Oliver Stone's magnificent 'WTC' is a reminder that even the most horrifying events bring out the good in our society
World Trade Center is likely the one summer release you least want to see. It is, after all, a brutal reminder of the horrifying events of September 11, 2001 — a cataclysmic tragedy that scorched our souls, burned our hearts, and permanently stoked our deepest fears. Why rekindle the awful memory of that day when you can escape into mindless summer fare? But the fact is, World Trade Center is the one film you don’t want to miss. By no means is it easy to sit through, and even though it trades on the notion of hope and heroes, it still manages to depress the hell out of you, recalling a day that left our country — and much of the world — shellshocked beyond comprehension.
There are some critics who say it’s too soon for cinematic dramatizations of the 9/11 events; the collective emotional wounds are too fresh. Even I have still not mustered the courage to sit through United 93, Paul Greengrass’s dramatic supposition of how events played out on the one plane that, due to the courageous efforts of its passengers, didn’t strike its intended target. Despite the fact that I make my living watching movies, I just can’t emotionally confront that movie.
I wasn’t sure I was ready for World Trade Center either, but one can’t run from fears forever. Within the first five minutes — a serene, expertly paced montage depicting a city, Manhattan, starting its daily routine — director Oliver Stone had my attention. By the midway point, he had my admiration, for this is the first time in years that Stone, a sporadically great filmmaker, has made a movie this genuinely absorbing and compelling. With the exception of an appearance by Jesus — an hallucination observed by one of two Port Authority police officers trapped beneath the rubble of the Twin Towers — Stone forgoes his usual cinematic tricks and instead applies a sturdy bricks-and-mortar style of direction, one that places a huge emphasis on drama. He lets the situation, as well as our familiarity with it, carry the film.
The worst thing any filmmaker could have done was to turn the destruction of the towers into a disaster epic (although I’m sure one day some aspiring Irwin Allen will try). The magnitude is there, but it’s the small, human events within that day that hold the most potency. Stone, working from a screenplay by Andrea Berloff, knows this, and he concentrates on the story of those two trapped Port Authority officers, John McLoughlin (Nicholas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Pena). Even though we know the outcome — they were two of only 20 survivors rescued from Ground Zero — their story, in Stone’s hands, is as gripping and suspenseful as they come, fraught with angst and anxiety, fear and uncertainty. Stone adds weight by cross cutting from the trapped men to the reactions of their wives, who have no idea whether or not their husbands have survived.
Maria Bello is brilliant as Donna McLoughlin, portraying her with a steady, unbreakable resolve, while Maggie Gyllenhaal imbues pregnant Allison Jimeno with an increasingly edgy panic. Through their reactions, Stone is able to draw out of World Trade Center a stirring, intimate, deeply identifiable reality.
World Trade Center has many astonishing, memorable moments, but is at its strongest during its first act, as the attack occurs. Stone captures the confusion and the inexplicableness of the morning’s events with a master filmmaker’s touch. Once John and Will are trapped, the men have little to do but try and stay awake in hope of rescue, yet you can see it in their eyes: They don’t expect to leave this underground hell alive. Cage is especially compelling — his performance hitting extremes of quiet resignation and primal terror. Pena is less unbridled than Cage, but his fear is no less palpable. The supporting cast includes Stephen Dorff, Frank Whaley, Danny Nucci and Jay Hernandez, who, as a fellow trapped officer, provides the movie’s most heartbreaking moment. Frankly, there is not a single performance in the whole of World Trade Center that rings false. It is a perfectly acted film.
You would expect Stone to create a film that delves into the conspiracy theories of that day — God knows, there are enough of them swirling out there, take your pick — but he puts his ideologies aside, and, for once, simply delivers the goods. Remarkably, he seems to have no political agenda, and he allows himself to be constrained by the facts. Stone’s more interested in celebrating the efforts of the heroes — the hundreds upon hundreds of first responders who lost their lives trying to evacuate the airplane-damaged buildings prior to the collapse — and the heroes who later ventured into the impossibly thick billow of dust and smoke, onto a landscape of twisted steel and broken stone, to find anyone — anyone — who might have survived.
Once McLoughlin and Jimeno are found, there’s the problem of getting them out at great personal risk. But these men — Marines, firefighters, paramedics, police officers — are fearless, fueled by an internal, instant camaraderie, and a instinctive need to do what they do best: good.
”Sept. 11 showed us what human beings are capable of,” says Cage in a voice-over at the movie’s end. ”The evil, sure. But it also showed us the goodness.” It is that goodness Stone — a filmmaker who has been turning over rocks for much of his career examining the unsavory, squiggly things beneath — wants to commemorate most. And it’s a goodness largely forgotten as we’ve gotten past that day.
World Trade Center serves as a reminder that we should never forget the goodness. Because good is what defines the heart, the soul, the essence of America. Let’s pray it won’t take another 9/11 to let that goodness shine bright again.

Gameplay Updates
I’m sorry, games have taken over my fandom understanding a little of late. I always thought that if I ever played games I’d one day write fanfiction for, I’d try to write the story mostly following my choices - and then do additional content for what might have happened *boom, butterfly effect.’ So, with that in mind, here’s where games currently stand for main characters (I’ve bolded who my favourite characters were from the beginning, scored through those who died and put how under the cut).

Kara - Shot while protecting Alice on the boat; shut down upon reaching the shore.
Luther - Shot when Kara protected Alice; pushed overboard.
*
Chris - Decapitated by a Wendigo (AKA, I was too slow at the very last minute and I hate quick time shooting events; the one that freaking mattered the most... I am not over this).
*
Paul - He was injured before the ceremony.
Nathan - Shot himself.
*
Conrad - Fell from a ladder (I panicked and pressed the wrong button on a QTE despite having turned them off because my controller was having a moment).
Junior - Shot himself because he was seeing things.
Olson - Heat attack.
*
Scott - Shot by Ethan.
*
Taylor - Killed by demon (Shooting events are like the worst in these situations; apparently when they don’t matter, I can mostly do them... Though, I could have sworn I was in the circle and pressed the button).
*
Eric - Fell from wall (I refused to cut the rope and apparently that was the wrong choice).
Rachel - Explosion (I forgot what protection measures Nick and Jason had put in place and sent her the wrong way... this is why I shouldn’t leave gaps when playing games).
*
Mark - Neck impaled by the back end of an axe (I was so close! Then I missed an aiming section because I didn’t realise where I was meant to aim for).
*
Sam – Was eaten in 2024 by Frank Stone while saving Linda.
Jamie – Cut in half trying to save Chris from portal.
Stan – Killed by Frank Stone with machete (I think he has to die in the chapter as the alternative appears to be Sam’s fate; then again, I did give him the talisman so maybe without that he can survive? I don’t know yet).
Augustine – Killed by the Entity (I think this has to happen; but then she came back as well, so does this count?).
Bonnie – Killed by Frank Stone with a hook (though, I don’t think there’s a way to stop this, but again I’ve not played it enough to find out so it gets added to the list).

Yes, his autograph is part of my character Actor autograph collection. I found this extensive biography online.
Lionel Jay Stander (January 11, 1908 – November 30, 1994) was an American actor in films, radio, theater, and television.
Lionel Stander was born in The Bronx, New York, to Russian-Jewish immigrants, the first of three children.
According to newspaper interviews with Stander, as a teenager, he appeared in the silent film MEN OF STEEL (1926), perhaps as an extra, since he is not listed in the credits.
During his one year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he appeared in the student productions The Muse of the Unpublished Writer, and The Muse and the Movies: A Comedy of Greenwich Village.
Stander's acting career began in 1928, as Cop and First Fairy in Him by E. E. Cummings, at the Provincetown Playhouse. He claimed that he got the roles because one of them required shooting craps, which he did well, and a friend in the company volunteered him. He appeared in a series of short-lived plays through the early 1930s, including The House Beautiful, which Dorothy Parker famously derided as "the play lousy".
In 1932, Stander landed his first credited film role in the Warner-Vitaphone short feature IN THE DOUGH (1932), with Fatty Arbuckle and Shemp Howard. He made several other shorts, the last being THE OLD GREY MAYOR (1935) with Bob Hope in 1935. That same year, he was cast in a feature, Ben Hecht's THE SCOUNDREL (1935), with Noël Coward. He moved to Hollywood and signed a contract with Columbia Pictures. Stander was in a string of films over the next three years, appearing most notably in Frank Capra's MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN (1936) with Gary Cooper, MEET NERO WOLFE (1936) playing Archie Goodwin, THE LEAGUE OF FRIGHTENED MEN (1937), and A STAR IS BORN (1937) with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March.
Stander's distinctive rumbling voice, tough-guy demeanor, and talent with accents made him a popular radio actor. In the 1930s and 1940s, he was on The Eddie Cantor Show, Bing Crosby's KMH show, the Lux Radio Theater production of A Star Is Born, The Fred Allen Show, the Mayor of the Town series with Lionel Barrymore and Agnes Moorehead, Kraft Music Hall on NBC, Stage Door Canteen on CBS, the Lincoln Highway Radio Show on NBC, and The Jack Paar Show, among others.
In 1941, he starred in a short-lived radio show called The Life of Riley on CBS, no relation to the radio, film, and television character later made famous by William Bendix. Stander played the role of Spider Schultz in both Harold Lloyd's film THE MILKY WAY (1936) and its remake ten years later, THE KID FROM BROOKLYN (1946), starring Danny Kaye. He was a regular on Danny Kaye's zany comedy-variety radio show on CBS (1946–1947), playing himself as "just the elevator operator" amidst the antics of Kaye, future Our Miss Brooks star Eve Arden, and bandleader Harry James.
Also during the 1940s, he played several characters on The Woody Woodpecker and Andy Panda animated theatrical shorts, produced by Walter Lantz. For Woody Woodpecker, he provided the voice of Buzz Buzzard, but was blacklisted from the Lantz studio in 1951 and was replaced by Dal McKennon.
Strongly liberal and pro-labor, Stander espoused a variety of social and political causes and was a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild. At a SAG meeting held during a 1937 studio technicians' strike, he told the assemblage of 2000 members: "With the eyes of the whole world on this meeting, will it not give the Guild a black eye if its members continue to cross picket lines?" (The NYT reported: "Cheers mingled with boos greeted the question.") Stander also supported the Conference of Studio Unions in its fight against the Mob-influenced International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). Also in 1937, Ivan F. Cox, a deposed officer of the San Francisco longshoremen's union, sued Stander and a host of others, including union leader Harry Bridges, actors Fredric March, Franchot Tone, Mary Astor, James Cagney, Jean Muir, and director William Dieterle. The charge, according to Time magazine, was "conspiring to propagate Communism on the Pacific Coast, causing Mr. Cox to lose his job".
In 1938, Columbia Pictures head Harry Cohn allegedly called Stander "a Red son of a bitch" and threatened a US$100,000 fine against any studio that renewed his contract. Despite critical acclaim for his performances, Stander's film work dropped off drastically. After appearing in 15 films in 1935 and 1936, he was in only six in 1937 and 1938. This was followed by just six films from 1939 through 1943, none made by major studios, the most notable being GUADALCANAL DIARY (1943).
Stander was among the first group of Hollywood actors to be subpoenaed before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1940 for supposed Communist activities. At a grand jury hearing in Los Angeles in August 1940—the transcript of which was shortly released to the press—John R. Leech, the self-described former "chief functionary" of the Communist Party in Los Angeles, named Stander as a CP member, along with more than 15 other Hollywood notables, including Franchot Tone, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Clifford Odets, and Budd Schulberg. Stander subsequently forced himself into the grand jury hearing, and the district attorney cleared him of the allegations.
Stander appeared in no films between 1944 and 1945. Then, with HUAC's attention focused elsewhere due to World War II, he played in a number of mostly second-rate pictures from independent studios through the late 1940s. These include Ben Hecht's SPECTER OF THE ROSE (1946); the Preston Sturges comedy THE SIN OF HAROLD DIDDLEBOCK (1947) with Harold Lloyd; and TROUBLE MAKERS (1948) with The Bowery Boys. One classic emerged from this period of his career, the Preston Sturges comedy UNFAITHFULLY YOURS (1948) with Rex Harrison.
In 1947, HUAC turned its attention once again to Hollywood. That October, Howard Rushmore, who had belonged to the CPUSA in the 1930s and written film reviews for the Daily Worker, testified that writer John Howard Lawson, whom he named as a Communist, had "referred to Lionel Stander as a perfect example of how a Communist should not act in Hollywood." Stander was again blacklisted from films, though he played on TV, radio, and in the theater.
In March 1951, actor Larry Parks, after pleading with HUAC investigators not to force him to "crawl through the mud" as an informer, named several people as Communists in a "closed-door session", which made the newspapers two days later. He testified that he knew Stander, but did not recall attending any CP meetings with him.
At a HUAC hearing in April 1951, actor Marc Lawrence named Stander as a member of his Hollywood Communist "cell", along with screenwriter Lester Cole and screenwriter Gordon Kahn. Lawrence testified that Stander "was the guy who introduced me to the party line", and that Stander said that by joining the CP, he would "get to know the dames more" — which Lawrence, who did not enjoy film-star looks, thought a good idea. Upon hearing of this, Stander shot off a telegram to HUAC chair John S. Wood, calling Lawrence's testimony that he was a Communist "ridiculous" and asked to appear before the Committee, so he could swear to that under oath. The telegram concluded: "I respectfully request an opportunity to appear before you at your earliest possible convenience. Be assured of my cooperation." Two days later, Stander sued Lawrence for $500,000 for slander. Lawrence left the country ("fled", according to Stander) for Europe.
After that, Stander was blacklisted from TV and radio. He continued to act in theater roles and played Ludlow Lowell in the 1952-53 revival of Pal Joey on Broadway and on tour.
Two years passed before Stander was issued the requested subpoena. Finally, in May 1953, he testified at a HUAC hearing in New York, where he made front-page headlines nationwide by being uproariously uncooperative, memorialized in the Eric Bentley play, Are You Now or Have You Ever Been. The New York Times headline was "Stander Lectures House Red Inquiry." In a dig at bandleader Artie Shaw, who had tearfully claimed in a Committee hearing that he had been "duped" by the Communist Party, Stander testified,
"I am not a dupe, or a dope, or a moe, or a schmoe...I was absolutely conscious of what I was doing, and I am not ashamed of anything I said in public or private."
An excerpt from that statement was engraved in stone for "The First Amendment Blacklist Memorial" by Jenny Holzer at the University of Southern California.
Other notable statements during Stander's 1953 HUAC testimony:
- "[Testifying before HUAC] is like the Spanish Inquisition. You may not be burned, but you can't help coming away from a little singed."
- "I don't know about the overthrow of the government. This committee has been investigating 15 years so far, and hasn't found one act of violence."
- "I know of a group of fanatics who are desperately trying to undermine the Constitution of the United States by depriving artists and others of life, liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness without due process of law ... I can tell names and cite instances and I am one of the first victims of it. And if you are interested in that and also a group of ex-fascists and America-Firsters and anti-Semites, people who hate everybody including Negroes, minority groups and most likely themselves ... and these people are engaged in a conspiracy outside all the legal processes to undermine the very fundamental American concepts upon which our entire system of democracy exists."
- "...I don't want to be responsible for a whole stable of informers, stool pigeons, and psychopaths and ex-political heretics, who come in here beating their breast and say, 'I am awfully sorry; I didn't know what I was doing. Please--I want absolution; get me back into pictures.'"
- "My estimation of this committee is that this committee arrogates judicial and punitive powers which it does not possess."
Stander was blacklisted from the late 1940s until 1965; perhaps the longest period.
After that, Stander's acting career went into a free fall. He worked as a stockbroker on Wall Street, a journeyman stage actor, a corporate spokesman—even a New Orleans Mardi Gras king. He didn't return to Broadway until 1961 (and then only briefly in a flop) and to film in 1963, in the low-budget THE MOVING FINGER (although he did provide, uncredited, the voice-over narration for the 1961 noir thriller BLAST OF SILENCE.)
Life improved for Stander when he moved to London in 1964 to act in Bertolt Brecht's Saint Joan of the Stockyards, directed by Tony Richardson, for whom he'd acted on Broadway, along with Christopher Plummer, in a 1963 production of Brecht's The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. In 1965, he was featured in the film PROMISE HER ANYTHING. That same year Richardson cast him in the black comedy about the funeral industry, THE LOVED ONE, based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh, with an all-star cast including Jonathan Winters, Robert Morse, Liberace, Rod Steiger, Paul Williams, and many others. In 1966, Roman Polanski cast Stander in his only starring role, as the thug Dickie in CUL-DE-SAC, opposite Françoise Dorléac and Donald Pleasence.
Stander stayed in Europe and eventually settled in Rome, where he appeared in many spaghetti Westerns, most notably playing a bartender named Max in Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. He played the role of the villainous mob boss in Fernando Di Leo's 1972 poliziottescho thriller CALIBER 9. In Rome he connected with Robert Wagner, who cast him in an episode of It Takes a Thief that was shot there. Stander's few English-language films in the 1970s include THE GANG THAT COULDN'T SHOOT STRAIGHT (1971) with Robert De Niro and Jerry Orbach, Martin Scorsese's NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977), which also starred De Niro and Liza Minnelli, and Steven Spielberg's 1941 (1979).
Stander played a supporting role in the TV film Revenge Is My Destiny with Chris Robinson. He played a lounge comic modeled after the real-life Las Vegas comic Joe E. Lewis, who used to begin his act by announcing "Post Time" as he sipped his ever-present drink.
After 15 years abroad, Stander moved back to the U.S. for the role he is now most famous for: Max, the loyal butler, cook, and chauffeur to the wealthy, amateur detectives played by Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers on the 1979–1984 television series Hart to Hart (and a subsequent series of Hart to Hart made-for-television films). In 1983, Stander won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film.
In 1986, he became the voice of Kup in THE TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE. In 1991 he was a guest star in the television series Dream On, playing Uncle Pat in the episode "Toby or Not Toby". His final theatrical film role was as a dying hospital patient in THE LAST GOOD TIME (1994), with Armin Mueller-Stahl and Olivia d'Abo, directed by Bob Balaban.
Stander was married six times, the first time in 1932 and the last in 1972. All but the last marriage ended in divorce. He fathered six daughters (one wife had no children, one had twins).
Stander died of lung cancer in Los Angeles, California, in 1994 at age 86. He was buried in Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

