’t exactly argue with adults on what’s better for your health so you just have to deal with the mask.
Eventually it got hot and you got bored since you couldn’t find your phone. You assumed it was still at the firehouse or Jay had it.
You dragged your little tank/ machine across the room and grabbed your comforter (the very top blanket on your bed) and your pillows and one stuffed animal  and stuffed them into the bathtub and you found your laptop and you put on your favorite show.
This was better than being in your bed.
Will woke up to the sounds of Jay screaming in his ear. So much for trying to sleep in.
“Wake up, Y/n’s gone she’s not in her bed” Jay almost screamed at the top of his lungs.
“Are you crazy? Check her bathroom, I found her sleeping in there one time after a reaction and I heard sounds coming from there this morning” Will turned his back to Jay.
Jay ran into your bathroom which was connected to your bedroom and what he saw made his heart melt.
***
“Here’s the real story, the PTO had a cookie drive where you could buy cookies for your friends and stuff like that and they would put it in your locker and we would find them, mine had a note that just said that “thanks for being great friend, don’t worry there’s no strawberries” Okay, so maybe you lied a little but it’s better than jay beating up some poor boy.
“Did it say from who?” Jay asked in his detective tone
“Nope, and I’m pretty sure Hailey told me she threw the box away while I was passed out” you shrugged.
“I guess it’s fine, maybe the PTO forgot. It’s not like anyone hurt you on purpose so it's fine. Right jay” Will sent Jay that look to just drop this subject this one time.
“Yeah right…” Jay picked at his pancakes. He wanted to look into it more but Hailey would kill him.
But… the laughing and the image of you guys faded into his mind.
Flashback end… (WHAT?!??)
Will realized it, it was Milly. Milly was somewhat an old friend of yours and he remembered the day you said you told her that you were allergic to strawberries when she was over. You’ve only been allergic for around a year and half. There hadn’t been anyone else you told.
Except for Milly…
Will shot up from the couch, grabbed his keys from the bowl and ran outside to his car.
Will attempted to call Jay but he didn’t answer. So he was probably out with Hailey.
“Jay when you get this meet me at the Jail they have Y/n immediately. There’s not a lot of time”
***
“Uhh yeah, I just opened my locker and they were there. I didn’t think anything of it, I guess I was just excited” You shrugged.
“Did you tell anyone else about your allergy other than Milly” Jay spoke
“No, not until after the incident, I honestly don’t remember much from that day, but I don't really care to be honest.” You shrugged once again.
“Y/n listen to me, you’re going to have another court date. You’re going to tell everyone exactly what you told us. We’ll get security footage from the school and we’ll also get statements from everyone at the house” You’re lawyer was pretty strict and prescient on getting you out.
It wasn’t the first time someone has gone against Milly in court and you’re lawyer had won 4 cases against 2
***
1 year and 7 months ago
“Well well well isn’t it the detective's little sister?”
“What did I do not milly?” You sighed.
“Nothing, I just wanna make your life a living hell. Your brother is horrible and if I can’t do anything to him I might as well hurt what’s best to him, his little sister-.” Milly had a smirk on her face.
“Please Milly, I’m just trying to fix my makeup” you rolled your eyes and looked back at the mirror.
“Let’s see if make up can fix this” before you could ask her what she meant when you felt stinging on your right eye.
“WHAT THE FUCK MILLY, WHATS YOUR PROBLEM?” You screamed.
“It’s not you I have a problem with. It’s your brother's little squad.” She spits as the rest of her group come in and corner you.
A kick from behind throws you to the ground.
As you try to fight back Milly and get friends they overpower you as it’s 1v5
(And yes this happened at my school but in the hallways❤️)
After a few more kicks to the stomach one of the girls speaks up.
“Let’s go, don’t kill her.”
“You’re off the hook for now Halstead.” She kicks you once more in the stomach and you cry out in pain.
***
As soon as you got home you peaked behind the wall to see if Jay was watching Tv to make sure the coast was clear. Nothing
You ran to your room and to your bathroom.
You pulled open your draw of Makeup and crabbed your concealer.
(I don’t wear much makeup yet so give me break on how it works😭)
“Y/n? Are you good in there?” Jay knocked on the door
“Yeah, yeah just fixing something” you replied
“Alright, Will called and asked if you wanted to go out for dinner”
That made you freeze. You can’t go out like this… Will and Jay could tell the signs of when you used too much makeup.