❤️ Virgo Moon (♍︎☽) + Taurus Moon (♉︎☽) :
Virgo Moon and Taurus Moon are extremely compatible. They have a great deal of respect and understanding for each other. Taurus is stable and pragmatic; Virgo is practical and attends to detail. They are made for each other. Both partners are cautious and approach new things slowly. They both enjoy working with nature and natural materials. Both are concerned about how change will affect them.Their differences lie in how they react. While Taurus Moon will forge ahead once they commit to an idea, Virgo Moon will constantly second guess and criticize their choice. The worrying done by Virgo will be comforted by Taurus’ steadiness and emotional stability. Taurus, in turn, helps Virgo to relax and become more instinctual. Virgo Moon may become annoyed with the lackadaisical way that Taurus Moon leaves things all over the house. Overall, however, this is a happy and content pairing. They meet each others’ needs for intimacy and pleasant company. They will be most content in the country or if they are able to grow a garden or at least go camping frequently. They have a need to interact with nature in some way. This pairing should do very well with minimal effort.
❤️ Virgo Moon (♍︎☽) + Capricorn Moon (♑︎☽):
Virgo Moon and Capricorn Moon are the best of friends the moment they meet. They can’t believe their luck in finding someone who shares so many things in common. They are highly compatible, and this relationship should work out well for all concerned. Both Virgo Moon and Capricorn Moon are organized and practical. They both work hard and want to be useful. Both are willing to forego their own desires and feelings in lieu of responsibilities. They are self-disciplined and meticulous. They are faithful, constant and don’t like risks. They will happily tread the safe, logical path to financial security. Together they can have a very powerful connection. Others may view them as boring, but they feel secure and happy. They need to make sure they don’t expect too much of themselves. With their self-critical tendencies, they can undermine their own work. They do need to be wary of overwork. All work and no play will make even Virgo Moon and Capricorn Moon dull. If they can learn to relax and enjoy themselves as well as maintain their responsibilities, they will be extremely happy.

With the Moon in the practical and systematic sign of Virgo, you are likely to be someone who is highly appreciative of structure, organization and detail. You will find your life works better with well-established systems in your personal and professional life. Virgo is an Earth sign, and so pertains to tangible or physical things. It is also known as a Mutable sign, which infers a need for variety and change. When practicality and change are brought together, the principle of refinement is found. Born with the Moon in Virgo, you are likely to have an innate need to improve or refine the circumstances around you – combining practical know-how with the analytical quality necessary to achieve specific results. Virgo is a sign of service. You are likely to find you have an innate need to nurture yourself and others through offering practical service in everyday ways. Virgo is also a sign of humility. You may be quite happy working behind the scenes, adding your considerable talent for organization to whatever you are involved in and happy to be of service, often asking nothing in return. The satisfaction of a job well-conceived, well-planned and well-done often provides the result you need. You should take care, however, not to allow this natural instinct for service to be manipulated, or taken advantage of by others. Ancient astrologers saw a relationship between the sign of Virgo and the condition of slavery. It is important that your need to be useful does not turn into the need to be someone else’s “pack-horse”. The Moon refers to how we need to be nurtured. You will find a tendency to feel safe or secure through knowing that things are tidy, structured and planned. Routine is your friend, and establishing well-ordered routines in your daily life will help you think more clearly. Virgo is associated with process and purification at both material and mental levels. You are likely to be emotionally affected by how well your daily systems are functioning and how ‘pure’ life conditions are. At a simple level, you are likely to feel awkward and uncomfortable in chaotic environments. You will feel more serene and so focussed in an organized space. At a more subtle level, you can be emotionally affected by food additives, pollutants and synthetics in your environment. This is not to say that you are ‘precious’ or need to be wrapped in cotton wool. It is just that you will feel impurities more acutelythan others. Above all else, you need a calm, peaceful and well ordered environment to access your astute thinking processes. You are nurtured by organization and structure. You assimilate information better when processes are clear, and sources of nourishment relatively clean. This is a sign of mental discrimination. You may have innate talents for editing or discernment, able to describe other people’s traits, dispositions and downfalls. Thus you may have strong writing abilities, or work well in fields involving communication, personal service and customer relations. You are likely to have a keen mind, and a great eye for detail. This can be turned to its’ full advantage by seeking occupations that allow you to capitalize on your ability to spot the ‘bottom line’. You are likely to be very good at extracting the essence from something otherwise complicated. You have the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff, and find what is essential in a sentence, task list or schedule. Because of your strong analytical ability,  you may need to make sure that you watch your tendency to be overly critical, finding fault with yourself and others rather than working toward improving whatever situation you are in. Your capacity for analysis is great for problem-solving, but can also be your downfall.  You are likely to be highly adaptable, but also prone to excessive worry. You can easily fall victim to nervous tension by constantly finding faults or remaining in chaotic environments that go against your instinctual needs. It is important that you learn to take time out when needed, and find ways to remedy the effects of too much nervous tension. Meditation, yoga, martial arts and other forms of mind-body exercise can be especially beneficial. This will greatly assist you to stay focussed and calm.Often, those with the Moon here can be quietly critical of self and others. Your tendency to criticize your own efforts may make it difficult for you to see your own true worth. You may underestimate your contributions and be innately convinced that whatever you do, it is not good enough. This can be a humble and shy position for the Moon. Unless other factors in your chart offer more outgoing tendencies, you may fail to receive credit for all that you have achieved. It is important that you learn to recognize how useful you are. Next time you are concerned that you have not ‘done enough’ simply ask yourself if you have improved the situation you are in. Rather than striving to be perfect, you will find that striving to make things better satisfies your need to be useful, and helps you take unrealistic expectations off yourself. On another level, Virgo is associated with the body and health. Thus, you may have an instinctual interest in matters of health, diet and nutrition. You may be naturally quite healthy simply because you have an interest in your own wellbeing, and notice that life flows better for you with regular exercise and good eating habits. It is very important that you to pay close attention to what you do, and do not, eat. Often, those with the Moon here have very delicate digestive and nervous systems. You are likely to find that you may have trouble with your stomach or nerves if you lose touch with your own bodily needs. Excess worry or problems with digestion may plague you if you do not pay attention to what you ingest. Taking in pure food (as well as experiences) is a very practical thing for you. You can be adversely affected by processed foods, and overcome with anxiety if exposed to harsh or critical people. Making sure you improve the systems that regulate your own personal life is essential for you. Through good food, routine and regular exercise you can enjoy extraordinarily good health This interest in health is often quite strong. You may have natural abilities in any area to do withhealth, nutrition and healing, especially in the area of natural therapies, herbs and pharmacology. Often those with the Moon here are drawn to service roles such as nursing and community work. Finding ways to be useful is important. Any activity that lets you combine your innate practicality, fine mind, and willingness to help can work well for you, leading to beneficial outcomes for all concerned. Individuals with the moon in Virgo are usually simple in nature and prefer to live a quiet life without the glare of public eye. They look for small things in their life to seek happiness and contentment. It is the small and insignificant matters in life like plucking flowers from a garden that give them real happiness. It is in their basic nature to not only take care of themselves, but to take care of others as well. Thus, such individuals are of extremely helpful nature and will be first to lend a helping hand to those in distress. These individuals love to have a routine in their life. They cannot do without a routine and if it is missing in their lives, they tend to feel that something is amiss in their life and they are not in their true elements due to it. They tend to act in a fussy manner and are often labelled as complainers as they cannot function properly without having a routine in their life. Due to such characteristics, they love to take on such jobs or tasks in which lot of detailing is required or which has a great scope for micromanagement of things and situations. Such individuals are always averse to public displays of affection and most of the times get repulsed because of that. Such individuals tend to be shy in meeting up new people. However, once they get to know them and gradually open up, they are in their own elements and strike a good rapport with them. Additionally, they are born sceptics in nature and tend to be over critical of themselves as well.

Born with the Moon in the lively, communication-oriented sign of Gemini, you are likely to be a curious individual, with an active, versatile mind. Gemini is an Air sign, governing communication, the exchange of information or ideas, and the protocols with which social organization occurs. Accordingly, you may find that you have an innate need to know as much as possible about the world around you, and may have a talent for numbers, speech or the written word. Gemini is also a Mutable sign, implying the need for variety and change. You are likely to find that you are easily engaged in new things, seek stimulation and may become easily bored. You are likely to be very adaptable, and love anything new. You may be an instinctive multi-tasker, and may habitually involve yourself in many tasks at the same time. Your need for variety means you are better when doing several things at once, but need to avoid scattering your mental energies so that very little actually gets done.  The essence of this sign is communication. Unless other factors in your birth chart dominate, you are likely to enjoy sharing information with others, and may be very talkative. You may find yourself involved with lots of different people, flitting from group to group, situation to situation, in order to exchange information and ideas. Information is the foundation of your emotional wellbeing. You are likely to feel at your best when actively engaged in learning something new. For you, information is paramount, and you may not need to study something in depth to feel that you know enough about it. As long as you have glimpsed the basis of an idea or opinion, you may then feel satisfied to move on. Like the literal social butterfly, you may find yourself moving from person to person, gathering data, ideas information or facts before moving on to share what you have gained. You need to know about what is going on around you, and will enjoy imparting to others the information they may need to get through the day. Sometimes, this love of information can extend to gossip. You may have a weakness for scandals, trivia and trashy magazines! You like to know what is happening in other peoples lives. This works well for you when your love of knowledge stimulates good conversation and an interest in the world around you. When taken to extremes, a love of gossip can work against you. You may find that you inadvertently develop a reputation for being fickle, two-faced or unreliable. Others may know you cannot be trusted to keep a secret, and so will exclude you from the true details of their personal lives. Or you may attract to yourself persons who thrive on discussing the misfortunes of others. This can create a negative backlash that will ultimately bring you undone. Discretion is an important trait to develop when born with the Moon in this sign. Because you are interested in everything does not mean you have the right to spread it around! This is a very inquisitive position for the Moon. In many ways, you experience a sense of personal worth by connecting to other people, talking to them about their problems and concerns, and finding out what makes them tick. You are less likely to be concerned with deep emotional intricacies as you are with the peculiarities of their life circumstances or perspectives. Once you have ascertained where someone is coming from and why, you are likely to then feel compelled to move on to someone else, having satisfied your need to exchange information, so entering another “data file” into your catalogue of human experiences. Your interest in others is indeed genuine. You may just find you have an almost unquenchable need to know more. In essence, you will need to find a balance between your need for information, and your ability to connect with others on more than superficial terms. As the Moon is also concerned with nurturing, you may have a special ability to make others feel good with what you say. Because you know how to nurture with words, you may know the right thing to say at just the right moment to get others feeling light and bright again. Gemini is a sign known for humour and entertainment. You may instinctively know how to keep things fun. Talking around the surface of things stop them getting heavy. You are likely to have an uncanny ability to turn the conversation around when needed to the brighter side of life. You are probably very good at defining emotions. You have the ability to categorize experiences based on objective fact, but may be less comfortable actually feeling what is happening. In this sense, you may attempt to avoid deep emotional experiences, feeling more certain of yourself with rational or logical discussion where you can analyze a certain situation, classify it, and move on. In time, you will need to learn to deepen your emotional experiences, so that you can learn why certain emotions occur. Rather than detaching from emotional involvement, you may find that experiencing emotion, then adding logic, helps broaden your social repertoire. As the Moon rules the instincts, you may have instinctual talents with words and numbers. You may be good at keeping score, at accounting, or any form of commerce. You may also have a love for trade, enjoying the hustle and bustle that goes along with bartering and retail. You may have a love of gadgets, and be drawn to anything bright, shiny and new. You may be an instinctive flirt, and love flitting from one admirer to the next. This Moon position is often associated with those whose main concern is with the external world, exchanging facts, ideas and commodities without getting too consumed by the deeper, or more mysterious, dimensions of life. This is fine, as long as it does not preclude you from acknowledging that you are also an emotional being, with passionate needs that also need expression. Then your love of logic can be balanced with a well-rounded interpersonal life. At its best, Gemini is a lively and versatile sign. Born with the Moon here, you are likely to have a quick and adaptable mind. Your interest in whatever is happening around you means that you will feel an ever-present need to “know”. Once you have discovered something, you will want to share it with those around. Upon this foundation, your need for communication grows. Emotional balance comes from being connected to your immediate environment and having other people in your life. The need for variety and change is usually strong here, and you will seek multiple experiences and projects to keep you on the go. Your curiosity can be both an endless source of discovery and a good deal of personal charm. Connected with others, you can share what you have learned. Moving from situation to situation generates feelings of newness and excitement that will always give you something interesting to talk about.

Born with the Moon in Scorpio, you are likely to be sensitive and loyal, but have intense emotional needs. Scorpio is a Water sign, which relates to the emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions of life. You are likely to give the impression of being perceptive, powerful, and transformational. Scorpio is also a Fixed sign, suggesting that when you align your emotions with something you desire – be that a friend/lover or an anticipated outcome – you will be constant, enduring and unwilling to let go. For you, a sense of emotional wellbeing comes from having close and truthful connections with others which allow you to explore the life’s depths. Depending on other influences in your chart, you are also likely to be a passionate individual with a real capacity to connect on an emotional level. You will seek intimacy in your relationships, and demand loyalty in return. The sensitivity and depth of your nature means you are likely to have intense reactions to emotional stimuli. Scorpio is not an easy place for the Moon to be. The Moon is traditionally considered in her “fall” here, suggesting certain challenges around how lunar (emotional) qualities are expressed. Because the quality of your emotions – their strength and potential power – can be so intense, they can at times be overwhelming. Early on in life, you may find yourself swinging between extremes, like you are riding a rollercoaster of emotional peaks and troughs. You feel acutely every dimension of life. You will do best if you remember not to collapse yourself into your emotions, or believe that just because an emotion has intensity, it must be acted upon. Part of your nature requires that you learn to allow strong feelings to flow through you, without being overwhelmed by them. With time, and as greater self-awareness develops, you will learn to understand the depths of your emotions by taking time for introspection. You can gain great insight into yourself and others by developing a true sensitivity to the complexity of emotional needs. As you understand the depth of your own nature, you learn to recognize the true motivations in others as well.  Scorpio is also a sign of privacy. You are likely to prefer playing your cards ‘close to your chest’. Rather than letting everybody know exactly what you are experiencing, you learn to keep your true feelings to yourself. Even those nearest to you may have no idea of the depth of emotional storms besieging you, and the relief that comes when the clear light of understanding eventually shines through. To harness your potential for emotional insight and connectedness you should learn to spend time “going within”. You feel intensely, for better or for worse. This can at times make you seem vulnerable, but in truth you are likely to possess great strength. Your emotional nature combines sensitivity with the instinctual awareness that real growth only happens through episodes of pain and transformation. No stranger to this truth, you are likely to prefer to see things for what they are – both in yourself and in other people. You are likely to have a highly developed ability to sense the emotional undercurrents around you, and prefer dealing with the raw truth at any cost. You have a knack for pinpointing what you, and others, really want or need in a situation – which may be confronting – but always brings the truth to light. Through confronting things for what they really are, you bring this light into your own and others lives. By entering and resolving emotional crises, you generate greater emotional or spiritual freedom for yourself and other people. There may be a tendency to try and protect your vulnerability, hiding the true depths of what you really feel. The tendency to suppress or hide your emotions can go both ways. On the one hand, you may try to detach from uncomfortable emotions, and avoid circumstances that will really get you to feel. You may protect yourself from close encounters with others, and find emotional release through fictional or fantasy-based sources. Or, you may attempt to control and dominate others with moodiness, lashing out at them before they can “get to you”. Defence can be used as a form of offence to prevent others discovering how sensitive and vulnerable you really are. Either way, you end up missing the benefit of true intimacy by not letting others share in how you feel. You need to develop trust in others by letting them into your life. This means listening to your own intuition, and choosing the right confidantes to share the real depths of your immensely loving heart. For you, the exchange of emotional energy makes living worthwhile. A need to be close and connect to others is likely to be a constant theme in your life. Through sharing your substantial emotional resources, you uncover the truth about yourself. At the same time, you expose yourself to deeper levels of power and vulnerability. This process of self-exposure is what you need, and ultimately leads you to a form of inner transformation that can only happen through trust and mutual intimacy. The goal for those born with a Scorpio Moon is to develop deeper levels of closeness in life. Through relationships you understand the world around and your place in it. By connecting and sharing with others, inner peace is found. Accordingly, this lunar position is excellent for anything which requires an understanding other peoples’ motives and drives. A natural psychologist, you will be adept at sensing what others really need. You can do well in any field that involves ‘reading’ others. How clearly you do this will have much to do with what you are prepared to face in yourself. By exploring your own dark cupboards you learn to sense what others keep in theirs. This placement calls for great emotional honesty; an all-or-nothing preparedness to live from a position of power and truth. Your greatest gift is your ability to bring light into your own and others’ lives by seeing things for what they really are. You help others transform what needs redeeming through accepting themselves as they are.If you fail to live from a place of honesty, then you could display the more negative or poisonous potential of the Moon in Scorpio. Overwhelmed by your own vulnerability, you could seek to destroy others. You may (unconsciously or not) try to take others down, rather than face the darkness within yourself. You may find yourself exposing flaws and manipulating weaknesses as a way to inflict pain. If this happens, you need to transform first the pain in your own life before involving yourself with others and having an influence on what they do with theirs. At the highest level, Moon in Scorpio gives you the ability to transform your own and others lives. You can act as an agent for change, becoming a catalyst for greater growth and awareness. You can help others shift their psychological values. The potential power contained here is enormous. You have the opportunity to be a force for good. Valuing your own and others privacy, you can be trusted to keep a confidence, and have a rare kind of understanding that is born from simply accepting things for what they are. You can be the one others turn to with their deepest secrets and most hidden pain. When you let them share their stories, you help them heal their pain. When you talk to them truthfully abut you feel is going on you can help them find a path to transformation. With your awareness of the depths of human nature and empathy for others, you can bear witness, offer counsel and help others renew themselves. With the moon in Scorpio, individuals are emotionally intense with an aura of mystery constantly surrounding them. They own the characteristic of deciphering the emotional state of anyone and possess the capability to look through anyone’s emotions and feelings. Due to this quality, others consider them as enigmatic people who manage to achieve such a feat accurately constantly. They have a continued requirement for change and excitement. They normally wish for excitement and continued drama in their lives and thrive on emotional drama. Scorpio-born go out in securing their relationships, and they certainly don’t believe in half measures. They never waste their time in meaningless relationships as they long for total commitment from their partners. With the moon in Scorpio, individuals have a dynamic and attractive personality and their entire character is filled with mystery which often draws others to them. They possess a gift of intuition, and strive extremely hard to control their intense emotions. However, for their own gains, they tend to use this gift of intuition. In the occult and the unusual, these individuals tend to have a strong interest. By their very nature, they are amazingly creative beings. Overall, these individuals are charismatic in nature and attract one and all with their mysterious aura. Attitude wise, the Scorpio-born is non conformist individual, and aren’t bothered to adhere to the norms set by the society.

By connecting and sharing with others, inner peace is found.Accordingly, this lunar position is excellent for anything which requires an understanding other peoples’ motives and drives.