“Uhh, I don’t really feel like it. Can her just pick up chick fil a or something”
“Are you ok? You love going out” Dam it Jay, did you really have to pick a being detective as your job.
“Yeah, I rather just hang out with you guys tonight y'know”
“Alright I’ll call him”
***
“Y/nnnn… Y/N”
“Is this one of those seizure things she used to have when she had that head injury?” Jay whispers to will
“No, it doesn't look like it. I’m hoping it’s not because I will sue this place down if they let her get a head injury and didn’t let any of us know.” Will grits that last part between his teeth.
“Y/N!” A voice pulls you out of your thoughts.
“Yeah, tell them in court got it. I gotta go bye”
“Alright, call me if you need to schedule anything or if anything happens” your lawyer stood up from the chair.
“Yeah thanks Chris” both Jay and Will got up and shook his hand and walked out.
“What was that about” Will mumbled
“I don’t know, Y/ns strange but you never know what’s going up in that head of hers.” Jay shrugged as he walked down the steps.
Just three weeks left Will said to himself, three weeks. And then you could go back to school. You missed a whole school year so you would be a year behind all of your friends.
How could Jay not care, he hadn’t fought or visited you as much as he did.
He would talk to him when they got back to his apartment. This was gonna be another fight
“Jay?”
“Yes will”Jay hummed
“You seem to not care about y/n all you do is sit her all day and watch these stupid games”
“First of all the games aren’t stupid, and second of all how dare you say that I don’t care about her. It seems like you don’t care about her”
“ME? Oh no you sit here and go to the district come back home and drink like your Addict”
“And you? Don’t act so innocent. You’ve been sitting there on your couch rotting away when you’re not at work” Jay scoffed
“At Least I’m trying to help, I’m trying to read about how we can help Y/n. Do you ever use your brain or are you so fucked up inside? You gonna turn up like dad if you don’t check yourself” Will shoved his finger in Jays chest.
Jay flung wills hand away. “Watch who you’re talking to. Don’t bother  coming over. And you can have y/n when she gets out since I don’t care about her. Now get the hell out of my house”
Like I said, the Halstead siblings are falling apart.

January 29th 2024
Court date
“All rise” Everyone stood up as the judge walked into the room
Will,Jay and your lawyer Chris had given you a talk on behaving and doing exactly what they said.
You were gonna follow through with those rules but you had something else in mind to add. A way that everyone would see the true face of Milly.
***
“I have a question for my client”
“During your first court, Ms. Taylor accused you of abusing her over the months, and looking over CCTV footage from your so called confrontation Michelle walked over to Ms Halstead instead and she threw the first punch. If you had looked at the cameras you would have seen it”
Milly looked astonished that someone had said her real legal name and not Milly.
“MR. Olsen, I did look at the security cameras and I saw what I saw” The judge shrugged.
You had enough, the judge kept lying, Milly kept telling fake stories and everyone wans´t helping.
“I’ve had enough” You stood up. “Y/n what hell are you doing sit down” Jay yelled in a whisper.
“Back off Jay, Your name isn’t Milly Parker. It's Michelle. Isn’t that right? Ms, Taylor? There’s video proof of everything and every single one of your group of friends. You think I haven’t had an outsider for months? Giving me all the information I know right now. I knew it was you who tried to Kill me with the cookies. I got video permission and I saw it. Best part is I didn’t even have to wait for you to be proven wrong in a couple of years because IT'S ALL HERE. YOUR A FUCKING SNAKE, A LIAR AND BITCH”
Jay and Hailey got up and pulled you out of the courtroom before security did it themselves.
“Y/n are you crazy, you’re going to end up getting more Time in jail”
“You don’t understand Jay, she’s the one who hit me first. She’s the one who gave those strawberry Cookies” You cried.
Jay pulled you into a hug, so you wouldn’t run off and he could comfort you. “It’s alright, you’re ok. I’ll figure it out.” “Go get that footage on that screen, if they try to stop you someone named Harrison Butler will help you” Jay whispered to Hailey and she nodded back.
“Y/n I’m gonna leave you with Kevin for 5 minutes while I talk to Will about something really quick. Is that ok?” He could feel you nodding in his chest.