With the Moon in the sign of Taurus, you are likely to have an innate need for security and comfort. Taurus is an Earth sign, and so pertains to the tangible, material aspects of life. You are likely to find that you relate easily to the physical plane, and find much comfort in what you can see, hear, smell, touch and taste. Taurus is also a Fixed sign, implying constancy, patience and perseverance. This suggests that you will by drawn to circumstances which are predictable, concrete and well-established. Preferring to know the ground upon which you stand, you are likely to seek the comfort of tangible outcomes, and the security of knowing what can or cannot be maintained. In essence, it is usually quite fortunate to be born when the Moon is in this sign. Here, the lunar energies are particularly strong, owing to the special connection between the Moon and Taurus. Astrologers describe the Moon as “exalted” in Taurus, which means the qualities of fecundity, nurturing, sustenance and fertility are most easily expressed. If you are born with the Moon here, you have a greater opportunity to be in touch with your fundamental needs, together with the practicality to know how to achieve them. Often, those born when the Moon is in Taurus find it easy to enjoy the pleasures of life, coupled with an uncanny ability to somehow attract them. On this point, those born with the Moon here rarely find themselves going without. It is almost as if you have the capacity to magically attract exactly what you need. You may find that you somehow always have enough, or just when you start to feel the need for something, it synchronistically appears. For maximum effect, you should share these resources with others. With the Moon in Taurus, you will find that the more you share with others, the more you will get. Rather than coming from a place of fear – thinking you have to hold onto what you have – your best approach is to see money or resources as simply a concrete manifestation of life force. Allowing this energy to flow through you generates greater abundance in return. You experience more comfort in life when you share comfort with others, and from this position, will probably never be without. The Moon in Taurus gives you the intuitive capacity to unconsciously manifest the resources and experiences you need to feel comfortable. Comfort is a key issue, and with the Moon here, you are likely to find that you need comfort and security in order to feel emotionally centered. This is not to say that you are innately materialistic. You just know that life flows better for you when you are materially secure. Emotional stability is reflected in your attitude toward material possessions. Knowing how to appreciate quality, you will be instinctively drawn to finer things. You may not feel that you need to hold onto them, but you will understand that your ability to appreciate the best in life is a reflection of your self-worth. Self-worth is connected to material security. You will notice that you tend to feel emotionally secure when you know you are taking care of yourself, as well as others. You are likely to be instinctually aware of possessions (or their lack) and this will reflect greatly on how you view your self. For you, self esteem and possessions are intimately linked. It is not that you have to have material things to feel that you are worthwhile, but more an innate sense that life is there to be enjoyed, so that when you allow yourself the pleasures of life, you demonstrate a level of self-care that creates emotional fulfillment. You may be happy with just a bowl of rice and a blanket, but will truly understand that life is greatly enhanced when the rice is nutritious and the blanket of good quality. The best way to nurture yourself is by ensuring that you have this quality and comfort in your life. This is not to say that you are greedy or possessive. In fact, the opposite is usually the case. Because you can easily attract to yourself what you need, you tend to learn early on that life is even better when you share what you have. On an emotional level, you are likely to be warm, generous and giving. You will enjoy nurturing others with the fine things you have found. How demonstrative you are will depend on other factors in your chart, but as a bottom line, you are probably extremely generous and dependable. A loyal and devoted friend, you are also likely to be a giving and reliable partner. Because you are innately connected to the physical plane, you will have a heightened awareness of the body and its senses. You can easily find comfort through sensual things, and are likely to have a heightened appreciation for physical pleasure. Massage, body care, fragrances, good food or high-quality materials are likely to appeal to you. You will be deeply anchored in your physical body and enjoy all the pleasures that the senses can bring. A great way to nurture yourself is by connecting with the sense and taking time out to balance yourself through physical experiences. Taurus is a sign of great stability, patience and perseverance. You are likely to be seen by others as generally reliable, gentle and calm. Because your unconscious reactions rest on solid ground, you tend to weather the storms of life with less upset than more volatile types. As long as there is comfort and security in your life, you feel fine. Therefore, you need to experience the warmth and security of loving relationships so that you can express your need to share life. Taking care of others is a great source of satisfaction. Helping them to experience and appreciate the quality of life gives you much joy. This stability, however, may have another side. There may be a tendency toward stubbornness or fixed emotional patterns, though this would only be likely if other chart factors added to the famed Taurean tendency to get stuck in a rut. On the whole, you are probably easy-going, generous and gentle, seeking peace, harmony and beauty in life. At the same time, you are able to attract what you need because of your cooperative nature. If at times you do display the more negative emotional qualities of jealousy and possessiveness also attached to this sign, it is usually because you have been pushed to that point by others, or through extra factors within your chart which heighten such tendencies. If stubbornness rears its head in you, then you simply have to ask yourself do you really have to hold on to what you think you do, or are you simply experiencing a state of fear? All in all, this is one of the nicest placements for the Moon. You are likely to manifest abundance, creativity and sensual comfort in your life because such experiences are to be cherished and enjoyed. Your need to take care of yourself well should ideally be reflected in how you care for others. When you open to the flow of abundance in your own life, you bring similar rewards to others. Finally, a word of warning might be said about the tendency (in fact, the emotional need) toward indulgence and comfort. Overindulgence is a real possibility, especially if the Moon links up with Jupiter, so you should be careful to avoid excess in food, drink or just lazing around. Your love of comfort can easily turn to excess and accumulation at later stages of life. Gaining weight or becoming emotionally bogged down is a sign of too much indulgence, and should be countered by some form of activity, as well as frank honesty with yourself.

Leo is a Fire sign, and so pertains to spirit and inspiration. On an emotional level, you are likely to be warm, generous and innately confident. Leo is also a Fixed sign, implying constancy and perseverance. When you love, you love intensely. You can be counted on for your loyalty and level of support. The Fire signs are known for an abundance of energy, and you may be ever ready to shine this abundance of emotional warmth toward those you hold near and dear. The sign of Leo is ruled by the Sun, and associated with royalty. Thus, your emotions are likely to possess this solar quality, radiating to those you feel benevolent toward, and perhaps striking out fiercely against those who have lost your favour. You are likely to have an innate sense of dignity, and will expect a certain level of treatment and respect from others. As a sign of royalty, you may have fairly lavish tastes, and will feel most comfortable when surrounded by people and situations you feel reflect your inner image of yourself. On an instinctive level, you are likely to feel strong emotions. There is often a passionate intensity that needs to be expressed. Leo is a dramatic and creative sign. You may find that you are always seeking outlets to pour your creativity and personal expression into. You will always feel more energized when your natural spontaneity and exuberance can be expressed. This can range from traditional Leonine art forms that involve flamboyance and self-expression such as dance, drama and design. Or you may find your creativity is easily expressed working with children, or at the helm of a business where you  can see your ideas coming into form. You may find that the rituals of religion represent for you deep feelings of reverence and devotion which bring a creative dimension t your life. Whatever you do, you find your day is more colourful when you have some kind of creative outlet, and so finding ways to express yourself is likely to be important for you. Leo is a sign of romance. You may find that you specialize in dreaming up vibrant ways to show others that you care. You are likely to be someone who needs reassurance and affection to feel connected with another, and will look for ways to keep your romantic life alive.  It is important for you to form relationships with people who will shower you with affection and fun. At this level, it is very important that you find a partner who is demonstrative, and pays attention to your emotional needs. When partners take the time to make you feel special, then you can respond by sharing all your abundance of emotional warmth with them. Win-win scenarios ensue when you are treated with the affection you need, and give others the same in return. The sign of Leo is associated with children. You are likely to be in many ways a “kid at heart”. You will enjoy play, fun and spontaneity and can easily get along with children at their level. You may have an innate understanding of where children come from and what their real needs are. Spending time with children helps open up your own creativity and sense of fun. You may also find that life only feels complete for you when you find ways to express your ‘inner child’. Taking time out for fun and adventure is like medicine for you, and will be an important way of  finding ‘food for the soul”. Leo is also a sign of leadership. On an instinctual level, you may feel that you are here to lead others. Thus, you do best when you feel in control of situations. This is the sign of the organizer, and you may have an innate understanding of how to bring an event or opportunity together. You may a gift for social situations, and instinctively know how to bring the fun and flair into any setting. You have natural executive and leadership qualities that inspire others to follow you. When you lead from a place of confidence and fun, others will happily rally around your sunny disposition, wanting to follow you on the road to the next adventure. Your natural sense of fun and joy unites with your desire to do things well. You can encourage people to join forces and commit to a particular outcome, whilst at the same time enjoying the ride.   On another level, this sign is associated with pride. You are likely to have an innate pride in yourself and want to do things to the best of your ability. Pride can make you aim high and follow through on your commitments. But when you let this inherent sense of pride take over you, may develop the opinion that you are always right. You may have a tendency to being overly demanding, dismissive or controlling, insisting that you always get your own way. If you try to lead others by thinking only about your own needs or expectations then you will find they rebel. You will then have trouble balancing your innate need for recognition and approval with the fact that your team have turned their back on you. You must be careful not to let your natural sense of authority and dignity become self-centeredness and domination. This will lead to isolation, and the unhappy experience of not having other persons around you to share your creative ideas and abundant emotional energy. At its’ heart, Leo is a sensitive and impressionable sign. You are easily hurt when you don’t get the recognition that you feel you deserve. Moon in Leo needs approval in order to keep the heart fires burning. You need to find ways to express yourself creatively, be with other people, and take up your natural leadership role. For this to happen, you must ensure you do not isolate anyone through snobbery, or make others subject to your, at times petty, emotional demands. Learning to recognize the extent of your passions, and then recognizing that others needs are just as “special” as your own will keep your feet on the ground, your heart in the right place and happy experiences flowing easily into your life.

Born with the Moon in Capricorn, you are likely to be innately responsible, pragmatic and measured in the ways that you respond. Capricorn is an Earth sign, and so pertains to the tangible and practical dimensions of life. It is also known as a Cardinal sign, which implies a need to take action. When practicality and activity combine, the urge to master material resources is usually present. With the Moon in Capricorn, you are likely to have an innately serious and responsible nature, seeking to make the most of whatever resources you have at your disposal. Responsibility, and all this entails, will probably form a background theme in your life. You may have had to step into a position of responsibility early in life, or received strong impressions from your parents (most usually mother) about the need to live up to certain expectations in life. You may feel a deep sense of duty around supporting others, and will naturally be drawn to areas of life expression which allow you to demonstrate a capacity to accept responsibility. You are likely to have the ability to assist and nurture others in practical ways, and will often be seen as “the capable one” who can be relied on to find realistic solutions to current problems. The Moon is said to be in “detriment” in this sign, implying that easy and spontaneous emotional connections are not your forte. You are likely to be self-conscious in your emotional approach, and may appear reserved at first, taking time to warm to others and develop closeness. While you may have a huge heart, you do not give it away easily. You need time to get to know others and work out how you really feel about them. It is important to understand how serious or worthwhile any emotional involvement may be before you get involved. Whilst to others this may seem calculating, for you it is just a realistic assessment of the fact that emotional ties can be burdensome, and taking yourself seriously involves assessing exactly where a situation is taking you, and if that is where you want to be. Yet this pragmatism can also be a source of strength. It can give you stability and create a realistic attitude to life’s emotional ebbs and flows. On the up side, this means that for those you hold near and dear, you will be consistent, strong and true. You have an innate ability to follow through on what you say, and are likely to value greatly the worth of family, continuity and emotional commitment. On the down side however, your pragmatic approach to feelings and relationships may lead to a tendency for projecting to others a cold and unavailable nature, concerned more with the bottom line of what you will ‘get’ from a connection, rather than just being able to enjoy closeness and intimacy for what it is. The sign of Capricorn relates to foundations, structures and the gift of Time. You are likely to value tradition, status, and social position. You will require from others the same level of responsibility and capacity that you demonstrate for yourself, and will respect people or situations that demonstrate longevity and persistence. On some level, you are likely to feel most secure when you have solid structures and foundations around you. To this end you may be somewhat conservative, with strong ambitions for yourself based on recognition and accomplishment. Achievements carry powerful emotional overtones for you, and you are likely to feel an inward need to live up to being the best that you can be. You may have a need to prove yourself ‘out there’ in the world as a concrete example of your inner values, so reflecting an aptitude for responsibility and commitment. Alternately, you may have a much more private idea of what success and accomplishment mean to you. You may be less concerned with worldly success and more concerned with doing the best you can on a more personal level. You may set high standards for personal development, with a profound sense of integrity and authenticity. Whether your focus is material or spiritual, you are likely to be committed to making sure that you achieve the things that you expect of yourself. If other features of your chart imply more freedom-loving or unconventional qualities, you may be at odds with other voices within your psyche. If you find yourself struggling between the need to fulfill obligations and the need to be free just remember that your innate capacity to commit and demonstrate responsibility can be expressed in many different ways. As long as you live up to your own expectations in terms of what responsibility means to you, you will feel emotionally stable and secure. From this stable base, you can spin off into any form of expression you so choose. You are likely to be highly self-sufficient and contained, but need to remember that sometimes we build strong emotional foundations by sharing our strengths and weaknesses, talents short-comings and abilities with those around us. You are no doubt very capable, but need to be mindful of a tendency to isolate yourself upon your own mountaintop of duty and responsibility. You may have an innate tendency to expect that no one else will be as thorough as you are, and so take on far more than you need to, at times even taking from others duties that are rightfully theirs. Try not to look down upon “mere mortals’ less capable than you, but realize that your strengths and capabilities have been earned through hard work and sacrifice, yet only count for something if you can share them with someone else. In sharing responsibilities, you will achieve the position of respect and responsibility that you so naturally deserve. In letting others demonstrate capability and endurance, you help build a fertile platform upon which material stability is achievedWith the Moon placed here, you are likely to be innately concerned with how you appear publicly. You tend to be aware of the value of reputation and protocol, and so, will avoid doing anything publicly that may diminish you in the eyes of others. Because you recognize the value of a good reputation, you will strive to appear capable, contained and in-charge. Whilst this is useful in terms of earning respect, it may mean that you avoid extending yourself at times because you will not let yourself learn. You can set such high standards of achievement for yourself that you expect to be able to master whatever you attempt almost as soon as you begin. Rather than learning through a process of trial and error, you will stop yourself doing things unless you are already innately competent. It is important that you recognize the need for learning or apprenticeship along the road to mastery. Showing others your vulnerabilities will not hurt you as much as you may fear, and can in fact help them appreciate your achievements more through seeing your commitment to high standards through hard work. Finally, there may also be a need to release old, crystallized emotional patterns or unconscious fears through subconscious re-programming. Because the Moon represents the genetic or emotional framework through which we view experiences and learn about the world, there may be a tendency to ‘get stuck’ when that frame is inclined to endure and ‘hold-on’. In this sense, unconscious fears, limitations and restrictions may prevent you from opening up to an easy, spontaneous flow of emotion. Old habits and memories can prevent you from connecting with the here and now. There may be inhibitions around revealing the true extent of your feelings, and you may keep others at a distance so they never know how much you really need them. Developing empathy, the ability to self-nurture and kindness for yourself are highly recommended, This will help dissolve any old and unwanted emotional patterns, and open the door for greater vulnerability and closeness with others. You may find tactile or emotional therapies useful for you if find this hard to achieve. Because you are used to demonstrating fortitude and resilience, you may find it hard to soften and let others in. But when you share your capacity to accept responsibility and build solid foundations in life, you are rewarded with full appreciation from those who can understand the depth of your emotional commitment.

Born with the Moon in the vibrant sign of Aries, you are likely to have a pronounced need for independence, as well as an assertive streak. Aries is a Fire sign, governing impulses, initiative and action. Accordingly, you are likely to feel at your best when you involved with exciting, challenging or new experiences – anything that lets you express your pioneering side. Aries is also a Cardinal sign, highlighting the need to act. You may experience yourself as a dynamic, pioneering individual, and enjoy getting things started – lifting them off the ground. Your need for independence suggests you may be happiest when left to do your own thing, and will detest being told what to do.This is a sign of emotional independence. You are likely to give, and expect, much stimulation, vibrancy and freedom from the people in your life. You may be quick to react, ready to forgive and but also easily hurt. You are likely to enjoy the space to be your own person, and will feel trapped if others try to limit you. You may also be uncomfortable with sentimental displays, or what you may deem as ‘weak’ expressions of emotion. You have an innate warrior-like quality which means you will prefer to deal directly with what is. Social niceties or protocols that mask the truth are usually not your cup of tea. You are likely to call ‘a spade a spade’, and be largely self-sufficient on an emotional level. You have the capacity to endure hardship and negation when it will suit your purposes, and usually expect others to do the same. Your ability to marshall your energies can be pronounced. You have a capacity to draw from an instinctive level the inner resources that you need.  When  you identify an objective that you wish to pursue, you can do so with an almost military-like precision, removing all distractions in your quest to attain your goal. You have the kind of temperament which thrives upon hard work and perseverance. The gusto with which you approach these goals can leave others in your wake. Yet you may have trouble finishing what you start, or compromising so as to include others needs. For these reasons, you may run in to difficulty with others who are unable to ‘marshal’ their energies as easily as you, or when negotiation is required. You will need to learn when it is time for you to do your own thing, versus time to include others. The influence of others features in your birth chart will reveal how easily this can be done. As a pioneer, you are likely to find that you are drawn to avenues of expression which allow you do your own thing. You may have a particular knack for recognizing the seed in an idea, the potential in an opportunity. Your emotional nature is likely to be such that you feel most invigorated or alive when you are starting something new. The energy needed to get something off the ground fires all your passion up, and gives you an immediate focus. You are likely to be responsive, impatient and enthusiastic, so suited to any kind of self-employment or contract opportunity. For some born with the Moon here, there will be entrepreneurial qualities, and you may feel frustrated in your life unless you have the chance to test your ideas on the market and see what else is possible to create. Aries is a sign of vision combined with action. You may need to find ways in your life to do your own thing, and are likely to resist others attempts to define you. Aries is considered the “infant of the Zodiac”, and you may have a peculiar blend of brashness, innocence and sensitivity which means you will say whatever is on your mind. Yet you can easily be hurt should others do the same. You are likely to be strongly affected by criticism and can be stopped in your tracks by unkind words. You may rush forward when feeling sure of yourself but fall in heap when others disagree. Like the proverbial Fool of the Tarot, you tend to leap in where angels fear to tread, possessing a courage to face the unknown which means you rarely question the road ahead. Your valiant spirit can be your best asset but also your Achilles heel. You may completely underestimate the calculated actions of those with a more complex emotional response, or you may unintentionally hurt others with your own ill-considered words. In this sense, you may be somewhat taken aback by those who are prepared to use underhanded or calculating methods, for yours is a fairly straightforward and usually honest style of relating that is characterized by direct expression, honesty, forthrightness and a lack of guile. Those born with the Moon in Aries tend to react quickly to circumstances, and you may speak directly from an emotional place before having stopped to really think. You may get angry easily, but will get over it quickly as well. You are likely to be most comfortable with others who let you be yourself, and recognize that there is rarely any malice or hidden agenda when you say what’s on your mind. Aries is connected with the planet Mars, the god of war. You may be at times aggressive, with a quick temper and little patience when it comes to getting what you want. Your reactions tend to be spontaneous and direct. You are likely to rely on intuitive flashes or hunches, making decisions quickly before moving on to whatever’s next. Your emotional nature may mean that you tend to jump into things, especially friendships, quite quickly. You make your decisions based on initial feeling, and once excited will happily rush in. This can lead to errors of judgment with you overstepping the mark, until you learn to balance this tendency with common sense. Try to spend a little time getting to know what others really think and feel, before you make your move. For best results, you should learn to trust your strong intuitive streak, but temper direct action with balanced consideration to help determine the correct approach. You are likely to be both noble of spirit and innately idealistic. Because of this, you will fight for ideas or people you hold dear to heart. Aries embodies the archetypal qualities of The Spiritual Warrior or The Chivalrous Knight. You may care little for money or prestige, but can be motivated to move mountains should an ideal or individual be at stake. You are likely to hold high ideals, and will believe in Truth and Justice as ultimate entities. Finding ways to channel your warrior nature into tangible outcomes should prove rewarding for you, and when you feel you are ‘fighting the good fight’ then you will feel at peace within yourself. If other factors in the chart also concur, then physical activity is likely to be most important for you, and with plenty of fuel in your tank, you will need to expend a lot of energy on a regular basis in order to feel settled and on track. At its best, Aries is a passionate and independent sign. Born with the Moon in Aries, you are likely to have an innate need to do things on your own. Your dynamism is your best asset and gives you much energy to draw upon. You will feel at your best when in charge of your own life, and in some way doing your own thing. As a natural pioneer, you can see the opportunity present in seed-potentials, and will bring much creative energy to get things off the ground. Your sense of justice and idealism means you will fight for what you feel to be fair, and in many ways your innate innocence means you can succeed through sheer courage and purity of heart. Your courage can be an inspiration to others, and you do best in life when you direct your considerable energies toward the achievement of worthwhile causes bigger than just yourself.