***
“Natalie, It’s Jay. I need you to send Y/ns medical records from when we came for a check up after she had a reaction”
Jay kept humming in response when Natalie kept asking questions
“Alright thank you”
“I’m getting super tired of the crazy shit” Jay mumbled to himself.
***
“You need to listen to me. When you go in there don’t get up and scream, don’t accuse, don’t exaggerate. Stick to what Voight told you” Jay was on your level giving you a pep talk. This was the final court session. It would be decided who was guilty and who wasn’t. “Do you understand?”
“Yes. If I get to go home can I get McDonald’s?” It was worth asking.
“Of course y/n. I’ll buy you all the McDonald’s you want and whatever you want.”
“Y/n it’s time, let’s go” Your lawyer Chris came out.
 ***
“Can Ms. Y/n Halstead come up” The judge “would please tell your side of the story to settle this once and for all.”
After the longest speech of your life which was almost 40 minutes. And other people are coming up to talk. A decision was made.
“I sentence Michelle Taylor 30 years for attempted murder, 10 years for fraud and 3 years for assault.”
“For Y/n Halsted, she and her family will be compensated 10 thousands from the star and 25 thousand from the Taylor family from what she has been through.” You looked at Jay with a shocked face, that was a ton of money. “Case closed.” The Jude spoke. Everyone around you started clapping and cheering.
People from your school who had also been affected by Milly were there, News stations, Your family from Med, Fire and Pd. The whole state had heard about your story and it finally worked, people came out told their stories with Milly and this Past year of Hell was over.
You won
***
Now in the car With Jay and Will you guys were one of the last to leave since people were interviewing you guys like crazy. You were starving for something, not prison food.
“Can I have McDonald’s now?”
Jay and Will looked at each other and then looked back at you “taking that as a yes, I’m tired of prison food so let’s go”
***

summary: you and your girlfriend, hailey upton, get into a fight before a stakeout. what happens when the stakeout goes south while the two aren’t on good terms?
word count: 1230
warnings: being shot, angsty, happy ending, hospitals, arguments, swearing. not proof read !! first fic
Tumblr media
27. That’s how many bricks went up the locker room wall, as you sat there, dissociating. Hailey, your girlfriend, and work partner had been getting on your nerves, and not in the fun way.
She would constantly only focus on work, spending long nights hunched over the laptop in the small apartment you shared together. Not only were you worried about her, but she’d been completely neglecting you as a girlfriend. Countless times you had tried to bring it up but were always met with a dismissive “I know babe, I’ll do better”, but she never did.
The locker room door swinging open brought you back to reality, as you saw the blonde you loved so dearly walk in… an angry look spread across her features. I really didn’t want to get into it with her right now, we had a stakeout in half an hour, but that didn’t stop her, clearly. “Babe? What’s wrong?”
Such a simple question triggered so many pent up emotions. She knew what was wrong. “Hailey are you for real right now? You know what’s wrong! You…” My voice shook a bit as I spoke, my voice raised. “You’ve been neglecting me completely the past few weeks!”
I saw her eyes widen in shock, I wasn’t the type to yell, ever. It seemed my outburst made her angry, she was always stubborn. “It’s not my fault you’re so fucking needy and work harder than you do!” She snapped; her tone sent a shiver down my spine. The moment the words came out of her mouth she knew she’d ventured too far. My face immediately dropped, as I didn’t respond, silently walking past her and out of the locker room, not hearing her faint voiced begging me to come back.
°.♡┈┈∘*┈୨୧┈*∘┈┈♡.°
We arrived at the stakeout location, and everyone felt the tension between Hailey and I. You could cut it with a knife. Jay and Adam glanced at each other, seeing if they were picking up the same vibes, which they were. Our attention quickly turned back to Voight as he explained what exactly we were doing.
I thanked anyone watching from above with Voight paired me with Adam, instead of Hailey. He was like a big brother to me, plus he made stakeouts a lot less boring. He grinned as we walked away together, to our designated spot, aka an old, unmarked car, with no heater, in the Chicago winter. Fun.
“Y/N, you good? Been watching you stare into space for the last 20 minutes.” The chirpy voice pulled me back down to earth. “Yeah, just Hailey… you know how stubborn she is.” I sighed, as Adam chuckled lightly under his breath, nodding his head as we fell into a comfortable silence. Occasional small talk about a movie was all that happened for the next few hours, just wanting to go home and cry.
It was around 7:30pm now, been here since 3:30. Out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of a man wearing all black, quickly radioing and signalling to Adam to slowly get out of the car. We crouched as we walked behind a fence, until I stepped on an empty chip packet. The crinkling sound alerting the man to our presence, as he spotted us and started running.
“Suspect is on foot heading down North of Main, officers following” I spoke into the radio, breathing heavily as Adam ran behind me, I had always been the fastest in the unit. We were running, and as I turned around a corner, I felt a red hot pain in my stomach, as I fell to the ground.
He was hiding behind the corner with a gun. Now, a bullet from that gun was in me. As I collapsed, Adam came around the bend, seeing blood seeping out of my vest, as he cursed to himself, before he dropped down and applied pressure, making me groan in pain. “50-21 Ida, officer down, roll an ambulance to my location immediately!”
Hailey was on the other side of the block, her heart stopping once she heard the call, jumping out of the car and sprinting to me, it felt like she was going to pass out when she finally made it. Tears grew in her eyes as she saw me, lying on the ground with blood around me, Adam holding my wound down. She kneeled next to me, holding my head in her hands as tears fell down her cheeks, Adam still trying to stop the bleeding.
“Hailey I’m- “My voice was weak as I spoke, and raspy from screaming. She saw that. “Shhh baby... don’t speak, okay? You’re going to be fine yeah? I’m sorry about everything, just hold on. Don’t close those beautiful eyes” Her voice was strained and shaky, trying to convince herself more than me, that I’ll be okay. We heard the ambulance sirens, music to everyone’s ears. Everyone was speaking, it felt like I was underwater. All I could feel was Hailey’s hand on mine, as I was lifted into the ambulance before I fell asleep.
°.♡┈┈∘*┈୨୧┈*∘┈┈♡.°
No one had ever seen Hailey like this before. Pacing back and forth in the hospital waiting room, the rest of Intelligence watching her. Many had tried approaching her to try and get her to stop, but nothing worked. Her eyes were bloodshot and puffy, what if she never saw me again?
Everyone shot up the moment Will walked through the doors. He looked tired, his hair messy and his eye bags dark. This was hard for him; I was very close with both Halstead’s.
“She’s had surgery to stop the internal bleeding, and the bullet has been removed. We lost her twice on the table… but we got her back. She’s in ICU, probably going to wake up soon. But she’s okay.”
The collective sigh of relief from everybody was immense. Especially Hailey. Everyone was here primarily just to know you were alive, so they let Hailey go and see you, while they went home for the night, promising to come back in the morning.
My eyes blinked open, wincing at the harsh hospital lights. I groaned as I looked over, seeing Hailey staring at me. She was a mess, her face was red and dirty, her hair was all tangled, almost looked like she was the one who was meant to be in the hospital bed. Mustering up all my strength as I started to speak. “You need a shower Hails.”
She chuckled, her face lighting up. I was okay. “God Y/N, I thought I’d lost you. I’m so sorry about everything… you were right, I’ve been neglecting you and it’ll never happen again. I’ve taken a month off to be at home with you and help you heal… I was so scared.”
My heart melted as she spoke, even in my dazed, high on painkillers state, I knew how much I loved her. “It’s fine Hails, I promise you that. I love you, and I’m sorry I got shot and scared the shit out of you”.
Hailey let out a breathy laugh, knowing how much I loved scaring her, but not usually like this. She got up and moved the chair closer to me, leaning down and giving me a long kiss, as she held my chin.
“I love you more. Never scare me like that again.”

Jay Halstead x daughter
Heyyy this is my first time in a while writing a story and I feel like my writing isn’t as good as it used to be, that’s also why this one shot is so short <3
Words: 580
Warnings: not proof read, mentions of blood and hospitalization
Summary: Jay’s daughter has her first period and is a bit unsure of how to handle it, so he calls his brother Will for help.
Tumblr media
Raising a teenage daughter on your own wasn't always easy and Jay Halstead knew that better than anyone, cuz he had a 14 year old daughter named Emily. Despite all the ups and downs and sometimes quite heavy fights and disagreements, hear and Jay were close and Emily was also close to her uncle Will and few others from both Firehouse 51, Intelligence and Med.