                                                                    JULY         2017
*****Kathy Griffin lost her CNN NY gig over her Scary Clown 45 severed head gag. Word is that Anderson Cooper wants to replace her with Andy Cohen. Last I heard, he had not talked to her directly either. Jim Carrey wonders about all that The President says and he still has his job.  He commented that he has a dream about golfing with Trump and just holding that club and then he wakes up.
*****Chance the Rapper and a few others are calling for Bill Maher to be fired after his comment about working the fields.
*****A federal court upheld a ruling that could free Brendan Dassey. The court said the investigators led the confession and Dassey’s story was involuntary. Wisconsin has 90 days to retry.
*****Better call Saul had its season finale and OMG!! If Michael McKean does not get an Emmy, the world is just wrong!!  Actually the show and the whole cast is amazing but come on!!
*****Elon Musk , David Rank and others have resigned from the Trump administration after America was taken out of the Paris climate agreement. The deal took years of negotiation and compromise and clean energy is the economics of the future. Scary Clown said that he represents Pittsburgh, not Paris and seems to see the agreement as a threat to his isolation America first ideas.  The mayor of Pittsburgh tells us, “What Trump did was not only bad for the economy but also weakened America in the world.” It will take 4 years before the U.S. can actually quit the deal. Luckily, so many companies in this country are so against Trump that we’ll probably hit our goals anyway.** The mayors of Paris and Pittsburgh have since made their own climate deal.** Others have resigned over the lack of interest the Trump administration is showing AIDS.
*****The Eagles will use Vince Gill and Glenn Frey’s son, Deacon for some NY and LA shows.
*****Word is that the American Idol reboot wanted Randy Jackson for the host gig but he turned it down.
*****Wal Mart insurer, Ohio Casualty is in a dispute against Tracy Morgan who refuses to testify. The company claims he exaggerated his injuries after being hit by the Wal Mart truck. Morgan’s camp say that the 90 million they claim to have paid him is the exaggeration.
*****Do you notice all the home security ads on the ID channel?  I guess the true crime scares you into getting more protection.
***** After many of Trump’s minions have tried to convince us that what they have done is not a travel ban, the man himself says it is. They originally claimed that this would only be for 90 days and they would have new things in place and it has been over 90 days. The President tells us that they are extreme vetting anyway so why does he want to take this to the Supreme Court?**The supreme court is letting them do it now!!** His rabid supporters  and GOP cohorts are just enablers at this point.
*****The Cosby trial ended in a mistrial. I was at the Red Cross the other day and some employees were watching a news report about the trial. The pig of a man in the group piped when they put up a shot of Cosby’s accuser. “Ooh, she is not a pretty woman. I’d have to drug MYSELF to do her,” he laughed.** Cosby is now going to do a town hall type tour.
*****Anne Rice says that she has been blocked from trump’s twitter site.
*****Trump lawyer, Jay Sekulow is so blatant about using donations from his Christian non profit to fund his personal life. Please read the article in the Guardian because the history of this is so far reaching that I can’t even go into it all here. Perhaps these givers don’t care and want to support this guy but they should know where there money is going.
*****The buzz about American crime story is starting even though it won’t be out until 2018. Next up is a look at Versace then hurricane Katrina and the Lewinsky scandal.
*****George and Amal had twins, Alex and Ella.
*****Megyn Kelly didn’t do much hard hitting on her Putin interview. She sure seems to like interviewing the hate mongers.
*****Alice Cooper is coming out with a new album.
*****Jay-Z is upset with the Prince estate.  He is quoted as saying, “This guy had ‘slave’ on his face. You think he wanted the masters with his masters?”
*****Elvis Costello is working on a Broadway musical about A Face in the crowd. Hooray! He is also heading out on tour.
*****Forbes is doing its part to expose the Trump’s. They did an in depth story about how Eric Trump’s  charity money for kids with cancer was funneled back into the business. There is now an investigation into this claim.
*****Thank you Chicago for the 10 story mural by Eduardo Kobra. The Muddy Waters mural was unveiled on June 8 at 17 N. State Street for the Chicago blues fest.  The Muddy Waters legacy gave a free concert.
*****The HBO doc,’ If you’re not in the obit, eat breakfast’ is so inspirational and adorable. Dick Van Dyke is still a sexy beast and who knew that Carl Reiner’s oldest friend is an army buddy known as the greatest harmonica player.
*****Reality Winner has been charged with leaking classified info.
*****The infrastructure plan that Trump told us was” largely complete”, isn’t done at all. He now signed a proposal that is not binding so it means nothing. WTF are they doing?
*****Days alert:  Oh, I was so hoping that they would find Tony Dimera on that Island, even though Anna carries around his ashes. It is a soap, everybody comes back. Speaking of that, Chandler Massey, who played the first ‘out’ Will Horton, is returning in September. Rory’s back!!** Where is Paul’s Mom since he is fighting for his life? ** So.. Chloe gives up the baby to Nicole and the court takes it away. Maggie is allowed to see the baby, why wouldn’t she just try to get custody of her grandson and Holly would still be in the house?? ** Thank goodness we are seeing more of Andre!
*****Chris Rock was on the cover of Rolling Stone and is on tour to make money after his divorce. He “jokes” that he had multiple affairs. Many claim that the famous affair he mentioned was with Kerry Washington.
*****The President wants to give 110 billion to Saudi Arabia for weapons.
*****Chris Wray has been nominated for FBI director.
*****Beyonce and Jay Z had twins.
*****Paul McCartney got the companion of honour in the UK.
*****Thank you CBS all access for topping off your latest ad with Matthew Gray Gubler! YES!!
*****Panama is breaking ties with Taiwan and shifting allegiance to China.
*****The director of health and human services in Michigan, Nick Lyon has been charged with involuntary manslaughter over the contaminated water.
*****Congrads to Jill Brummel and Keith and baby Wagner!
*****Check out Blood Orange for some great tunes!!
*****Woodstock has joined the National register of historic places.
*****Intel chiefs like Dan Coates refused to answer questions from their oversight committee in the probe. Rogers, Rubenstein and McCabe all seem to have trouble talking. This cover up is so much worse than Watergate. Former US director of National intelligence, James Clapper says, “Watergate pales, really, in my view, compared to what we’re confronting.”** The opening statement of James Comey was released the day before his big day. He confirms that Trump wanted him to drop the Flynn stuff and talked about the cloud of the Russian stuff. He transcribed the conversations with the President as soon as they were over.**Ya know, I was mad at Comey for the Hillary crap that he now tells us went public because he did not like the Bill Clinton and Loretta Lynch meeting. Most that have worked with him seem to call him an honorable man. I was trying to believe he would do the right thing in the Trump administration investigations. After he was fired, Trump mentioned he may have tapes and Comey had a friend release his version even though some say the leaks were first. The Trump tweet was May 12 and the first news of leaks were May 16. Now, I still try to believe that Comey is an honest man but he sometimes acts like a child (someone does something so he immediately seems to say, ok, well take that!!). But we have to notice that Scary Clown’s stories always change, Comey’s does not. As far as who called who, there must be records.**As Comey was testifying, the house repealed Dodd Frank. C’mon Press, let’s get ALL the news out there!** BTW, there are no tapes, that was just more scary clown BS.** It seems that 38% of this country is trying to run the show and those 38% don’t give a shit about the rest of us.
*****Investigators have found a direct link that puts Putin at the center of the election disruption. The plan was to help Trump and hurt Hillary. Word is that the Obama administration did not take action because they thought Putin might escalate his cyber meddling. John Kerry tried hard to get some action but the White house thought they would be accused of trying to sway things for Hillary. It’s sad but true because the Trump camp would have went nuts. The instability and doubt may have changed this country forever. It seems many do not care as long as they have their guy in power now. **Power outages in the Ukraine have also been linked to Russia. It looks like they are now gunning for us. The centralized system in the Ukraine is not as hard to set right as ours would be. Our power system is more complicated and would be harder to tamper with but also harder to straighten out. Russia appears to have an adaptable and reusable software.** Fox’s Brit Hume says that even if the Trump campaign did collude with Russia, “it’s not a crime.” They all say ‘America first’ but I am beginning to think they would all be happier in Russia.** Over 2000 pages of financial documents have been turned over to the investigation.
*****And WTF is up with John McCain? He was like a dog with a bone about bringing up the Hillary stuff again. And he does not seem to like women asking questions because he keeps interrupting. It is time to retire.** Did  you see Sen. Martin Heinrich??
*****Rep. Al Green of Texas and Brad Sherman of California are drafting articles of impeachment because Trump obstructed justice when he fired Comey. Just as this is in the works, Melania and Baron finally move into the White house.** Pence and even Trumps lawyer have hired attorneys.**After 8 years of class and pride, this country sure has taken a big step into the gutter.
*****The Generals seem to have their problems with the new President. A quote from Trump says,” The Lieutenants, the captain, their majors, the colonels- they’re professionals. They love doing it. So I authorized the generals to do the fighting.” I thought he said he knew more than them but now he gives no direction so his hands don’t get dirty. He has no strategy and there are so many vacant positions that there are not enough experts to go around. Using U.S. money to follow his family around while they make business deals instead of the government being properly staffed does not seem very safe for the rest of us.
*****Did ya’ll see those relaxed pics of Obama and Trudeau and their wine in Montreal? Wow.. It all seems so wonderfully normal.
*****Turkey has banned Wikipedia, calling it a national security threat.
*****Kevin Spacey did a great job hosting the Tony’s. His opening number included Whoopi and Stephen Colbert.  Spacey later did his Carson and said “admit it, you missed me”. I suddenly felt so sad because I realized I really do miss him. Richard Thomas and Danny Devito were both nominated for The Little Foxes but both lost to Michael Aronov. Foxes did get a win for Jane Greenwood for costume design and featured actress, Cynthia Nixon. Nixon gave a fabulous speech about the people of this nation that do not take what is happening in Washington lying down. James Earl Jones won the lifetime achievement but only got a snippet of time on air. Laurie Metcalf won for leading actress in a play for A Doll’s house part 2. Bette Midler looked great and won but would not shut up.** Best Dressed was Sarah Paulson and worst was Carolyn Murphy.
*****Patricia Krenwinkel was denied parole again.
*****Oliver Stone interviewed Putin over 20 hours in 4 visits. Putin drove him around and seemed to convince Stone that he is a pretty great guy. He seemed to take Putin’s word about meddling in the election. Some say it is a love letter to Putin and I see shades of Barbara Walters and Fidel Castro.
*****There was some voter fraud in Alton, Il. An 88 year old election judge pleaded guilty to voting for Trump for her dead husband. She claims he would have wanted her to.
*****Summer Camp 2017 in Chillicothe, Il. had some great artists this year with Claypool Lennon delirium, the Wood brothers and Gov’t. Mule. A few people were taken away after the sudden storm but other than that fun was had by all.
*****Phil Collins had to postpone a London gig after a fall.
*****Dick Gregory is out again making appearances and I wanna go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*****Theresa May misjudged her public when she called for an election in the UK. Her conservative party has lost some of its power.
*****The UK has acquired Feud: Bette and Joan to play later this year.
*****OMG: TLC SYTTD UK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*****John Oliver is being sued by a great friend of Trump’s, Robert Murray. Murray, the CEO of Murray energy warned him not to do a story on him but he did it anyway. Go John!! Look it up, it’s a story worth seeing.
*****Diedrick Bader just gets hotter
*****The Downton Abbey movie will start production in 2018!
*****An inconvenient sequel, which is out July 28, has added a bit after Trump pulled out of the Paris climate accord.
*****Ivanka is being ordered to give a deposition in a lawsuit about copying a shoe design. The Italian company that sued is Aquazzura but she claims that she had nothing to do with any of it. Her claim is that she can’t give the deposition because it would be a distraction from her WH duties. Her Fox and friends interview sound bite was :”I try to stay out of politics.”
*****Leslie Jones hosted the BET awards and earned good reviews but she later tweeted about the hotel she stayed in. She suggested that people not stay at the Ritz Carlton because, “they don’t like black people.”
*****Farm Aid is being held in Burgettstown, Pa. with Willie, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and the Avett Brothers among others.
*****Fox news will no longer use the line, “fair and balanced.”
*****Daniel Day Lewis has retired from acting.
*****Tony Bennett is given the Library of congress Gershwin prize.
*****Judd Apatow is making a doc bout Garry Shandling. Can’t wait!!
***** Sean Spicer is interviewing his own replacement including Fox news and Daily mail employees.
*****The U.S. spent 28 mil on uniforms for the Afghan military. They were not field tested and did not work out. An official wanted a specific lush forest motif while most of the landscape is desert. WTF?
*****O.J. is up for parole.
*****The secret health care bill came out and many protested at Mitch Mcconnell’s office. Police were sent in to drag them out, wheelchairs and all. It seems we have not been this divided since the civil war. What is more important than health care for all, than equality? Is a wall more important? Are tax cuts for the rich more important?  In the end, the haters always lose but not without hurting so many along the way. It always comes down to equality. It is always about some trying to keep down others and that is never right. It always has to lose in the end. ** The vote has now been delayed. **Good old Mitch who was given treatment for his polio, as a child, because of the kindness of the March of Dimes now refuses to talk to them. They disagree with the health care plan.**More health care insurance providers are bowing out of coverage. The companies blame the uncertainty of Washington. This is just another reason to blame Obama for the senate and house’s own doing. Keep things in chaos and blame the other guy while the rest of the country suffers. ** The Pres now says that the ACA should just be repealed, new plan or not.
*****It is being reported that the CIA health professionals did not just torture detainees during the Bush administration, they performed experiments.. This is like right out of the Nazi playbook.

*****Wow!! The NY senate after a decade, still did not vote on the child victims act. The Catholic Church and the Boy scouts lobby so hard because they think it will bankrupt them. The bill would let survivors bring civil cases until they are 50 years old, felonies until 28, and give a 1 year window for both public and private institutions instead of 90 days. Republican majority leader John Flanagan will not even put it up for a vote.
*****Illinois has its fair share of problems right now with the budget crisis, Chicago and Peoria shootings and the Belleville shooter, James T. Hodgkinson.
*****Why do the View and the Tonight show play all these stupid games with their guests? Does the audience enjoy this? It is often so awkward.
*****Jess Session says that Trump has not been in a single briefing about North Korea. I am sure the new South Korean president is reassured by that as he came for a visit. The shuffling of reporters and questions about the idiot in chiefs twitter made him feel welcome too.
*****And now the airwaves explode with the latest scary clown 45 twitter directed at the Morning Joe team. Why do we have to talk endlessly about this crap every time the baby has a tantrum? Unless we find some real evidence or this impeachment march does some real good, we better get used to the fact that our President has no fucking class!
*****Neil Young is reminding us to stand up for what we believe and resist this 4th with a new video.

Then there’s the film...
Oliver Stone’s JFK is one of my favorite films. Period. Each time I watch it — and I’ve done so on countless occasions since its 1991 release — it not only “holds up,” it improves with age. Repeated viewings never fail to deliver fresh insights and new emotional jolts.
Indeed, I place it in a pantheon with The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, with the best of Orson Welles, Stanley Kubrick, Howard Hawks and John Ford. It’s a truly great American movie. And when I chatted with Stone about it recently, he betrayed no false modesty on the subject. “JFK was staggeringly complex and beautiful,” he said. “It was perhaps my greatest film in terms of ambition and everything coming together at one time. But it was so drenched in controversy there was no way we could come out in the end as the Best Picture.”
Nonetheless, it did receive eight Oscar nominations (including Best Picture) and won the trophy for Best Cinematography and Best Editing. To be sure, the cutting, by Joe Hutshing, Pietro Scalia and their associates, Hank Corwin and Julie Munro, is awe-inspiring. They mix black and white and color film, shot in 8mm., 16mm. and 35mm. formats, in ways that are both meaningful and visually arresting; they blend documentary, re-enacted and original dramatic footage seamlessly; and they tell the complex story of Oswald, of the labyrinthine plot to kill Kennedy, of the assassination itself and of New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison’s “hero’s journey” — all in a 200 minute rollercoaster ride that never stalls or lags. [...] And one of the most remarkable things about JFK – a movie with many remarkable aspects – is its stellar cast: Costner, Donald Sutherland, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Bacon, Joe Pesci, John Candy, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Ed Asner, Cissy Spacek, and Gary Oldman, along with an elite group of character actors, including Laurie Metcalf, Brian Doyle-Murray, Wayne Knight, Michael Rooker, Jay O. Sanders, Bob Gunton, John Laroquette, Vincent D’Onofrio, Sally Kirkland, J.J. Johnston, Ron Rifkin, Lolita Dovidavitch, Tony Plana and Frank Whaley.
If you hired any three of these giants, you’d have a solid ensemble. But Oliver Stone felt he needed more than that. “I wanted big stars,” he said, “because there was a lot of stuff in the script that was necessary but dull and dry. I remember thinking at the time that I needed “road maps.” When you go through all the literature on the assassination, which I did with Jane Rusconi – we did a lot of research – it can be very arid: Who’s who, who’s a doctor and who was in this apartment, when did that happen…So I wanted some road maps. I thought you needed a Jack Martin who would stand out. You needed a David Ferrie, a Fletcher Prouty, a Lee Oswald, certainly…But they also had to be believable and memorable faces. So I went to actors like Jack Lemmon (who played Martin) and Ed Asner (who played Guy Bannister). What a great combo! They fit together perfectly.
“I went to Brando for Sutherland’s role – the Fletcher Prouty character – but I think that was a mistake because he would have made that dialogue fifteen times longer. The reason, again, was financing. Glen Ford also turned me down for that role. But I was lucky to get Sutherland because he’s a fast actor. And he was great.
“Everyone else was a first choice, pretty much. Kevin Bacon… I knew Perry Russo, the male prostitute he plays, and guys like him, and Kevin just felt to me like a New Orleans street hustler. Joe Pesci… I loved him in Raging Bull, and he was great as David Ferrie. Funny, too!
“I also wanted Sissy Spacek very much. Liz Garrison was the mother of six children and was raised in the Southern tradition. So you don’t cast some urbane Hollywood-type who’s going to give backtalk to Jim. Sissy brought something perfectly Southern and old fashioned to the part.
“And getting Tommy Lee Jones as Clay Shaw was a great coup. He strikes you as a strong macho guy. But he played Shaw, who was part of an early sixties gay New Orleans underground, as elegant and effete. Tommy was pitch perfect, and he got an Academy Award nomination.” [...]
The judge rolls his eyes. Liz frets. “It was a public execution,” Garrison concludes. “And it was covered up by like like-minded individuals in the Dallas Police Department, the Secret Service, the FBI and the White House, all the way up to and including J. Edgar Hoover and Lyndon Johnson, who I consider accomplices after the fact.” Onlookers are incredulous. Slowly, smugly, Shaw smiles. He knows that Garrison’s gone too far and that he’s off the hook. The jury delivers its verdict: not guilty.
Outside the courtroom a juror speaks to the press. “We believe there was a conspiracy,” he says, “but whether Clay Shaw was a part of it is another kettle of fish.” Asked if the not-guilty verdict vindicates the Warren Commission Report, Garrison responds, “All I think it proves is that you cannot run an investigation in the light of day even questioning the intelligence operations of the United States government.”
As whistleblowers remain under attack, with Chelsea Manning behind bars and Edward Snowden in exile, Garrison’s comment continues to resonate. At the outset of my interview with Oliver Stone, I asked why his film, JFK, retains a powerful immediacy 22 years after its release. He said, “Well, there’s John Kennedy himself, and his reputation. And there’s the film.” Yes. There’s the film. The prescient, poetic, profound and deeply moving film.