It was an early morning in Chicago when Emily woke because of some stomach cramps. She rolled up on her side and curled into fetal position and just laid like that for a minutes until her dad came in to wake her up before he left for work. But concern spreader over Jay's face as he saw the distressed state his daughter was in, he gently approached her and sat down in the edge of her bed pulling some of her out of her face behind her ear as he caressed her arm lightly.
"What's wrong pumpkin?" He asked in a gentle tone as Emily could barely move due to the pain in her stomach who kept intensifying.
"It's my stomach. It really hurts. Can we call uncle Will?" Emily asked her brother curling up even more as Jay felt her forehead which was burning up a bit.
"Oh sweetie, you're burning up. Let's get you checked up" Jay said as he pulled the covers of Emily to carry her down to his truck when he saw the blood on the bed as he started panicking and took out his phone to call Will.
"Hey, what's up?"
"Will, it's Emily. She woke up with severe stomach pain and when I removed her covers there was a lot of blood on the sheets and she can barely move. She's just laying in her all curled up, I'm bringing her in"
"Okay, based on your description it sounds like experience her first period. I'll be ready for you when you get here"
"Okay thank you Will"
Jay said as he hung up the phone and went back over to his daughter as he gently he shamed her arm but she didn't react to it, he tried again a little harder this time as she slowly opened her eyes and immediately felt the pain again as Jay gently picked her up trying to not move her too much as he carried her down to his truck and got her buckled up as he wrapped her in her favorite blanket calling Hailey while driving off towards Med telling her he wouldn't be in today.
Arriving at Med Jay picked up Emily who was still wrapped in the blanket as she clung to her dad when Will came over with a gurney as Jay placed his daughter on it but she refused to let go of him.
“Come on, Ems. You gotta let go so Will can take a look at you just like you asked for earlier” Jay said in a calm tone as Emily loosened her grip on Jay and Will wheeled her into a treatment room.
“Emily” Will said calmly getting the attention of his niece as she was struggling to keep her eyes open.
“I’m gonna give you some pain relievers and April is gonna come in and give you some fluid. So now I suggest you get some rest princess and I’ll be back to check on later” Will said kissing the top of his nieces head as he went out and closed the door

Would the Chicago PD characters have tattoos?
This is all my own thoughts and headcanons, lol and just pure fun.
Alvin Olinsky: He would. He'd definitely get something to honor Lexi after she died. Like her birth flower or name or something. Al probably also had like a back tattoo of some sort that nobody, except Meredith and probably Hank and Trudy know about. Like a snake.
Trudy Platt: She would. But like only one tattoo and it's across her ribs and that similar to Al, nobody knows about it and she never told Randall until their first time having sex together. Trudy smirked while Randall looked at it.
Hank Voight: No. But he thought about it after Camille died and than again after Justin. But he never figured out an idea that he thought would truly honor them. Hank, Trudy and Al almost got a matching tattoo drunk more than once tho.
Antonio Dawson: Yes. He has a lot. Antonio's very much a "every major (and sometimes minor) life event deserves a new tattoo" person. He definitely got Eva and Diego's names and birthdays tattooed like three days after they were born.
Erin Lindsay: YES. Like 18th birthday she got her first tattoo kinda gal. Partially to rebel against Hank and Camille, and partially to finally have control over her own life.
Kevin Atwater: Yes. Several. Mostly on his legs though he has a few on his chest. Kevin has a thigh tattoo as well.
Adam Ruzek: Yep, absolutely. Similar to Erin, he got a few when he was young. Probably drunk and got some dumb tattoos and regrets them sometimes. More recently though he got something for Makayla and Kim. Like their names or flowers or something cheesy. Adam also definitely has a banana tattooed on his arm for Al. 100%.
Kim Burgess: She didn't for a while, but after she adopted Makayla, Kim probably got like the adoption date or Makayla's birthday tattooed. Kim probably also did that one trend, where people have their partners/kids draw them hearts to get that tattooed. She definitely did that with Adam and Makayla.
Hailey Upton: She has like some small flowers on her shoulder or ankle. Hailey and Jay also got matching tattoos of the date they got married. Hailey got hers covered up after the divorce, but she always knows it's there.
Jay Halstead: The matching one with Hailey. Jay never covered it up there and it's a constant reminder of what he lost. He also has a small stupid one he got matching with Mouse one night, that while he'll tell people he regrets getting, he secretly loves.