I was struck in seeing “The Great Society,” which depicts President Lyndon Johnson’s turbulent full term in office, how Robert Shenkkan’s play represents political theater in more ways than one.
Now, search the news these days for the phrase “political theater” and it is used as an accusation by people on the political right: The young people demonstrating to demand something be done for climate change, the antagonists say, are “props in political theater.” Above all, they label the impeachment inquiry of President Trump as “political theater”
We live in such a polarized time in our history that we can’t even agree on the meaning of words – as the theater artist known as Dyalekt pointed out in his (political) show, which I saw last week, The Museum of Dead Words. But I suppose political theater has long meant different things to different people. Political theater on stage is as old as theater. The Ancient Greek satires are said to have influenced public opinion, and Shakespeare is full of the politics of his day. The British critic Michael Billington recently named the Bard’s “Coriolanus” as  number one on his list of favorite political theater of all time (or, since he’s British, his favourite political theatre.)
Political theater is currently happening on and off the stage in New York – and throughout the world. London, for example, is reportedly full of new political plays: In  “Hansard” by Simon Woods, a couple during the Thatcher era bicker over politics in a way that critics see as commenting on the current Brexit polarization; “A Very Expensive Poison” a chlling satire by Lucy Prebble, features an actor portraying Russian Vladimir Putin and riffs on the 2006 murder in the UK by radioactive poison of the onetime Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko; “Faith Hope and Charity” by Alexander  show the people desperate for a meal who gather at a community center that may soon be shut down.
New York has always been a center of political theater – both on stage, and off stage, and a hybrid of the two. Both Arian Moayed and Robert Schenkkan have dramatized politicized issues  using verbatim transcripts  — in, respectively, “The Courtroom,” about a deportation case, and “The Investigation,” about the Mueller Report.
That’s why I Tweeted this a week ago
The non-verbatim transcript of call between Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky, in which Trump urges him to investigate Biden.
How long will it take before a theater artist — @ROBERTSCHENKKAN? @ArianMoayed? — produces a staged reading of it?https://t.co/gVxdPlzuvz pic.twitter.com/1ywBOjl7d1

“The Great Society” both embodies and depicts political theater.
There is the speech that Brian Cox as LBJ gives near the end of the play, which is verbatim announce that Johnson delivered in 1968:
“I feel strongly that I should not permit the Presidency to become involved in the partisan divisions that are developing in this political year. Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President.”
Since the play opened on Broadway exactly a week after the launch of the impeachment inquiry against the 45th president, it’s hard to avoid wondering whether The Great Society is intentionally designed to offer a contrast between the two men. After all, it’s impossible to imagine Trump voluntarily saying a single word from that announcement.
But the play also includes something of a subplot in the ways that Martin Luther King Jr. (portrayed by Grantham Coleman, pictured above in a clash in Chicago) pushed for civil rights, and especially for voting rights. He did so by….political theater: “We have to up the stakes. We’ve got to make people aware.” Political theater makes people aware. Even LBJ saw that (at least in the play): “We don’t disagree on tactics, Dr. King, just on timing.”
There are other plays about politics, and politicians coming up this month, such as Bella Bella, Harvey Fierstein’s solo show about Rep. Bella Abzug

The Week in New York Theater Reviews
The Great Society
The Great Society…is a sequel to All The Way, the Tony-winning play that was on Broadway five years ago (and is currently being shown on Netflix.) It starred Brian Cranston and chronicled the first year of LBJ’s presidency, starting in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of John F. Kennedy and ending with LBJ’s election. The new play offers some of the same pleasures. It too employs a big cast — 19 actors portraying some 50 characters — for a sweeping lesson in history and politics. It is smoothly directed, competently acted, and often fascinating, But it is ultimately less satisfying than All The Way.
Why?
Those for whom theater is their religion are more likely to appreciate “Why?,” a 70-minute theater piece about theater that, aptly, begins with a whimsically modified Biblical tale: God proclaims “There shall be theater” on the seventh day, because the humans had gotten bored on the day of rest….Written and directed by Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne, “Why?” is less a play than a kind of elliptical lecture-demonstration of, and paean to, the beauty and danger of the theatrical arts…more
The Height of the Storm
The same playwright who gave us “The Father” with a demented Frank Langella and “The Mother” with a depressed and possibly deranged Isabelle Huppert now offers us…dead Jonathan Pryce and Eileen Atkins?  Or maybe just one of them is dead? Or maybe neither?… Maybe we’re the ones who are dead – or wish we were by the end of “The Height of The Storm.”….
Both British actors of great renown… offer memorable moments of emotional power and clarity…But their performances were not enough compensation for sitting through Zeller’s trickster writing, which feels progressively less like a sensibility and more like a shtick.
Antigone
Ethereal, stylized and visually stunning, Japanese director Satoshi Miyagi’s production of “Antigone,” at the Park Avenue Armory through October 6, fuses several theatrical traditions, some of them thousands of years old, some newly created. Twenty-nine performers, ghostly in flowing white kimonos, glide slowly and gracefully through the ankle-deep water that covers the stage of the Armory’s massive Drill Hall. Placed around them in this pool of shimmering water (made with 18,000 gallons of water) are boulders, meant to resemble a Buddhist stone garden. This is the setting in which Sophocles’ 2,500-year-old play unfolds….more
  The Museum of Dead Words
The artist known as Dyalekt (pronounced dialect) greets us looking like a young Allen Ginsberg in his Yippie Uncle Sam phase, holding up a bucket labeled “dead words,” asking us for words that we don’t think work anymore. He will be our rapping guide to The Museum of Dead Words, which is not really a museum and not really about dead words. It is a show about 11 red-hot words that are used in combat rather than conversation….more
Work in Progress: A Hill on Which to Drown
Three generations of black, queer theater artists – actor André De Shields, 73; playwright Kevin R. Free, who is 50;  and director Zhailon Levingston, 25 —  are collaborating on a play about a black, queer character inspired by August Wilson’s Century Cycle. From the very first Wilson play he ever saw, a community theater production of “Fences” in the early 1990s, Free has had the same two reactions to  Wilson’s epic 10-play cycle, each play taking place in a different decade in Pittsburgh’s Hill District.
“I love the productions I’ve seen, but have never really felt a part of the world,” Free says. “The Cycle is genius, beautiful and resonant, but it features no fictional LGBTQIA* characters.”
So Free set out to create one.

A look at Patreon and its founder musician/techie Jack Conte
Here’s how Patreon works: You, a creator in search of funds, keep producing and distributing things wherever you usually do—Medium, SoundCloud, YouTube, whatever. But you also set up a Patreon page and direct your fans there in the hope that they will become your “patrons,” committing themselves to recurring monthly payments. (Unlike on Kickstarter, where supporters pitch in toward the completion of an individual project, on Patreon the money goes toward a creator’s ongoing output and livelihood generally.) In turn, Patreon encourages creators to treat these patrons less like charitable benefactors and more like members who have purchased admission to a club—entitling them to exclusive perks, whether it’s gated chat sessions, bonus content, or early peeks at a work in progress.
The 17th annual Broadway Stands Up For Freedom, benefit concert for ACLU/NYCLU, on Monday October 28 at The Town Hall,  will have the theme “My Body, My Business” and feature performances by Kelli O’Hara, Phillipa Soo, Montego Glover,  Eva Noblezada among others.  The concert is directed by Tony-winning director Rachel Chavkin (Hadestown).

**I was born in 1990 and became a wrestling fan in 1996. Shawn Michaels was my first favorite wrestler, and I watched every minute of the Attitude Era religiously. Needless to say, 90s WWF is my wrestling foundation. I have heard about the mythic era of the NWA and the territories, (and of course I’ve seen bits and pieces) but never truly steeped myself in all its glory. Follow my fresh/ignorant breakdown of classic wrestling!**
Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling—October 17, 1981
Bob and Davy preview the show, which features the usual cast of characters, aside from one new face–Jimmy Valiant. According to Davy’s wonderfully Southern phrasing, Mid-Atlantic just “keeps getting on better and better!” The WWE Network has a gap in episodes, so we have skipped a few weeks ahead.
Jake Roberts, who seems to switch partners weekly, is now chasing the tag titles with Jay Youngblood. Jake calls out Ole over the fact that the NWA Tag Team Championship has not been defended in 60 days, (30 days overdue) so he will either have to get Gene out of retirement or find a new partner to give them a fair shot.
He throws it to Youngblood, who gives a complete mess of a promo. His bloodshot eyes suggest he may have just smoked a joint. He stumbles on his words, and at one point, completely turns his back to the camera. Jake even seems to be snickering at him in the background. (Maybe Jake just likes to pick partners that humor him.) They just send guys out there and let them do what they do on the mic, for better or for worse. I can respect that.
Piper walks up to Youngblood and just tears into him, going on a breathless tirade about how he will fight Youngblood and his entire “squaw” family. He says they could fight have a deathmatch, until each literally cannot fight any longer and looks as if he might spontaneously combust at any second. In an unexpected turn, David steps in to tell Piper that the stipulation has already been made for this match, and his partner, Abdullah the Butcher, has been suspended, so he better just accept it. As David explains, it’s just a “regular match.” Youngblood comes back to fire back at Piper with the line, “you better not mess with any Indians…or any of these fans.” Yeah I’m pretty sure he’s stoned.
Youngblood cannot even come close to matching Piper’s intensity and really looks weak here. He has to have, of all people, David squeak something out to defend him against Piper’s ranting. Still, you get a face and heel confrontation to set up a good match later in the program, and Piper raving like a lunatic about deathmatches is fantastic.
Before we get to any matches, David and Bob are excited to show us some footage of Jimmy Valiant, and it might be the greatest montage ever spliced together at a TV studio in North Carolina.
Here are the highlights:
a.) The same clip of Handsome Jimmy strutting around ringside in a glittery hat with a cigar in his mouth. This clip appears about three times total from what I counted.
b.) Some short clips of him in ring punching people in a tiny tv studio illuminated with various colors of the rainbow. Also, the ring doesn’t even have a damn apron and looks to be on the verge on imploding with every step the wrestlers take. Really, I have seen better rings in backyard wrestling.
c.) Jimmy rocking out, though not necessarily singing, with his band in a foggy haze.
d.) Jimmy emerges from a limousine wearing a blazer with no shirt at what appears to be a smoky jazz bar.
e.) Jimmy beats up a man dressed in blue tights and diaper.
As Bob tells us, we now know “a few of the things Jimmy Valiant can do.”
Jimmy Valiant vs Jim Nelson The match consists mainly of Valiant bopping around the ring and landing the occasional strike or toss on Nelson. There really isn’t much else to add.
Match Notes The match basically served as an introduction to the entertaining Valiant and his mannerisms, including the way he constantly bounces from side to side. He’s a pretty cool character. If Santa Claus joined the Doobie Brothers, he would look like Jimmy Valiant. I’m looking forward to some Handsome Jimmy promos.
Winner: Jimmy Valiant via pin Rating:  ½*
Roddy Piper vs Jay Youngblood The match broke down into three distinct segments that all made sense. In the early going, the two tie up, and Youngblood wins nearly every exchange, managing to toss Piper out or work him into a hold. Piper heads outside after each of these exchanges to regroup and do some quality pissing and moaning. Eventually, Piper takes control, works the back, and gets the sleeper locked in, only for Youngblood to get the ropes. Piper continues to work Jay over, but makes a crucial mistake of hitting his own head on a vertical suplex. When the two regain their strength, they trade big strikes back and forth until time expires. The pace ebbed and flowed nicely, and the narrative was rock solid.
Match Notes There were so many great little elements that made this awesome. I loved how they used Piper’s earlier comments about wanting a deathmatch to build heat on him. He wanted this brutal deathmatch, yet complains every that Youngblood’s every move is cheating. By turning into a normal match, it allowed the two to build to a time limit draw through an awesome last sequence where both guys were groggy and just nailing each other until time expired. Youngblood’s chops (one in the early going especially) were just lethal. The pace was super quick early, but slowed as both guys wore down, building to the dramatic punchdrunk finish.
I love the use of the “critical mistake” as a storytelling device in many of these matches, and the guys really do a great job of executing it. When Piper hits his head on the suplex, it completely changes the momentum of the match and allows Youngblood to get back in it. It helps to transition between different sections of the match.
Finally, it was a little uncomfortable to hear Bob call Youngblood “this Indian” so many times. “This Indian can really fight, David!” Piper proceeds to beat Youngblood down after the match until officials pull him off. Amazing that as legendary as Piper would become, some lucky folks in the Carolinas got to see him work great matches like this in a tiny venue for 80 people.
Winner: Draw via Time Limit (10 minute) Rating: ***½
After the break, we cut to  a completely different studio for a promo from Blackjack Mulligan Jr. (a super young Barry Windham), Johnny Weaver, and Paul Jones. Junior has an issue with Kevin Sullivan, while Jones and Weaver will face the Russians (along with their manager Lord Alfred!) and it might end up in the parking lot. This promo came out of nowhere, but regardless, you can check out all the action at the National Guard Armory in Ronceverte, WV. All I could focus on was Weaver’s gaping mouth through the entire promo.
The Great Kubuki vs Charlie Fulton After some lengthy histrionics and unmasking, Kubuki nails Fulton with a stiff chop, a kick, another chop, and then pins him. That’s it.
Match Notes Illustrated that by their fears that he may use a samurai sword in the match, Bob and David are completely befuddled by Kubuki.
(Kabuki unmasks)David: OH GAA
Bob: (Deadpan) Heck, I still don’t know who he is.
Even though there wasn’t much to the actual match, I can’t completely thrash it because Kabuki did grab my attention and his theatrics at the start built some suspense around what he would actually do. He’s fully into the character, so I can appreciate that. Also, that first chop was vicious. Lots of quality chops on this show. Between Kubuki and Handsome Jimmy, more and more colorful characters are being introduced that I would have expected.
Winner: Great Kubuki via pin Rating: *
Next up, the promo carousel! Wahoo Mcdaniel is up first to run down Piper. In a nice touch, Wahoo’s forehead still looks purple from the slaughter by Abdullah a month ago. Jake steps up next to once again call out Ole for not defending the tag straps. Both of these guys have a more reserved promo styles that really draws you in.
Bad Bad Leroy Brown and Jake Roberts vs Rick Harris and Ali Bey   Despite his power, Leroy finds himself in his opponents’ corner until he manages to escape and tag Jake. Jake starts fast and furious, but eventually finds himself in peril. He finds a way to sneak to his corner to tag Leroy, who then rams Harris into his stomach a few times, then hits the big splash for the win. Solid, logical, and nothing spectacular.
Match Notes On the surface it seems like an odd pairing, but Jake and Leroy make a pretty cohesive team. Jake can use his quick fiery offense and be face in peril, then Leroy can clean up with his big power moves.
Winner: Leroy Brown and Jake Roberts via pin Rating: *1/2
Announcer Aside This might be the first time on these shows that the announcers all but ignore the action in the ring to discuss other wrestlers and angles. They still can’t get over Kubuki’s alleged purple tongue or the dastardly actions of Roddy Piper.
I’m starting to see that the focus remains on the in ring competition, but they still like to bring in wild characters and personalities. Still, even the odd characters are presented in a fairly serious way.
We get some more promos for the Armory show. Young Kevin Sullivan looks like a total stud (or a jacked up Owen Wilson) and will take on Blackjack Mulligan Jr.  Also, cool moment as we get to see a glimpse of Lord Al playing a smug British heel managing the Russians. A great one too, turning his nose to the cretins of Roncerverte who “quaff beer.” He is an entirely different character, far from yucking it up on TNT, and I can only hope for more Evil Al. Many of the older guys from the territory days can just transition seamlessly from face to heel.
US Heavyweight Champion Sgt. Slaughter vs Frank Monte Monte tries to stave off Slaughter with some desperation blows. However, that does absolutely nothing, and Sarge beats on his midsection and lower back relentlessly, then locks in the cobra clutch for the win.
Match Notes Slaughter deserves this championship because he has been nothing short of great on these shows. Like Piper, he fills the gaps with so many great heel moves, like screaming the Marines’ Hymn while Monte loses consciousness. He also delivers the third brutal chop of the show.
Winner: Sgt. Slaughter via submission Rating: *
We close with more interviews. Slaughter goes on a wild tirade about how he is best, and in the process, calls out Leroy Brown, Jim Crockett, the cameraman, the tape, and, of course, that blonde haired maggot whose the World Champion. Slaughter kills it here as always and has even more gusto after winning the US title.
Ivan Koloff shows up for the first time in a while, and Bob looks sincerely afraid that Koloff might bite him. He calls out Steamboat and then does some other general growling.
Finally, Ole  vehemently denies making excuses and says he will defend the title when he gets a partner. Ole always does a good job of showing that he really does see himself as a reasonable, respectable guy, when we all know he’s nothing of the sort.
The credits roll over a shot of Slaughter murdering Frank Monte.
End of Show Notes
MVP: Roddy Piper Piper always brings the goods with his promos, but on this show he brought it in the ring as well, in the best match on these Mid-Atlantic shows so far. Go out of your way to watch this match.
If You Only Watch One Match: Roddy Piper vs Jay Youngblood
Best Nonwrestling Segment: “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant montage
Overall Impression: This was a strong show down in the Carolinas. You have the excellent Piper/Youngblood match, the fun Jimmy Valiant montage, and solid performances from Jake and Slaughter. Anytime you get a match between two featured guys, you savor it. And least we forget about the mysterious Great Kubuki. I’d call this the best so far.
Rating: 8/10
So long for now!