Mouse: He has the one matching with Jay. Mouse also has a small Mouse tattooed on his arm.

Rewind, Remix, & Replay Jay & Kim 6x5
You can read the rest of the series here
This one is pretty short but it should hold you over. I’m so excited to write the next four chapters. I have big ideas! That being said it might just be one chapter next week.
The team had all gotten together for brunch. Trudy was celebrating her twenty-five years as a cop. Playing two truths and a lie was always fun and competitive when it was a table full of cops. “And go,” Trudy sat back in her seat waiting to see what the tables consensus was.
“Okay, Dickin’s don’t do Karaoke so that’s the lie.” Kevin is confident and Hailey points at him agreeing with his words. But Kim shakes her head dismissively thinking she knows her mentor better than that.
“No definitely not. It’s soccer. The woman hates moving.” Trudy scoffs at the comment crossing her arms over her chest. Her sharp eyes watched the way that Kim leaned into Jay. Their chairs were pulled close together and his hand was resting on her thigh with her hand on his forearm absently caressing it with her thumb. The familiarity spoke of a long relationship in its natural movements and shared looks.
Jay laughed, “Yeah, there is no way you play varsity soccer in high school.” The table continued their roasting. The team was in high spirits and the last week had been running smoothly. The tension between Jay and Adam had faded along with his impressive shiner. They all lingered even after they finished eating, enjoying the company and teasing of one another.
Jay got up to order another mimosa for Kim at the bar. It was a Saturday and they may have another round if they were going to be there for a while. A shadow fell over him. “You want another drink Sarg?” When Trudy didn’t respond he turned to look at her. Her gaze is still on the table the team is sitting at.
“I haven’t seen her that happy in a while.” Jay’s blue eyes followed her gaze to Kim. She had a huge smile, and Antonio said something that made her throw her head back and laugh. The sound brings warmth to his chest. It’s infectious and makes him smile too. “Don’t screw this up, Halstead. That is my girl, you better take care of her. I promise you, you won’t find better.”
Jay turned to fully face her. Her eyes held a seriousness that he matched. “I know. I have every intention of keeping that smile on her face.” Life was finally settling down. Work was back to normal. Everyone was getting along and had fallen back into a seamless understanding and camaraderie.
Kim’s sister had spent two weeks in rehab. Zoey had been staying with Kim and in turn with him. The pair didn’t sleep apart well anymore. Nicole had gotten out and was more like herself. Zoey had gone home. A peace in Kim that had been missing for too long had returned. She seemed lighter. Less worry furrowing in between her eyebrows. “She is my girl too.” Trudy gave him a short curt nod of acceptance. If Jay didn’t know any better, he might have thought she had teared up a little.
“Good because I like you, Halstead. I would hate to have to kick your ass.” Jay couldn’t contain his bark of laughter. “I mean it Chuckles. You hurt her and you’ll pay the price.” It wasn’t the first hurt her and I’ll kill you spiel he had gotten but he did not doubt that it was the most dangerous. And that was saying something considering he had gotten it in various degrees from Kevin, Antonio, and Voight. Kim was well loved in the team and the men within were protective of the females. Apparently, that protection was limited to outside the group. Jay didn’t mind it though. Honestly, he was happy there were so many people who cared about Kim. If that meant he had to deal with a little more third-degree he would take the tradeoff.
“I do not doubt it. And if I do- I'll let you.” A silent understanding passed between the two. It was broken by the bartender setting a bright orange drink on the bar. Jay pulls out his wallet fishing out a few bills before handing them to the server. “Thanks, man. Her next drink is on me too.”
“A Bloody Mary,” Trudy told the man who nodded and pulled a short thick glass. Jay laughed as he shoved his wallet back into his pocket.
“I should have guessed.” He tapped the bar top before grabbing the drink and heading back over to the table. Trudy kept facing the bar but watched in the mirror. She watched as Kim turned in her seat as Jay approached her, their fingers grazing as she took the glass from him. She watched Kim’s chair slide closer after Jay sat down closing the distance between the two of them. Her hand went to his thigh as he threw his arm over the back of her chair.
The bartender set her handsomely garnished drink on the bar as he spoke, “Ah, to be young and in love again.”