Casting is announced today for the World Premiere of new comedy drama The Retreat, the first play by BAFTA award-winning writer Sam Bain, directed by Kathy Burke, which will play at Park Theatre from Thursday 2nd November to Saturday 2nd December 2017.
Adam Deacon will play Tony, Samuel Anderson will play Luke and Yasmine Akram will play Tara.
Adam Deacon (Tony) is best known for playing the lead role of Jay in films Kidulthood and Adulthood, and for his directorial debut Anuvahood, in which he also starred, for which he won the BAFTA Rising Star Award. Adam has since appeared in feature films including Bonded by Blood, Jack Falls, Shank, Everywhere and Nowhere and Payback Season, with television work including Babylon (Channel 4), Inside No. 9 (BBC Two) and Being Human (BBC Three). Adam has also worked with mental health charity MIND and recently filmed a documentary with Stephen Fry for the BBC.
Samuel Anderson (Luke) is perhaps best known for playing Danny Pink in the eighth series of BBC’s Doctor Who, and Daniel in the Sky1 sitcom Trollied. Other television work includes Ross Kirk in Emmerdale (ITV), Totally Frank (Channel 4), Moving On (BBC One) and Loaded (Channel 4). On stage, Samuel originated the role of Crowther in the National Theatre production of The History Boys, subsequently playing the role on Broadway and all over the world.
Yasmine Akram (Tara) has starred as Janine in the hit BBC show Sherlock, Jonesy in Netflix’s Lovesick, and has been a series regular in shows including Stella (Sky1), Undercover (Dave), Asylum (BBC) and Unforgotten (ITV). As a writer, Yasmine co-wrote and starred in two series of Irish Micks and Legends for BBC Radio 4, her film A Date for Mad Mary won the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Film in 2017, and she recently completed filming her first short film War Paint, funded by Creative England, in which she also stars.
The Retreat follows Luke, a former high-flyer from the City, as he sits in a remote stone hut halfway up a mountain in the Scottish Highlands. He is on a meditation retreat, searching for the inner peace that so far has eluded him. The trouble is, not only will his mind not settle, but an uninvited guest arrives – his obnoxious older brother Tony. Is Tony everything that’s wrong with Luke’s old life, or is he the only one who can really see into his soul? And is Luke’s quest for spirituality a way of transforming himself, or is it just another form of addiction? april 2017
This is the first April in five years that I have not been studying for final exams and feverishly reading the textbooks I neglected during the semester. Instead, I’ve been spending my days at work, commuting three hours to/from work, and watching Mad Man with my parents. It’s a wild life, y’all.
- the television -
Speaking of Mad Men, my parents and I wrapped up the series this month with seasons five, six and seven. It’s clearly very well made, and the acting is impressive, but I’m not sure I liked it? My only real opinions about the show are a) Jon Hamm is a fox, and b) Peggy Olson is the best.
In April, I also continued my re-watch of Grey’s Anatomy with seasons three, four, five and six. Predictably, I got sucked back into the Grey’s universe and fell behind on nearly all currently airing shows in favour of binging it. I’ve watched the first five seasons of this show so many times since I first started watching in middle school, and every time I do, I find more and more plots that irritate me. George and Izzie getting together is even worse than I remembered. Izzie having sex with Denny’s ghost? Erica Hahn’s entire presence? Boo, BOOOOOO. In season five, two new characters are introduced - Owen Hunt and Arizona Robbins. Both are characters that I loved (at first) and then grew to absolutely despise in later seasons. (I loved Hunt so much when he was just a great doctor and sweet guy struggling with PTSD, but now I could write an entire dissertation on why he is garbage). But the character development of Meredith Grey and Alex Karev through these first six seasons is so well done and incredibly important to me, and they are the only reason that I am still watching this show thirteen seasons later.
I also spent an intense weekend binge watching 13 Reasons Why this month. The novel, by Jay Asher, was really important to me in high school - I read it a dozen times and did my entire grade 9 English final project on it. I do feel that the adaptation elevated the material, but there were changes made that felt unnecessary and gratuitous and as an adult, I am more aware of how the entire story could be harmful to those struggling with suicide ideation. This piece, by Ijeoma Oluo, does a great job of exploring this.
- the books -
I fell into a bit of a reading slump this month. I’m still eight books ahead of schedule on my reading challenge (TAKE THAT, GOODREADS) but I only finished three in April. The first was Marlena by Julie Buntin. I preordered this novel back in 2016 and had been anticipating its release for months, so I was extremely excited to dive in. It did not disappoint! But, after I was done, I had trouble sinking into another novel. I started and promptly gave up on four different books before finally settling on Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Reid’s novels are all contemporary romances, and nice, easy reads that you can mainline in an afternoon. I appreciate the existence of these kinds of novels but I have come to the conclusion that I do not like her writing, and this one was particularly bad. Her dialogue is unrealistic and her characters are not at all well-rounded. The main character, Hannah Martin, is obsessed with cinnamon buns and wearing her hair in a high bun, and Reid apparently thought these facts were enough to form a personality because she mentioned them approximately 347 times throughout the book. 0/10 do not recommend.

The last book I read this month was Everything You Want Me to Be by Mindy Mejia. This novel is a murder mystery, told from three perspectives in two timelines - one, before the murder and one after. It started out fairly strong, but I lost interest about halfway through and found myself skim reading the last 100 pages because, while I didn’t care about any of the characters, I wanted to know who the murderer was. It wasn’t a great conclusion - there were three different “twists” in the wrap-up and final one was just a little tooooo convenient.
- the podcasts -
Podcasts, podcasts, podcasts!
My job is extremely dull, so I’ve been keeping myself entertained for eight hours a day with a ton of podcasts. This month, I got into The Hilarious World of Depression, Heavyweight, Someone Knows Something, Nancy and 2 Dope Queens. If you’re looking for true crime, try Someone Knows Something. If you like frank, compassionate conversations about mental health, listen to The Hilarious World of Depression. If you like This American Life-esque human stories, Heavyweight is for you. If you’re looking for a podcast about the LGBTQ+ experience from two queer, people of colour, try Nancy. (Actually, you know what, literally everyone should listen to Nancy - it’s wonderful). If you like to laugh, listen to 2 Dope Queens. (I’ve been muffling laughter at my desk every day listening to Phoebe Robinson, Jessica Williams and their stand-up comic guests. Start with ‘#25 A Jon Hamm Sandwich’, it made me cry-laugh).
If you have any recommendations for me, hit me up here or on Twitter! I’m always looking for new podcasts!
- miscellaneous -
In April, I saw City & Colour live in concert for the fourth time. The shows are always amazing, but this one was truly special - two hours of just Dallas Green with a guitar surrounded by twinkly lights (aka. what I imagine heaven to be).
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra launched a Harry Potter Film Concert series July 2016 with the Philosopher’s Stone, and this month, they returned with Chamber of Secrets. In this series, the orchestra performs the soundtrack (composed by John Williams) while the film plays on a large screen above the stage. It was an incredibly cool experience. My friend and I went dressed in our house colours (Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, respectively) and the audience was filled with cosplayers and people decked head-to-toe in Hogwarts merch. At the start of the show, the conductor encouraged us to clap and cheer for our favourite moments and characters, to laugh and boo and interact with the material. I’ve already bought tickets for Prisoner of Azkaban, which will run this July.
My parents hold season tickets at a local theatre, so every month they see a different play from the season roster. This month, my dad had a conflict, so I went with my mom to see The Out Vigil, a play written by Julie McIsaac and set in present-day Newfoundland. The cast is made up of only five people - three actors and two musicians - but they have an enormous presence. Act One is rather slow, but Act Two is incredibly compelling and the play features such rich relationships and an interesting magical realism element. Support local theatre!
This month, I also went to see Beauty & the Beast. It is my favourite Disney movie off all time, but the live action version lacked so much of the charm of the animated film.
I haven’t been listening to much music lately. Music gives my brain too much time to wander, so I’ve been distracting it with podcasts and audiobooks. But, two songs did get stuck in my head this month. Harry Styles’ first solo single, ‘Sign of the Times’, was released on April 7th. It’s all glam rock and falsetto and drama. It’s long, running nearly six minutes, and slow, but I love it because I love him and I cannot wait until his full album is released (May 12th! Pre-order it!). Lorde’s new single ‘Green Light’ is the other song that has been playing in my head on a loop. It is an extremely good song to listen to while stuck in traffic on a sunny day with your windows and sunroof open.
